I am out of state and my dad had purchased a jalapeño chocolate bar that he absolutely LOVED. I wanted to get him some more for Christmas but the website did not have it available. I called the store and asked if they were seasonal and maybe thinking they were just out of stock but the INCREDIBLY kind young lady offered to look for them, not only did she find them, she offered to specially ship them to me! Incredible service, super kind and I had 0 expectation that this was even possible. She really went above and beyond and that kind of service is so rare! Wow! What a find for someone who loves to cook. Shop is well lit and open allowing for you to roam freely between shelves and displays. Staff is knowledgeable and willing to make suggestions on items you may have never considered trying. I heard about this place before venturing up to Prescott, and was so pleasantly surprised when I stumbled upon it walking by the Courthouse, fantastic selection of spices! I love the way they're packaged in little square boxes which makes for easy spice storage, you will find unique things like "Hey Mon" Jamaican spice, and a wonderful salmon rub, as well habanero and lavender sugars! You can buy more everyday spices in bulk like parsley and thyme. What a super cute HUGE inventory place! I was told this store was not to be missed by some clients. It is a short walk across the street from where I was staying, and actually opened before 10 a.m. (thank goodness!) so I decided to check it out. It is HUGE! There's a huge inventory of different sort of teas and spices and condiments and olive oils and dishes and art objects and greeting cards and pieces of clothing and on and on. And I think there is a restaurant in the basement, but I didn't get a chance to check that out. I mean, we need a store like this where I live!! Why isn't it?? I was probably in the store a good hour if not an hour and a half. I bought various spices and dips and an eco friendly sponge, teas, coffee mugs, napkins to the tune of about $150. Yikes! I thought I was just going to check out spices! It was girl gone wild while in the store. I guess I should be thankful there isn't a store like this where I live. I really enjoy browsing here, so many things to look at.. From local items to well recognized brands. Many, many kitchen items and home decor and entertaining artifacts, as well. Worth the browse, always. I enjoy perusing their spices and they also have plenty of bulk loose leaf tea and herbs. If i weren't always stocked up at home with teas, I'd have bought several here. THIS BUSINESS IS "OLD CAPITOL MARKET" From "Winter Spice Sugar" to "Bloody Mary Dip" to "Hibiscus Honey" to "Maple Bacon Aioli"... your taste buds will do a dance of "buy it!" I couldn't wait long to write this review because we were so warmly welcomed into "Old Capitol Market" and invited to sample everything there was to sample and I really wanted to be the first to say "thank you." And also because it's uplifting when you enter a beautiful shop, see old "black and whites" that clearly are of the same space, and can immediately tell that there is an ambition there to honor the past. That said, even in the best restorations - even if you capture the physical characteristics of a shop, if you don't have the human touch - it's still a miss. Here, there was no miss. Monica and her associate (I've blanked on her name and she was the first to greet us so warmly) were so friendly and it really made the difference that made our day. So, we learned that this space used to be segmented into a number of little shops (and if I think hard, I can recall it though I was always one to just sprint next door - "next door" being Prescott Brew and that little set of shops.) This market does draw from some of the shops that are and used to be next door: for example, The Spice Traveler, gourmet items from one of the other shops upstairs, as well as Oils from Olive U Naturally. We found gourmet brands like "Stonewall Kitchen" & "Fischer & Wieser" as well as select items for kitchen convenience (I think I spotted some whisks n things, but when there is beautifully jarred and otherwise lovingly packaged luxury food around, who can get to the wall with the functional items!?) ooh Ooh and there's fresh baked goods in back! A final word on samples... "Caribbean Banana Caramel Finishing Sauce." Decadent! and even more pleasing at zero grams of fat and only 35 calories per TBSP. At $9.95 for 8.5 oz...a very reasonable and wonderfully enjoyable purchase. Wrap it in tissue paper, have a wonderful chat and... that's what a friendly market should be. They are so very, very helpful and knowledgeable and they always just seem to be able to know exactly what you will like. This store is aptly named Spice Traveler - after perusing through their wide array of spices, sauces, jams from all over the world, you feel like you have indeed travelled! Tucked in one side of the store is a bakery where you will find Chef Debbie Snyder herself baking cinnamon rolls and cookies, pastries or toasting mixed granola using some of the olive oil they sell in Spice Traveler. What a neat, and fun shop. Also, across the way they've got their olive oil partner, as well. We'd stopped into PBC for lunch, as there was a slight wait, we meandered through the shops, and came upon this gem. Good selection of spices, etc. The best was the Smoked Green Chile Powder, the aroma was fantastic! Picked up a few containers for myself and as gifts. So glad we did. The Chili Verde I made won the cookoff hands down, and I'd like to recognize the Smoked Green Chile Powder as the culprit! We will be back! read more

