I attended a brunch last Sunday Nov 19 for the Hanover Theatre Volunteers. I know she doesn't manage the Inn anymore but it was great to see Dawn Eckelberry. She and my Family all graduated from David Prouty. In fact She graduated with my youngest brother Ken. I have been to other functions there like Class Reunions and other occasions. Came for a wedding. Bride paid for room. We were in the guest quarters, room 2. The smell was the snuggle air freshener. Made my husband's eyes hurt. All the fixtures are low. It's a little outdated. The room had a flat screen on the wall located at an angle. Had cable. Big closet. Takes a few minutes for the water to get hot. Tile floors. No drugs or carpets. Check out is at 10 am. Water in this rooms tub is backwards. The towels are not that observant. They do not supply hair dryers. Pillows are overused. read more

As a wedding guest, I wasn't overly impressed. The ceremony was beautiful, and the property is very nice. The servers were very efficient and friendly. However, after the ceremony, we were escorted down to what looked like a closed restaurant. It was so strange. A group of guests stopped at the doors because they too were convinced it couldn't possibly be the entrance to the cocktail hour. One of the doors had the glass broken and was being held together with massive amounts of duct tape and cardboard. Once you get passed the sketchy entrance, you're greeted by an antique horse drawn hearse. Yes, a hearse at a wedding. Somber. But anyhow, you walk into what was once a restaurant I'd assume. Booth tables, and all. Very dark, very musty smelling, and very strange for a wedding cocktail hour! Trying to socialize with the other guests while you're all sitting in four person booths on the outside of the room, is difficult to do. The other part that really got me, was the plastic Dixie cups they give you for all cocktails. I drank a $6 glass of wine out of a plastic Dixie cup. It felt very cheap. The reception room was a refreshing change of pace, but it's up two flights of stairs. You also have to go down those stairs to use the restrooms. The dinner was okay. The cake was delicious. All in all, nice property with efficient staff, but room for serious upgrades. read more

We had my daughters wedding here in October. I can't say enough about Amy and her amazing team. They go above and beyond to make sure your day is perfect. The food was great and everything looked beautiful. Glad we chose this venue over others we looked at that were alot more expensive but didn't offer more. Amy helped us every step of the way with planning our wedding here and clearly has a ton of experience working with all different types of couples. She offered advice when we needed it, but also stepped back and allowed us to have our own vision for our special day. If you are looking at wedding venues do not skip this one ! Perhaps skip their website (it's pretty outdated) and look at their Facebook page instead, or go for a look in person. They won't take advantage of you with extra rental fees like other venues will, and they are super flexible if you need to make any changes during the planning process, or even the day of the event ! When my fiance and I were looking for a reception site, we fell in love with the Spencer Country Inn. It was everything we were looking for; it had the old country charm, delicious food at the right price and great service. The food is fantastic and Phyllis (the owner) does not up-charge for weddings. If the chicken marsala is $14.95 on the dinner menu, it is $14.95 on the wedding menu also. In addition, she does not charge a fee to use the facility. Other places we looked charged $4,000 or more to use the facility and that got you nothing, but access to the grounds. NOT the Spencer Country Inn...you pay for your food. She has owned it since 1981 and her exact words were "when I got married, I did not think it was fair that I had to pay a rental fee, so I don't want to do that to my brides." Phyllis catered to all of my requests and executed them perfectly. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was wonderful. People could not stop talking about how delicious it was. I can not speak highly enough of both Phyllis and her assistant (Louisse). Even if you're just going there for dinner it is fantastic. The brunch on Sunday is only $10.95 and it is phenomenal. (I questioned it because it was so "cheap", but it was amazing!) Check it out...it's worth it! read more

My husband and I got married here, and people are still talking about how great the food was. We had a buffet, nothing fancy, but everything was delicious! More importantly, everything was well within our budget. We got married outside on a beautiful day in July. Phyllis was extremely helpful and our wedding day went off without a hitch. Since we had a daytime wedding, they let us rent out the tavern downstairs for an after-party, too. The rooms are very reasonably priced. We had dinner here. We also attends a wedding here. The dining room dinner was ok. Service was slow even though they were not busy. The side Salad was small but good. I had the chicken ala king. Nothing fancy and not very tasty. Hubby had the stuffed chicken. That was good and flavorful. Rolls were not good. The cheese and crackers were a nice addition. Prices were on the high side. I probably would not have come here again had it not been for the wedding. My rating for this was 2 stars. The wedding was much better. For being the last table the food was very prompt and not much later than table number one. Very impressed. The stuffed chicken was juicy and very tasty. It came with baked potatoes (with sour cream) and mixed veggies. The rolls were fresh. Prime rib was on the rare side but large and tasty. The sides were the same. Soup and salad with the entree. The layout of the seating was nice and not overbearing. Staff was very friendly. My rating for this event was 4.5. I picked the rating based on both of these events. read more

