I found Dr. Gross on Yelp and decided to reluctantly book an apt after having eye strain/headaches at work. They were able to get me in on a Saturday in the AM. This was great timing because during the week he was booked out a couple of weeks (this is a great sign to me). Additionally, they have amazing technology here. Chelsea Vision Associates is the Best eye care specialist team in NYC! I was fortunate to have an updated eye glass and contact exam with the Chelsea team prior to quarantine. I found them by googling, and it worked out well because not only were they in my network, but they were in walking distance from me. However, I was still deciding on new contacts and new glasses when the quarantine began. Thankfully, they were still reachable and operating remotely on a limited basis. I was able to coordinate my one year supply of contacts with my rebate, and it was mailed to me out of state where I was quarantining with family. When they were back in office, they helped me coordinate my new glasses and also had them shipped to me out of state. I'm beyond satisfied with their professionalism and empathy! I made an appointment with Dr. Gross through ZocDoc and it was quick and easy. When I got to the reception it was pretty simple I filed out my new patient form and had to hand my medical insurance card (this is not the same as your eye insurance which I was pretty rudely told when I asked for a clarification). I ended up seeing Dr. Han who was great, just not who I expected to see given all my appointment and the front desk said I'd see Dr. Gross. Regardless, I didn't think too much of it since the doc was so nice and used relevant examples to explain. One star off for the assistant staff. One literally was texting while I was in the room with the doctor and they had to say her name and pat her to get her attention. I have literally never seen that in my life and makes me think there's some weird power dynamic or culture issues going on in the office. In the initial check up room too, there were different drinks from fast food shops and coke cans just on equipment and desks that I found a little unsettling at the doctor's office. Otherwise though, I do think it is a clean place. The other star off is just for something that really irks me with healthcare. I was told by the doctor a bunch of great recommendations and that person in the room with me would explain how to use a bunch of products and walk me through the prices up front. She never showed, and yes this is the same lady who was on her phone. So I had to ask for the products up front and that was fine. Lid scrubbers and eye drops came out to be $54.. ok kinda expensive but I had literally no benchmark and I'm at a healthcare professionals office so I just jumped in and purchased only to find out that lid scrubbers are $10 and the same drops are $24 online. I understand it's NYC and taxes and everything is expensive but this really broke my trust too that they would overcharge by approx $20 for their products. Anywho... Their staff is hit or miss but mostly okay I suppose. The doctor was great but I'm not sure if I'll go back given the really crazy red flags.. I'd honestly suggest that they make a few changes to the culture of the office because I think it's ridiculous that the staff that are supposed to help doctors are leaving their drinks all over the place and on their phone in the patient examination room read more

I have had the best eye experience with Chelsea Vision Associates! I wanted to have LASIK done on both eyes and my insurance sent me to Dr. Gross for pre-LASIK evaluation. His office staff is so nice and welcoming, they walked me through the entire appointment ahead of time so I knew what to expect before we even started. Dr. Gross was amazing. We did my exam and then he jumped straight into LASIK info. He covered all of the major concerns, things that worry most people and made sure I had all of the information, so I could make an informed choice about whether or not to move forward. I decided to go ahead with it, as he addressed all of my questions/concerns. He recommended TLC Laser Eye Centers (who were also incredible, but another review), sent me out with information on the surgeon, how to contact them, and what the next steps would be. My pre- and post-op care is co-managed by TLC and Dr. Gross. It's awesome because they have a rigorous follow up schedule post-surgery, to make sure everything is healing properly. Dr. Gross gave me the low down on how manage my eye irritation, how to clean the build up from the eye drops off of my lashes, let me know when to return to work...he even gave me alcohol swabs because I was complaining about how sticky the surgical tape residue is (you need it for holding the overnight eye shields in place). It was a wonderful LASIK journey and even after LASIK, CVA and Dr. Gross will be my preferred eye center in the city. Couldn't recommend it more! read more