I kept my original review of this shop in the paragraph below because this all still holds true. However, I recently had a negative experience here and have removed stars because of it. My husband and I spent about $80 between Spice Traveler and nearby sister shop Olive U on a recent trip to Prescott. We had a good experience in Olive U and were given a punch card that could be used at Spice Traveler or Olive You and a coupon that we could use at Spice Traveler. The coupon was for $3 off any purchase over $15. The punch card gives you $15 off once you accumulate 10 punches. Each punch is for $15 spent. When we got to the checkout the associate told us that if we used the $3 off then she would not give us the punches and vice versa. Of course she had no problem trying to push us to buy some pig salt and pepper shakers. I just think this is a really stingy practice and a turn off. It's not like we were trying to double up on some crazy coupon deal and walk away with a huge steal. That's fine though. She can keep the punches as well as the last $80 we will spend in her store. As I said in the beginning, the merchandise is good for the foodie, but the staff is now a turn off. This shop has a great variety of spices, quick breads, jams, cookware, etc. This is a great place to shop for someone who enjoys preparing meals and being in the kitchen. They sell products that are on par with and including Stonewall Kitchen. They sell some "touristy" AZ type things like cactus printed items and prickly pear jelly, but overall the products sold here will appeal to the foodie. read more

This place is amazing!!!!!! Amazing!!!!! I so wished I lived in Prescott just so I could stop by here regularly for different spices. They had so many different ones to choose from that even a quality chef would struggle to figure out how to use all of them. In addition to spices, they had barbecue sauces, salsas, jams, pastas, etc. etc. etc. My family was so tired of waiting for me they finally left me behind as they continued to other shops. I settled on savory spice for a stew, some steak rub (of course), and Carolina gold sauce for chicken. I will be back. Would next weekend be too soon? read more

My father raved about this store ever since he stumbled upon it and now I know why. I think I bought out half the store in the first 10 minutes. Fresh spices that smell incredible and 100 times more fresh than the spices sold in stores. Rare herbs and spices from across the globe. Infused sugars with flavors like coconut grove (my favorite) and sweet onion. For the holidays, several kinds of hot chocolate mixes were available: dark mahogany, hazelnut, orange peel, peppermint, and more. Chilies from across the desert including Harissa chili spice from North Africa. My father found a Turkish spice he had been looking for for years. The best part about this shop is that there are special sample jars set aside for each spice and customers are encouraged to smell each one to test it's freshness. I felt like an explorer sifting through the menagerie of herbs, teas, chilies, and other spices.This store has singlehandedly turned by father, a bachelor of 16 years into a budding chef. Very cool place! My wife and I stopped in recently to look over their fresh spices and get some ideas for meals. Not only do they have a wide selection of different herbs, spices, chilies, and infused sugars, but they also have quite a few spice blends. Erin, the owner of the shop, had a lot of great recommendations and was very friendly and helpful. We're excited to try the blends we've picked up and looking forward to trying a few of our own in the future. I too order spices from all over the country... I was excited to see a gourmet spice shop come to Prescott. Please support them so they can stay in business, unlike so many of the restaurants and retail stores that seem to be struggling lately. Spice Traveler had 90% of the spices I've been looking for and a lot of interesting custom blends (rubs, flavored salts, flavored sugars, peppery hot stuff too). I asked for an uncommon ethnic spice such as Sumac, which they didn't have. But they did have the more commonly used Za'atar which is a Middle Eastern/Mediterranean spice mix that includes Sumac. I could understand why they wouldn't carry a spice that's not in demand or little known in town: they grind everything in small batches so it stays potent and doesn't sit on the shelf too long. They will consider carrying others if more requests come in. My favorite item is the mushroom powder. No more running out to the store when you're in a pinch for fresh mushrooms or having to wait while you soak and rehydrate dried ones. No chopping! Great for making a pasta sauce with yogurt or cream, or turning into a soup base or coating for chicken or meat. Their "Prescott Spice Rub" blend I love to send as a gift since it has our town's name on it. It's great how all the spices are available in pretty decorative metal tins. Easy, safe, and lightweight to ship. They also have a small selection of teas, empty jars and racks with some cookbooks and cutting boards. When you're done shopping, go around the corner on the same floor of the mall and check out the exotic blends and flavors in the olive oil store (Olive U Naturally). read more

