It pains me to leave reviews like this but I just wanted to warn others, or at least let the salon know. I was looking for a layered cut in the area and came across Sphere. The reviews seemed OK but I am realizing none of them were recent. Firstly, I will say the head wash was wonderful. The young lady who did it did an amazing job and really gave me an amazing wash. Then the dreaded cut. I asked for long layers in the front and back starting at my chin. The guy spent 30 mins to cut my hair and just went crazy cutting in all different directions. He then whipped out the thinning shears and went crazy with that as well. He must have cut about 50 percent of my hair losing all volume. He actually cut the front longer than the back which I asked him to fix and he said that I would lose even more volume. He blow dried it with a curl and zero product and therefore I couldn't really see the unevenness. Then the payment. I was charged 158 dollars for the wash cut and dry. I was totally taken aback and couldn't believe it. I couldn't really argue with the price.... I've gone to much nicer salons for far less. There were no prices on the wall and no website and it seems like the price was made up. I left so upset and feeling completely scammed. They told me I could come back in 7 days to fix it for free... but why would I go back? I find it completely unethical business practice. I'm now using hair growth serums praying it grows out and I can go somewhere else to correct it. read more

Love it here!!! This is my go to place, very easy relaxing no frills salon. I have a lot of thick hair and have been to so many salons, some of which I've paid much more money for than at sphere. previous stylists have *always* complained about how much hair I have, and they would not do a good job (I always go for medium to short length straight cut). Haircuts were usually so stressful for me that I resorted to cutting my own hair for many years due to disappointment by hair salons. I'm very grateful Sphere is right next door and easy to book an appt with. Johnny is very detailed and talented. I tried a long bob with bangs for the first time with him last year and I LOVE it. I've received so many compliments each time I get my haircut. Just got another one today. ‍ Johnny has never complained about my hair volume or seem to be phased by my indecisiveness- usually I come in with an idea or two and then I end up just asking him to go with what he thinks best, and he does a fabulous job. I returned here for a balayage after a previous visit, loving my new haircut. I took some time after my visit to think about what I liked and what I really wasn't happy with... Let's start off by saying my hair condition couldn't be better. I highlight my hair every 1-3 years and tome or gloss in-between months. I enjoy doing balayage because it can grow out and still look great with my natural hair color, giving my hair ample time to recover because I am absolutely religious about NOT having straw hair. I also only wash my hair twice a week to even furtherly avoid damage. My hair is fine and I have plenty of it, it tangles easily enough on its own without me damaging it all the time with bleach. So any discrepancy with the owner saying I had damaged hair is a outright false, I would be able to prove this if need be. Let's get back to the review of my experience: Firstly, I decided I wanted to move my appt a day earlier if at all possible so I could get some other important things done. I called as soon as they opened the day of, hoping that would help. I had to call several times after 11 AM for anyone to answer and when she did she had an attitude and was not very nice to me, which was odd because they always seemed so nice when I was getting hair done... whatever I blew it off and still kept my appointment. I had actually tried initially calling at 10AM because google says that's when they're open, but apparently 11AM on a Thursday is it, because it was about 11:20 when someone answered. Secondly and MOST importantly, for me, transparency is huge with a company-- especially for a service where we receive before we pay. Salons in particular have a widespread history of up-selling, adding fees and overall financially abusing customers who cannot do anything about it once they've received a service. You can google these facts to find out further. Sadly, this all due to simple improper communication/lack of caring on the client end and more about making money. During my visit, I was constantly being up-selled. Constantly. I am not exaggerating. It made me enjoy my service less. This wouldn't be as big of an issue since communication is so important anyway and up-selling isn't a crime... but I left paying 80-100 dollars more than I expected, even though I declined all of the up-sells. The menu say $125 for a half head balayage, which is what I made the appointment for on Yelp. I expected to pay that.. if not a little less because I had already previously gotten a balayage (wasn't sure if I needed a half head considering I had last gotten a full head last June and it was overkill for me.) It was decided by me that I would have a half head, (not without them trying to up-sell me to a full head, of course, in which I declined letting them know that I had a full head previously and it put my hair in really bad condition and I didn't want all of that blonde). After all was said and done and it came time to pay, I was charged $50 extra just to have my hair toned. Overall, not sure where the jump for the $125 for the half head all the way to $200 total (without tip) came from but it most definitely came. Not without me tipping properly first, either (another $20). I wasn't told that this additional 50 bucks just to tone the work they had done was a policy and I was not asked beforehand when they did the service. I would have toned it myself, if I knew that were the case, period. In fact, I went home and a couple days later re-toned it myself anyway. I could of toned my hair on my own 4-5 times for that amount. Would have been