The building is old and has a lot of neat vintage artifacts, and that's probably this place's only forte. No one in our group of 12 absolutely loved their food. My wife and I toured the Spencer Country Inn as a possible wedding venue several years ago. While doing so, we stayed for their breakfast buffet. The facility didn't end up fitting our vision of "the big day," but that is not at all the fault of the Inn; to say it was beautiful would be a gross understatement. The Spencer Country Inn has a delightful rustic feel that welcomes every guest who makes the trip. The food was absolutely exquisite at well, which is a high compliment considering we only ate breakfast. While I cannot quite recall the exact details of the spread, I can assure that we did not walk away hungry. Options were multitudinous, and all were delicious. We haven't been out much since the beginning of Covid.. We did take out from Spencer country Inn and the meal was excellent. My husband never finishes a meal.. He couldn't stop eating the Veal Milan! The next week we ended up going in to have dinner.. It felt safe, clean and everyone was so pleasant. I got the prime rib and had 3 meals out of it. Cooked to perfection. I went here for dinner and the food took over an hour to come out. There were only two parties in the restaurant, yet the servers did not bother checking in, refilling water cups, or assuring us that the food was coming shortly. When the food finally did come, it was terrible. There was steak that was just about raw and cold in the center, the fish dishes were terribly dry, and the chicken meal was not only bad but has made my dad sick as can be. The waiter did not apologize or do anything to try and fix the bad experience. He simply justified the wait time and bad food by saying "we had a big party to get out before you." We recently went to the Spencer Country Inn with a group of friends. Half of us ordered the sirloin steak and the other half ordered the stuffed chicken. The restaurant is lovely inside with very rustic decor and many unique decorations. Our server was very pleasant and attentive. We were served a fresh small garden salad, it was good the dinner rolls were fresh but very cold. We were offered steamed broccoli or ratatouilla , baked potato, rice or red bliss. Our meals arrived and we certainly we're impressed. The steaks looked great the chicken came with gravy which two people requested not to have . Thernew as no problem with getting the chicken without the gravy. We were very glad we had very sharp steak knives.. Not one of the four people in our party was able to cut this horrid piece of meat without "sawing" it. This meat was so tough and in edible , every person left at least eighty percent of it on their plate. The baked potato was perfect as we're the red bliss potatoes. The ratatouille got mixed reviews some ok others saying it was tasteless. I like my broccoli raw when I am having it with a dip as an appetizer. This "steamed" broccoli was probably passed over a steaming pot. The chicken was atrocious, only one person in our party ate more than one third of it. Ok so you have a bad meal, good service but not one person was asked how the meal was. The steak cost $18.95 and the chicken was $15.95. Coffee was offered and accepted and charged $1.50 a cup. Terrible steak so tough it needed to be sawed, the chicken was tasteless, the only good thing was the company of our friends and the atmosphere. Oh , the coffee was very good. To add insult to injury the room was frigid. If you go you may get lucky, but don't count on it. read more

I came here for a wedding tour, and the owner seemed really nice, and on top of things.. however I could not get past the antique items in the Banquet Hall. I know someone who will be getting married here this summer but I think I will keep on looking for myself. They ARE very affordable and it seems like a good option. I do like the charm of the place, I just wish it had more lighting in the hall and also they didn't have all of those random items in the room. I attended a wedding here last night, I was a part of the wedding party so my thoughts of this facility started Friday evening. Amy the event coordinator is not very pleasant. This location does not have an ATM, for wedding guests this can be a bit of a concern. The day of the wedding, I asked for our room keys and the women at the front desk appeared that she hated her job. The rooms are cold, drafty and dirty. The wind was blowing the room doors open. I get it is a country in but there definitely need to be updates made. Due to the weather we were in the reception hall for photos. The amount of disfunction was appalling. Many of us have worked at a large banquet hall growing up where the wedding set up is done the night before, after the rehearsal dinner. While pictures were being done Amy was upset that there were people in the way of your staff, but we all knew what the weather was going to be like this should have been planned for on the facility end. The bar... The bar did not open until 5:30 and guests were arriving at 5pm. This upset a number of the guests, some went to the bar in the actual restaurant asked to buy an appetizer and told that because they were here for the wedding they could not buy an appetizer and sit and get a drink there. Once the bar was open, we were advised that they could not sell pitchers of soda, they did sell one but after that no more. The other concern is that when we asked for a pitcher of water at the actual table (bridal party) we were told that they could not do that but they were happy to keep filling our water glasses. This only happened 2 times. There were several broken glasses on the dance floor over the evening, again staff was no where to be found to clean it up, after several minutes, and guests cleaning most of the glass up until a staff member could come over with a dust pan and brush, a hand was cut and your location does not have paper towels.to simply dry hands off. The air driers are not going to assist in the stopping of blood. The main bar did not have bandaids and the injured party had to go to the front desk where the lady at the desk did not turn around. We went to the room where the rehearsal dinner was held and asked a waitstaff to assist. The Food: Our table had to ask for buns. Our salad's some had dressing and others had no dressing. We were sharing plates to make sure people got dressing. Overall this location needs a huge facelift, more staff and a friendlier staff and more organization. read more

