Time & time again I've been meaning to get out to Black and White in Spencer, & it finally happened this weekend! Big debate of the evening -- mozzarella sticks or circles? I was team circles (more mozzarella, right? ). What's your go-to? Also had a side Caesar, & for our entrée we shared the Rib Eye Surf & Turf, topped with sautéed scallops & lobster in a creamy garlic sauce Cam, our waiter, was super friendly and attentive. My wife and I stop at the B&W about 4-5 times a year, as it's on the way home from our doctor appt's in nearby Worcester. So, the last week of August, we had the chance to stop in for a late lunch while heading back home. Consistently very good to great. Pizza's are fantastic. This stop we pasta'd ourselves. She having lasagna, and me, Ravioli and added seared scollops. We started with a shared cranberry, mandarin, feta and spinach salad, which was very, very good. I hope it stays on the menu for awhile. The lasagna was very good, very cheesy, but my companion mentioned it had a few blackened, slightly burnt, edges, which she doesn't like. (Me, crunchy carbon is good in small amounts. I'm a farm boy, and you learned to eat anything as a kid. Just sayin') It also could have used a tad more spice or pepper for the ground beef in it, as maybe the various cheeses over-powered the meat flavor. My wife said she should have gotten an eggplant parmesan, or the ravioli, as she said she hasn't had her eggplant fix for the month. All in all, still had enough for a portion to take home. The B&W does give you big portions on most meals. The Ravioli and sautéed scallops were excellent. (Truth be told: If I get pasta, it's often Ravioli.) Cheesy goodness, great ravioli's, nice marinara with a bit of a spice (no need for chili flakes, really), excellent scallops, and not the teeny little ones, either; nice plump medium sized. Had enough for a lunch's worth as takeout, too. Too bad my diet and diabetes doesn't allow for that much cheese more than once a month.... I often order a martini (gin/dry) with dinner, and I have always gotten a very good one here. No change in that this trip. Consistent B+ to A- drinks. We often skip desserts, but they look great (you can see them in the display when you enter the restaurant.) Service, often very good. Often I see older servers in the early afternoon, and Tom was on point. Thanks, Tom. That said, we all know, with some reviewers refusing to acknowledge, that restaurant help is extremely hard to find (Ya notice all the signs in the doors lately?), let alone train and then retain. A good server works HARD. So sometimes a little slack may be warranted. Been there; done that. There is a difference between critique and criticism. Some reviewers should learn it. And those that don't want to tip; stay home. Don't be cheap *&^%#... Just my soap-box. The discussion between wages vs tipping is for another political or social page on reddit, imho. Extra kudos to them for having restrooms with BOTH a paper towel dispenser and the air-dryer. Choice is wonderful. Let's talk pricing. It's post Covid, and the world has changed. Most anything is no longer inexpensive. maintaining quality and portions is costly now, and You get what you pay for. Lasagna $16.99. Ravioloi and Scallops $38.99 (market price for the scallops). Cranberry Mandarin salad $13.99. Martini (Tangueray) $11.50. And as there is often a take-homes worth on the meal, I think the prices are on par. Parking plenty, outdoor seating if you like that, with igloo's in the winter, clean restrooms, often not a lot of kids making noise, bar patrons often not hammered, it's a good family food stop. We stopped on a Monday around 1pm, and that appeared to be the Seniors day of the week for them, so, they may prep or stock-up more common ordered foods ahead of time the elders tend to prefer. Just a data point to file away. Also, they open at 11am, 7 days a week - they are probably the only full-fledged, sit-down restaurant with a 15 mile radius that does that. The B&W maybe just short of an excellent rating for the years we've been going there (as always, YMMV), but as an all-around stop, and the limited alternative's within, say. 30-40 minutes, I 'm going with a solid good+. If there were half-stars, I would add that on. 2 Regular customers satisfied again. read more

Tried the Igloo out for the first time in the pouring rain. Well set up with warm blankets inside as well. Julia our sever was great!! Getting us everything we needed despite the rain and cold. The food was also well done enjoyed every bite of it:) read more

It has been a while since I pulled into the B&W, and the lot was packed! Still, my son and I were seated without delay. Where we sat was louder than I remember, but this wouldn't be any different than any other area with a lot of TVs going on sports. It was quite the popular spot during my visit. The booth was cozy. Tom was our server and he was attentive and on top of everything. The menu is extensive and there are plenty of options to choose from. As appetizers go, we went with the fresh mozzarella in circle form. It was gooey and stretchy in a way that was pleasantly surprising. For my entree, had the mushroom and broccoli alfredo with angel hair pasta which turned out to be an excellent choice. This was one of the best alfredo sauces I have had in many years. My girl and I were out on the bike yesterday and stopped in here for a quick bite! We walked in and the place just had a cool vibe. It was a little dark but after a long day it was relaxing. The beer selection was just what the lady was looking for. I had a water and was stoked when she asked if I wanted a lemon or not. Bc I don't like lemon in my water! Food was amazing. The special chicken pot pie in a bread bowl is FIRE! 10/10. The beef stew is also absolutely delicious.