nice to have been given that information. Also, they don't style your hair when you pay for a balayage, which is odd because they styled it really nicely when I got a haircut... something to note. Based upon my new Yelp rating system (equaling a total of 5 stars, one for each): Communication: 0-Star (I was charged for something or a couple things I was not told about until after the fact.) Environment: 1-Star (Cute, cozy, minimal salon) Quality/Consistency: 1-Star (They take the time.) Unique-ness: 1-Star (They do great work and are very skilled) Value: 0-Star (Not much for value here. I've been here twice: once for a color correction and just this past weekend, for a single-process. My first time here, I was asking to go from pink to blonde, which is NO easy feat. They not only did just that, but they stayed until almost 2AM to finish the job. We were literally there for SEVEN hours, and somehow, they were able to fix the pink and give me exactly what I wanted. The second time, they took my badly bleached hair super dark (like, pitch black dark) and they did an amazing job. Everyone is super nice, welcoming, and they truly make you feel like you're part of the family, which is more than I can say about many of the salons I've been to (and I've been to my fair share, haha.) First time customer, went in for single process color and simple trim. Color was great, cut is too short with choppy layers. I asked to keep as much length as possible with long layers. Maybe it was my fault for not communicating more clearly. Raced home without the blow dry because all I wanted to do was cry, especially after shelling out $280 (not including tip). When I got to the store front, I was kinda skeptical because the decor made it look like a 1992 hair salon for senior citizens in a Long Island mall. I was scared Well, I had a definite look that I was going for. Choppy. Blunt. Layers. Z and Johnny Z worked with me until we were all on the same page. I am so grateful. This is the best hair cut that I ever had. I am so particular with my hair... and they passed the test with flying colors Omg and Johnny Z's shampoo and head massage was out of this world! They got a loyal client with me It's like america's best kept secret My only recommendation is that the decor be more stylized. I'm thinking--a few cat in outer space with laser posters or Debbie Gibson pictures and like New Kids on the Block. I recently broke my collarbone, which means washing and styling my hair is almost impossible. I went to Sphere to get a blowout and had a fantastic experience. Z washed my hair and seriously, it was the BEST hair massage/wash I've ever had. She really took her time and had me so relaxed I almost fell asleep. It was heaven. Johnny did my blow out and he was meticulous. My hair was bouncy and shiny and held the style for days. Sphere is sleek and intimate, and it was actually quiet (at least when I was there) which was a nice change from salons that play their music so loud that the stylists have to shout. First time at Sphere hair salon and had a full balayage, a custom-mixed base color (was literally a color created by the stylist) and haircut and it came out EXACTLY how i had hoped! Johnny was professional, nice, understanding, and delivered on quality and precision. I have extremely thick hair can sometimes take forever, but I NEVER felt rushed or unattended to. He took time painting pieces by pieces and i knew my hair is one of a kind that is not easy to work with! Johnny and his assistant did an amazing job at making me feel that i was their priority. They ensure that I felt alright from time to time, all kinds of snack and drink was offered! Very attentive and sweet staffs. Can't say enough good things about this place. A very small but clean salon. Sphere is definitely a GEM! I have been a regular for about 18 months and Johnny is the best men's stylist in the area. Johnny is the best! I have had him do my hair for two years now and he has accumulated a bunch of my friends and relatives as clients as well. If you are looking for a change in style, edgy cut, or bob, he is your guy. He always chooses the perfect cut for me - he has the best eye of any of my other stylists in the past. Johnny is also great at doing balayage especially blonde. He was very knowledgable about the process and I didn't go home confused after having my hair done. 5 stars for color. Johnny Z took my growing out, faded hair color and replaced it with a brand new bright color (I'm one of those people oscillating between pink and blue and purple thanks to a flexible job atmosphere). Because the type of color I do requires stripping the base color, and major changes require beyond that, I don't color as often and need it to "grow out" in a way that still works. Not only has my stood up, but the growth works as more "ombre" than "roots". I was waiting to see how things grew out and lasted before writing my review, and I've been pleased. As amazing as the color has been, and the treatment, and the condition of hair, there is one star loss for two reasons: the cut, and the billing. I also got a cut/trim while there. The cut itself looked nice, but the technique seems to have used a razor - on my fine, curly hair. Curly haired women across Brooklyn probably just shuddered. Basically, if I blow dried my hair straight every day, this might have been a plausible idea, but I do not. I came in with my natural texture and specified that I do not straighten my hair regularly but it could be straight with the blow dryer that day because it's usually easier for the stylist. I just think it was the wrong technique for my hair type, and this is why curly haired girls get so particular (and god bless the one B&B stylist many years ago who specifically pulled trainees aside to show them why you don't razor cut my texture of hair and giving me the confidence to know that it isn't intuitive to all stylists). I will probably not get my hair cut here again, but if you don't have "texture" issues all of their cuts look great and they are really