Ladd's is always a reliable favorite and worth the trip. I've gone many times over the years. Prices are reasonable and the portions are great. There are two sides to the restaurant -- the original restaurant side that is much more quiet (and you will likely get a seat more easily) and the bar side that is first-come, first-serve for seating. This place looks like a quaint New England restaurant. We showed up at 5pm on a Saturday and they were able to seat our large party. I can't speak for anyone else but the food I had was okay but very dated and under seasoned. We ordered the fried pickles which were only ok. The clam chowder was thin and very underwhelming. Hubby had the lobster bisque which was not good. We shared the eggplant parm which was gummy. The salmon Almandine, although a dated dish, was good. Although everything we tried needed salt. They were very friendly and offered fresh bread which we waited for our food. I personally wouldn't return to Ladd's but I wouldn't tell someone not to try it. read more

Large group dinner of about 35 people following my father's funeral. Dinner arrangements were made thru Adam & the owner. Both were amazingly helpful and kind. We opted for having the choices of prime rib, chicken parm, or baked cod! All three were lovely. I had the prime rib... I was able to cut it with a fork...super tender/full of flavor! The service was impeccable. All requests were met with grace. The overall ambiance was a traditional New England family restaurant, very clean & comfortable. Group dinner for 20, that we annually have at Ladd's in November. Comfortable venue, albeit a bit tight in the dining room, but is in an old house nicely converted to a restaurant years ago. Appetizers are great: home made crab Rangoons and pot stickers. (Great sauce). Pork chops are great, as is the turkey dinner. All the seafood is prepared just a bit different from the normal restaurant you may find. They also have a short menu of $14.99 dinners. Good pricing, and you get what you pay for. Quality and something with a bit of a teak to the preperation. We always have enough for a take-home box, too. If your in the Paxton/Rutland/Holden area, Ladd's is worth a stop. read more