So good! One of my fav lasagnas of all times which is saying A LOT because I'm Italian from NY. I literally garden and can my own tomatoes and garlic plus make my own red sauce. Let me tell you this lasagna is up there. Really good Mexican pizza and bacon mac n cheese stuffed egg rolls. Awesome local selection of beers. Cute place with fast friendly service. The Black and White Restaurant is a local favorite. We asked if they could make us a small pizza with scallop and bacon with their olive oil with garlic topped with mozzarella cheese. It was fantastic!! It was very filling considering it was a small and a bit pricey, however we will definitely order again!!! read more

We rented a an igloo and we got there early so we decided to go to the bar. The bar was busy yes but a bartender made contact with us several times and didn't service us. She waited on her regulars knowing that we were sitting right next to them. Finally another wait on us and we finally got drinks . The igloo from the waitress was great. Her name was Jessica. The food was subpar, it was not great. I've always heard great things about the black-and-white, but we will never go again. My husband's fries were cold. He's not one want to complain. I got the turkey dinner- it was ok nothing great. It was not wonderful. Our drinks were great, our service person was great on the igloo-but we will never eat there again. It's the worse than your regular pub food. We have nothing great to say about it except for our server in the igloo and our drinks -we will not recommend this place to anyone. Service was great (though I think their best hostess no longer works there). Food was excellent; I highly recommend the baked macaroni and cheese. You can tell just by the picture that it's the perfect combo of creamy with a crunchy top. It was great to see so many vegetarian options; I'm so used to not having too many choices to pick from. So I went back to Black & White Grille with a friend for lunch as we were wanting to try having a meal in an igloo!!! The igloo was amazing!! So much fun!! I wasn't sure how warm it would be, but it was really warm!!! Like take your coat off and roll up your sleeves warm!!! It was a nice sunny day and so fun to sit in the igloo and look out at the snow!! I would definitely recommend it. Our server was great, and wore a mask in our igloo. However, the gyro was disappointing. The meat in the gyro was cold and dry. The onion rings were ok. I'm keeping my 4 stars because of the experience of the igloo and because my previous meal was delicious. Maybe they were having an off day? Or gyros aren't something they make especially good? Soooo disappointed. We went to the Black & White tonight to celebrate our anniversary... We have been there many times and love the calzone. our server was Valerie. It took a while for her to acknowledge us and take our drink order...then it took longer to actually get the drink order.... She finally took our dinner order and 45 minutes later we were still waiting for it. At no point did she come by and check on us or provide any kind of acknowledgement that it was taking longer than normal. She didn't even check to see if we wanted another drink or anything else while we were waiting. When the order came, they brought my husband a pizza instead of a calzone. I heard him order and he did not order a pizza. Our server basically gave us an attitude and said that he ordered the pizza. We didn't want to argue so he said he would eat it. When he tried it it was greasy and not good so we sent it back. We felt ignored and like we were a burden that our server didn't want to deal with. We tried to be as polite as we could but I wish I could get that hour and a half of my life back... Unfortunately, we will not be back. read more

Food: Prime Rib was undercooked. Grilled Ribeye was undercooked and tough and rubbery. It was not a real ribeye cut. Not sure what is was. Service was very slow. Drinks came in very slow, so the bar service sucked. Food came in very slow, about a hour. And the food was 50/50. This was a terrible experience with the food. The waitress was excellent however, but the chefs should be working someplace else or they should go back to culinary school. Overall, it was depressing for us to pay top dollar for lousy food. The owners need to review and inspect the quality of the food or they should hire more experienced chefs. Or they should sell the restaurant to new owners who understand the business. Unfortunately, the waitress was the only positive experience we had. I have been her a few times and I enjoyed the pizza. I think the Black and White should stick only to pizzas. As a culinary arts professor, with 10 years of experience in France, Switzerland and Germany, I am being extremely realistic in my assessment of this restaurant. It does not please me to write this negative review about such a popular and successful establishment because I know that most of the customers that go there are satisfied with the food. However, since the four of us were not satisfied, I wanted to give the owners the benefit of the doubt and I hope they will dig in to these reviews and fix the issues that they have. I wish them the best and I will return someday soon with an open mind. I hope that this review does not reflect on this fine establishment with a negative impact. I truly believe that this restaurant has a lot of potential to be great, for every customer, every time. read more

This place gets beyond packed... good sign to see so many people at a place you have never tried. Don't try and come during dinner time on the weekend without a reservation or be prepared to wait 60-90 minutes. Part of the wait problem was the hostesses weren't filling empty tables. We were taken right away when we came in for our reservation but there were a few empty tables even with all the people waiting. Then as we were eating two booths near us emptied and were open for more than 20 minutes before they started filling them. Very poor organization... As expected, with the place so busy service was very slow but friendly. We started with the honey sriracha shrimp appetizer and the tomato and mozzarella caprese salad. Shrimp were huge and very good. The salad was missing the basil but the mozzarella and tomatoes were very fresh. My husband had the salmon special which was ok but they chunked the salmon into small pieces which made it dry. My seafood casserole was ok. We will definitely give this place another try during not so peak time since we have heard so many good things and we really like to support local businesses. read more