meticulous in the styling (again, something that gets negated once the curls pop in). So, while the cut for me hasn't been great (and is probably causing my hair to tangle a lot more than necessary), it isn't necessarily something I would advise against IF you have the kind of hair that plays to their strengths. The salon and everyone who works there is perfectly nice, not a lot of frills but well thought out. Not lots of unnecessary conversation and there was not a lot of upselling (the one thing recommended was actually a kind of treatment that I was looking for because I knew my hair was damaged from all the color). That said, after dual process, and additional treatment, and a cut that assumed my curly hair would be straight, AND their desire to use the color in photos for yelp (it's a good before/after), the idea that blowing dry my hair is an extra fee was a little bit in poor form. I understand style pricing, and for what I do now in terms of hair color it is worth the salon price, but there is a difference between a "Blow Out" and not letting a customer leave the salon with sopping wet hair after 3 different services that required hair washing. Obviously, a "Blow Out" is a separate service and requires a separate cost. But as a salon, the assumption is that a service with a wash should include not letting your customer leave looking like a drowned rat, because that is a reflection on your business. Again, though, it is NYC, and understandable and not a reason to not go for an exceptional color service. It just dips my opinion of how "understandable" it is to have also given me a haircut with a technique incorrect for my hair type, and is something to consider if you are doing lots of services. Again though, the actual client care and salon itself were a delight. It's more just knowing what to expect - and none of this was outside my expectations. I'm including them in the review not because I am seriously unhappy with either issue, but because it is the kind of thing you want to know as a customer. If you came here looking for COLOR, like I did, absolutely no qualms. Highly recommend. If you want all of your hair services for lots of people going to a salon this would also be a great choice. If you have curly hair you may want to be cautious for CUTS, which is important if you are ultimately going to be spending hundreds of dollars in combined services. read more

Johnny Z is brilliant and I was happy to have him cut my hair for the second time last night at Sphere. 5 Stars for Johnny! However, the salon itself gets 1 star for service, cleanliness, ambiance, products and price. I've been to all sorts of hair salons in NYC - from cheap Chinatown salons to edgy rock-n-roll salons to high-end luxury salons. Last night I got a trim (I originally asked for 1-2 inches to be taken off, but Johnny insisted that I didn't have any split ends and didn't need a cut, just a light trim - maybe half an inch). It cost $98 - before tip. That's a lot for a salon like Sphere, which had 1) no receptionist to greet me or take my coat (Johnny was with a client and running a few minutes late, so I helped myself to hanging my coat) 2) cleanliness issues (of two sinks, one sink just had piles of stuff in it, there was no one to sweep hair between clients, I accidentally knocked a ladder over getting my coat because the area is so cluttered) 3) no ambiance (it's a big white box with huge windows to the street, like being in a big bright aquarium) 4) no-name hair products (the hairspray they use is Aqua Net - nothing against Aqua Net, but for these prices I expect Oribe, Christophe Robin, Kerastase, etc. Other products on the shelves and used on clients were all no-name or brands I've never heard of). The shampoo/head massage was one of the best I've had, the trim was great, the blowout was fine. But given my experiences in other salons in the city, this particular trim in this particular salon should not have cost more than $75. The fact I was charged ninety-eight dollars for a trim, finished with a light spray of Aqua Net, is a travesty - but it's not Johnny's fault. I hope he finds a better salon worthy of his talent - if he does, I will follow him there. Until then, good luck Sphere! read more

Such a modern salon and it has a very clean vibe. I initially went for extension removal. Then I was being informed that my extension was being left on for too long, so there might a high possibility that my hair needs to be chopped off. I was very nervous at that moment, however the stylist Johnny went above and beyond and saved my hair with a severe deep cleaning treatment. Afterward, I also had a haircut in which it felt amazing because my hair feel so much lighter and healthier. The receptionist was also very friendly and informative. I'm extremely satisfied with my services at the salon, love and amazed at the fact that Jonny took his time in taking care of my hair and he understood exactly what I wanted. I had a really horrible experience here. I wasn't listened to at all. My hair is very easy to cut. Very manageable hair. And i walked out with my hair destroyed. It used to be really thick. He did something while cutting it which took out all the thickness. I said I needed to be able to pull it back for work - in either a pony tail or braid and he made layers short in a way that I can't do that without a ton of bobby pins. I am so sad. I am going to have to work months to grow this out again in order to find someone new to cut it. I just wanted a trim and to re shape out my long layers and it got hacked. I kept wanting to stand up during my appointment and leave but figured I should trust in the process, that things sometimes look worse before they are done but I was wrong. In addition to that, the towels smelled mildewy, the salon was visually a mess - their drawers were overflowing with brushes and crammed shut. And he kept scratching my neck with his fingers. He was not gentle. I get my hair cut 3 times a year and want it to be a calming relaxing process and this was the opposite. read more