This is some of the best pizza I have ever tasted. The only downside is the main dining area, which seems a bit old-fashioned. However, the bar area is a real gem. It has a lively, energetic atmosphere that makes you want to stay awhile. The bartenders are friendly and welcoming. They have a talent for making you feel at home, even on your first visit. The outdoors, which looks like something out of Old Sturbridge Village, didn't match the inside at all. There were several dozen tables shoved as close to each other as possible, which made it very difficult for the servers to get around, and also made it difficult for any diners who might want to get to a restroom. After ordering appetizers, it took quite a while for the server to return for our entree order. It also took a very long time to get the entrees, and because our party had another commitment to get to, we ended up having to take our food to go. I had ordered the steak tips and asked for them to be done "medium". When I was able to warm up the food and eat it a little later, I literally could not eat the steak tips. They had an odd, almost pickled flavor, and tasted "off" like maybe they'd been aging a little too long. The vegetables were good enough. Nothing outstanding. The others in my party weren't enthusiastic about their meals, either, but I don't want to comment on their food since I didn't taste it personally. In conclusion, I will not be returning to Ladd's. Off the beaten trail - so to speak - and yet, on your way out of Worcester, MA....heading westwards in the direction towards Route 2 in general, you may zip through the vicinity of townships like Rutland & later on, Oakham ... but hey, good enough. JUST BE SURE TO CHECK THE MAPS here for location, location, location - cool? That said, onto Ladd's Restaurant itself. There is NOTHING like being able to write a concise review of a place AFTER you've dined there say several times in the past; this helps with the overall review because, mainly, those good AND bad points have a way of remaining in both short term and long term memory, capisce? FIRST - OUTSIDE appearances. Looks pretty neat, lawn manicured with brick walkway, garden(s) small but at least tended well enough. On the ground level, there are benches to sit upon should the evening "crush" delegate you to a 1/2 hour wait so to speak. That never seems to happen for us, and honestly, this might indicate EFFICIENCY happening in the INSIDE of this joint. Go figure. Turns out, the place IS run by people paying attention (as best as they can) and these same folks again and again show up by your elbow, pleasantly asking, "So ... how is everything going this evening?" - that kind of restaurant-speak and gladly received I might add !! But hey, BACK to OUTSIDE appearances, shall we? Guys, I hope you're up and current with the AWNINGS outside the very front entrance of Ladd's. Put it this way, there is no way around it. The ground level awnings, pleasantly a soft blue to behold, remind us that people care about appearances and that indicates "all is well and good." HOWEVER, I beg to differ about the UPSTAIRS/Upper Level blue awnings! I'd have snapped a photo but declined to do so, for truthfully, if it is bats or pigeons or whatever ... those awnings up above need to come down, get washed before being assigned their original positions so to speak. Eegads, guys! It should be OBVIOUS and, well....a couple of trips up the ladder, dunk the things in shampoo that wont drain colors from the fabric and VOILA! DONE!! Its been YEARS, folks....let us not kid ourselves, k? Like NIKE tells us again and again...JUST DO IT. Done. Now... lets go inside. Ladd's quickly convey to the world that they've got that typical New England tavern-ish existence going, and the locals are well-supplied with whatever refreshments are ongoing. Each time I entered into the Dining Room entrance, I could easily spot most of the bar patrons sitting most comfortably within the confines of that section of Ladd's. TVs posted in strategic places, a wide bar to keep an eye on drinks, keys, wallets, et al - you know the drill.... What I see EACH time I take a look into matters there is ... people seem comfortable, established, watched-out-for. There ya go...its called....CAMARADERIE. Here its a genuine thing, whereby whether its the Sox or the Bruins or the Patriots ... its all good, guys. One by one or two-by-twos, they file in, quick to get their boilermakers tended to along with whatever house special is on the runner boards for these guys. It all fits is my point. Everyone, far as I can tell, knows everyone else. Typical New England extended family, guys. Isn't that what we're looking for here? Now the Dining Room. Exactly WHO the owner is...WHO the managers are... who knows? I'd ever go further than this ... if the food is THAT good...who cares, right? EXACTLY. All I can attest to is ... that Prime Rib looked DANDY this last time and I so wish I'd taken that one on the list of House Specials, folks! YUM-ohhh! Good to know! (hint hint). Of course, when you order items like, say, chicken parm ... you have to have realistic expectations too, right? Put it this way - if Chef Ramsay entered into the back entrance and began asking questions about whether food is fresh or frozen before hitting the grill or going in the Blodgett over....guys...honestly....do you tell the clientele which was which? I confess, I've had chicken parmesan that was SUPER fresh ... and it certainly is revealed to the palate (yours and mine, hopefully) as to whether it is the one...or the other. AND BE REALISTIC HERE, too, yes? The secret to all of this is naturally going to be if the restaurant has that kind of $$$ to go out, get tons of birds skinned, de-boned, etc etc. I mean that takes TIME and unless you've got a pair of sous chefs handy, that is a giant hurdle that is best left to urban hang outs with lots of dough to spare. Put it this way - if you ask the servers at Ladd's whether the bird is fresh or frozen, they'll be truthful, no question about it. THAT is one very, very important thing with me. Of course, one could get cynical even, come back with.."If you already KNOW the pork/chicken/beef ISN'T fresh, why are you asking?" comes to mind, but hey.....TRUST is everything, right? I've lived in Rutland for 26 years and just last weekend got around to trying Ladd's. My boyfriend and I weren't super-hungry so we "just" got some apps - bacon wrapped scallops (on a generous bed of rice pilaf) and a chicken quesadilla as big as my head (we took half home!) He had a reasonably-priced draft beer. Good value and delicious food. If you haven't been to Ladds Restaurant in Rutland recently you owe them another look. This place was crowded! Most of the empty booths and tables were reserved but Adam our host was able to accommodate us by moving a few tables around. It took him a few minutes but we ended up in a nice table for two in a delightful spot. Tiffany our server was at our table shortly after we settled in and took our drink orders. My wife had the specialty drink "Cranberry Rita" ($9.50) while I just wanted a soft drink as I was driving. She liked her drink very much telling me it was delicious. I ordered the regular size 'Prime Rib' ($24.99) which was plenty for me, but they do offer King Cut for $27.99. It came out a perfect medium rare, well seasoned and very tender. Now prime rib without au Jus is like kissing your sister thankfully Ladds provides plenty and it's well seasoned. All in all I'm my opinion one of the best in the area. It came with a salad, baked potato and green beans. Three are several other choices too. My wife chose the Chicken Marsala ($18.99) which came with a side of angel hair pasta. Surprisingly it came in a huge bowl. She mentioned that the dish needed a bit of salt. She throughly enjoyed the Caesar Salad. The portion size was more than adequate. We ended up taking home much of the chicken, and my leftover green beans which I'm sure was fresh not frozen. As mentioned before, and considering how crowded it was at the time the service was excellent. Adam readjusted the air conditioning and asked my wife if she was comfortable with the new airflow. No one has ever been so concerned with our comfort. Tiffany was a real treasure as well, making sure we were enjoying our experience. Great food, and excellent service and reasonable prices adds up to a great time. No wonder it was so busy. Next time we go I'll make sure to call for reservations. read more

I hadn't been here in 10 or so years but found ourselves in the area last weekend. We came in about 7pm and sat in the dining room. We ha a fairly new waiter but he was extremely friendly and attentive, if a little nervous. He appreciated being overtipped! Drinks came quickly and were made perfectly. I ordered Prime Rib with mashed potato and green beans, my wife the chicken parmigiana over angel hair. Her meal was fantastic in all aspects. Prime rib was excellent and an amazingly thick cut. Mashed potatoes were very lumpy (one of my pet peeves) and to me inedible. Green beans were fresh and delicious. We passed on dessert. I'll definitely return to try out the lounge side soon. Hit or miss- we like the pizza but wish they would use less cornmeal when stretching the dough. Boneless buffalo wings are a family favorite- although we have gotten take out more than once that over fried and inedible. Again - hit or miss. This past time will probably be our last trip. Salad was ice cold and some of the lettuce was black and gooey, cucumbers were soggy, onions dried out and old. Waitress was indifferent at best. Was looking for a place to eat on a Friday night where everyone was busy and me and my fiancée stumbled across Ladd's. Place looked pretty busy but we were greeted and seated immediately. Very nice dining room for a nice romantic setting or a lounge area with a bar to have a couple drinks. The food was reasonably priced and the service was great, my server as well as the others I could hear talking were well versed on the menu and knew all the right questions to ask, giving me a feel that everyone here cares about what they do. As someone who is heavily involved in food service it made me very happy to know how passionate the people at Ladd's are about their business. The menu has all the right foods and there is definitely something for even the pickiest eaters. There is only one very small inconvenience and I'm not sure exactly what caused it but it wasn't too much of a bother but in the dining room the lights would sometimes be very bright and then all of a sudden they would dim down, but this takes nothing away from what this place offers.