Now this is customer service! I am new to the city and I was having trouble with what I perceived to be an increase of floaters in my eyes. So, I called them up and they were able to book me the same day. When I got to the office, the staff were very attentive and professional. They directed me about what to do next and what to expect. At the same time, they were down-to-earth and friendly. The paperwork to fill out was minimal! I found the doctor to be good humored and patient with me as I asked questions. He alleviated my concerns and explained things to me in a very simple but not condensing manner. He even contacted a retina specialist about a concern he found but turned out to be harmless. The equipment they use seem to be very modern. No more puff tests! And the retinal camera was state of the art. The only downside I see is the waiting area is a bit cramped and I was a bit confused when I entered the office and was starting to check in with the dental office. Small stuff, though. Overall, I highly recommend this optometric. The doctor is very knowledgeable and the staff are easy to work with. read more

I made a same-day appointment for the first time and it went great!! Dr. David Gross is a very nice person who explains everything in detail and makes you feel comfortable. For me, it has been very hard to find contact lenses that don't bother me and in my first appointment Dr. David found the perfect ones for my eyes, they are so comfortable, I never experienced this before. Wow. Great customer service and so much more than I expected from just a routine eye visit. Great central location, stylist frames, and an extremely helpful staff. The great customer service started well before I even set foot in the actual establishment. The young lady I spoke with over the phone looked up both my vision plans to see what and how much was covered. She was patient and professional and even got me in within a week of making my appointment. My appointment started on time and the Doctor Gross was personable and provided me with additional information during my visit I would normally not have received. And trust me I know I have been getting my eyes checked for years. One thing that completely blew my mind was after my contact examination in which I tried a different type of contacts for my Astigmatism the Doctor then checked to make sure my contacts properly fit on my eyes. Normally after giving you your trial pair they just ask you how you feel and you are on your merry way.But this doctor actually to the time to examine them up close. After my eye exam I got to pick out some frames. The employee Peter was so helpful. I promise he has to be the most patient and helpful I encountered. And he knows his stuff ! I happen to have dual vision insurance and gave me different options in terms of which insurance I should use to cover what. What a great staff! As a new patient I was happy to have a first great visit. Everyone at the front desk was so friendly and helpful and the doctor was easy to talk to and gave some good recommendations. The office is clean and they offer a nice selection of designer frames. The only thing that I didn't care for was the riff-raff from the non-patients coming in off the street either needing to use the bathroom or panhandling for money but I am not going to ding the office for the crazy that comes with living in NY. read more

