From the outside, it looks just average. And sometimes you really can judge a book by its cover. The pluses: the price is right, here. They definitely try to undercut their competitors. Their pies are the neopolitan style I grew up with so there's that. And it looks pretty good too. The minuses: Bland, bland and more bland. I had a sausage and onions slice and a white slice. The sausage had very little flavor. I suspect they use a less expensive brand because it is average at best. Thank goodness for the onions because without that, this review would be a lot worse. The white slice had zero flavor. It's literally mozzarella and ricotta and nothing more. I put the box in a hot trunk which is my secret to keeping food hot bringing it home. I got home, opened box and dug right in. It was luke warm at best. If you can't get the reheating process right, it makes me wonder where else are you taking shortcuts? My review assistant summed it up best: "If we lived in Wyoming, this would be the best pizza in town. But we live in Central New Jersey and there are so many better options" Disappointing for Sayreville. Overall Rating: D+

We've been here a number of times before when my daughter was younger, so it was a little nostalgic for us. Plenty of seating, a very nice size menu with a great number of salad options, which is what we were in the mood for. We ordered a chicken Caesar salad and a Cobb salad... both were huge! Enough for two portions in one. I loved my Cobb... everything was fresh, the chicken was perfectly seasoned, and well balanced. Goes great with their creamy Italian dressing, which is now a fave for me. They came out with a side of warm bread that was amazing. John, was extremely friendly and made us feel very welcome. So much so, that we are saying that this will be our spot to come and grab lunch or an early dinner more often. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu!

I never have great expectations about these places because if a place is good, one of my friends would have told me about it. Today's find is a place called Stefano' Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria in East Brunswick, NJ. It's located in a strip mall off Rte 535/Cranbury Road. Apparently, their claim to fame is thin crust pizza which is not one of my favorites. I prefer a thicker neopolitan pie but I am open to trying all styles. To say I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement. I ordered two plain slices mostly because that's all that was available in the pizza case. When a pizzeria has an empty case like that, it usually means they have zero foot traffic. And zero foot traffic usually means poor product. But, my assumptions were wrong. The slices were very crunchy with no limpness at all. The outer crust was crispy and moist. The undercrust had brown color and the slices stand straight out at attention when you pick them up. A delightful pizza experience overall. The sauce is tangy and well seasoned and the cheese is premium. Using a bit more sauce wouldn't hurt but it's not a deal breaker. This place is a thin pie lover's dream. If that's your style, you should give it a shot. The words "hidden gem" come to mind. The seating area is nicely appointed and the staff is very helpful. I believe the owner waited on me but I have no evidence to be certain. Either way I am glad I stopped here today. Overall Rating: B+

Through the years, if anyone asked me for a recommendation for pizza, I would ask you what style you preferred. And if your answer was thick neopolitan, I sent you here. I grew up on Staten Island and my favorite pizza shop was Al's Pizza (RIP) on the corner of Jewett Ave and Victory Blvd. That's the same style I grew up eating. That's what I prefer. But I do enjoy other types as well. Michelangelo's reminds me of Al's very much. The pizza at Michelangelo's is thick, hearty and heavy. Tonight, we ordered one plain and one pepperoni. The plain is thick and chewy. It has a small crunch to it. The outer crust is thick and chewy with a light crunch as well. It is not dry at all. The cheese tastes premium and there is plenty of it for you cheese lovers. For me, the star here is the sauce. The pie is generously sauced which I absolutely love. You would think a pie this thick would be droopy, but it surprisingly stands up pretty well. And if it does droop a little, the cheese is so abundant that it holds it together and nothing slides off. The pepperoni has all the same traits. The difference here is the pepperoni adds a lot of grease which I'm not crazy about. I dont believe it's the pie makers fault as pepperoni gives off a lot of grease when cooked. I love the staff here. Friendly and competent. I am always greeted by my first name which is appreciated. There's been some happenings here recently which led me to believe there were issues with the business. It was closed for 8 days without any indication as to why. The phone was also disconnected. Finally on day 4, I saw a sign on the door in the distance but I was late for a ballgame and didn't have time to stop and read it. It's such a good pie that I hope they have resolved the issues permanently whatever they may have been. Overall Rating: A-

Today's stop was a place in Sayreville, NJ called Mia's Pizza Restaurant. Mia's is located in a strip mall at the corner of Bordentown Av. and Jernee Mill Road. Normally, when you look at a front window of a restaurant and see two different varieties of food, you should run away. Mia's boasts both Italian and Mexican food. What I've learned thru the years is, if you say you can make great Mexican food and great Italian food, then you can't make great anything. I ordered one plain slice and one sausage slice and hoped for the best. I was actually optimistic because every table in this place was taken. The good: Both the outer crust and undercarriage were spectacular. Crispy, crunchy and stood up perfectly with no limpness whatsoever. The crust is not dry at all. And the slices are big. Thank goodness I ordered a sausage slice as the sausage added a flavor punch that these slices badly needed. The problems: the sauce is pretty bland. It has a slight hint of basil flavor but there was no other Italian seasoning flavors that I could taste or even see. It also wouldn't hurt if they used a bit more sauce. The cheese is premium but like the sauce, they could use a bit more of it. There isn't a menu in sight. They have a menu board above the front counter. There are no prices on it however. If you aren't going to put out paper menus, then you really need to put prices on the menu board so your customers don't get unpleasant surprises. As much as I wanted to like this place, it just doesn't cut it. They do nothing to differentiate themselves from the stiff local competition. Overall Rating: C

I ordered the Stromboli and the guy asked me what I would like in it. He handmade each one which was surprising to me for such a little hole in the wall spot. I chose to have mine with meatballs, broccoli and spinach. It took about 15 minutes but I got a huge, piping hot cheese filled bread along with the fillings I selected. It was pretty good I must say and add only $7 then just $.95 for each topping it was well worth it.
