Definitely not a Spelman sister (I know, hard to believe...) though I humbly strive to meet their standards of eloquence and tenacity.

On September 16, 2016, Kevin G left a review here on Yelp for Morehouse School of Medicine (MSM)…read more That day was the school's white coat ceremony for the class of 2020. His daughter and my fiancee were part of the same ceremony almost four years ago. On that day, he said, "the long journey begins." Today, May 16, 2020, that journey has ended and another one is about to begin (residency). Today, the 36th commencement exercises for Morehouse School of Medicine were held and the class of 2020 graduated. The students are now alumni and are officially MDs (medical doctors) from this day forward. Congratulations to all! I met my fiancee, Rebecca, when she had just moved back to Atlanta to begin orientation at MSM. Yep, I started dating her just as she was starting medical school. Against her mom's advice and against my friends' advice (friends who were currently dating medical residents), we decided to date and look at us now -- she's graduated, magna cum laude I might add (I'm fully aware I'm shamelessly bragging here), and we're about to get married and begin the next chapter of our lives. We did it! Rebecca is one of two graduates from MSM's class of 2020 who matched with residency programs in ophthalmology. She matched at UNC Chapel Hill and begins her four-year program there next month. To medical students considering dating and people who aren't med students who are considering dating one, my message to you is: It can be done. Before meeting Rebecca, admittedly, I didn't know anything about MSM. These last four years, I've learned a lot. The school feels very close-knit and like a community or family. Everyone seems very supportive of one another. The current president and dean of MSM (since 2014) is Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice, an obstetrician and gynecologist. I like her because she's a fellow proud Ramblin' Wreck from Georgia Tech. She earned her medical degree from Harvard Medical School. She replied to my tweet day on Match Day, the day med students across the country learn which residency programs they matched to, March 20, 2020: https://twitter.com/MSMPres/status/1241056743850991616. MSM Class of 2020 had a 98% match rate which was above average for all US med schools. Great job, Morehouse! MSM is a relatively young school, established in 1975. Since 1981, the school became independent of Morehouse College. Understandably, I and probably most other people, incorrectly thought the two schools were tied together, when in fact they are not. MSM's campus is located just southwest of downtown Atlanta in the part of town known as Atlanta University Center. It's where four HCBUs are located: Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, and Spelman College. In its relatively short history, MSM has produced or been affiliated with some of the top health officials in the country. They include: * Louis Sullivan, MD - 17th Secretary of the US Department of Health and Human Services under President George HW Bush (1989-1993) * David Satcher, MD - 16th Surgeon General of the United States under Bill Clinton and George W Bush (1998-2002) and 13th Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention under Clinton (1993-1998) * Eric Holder, JD - 82nd United States Attorney General under Barack Obama (2009-2015); Holder is former vice chairman of MSM's board of trustees * Regina Benjamin - 18th Surgeon General of the United States under Barack Obama (2009-2013); Benjamin was also an MSM trustee Both Dr. Sullivan and Dr. Satcher spoke at today's ceremonies. Like other schools across the country, from high schools to graduate institutions, MSM's festivities went virtual. I was impressed with what they pulled off. It was quite the production and nicely done, complete with interactive capabilities. You can view the virtual commencement on MSM's website at https://www.msm.edu/commencement/. Along with Drs. Sullivan and Satcher, there was a special musical performance by John Legend (and also a message from him: https://twitter.com/MSMEDU/status/1261692254160379907) and special greetings from former Atlanta Mayor and US Ambassador to the United Nations, Andrew Young (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-SBlHFFPgI). Heck, even Gabrielle Union and Dwyane Wade got in on the action: https://twitter.com/MSMEDU/status/1261676503940698112. And so did Killer Mike: https://twitter.com/MSMEDU/status/1261678978210902016. Morehouse School of Medicine will forever be a part of our lives and we - especially me - are thankful they gave Rebecca a chance. Thank you, MSM, for producing great doctors and for following through on your objectives, some of which include increasing the diversity of the healthcare workforce and focusing on helping people of color and those less-privileged. To conclude, Rebecca's biggest takeaway from her experience at MSM is: "MSM provides a nurturing environment that really helps students become the best versions of themselves." :)

Dr. Valerie Montgomery Rice MD, is a former Grady Memorial Hospital's board member. During Dr…read more Rice's stay, Dr. Rice was notified on several occasions including certified mail, concerning the sexual assault that occurred at Grady Hospital. Dr. Rice and other board members refused to properly investigate this matter. Dr. Rice did not implement any safety measures. I believed Dr. Rice and other Grady Board members did not care. However, resigning from the board did not preclude Dr. Rice from her responsibility concerning this issue. I ( heart patient) was sexually assaulted by Grady Memorial Hospital's male nurse (the sexual predator was not assigned to my room) while I slept in bed. Grady's administrators and legal team immediately attempted to cover up the assault. Grady administrators knew the sexual predator had committed this horrendous act against other hospital patients in the past. Grady's administrators removed the surveillance camera (located near my room door) shortly after the assault and refused to produce the video footage. Grady's doctors and nurses assigned to my care were outstanding. However, a few bad apples will not destroy Grady's prominent legacy. I pray no hospital patient ever experiences the physical and psychological trauma I endure daily. However, I am looking forward to my day in a Fulton County courtroom.