We have been here a few times and everything was good. But yesterday we arrived at 11:55am and we did not get our food until 1:32pm. First we were told that they were behind because of the large amount of customers. Then we were told the cook misplaced our orders. And when the food finally came, the orders still were not right. This is a nice spot in the middle of nowhere and I like local family run businesses. The front staff meaning the host station was very good but make sure to make a reservation. We were early for ours to our igloo. So we sat at the bar for a drink and an app. The bartender seemed very overwhelmed and couldn't focus on the guests at the bar but we were waiting for our reservation so we had time. The bartender is costing the owners lots of money with over pours. I could only have one drink because it was so strong lol. So I switched to beer, corona and then Heineken. Both were skunked so that was joyful. We got the ranch potato skins which were good and big but the small cup of sour cream was not enough. We finally got to our ripped igloo that was colder than a witches tit in a cast iron bar. We only had a beer and a salad and left. Too cold. Won't do the igloo thing again. read more

well i thought this was great, was here once before, many years ago , and in that time i know it was closed for a while but has been reopened now for a while, nice inside and lovely outside seating area including one for your puppy, we ate outside, the pumpkin martini was excellent, the feta app was excellent, the maple bacon wings very good and different, i had a little blue cheese with mine to make them even better, and the beer burger also very good, we stopped as sort of a surprise visit, and were very happy we did!!! read more

We finally got a chance to try the black and white grill after apple picking today. There was eight of us in our party our waitress was great got us our drinks and our appetizer order. The menu is outstanding subs/Soups/ seafood/steaks and more .. I got the chicken Marsala my husband got the chicken Cordon Bleu both fabulous. As well as chicken Parm , homemade Mac and cheese and a BLT sandwich with fries. All amazing, they have an awesome kids menu (more than 6 items) everything under six dollars except for the haddock and Fries that was about$8 And they got a generous scoop of ice cream afterwards included with the meals . I found the Price is very reasonable even for adult meals about $13-$33 I highly recommend we will definitely be back!! During the pandemic, I have ordered from Black & White Grille about 3 times. It's super simple to be able to call in the order and pick up at the window outside. The first time I tried B&W, I ordered the Athena pizza which is their take on a Mediterranean style pizza and it's very flavorful. The onion rings we ordered to go along with the pizza were awesome. Crunchy, crispy and just the right amount of batter. The other 2 times I've ordered the Gyro original with rice and French fries as my sides. They make their own tzatziki sauce so, naturally, I ask them to load it up every time and that's exactly what they do. I do have to say, their menu items are unique enough, it keeps me coming back. Side note: If the girl answering the phone could be less snobby, it would make the experience a bit better but the food is worth dealing with it. read more

My husband and I had enjoyed Black and White Grille on past visits. When Covid hit, we were happy they set up a tent outside so we could enjoy a nice meal there. We visited July 31st and were seated at a table for 2 outside. It was a beautiful night. The sun was shining in my eyes and the waitress was kind and helped us over to another table where the sun wasn't hitting so hard. We ordered our food which included salad. When I started eating my salad, I noticed black pieces all throughout and in the dressing. My husband then saw it in his, as well. He pulled several black pieces out and took photos to inspect. They looked like droppings to us. We informed the waitress and she said it was fresh balsamic dressing but she would get the manager to come over. The manager came over and was very defensive and without even looking said it was Kens Balsamic which they always use and that dressing has black pieces in it. She was a bit curt and not at all accommodating and we felt she displayed very poor customer service. She acted, we felt, as if we were bothering her. We eat Kens Balsamic Dressing all the time and never have we had black pieces in it. We were turned off but did enjoy the rest of our meal and re-ordered our salad with different dressing. We were a little surprised they did not check in with us again at the end of the meal and, unfortunately, we left knowing we would not return and would remember this incident. We know sometimes food goes bad at restaurants and it needs to be replaced, but in the end, customer service always wins out and we do not feel we were treated properly by the manager. For the customer service, I would rate lower, but for the other food we enjoyed, it saved this review from a lower rating. read more

It used to be very good. Prices have gone way up and now they put a cold cut style "chicken" in many items that say "grilled chicken," such as quesadillas and gyros (and they're Greek!). I brought my husband and three teenage kids here for a return to college dinner celebration 1-20-22. I reserved an igloo for 7. We had the best time!! The food was spot on for upscale bar food appetizers and then burgers, calzone and seafood platter were all devoured! Finally, dessert! My son raved and raved about his candy-bacon-sundae; honestly I've never seen him swoon over ANY food as he did this dessert!!! We all were completely surprised by his sudden animation from a fairly stoic guy! We are huge Gifford fans so we heartedly indulged in ice cream while the temps outside said "feels like 12 degrees". The igloo warmed up w 5 of us in it but as the night broached 9pm the temps were out-pacing us. Service was great and we knew how hard it was for them because we noticed indoor servers seemed sparse and those there were hustling! What a terrific evening.