We had a party of 8. Started off good. Not too many cars outside nor did we see a lot of people seated but they have various rooms. They promptly served water and their cracker & cheese spread. We ordered our meals consisting of Filet, NY Sirloin, Baked Chicken, Haddock & Swordfish. After waiting for nearly an hour for our food the filet was red and cold in the center, all fish and chicken was extremely dry and not fresh but frozen. NY had a lot of grizzle. The server nor the other wait staff acknowledged us during our hour wait. Water glasses sat empty. No explanation as to why the wait. After complaining about the filet as well as the wait time, we were told they had a large party to serve before us and that's all. No apologies. They did take the filet off the check. I've worked in this business and customer service is key. If you had a good server it could off set the lousy food. We still would not have been satisfied but we would likely go again. My husband and I go to Spencer Country Inn on a fairly regular basis and have always enjoyed our meals. The service can vary, but 90% of the time we are pleased with the service. We've always enjoyed our meals and wine choices. Look for their coupon in the local paper ... there's one in there every week for half-off your second entree. The decor may not be to everyone's taste, but we do enjoy the antiques and the rustic atmosphere. The Wednesday auction nights are another story ... yikes! But in general, in our opinion, it's worth the visit. read more

When we arrived the room I was shown for the Buffet was changed, not for the better. Food items paid for were missing and we had to walk through a wedding party and another group of guests to eat! We had a dinner reservation here for our friend's birthday, but never made it to the front door. There was several of us all ready to come here for dinner....most of us from Connecticut, but after the reservation was made, we had to cancel, so one of the ladies in our group called to cancel the reservation. She spoke to an older lady who was beyond rude to the point where our friend had to call back to speak to a manager in regards to the service she received on the phone. The receptionist gruntled and pretty much told our friend that she was lying and even took the phone and laughed to her coworker saying, "You won't believe it, they're wanting to cancel a dinner reservation!" Having several of us almost traveling all the way from Connecticut, this wasn't funny. Our friend who called to cancel was quite appalled as we only heard good things about this place. But when she mentioned the brash rudeness of the older lady who answered the phone, we all decided that we would not be going here. If the one answering the phone is that rude, we could only imagine what the rest of the staff would be. The manager was spoken to and she stated she would speak with the lady, but unfortunately that first impression stuck. We immediately changed our venue and needless to say received an incredibly warm and friendly reception from the place we have chosen to go. Too bad because we were also checking the venue out for a wedding coming up, so this place is off our list. Came here with my family for lunch. Not sure what the attraction is. When I think country inn I think of charming ,clean, comforting, cute. Spencer inn was more old, dusty, dying, unkept, and most of all creepy. Lots of creepy pictures everywhere. Let's move on to the "food".... first of all the waiters are slow. Second the menu is terrible. Who wants to eat any of the food on that menu. We ordered and it took at least 30-45 min for food. Salad came out and my GMA started coughing b/c the house(sysco) dressing was so sour. Steak sandwich looked like a mixture of dog and cat food with stale bread. Fries were soggy. Fried Shrimp was terrible. They left them in the frier too long and who knows how long that batter has been sitting around. All sauces come out of some cheap Sysco or us foods bulk bottle. Steak tips looked like someone plopped a salsbury steak from middle school out of a can onto rice and cut it up. Could describe it another way but might be a bit graphic. Swordfish steak was pathetic and overcooked. Scallops were tiny and had no sear on them. Prices are not high but for the quality this is dollar menu food. I cant even talk about seasoning because the food would be horrible regardless. Bad quality product, bad cooks, bad evaluation of price, bad menu, bad atmosphere. Think i almost fell asleep.Save your money and time please. Not a reason to eat here. Glad I didn't have to pay for that embarrassment of a meal. Somebody put this place out of its misery. read more