This is particularly bad in the context of the fact that my condition is very difficult to diagnose - it can only be done by establishing a clear baseline and keeping track of symptoms over time... I understand things like this happen but after giving the associate all of my information they put me on hold and forwarded me to somebody else. This next person was very rude and told me they have thousands of customers and it's my job to make sure they have my information even though I went a week before. I was very pleased to receive such great customer service when calling as a new patient and scheduling my first eye exam with Dr. Gross. I am a person who strongly believes in great customer service and this will make or break decisions for me all the time. When I first called I wasn't sure if they took my insurance or not and being a new PSC CUNY member this was my first time seeking vision care with my new member benefits. Once it was confirmed my insurance was accepted I booked an appointment and made the visit. When first entering everyone was friendly with very good energy and professional attitudes. I understand some folks have bad days but first impressions make lasting impressions and this is what made my experience that more enjoyable. The facility is small but very clean and the equipment is up to date. I had a little wait before I was called for the exam but that is expected. Once the pre exam was completed I was ready to see Dr. Gross. I opted for the imaging of the eye instead of the dilation which would have made me have blurred vision and I wanted to be able to just leave when I was done I had already had a long day but this method really was great and efficient. Once the eye exam was over Dr. Gross showed and explained the eye image to me which I thought was very interesting and I was pleased that my eyes were healthy. I've been coming here for the last 2 years and I have loved all my interactions with Dr. Gross and the other employees at the office. Even before stepping into the office, I loved the text and email reminders for my upcoming appointments. They also send these alerts when contact and glasses are ready to be picked up. The team at Chelsea Vision has always been wonderful to work with. Dr. Gross is incredibly patient and takes the time to answer all my questions as well as providing helpful recommendations to better care for my eyes. The managers in the front have always taken the time and effort to explain what my insurance covers and helps me make sure I'm getting the most out of my plan. The process for ordering contacts and getting glasses fitted is incredibly easy and the managers gave me plenty of time to try on different frames and decide. Having recently relocated back to NYC, my spouse and I needed a new optometrist. CVA was well-reviewed, was a participating provider for our vision insurance, and is just a couple of blocks from home. We made appointments. Apparently there is more than one type of medical office in the suite, because upon entering a rather bored woman asked who we were there to see. When we told her, we were directed to speak to someone at the sales counter from which frames are sold. We were asked for our medical insurance cards, which seemed strange since we have VSP (which doesn't have cards). Once they copied them, we were given paperwork to complete and directed to sit in the waiting area, which is a few uncomfortable chairs in a busy corridor area. There wasn't nearly enough seating for the number of people waiting, so we balanced our clipboards and tried to fill out the paperwork. While we were filling it out, an employee came over to give us a hard-sell on Digital Retinal Photography. She claimed it was a much better diagnostic tool than a traditional exam. She couldn't explain what made it better, and she let us know that no insurance actually covers this procedure. When we both declined, our apparent importance to the office dropped significantly. (It reminded me of the treatment one gets in a restaurant when one declines to order a bottle of wine and the waiter figures that since their tip won't be that great, they needn't provide attentive service.) My husband went first. He was struck by the fact that Dr. Gross shared (an admittedly common) last name with one of his cousins and that there was a strong physical resemblance. However, when my husband tried to ask Dr. Gross if it was possible that he was related to this cousin, Dr. Gross snapped that it was impossible and stopped conversing with my husband, except to ask questions directly relevant to the exam. Dr. Gross was friendlier to me, but the eye exam was perfunctory at best. When I asked if he was going to do any additional tests (such as the ones that our former optometrist *routinely* did), he said no that he had conducted the exam our insurance pays for. That was it. He told me my astigmatism was a little worse, and I could check out at the front desk. Both my husband and I were unhappy with our treatment by the staff and the doctor. When I tried to check out, of the four women behind the counter I was told only one could help me. I waited for her while she was on the phone. When she was put on hold she told me to go sit down and she would call me when she was off the phone. I told her I just wanted to check out. She was surprised that I wasn't going to buy frames (2nd profit center rejected by us!), then silently printed out my Rx and handed it to me. This was back in January. Today (mid-April) I discovered that the office had billed our medical insurance, not our VSP plan. I called the office to discuss this with billing, but was informed that their billing person only works on Saturdays (today is Wednesday). When I explained I was unavailable on Saturday, the woman with whom I was speaking said that she could give my number to the billing person and ask for her to call me back, or maybe she herself could help me. When I explained the issue, the woman on the phone told me that the billing person "must have seen something medical in my record that made it necessary to bill my medical insurance instead of my VSP." Really??? The doctor had said that there was nothing wrong with my eyes beyond a slight increase in my astigmatism. I've never before known billing personnel to override a doctor's diagnosis. Plus, I had checked with VSP and they have no record of our having had eye exams in the past year, meaning no attempt had been made to bill them. I replied that the eye exam conducted by Dr. Gross was the most cursory I'd had in decades, and that he had said I was fine. She told me she'd have the billing person call me back. In sum: Staff ranged from dismissive to rude. When we declined the upsell they seemed to lose interest in even pretending to provide service. The doctor's exam was the least thorough I've experienced, and he was rude to my spouse. And now, months later, I get to deal with them again and try to sort out the fact that they billed the wrong insurance. (I have to assume they figured they would get a higher reimbursement from my medical insurance since they didn't even bother to bill VSP; this must have been preplanned since they asked for our health insurance information.) Billing practices are questionable at best. We will not be returning, and urge you to find a provider whose ethics are less questionable. read more

Dr Gross is professional and courteous. He's genuinely interested in your eye health and asks plenty of engaging questions to learn as much about you as possible. I found him through a search for VSP providers and researched his ZocDoc reviews. Everything is true and these guys are the real deal. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. The ladies out front are all smiles and very welcoming. FYI, they share an office with Dentists. No wonder everyone here had great smiles. September 13th was my first experience at Chelsea Vision Associates and I'm glad I chose Dr Gross as my new Optometrist.