This store is incredible. I have ever seen another like it. My husband is a fan of the super spicy. I mean sign an accidental death waiver, spicy. He lives for it but it is very hard to find some of these extreme or exotic peppers or spice blends but then we stumbled upon Spice Traveler. They have a vast selection of spices that a re freshly ground. They also have some interesting house made blends. To go along with that that offer a huge variety of sauces, salsas and so much more. We normally stop I on a weekend or when we are downtown for an event. You don't want to miss this place. It is one of a kind. read more

I finally made my way here after usually just walking through without looking around on my way to Superstition Meadery downstairs. However, recently we actually stopped to look around. So many varieties of spices, jams/jellies, gifts, utensils, you name it! I love how they had small premade mini tarte shells next to the yummy jams - an impressive dessert or hors d'oeuvre in a pinch! They also have a selection of gifts or interesting items for the kitchen/home. I didn't pick up any spices this time, but I did get a souvenir to take home! My friend had told me about this great shop in Prescott and we come out every once in a while. So we decided to hop in. Let me just start off by saying, this is a beautiful store! With the other businesses in the building, it's very difficult to not find something interesting and entertaining. However, my experience was turned off by the staff. There is one lady that seemed to be the owner or manager of the shop. She had to be in charge since she was barking orders at the other employees. She was also complaining and being rude to an employee who was trying her best to help customers. To be honest, she looked like she was on the brink of crying. It's not like we were alone, she was behaving this way in front of at least 4 or 5 other customers. I was going to buy something, but I couldn't after seeing that. I would also like to add that the other staff members were phenomenal! Some of the best customer service I've seen (besides the angry owner/manager). I do have to give a low rating simply because her tone and demeanor was not appropriate at all and almost abusive. I would just hate to see the business go down because of that person. read more

This is the first ever spice shop I have been to and I was incredibly impressed. There were over 50 different kinds of spices and herbs to choose from. The woman working was very nice and knowledgable. I got turmeric, which I have never bought before and am excited to try because I know how healthy it is, some chocolate chai tea and basil. What a great find! We almost didn't go upstairs at this mall/old building (whatever it is) but I sure am glad we did because we ended up finding a very nice Celtic gray sea salt AND the most amazing campfire flavored salt. The spices are sold in little tins that make great jewelry holders. Okay, that might be kind of weird but I'm into repurposing so I see the little tins every time I open my jewelry drawer. Poor customer service. My husband and I walked in to look for a specific item. We spent some time looking for it and decided we needed assistance. We waited in line at the cashier desk behind 2 customers waiting to pay for their items. There were 2 others in line behind us. When it came time for our turn, we inquired about the item. We were harshly told we needed to step aside as there were only 2 staff members working. She said we would be helped as soon as she took care of the others in line and would even give us a free sample for our patience. We promptly left. Our issue wasn't the wait because it was a lazy Sunday and we weren't in a hurry. We certainly understand being overworked and understaffed. I'm sure they felt overwhelmed, but we were made to feel like our time was less valuable as the others in line. We fairly waited our turn but were unceremoniously dismissed for no other reason than those in line had already chosen their items for purchase. PS...The other staff member was finishing wrapping up another customer's purchase and would momentarily be available. read more
