We've been going here for years. Early on when they were at Army Post and SE 14th as well as the current location. I'm not exactly sure when the current owners took over, but I'm very happy they did. I wasn't sure the food could get much better, but we stopped in today for a late lunch/early dinner and boy we were impressed with the food! We sampled the Samosa Chat, Veggie chili momos, and chicken 65. The 65 was crunchy and had the perfect sauce. We asked for spicy and the momos really delivered (more on that in a bit). The chat is a favorite of ours since we discovered it from the old owners. It's crunchy, and just delicious. For the main courses today, we sampled the chicken tikka masala, butter chicken, aloo gobi, and palak paneer. Of course we also had some garlic and plain naan. All of it surpassed our expectations. In fact, the butter chick may just be the best we've had. For all of it, we asked for "spicy", since we weren't sure what system they used. All of the food had a nice heat, but we could have handled a bit more. I'd like to call out Krishna, our waitress. I wanted a sweet lassi, but she warned me that sometimes the yogurt can get sour, so I asked her to test it and if it was, bring me a mango lassi instead. We all ended up with the mango lassi, which was delicious. That kind of service will get us in the door, the food that came out will keep us coming back. read more

This was surprising. I do not like curry or fall spices at all even though I want to! I enjoyed everything I ate. We had sampler appetizers, chicken plate, some cheese dish, and 2 types of bread. This was from Thursday evening, but I just stopped sweating long enough to write this! I prefer less sweet foods, in general, so Nepalese foods I prefer to Indian foods, tho at face value they may both appear the same to some. TANDOORI CHICKEN WINGS: ordered extra spicy was really just tandoori chicken (not just wings) was. so. damn. SPICYYYY! And oh so good! It's a meal but I saw "wings" so got it as an appetizer to share. CHICKEN CHILI MOMOS: equally as spicy, chicken "potstickers" sautéed with onions, peppers and hot sauce. Yummy, good flavor. Similar in taste to the tandoori sauce but still good. LAMB BIRYANI: was delicious. Spicy but not too spicy, this would've been better as a shrimp biryani but we are glad we tried it. SHRIMP TIKA MASALA: creamy tomato sauce with shrimp and spicyyyyy. Served with rice. Great flavor and a good, solid "go to" Indian restaurant item. CHICKEN PLATTER: ok this one wasn't worth it. It's the platter with small samples of everything but it wasn't worth the $24 price tag and honestly...was just so so. It's meant to be a sampler but it was more sides than actual samples. Not our favorite. Came with a papadum "papads" (super thin lentil cracker). About the only thing we found useful on this platter was the yogurt to help stop the burn, and their biryani was not served with a side of yogurt ("dahi"). We've grown accustomed to the yogurt sauce "raita" at other places being served with biryani, but this came with just dahi (still necessary to stop the burn )! INDIAN ICED TEA: it's an unsweetened iced tea with cinnamon, cardamom and other spices. It was awesome! I could drink this by the gallon (and it came in handy to help stop the burn!). NA'AN's: were great. Next time we'll order some kulcha to try. Their na'an was a little thinner than others we've had, but not bad. Spices was INCREDIBLE!!! All day travel, from CA, and I hadn't eaten since a very early breakfast. On my way to Marshaltown and I've learned that I'd better find food while still in Des Moines, but I didn't want to venture too far off the main drag. Great star rating, and Indian sounds like a brilliant idea so I'm all in. Thought I was lost because Maps sent me through the neighborhood, but BOOM! There it is! Still open too!! Walk in, immediately staff is very nice and gets me sorted. Got some samosa coming, a couple orders of their different naan flavors...and some Chicken Tikka Masala. Got a Coke too, because you HAVE to have a Coke with your Indian. Really brings out all the flavor. Asked for my Tikka extra, extra, extra spicy. She made a face. Says something, like, "Ok, but you might be sorry...". She did it though. Tikka showed up, with rice, and the smell was incredible! Pungent. Savory. Complex. Yum!!! Only, not quite hot enough.... I asked, "Do you happen to have some back-house magic you can bring?" Well, she REALLY made a face then! Says, "Hold on. I got you." Returns with a ramakin of fresh cut chilis that look absolutely evil. OMG. EXACTLY what the doctor ordered. Chef even came out to see the crazy man and give him the backstory on the chilis. SO cool! It was so good I couldn't put it down. Regret leaving two pieces of naan behind, but I was already as big as a house and couldn't even eat breakfast this morning! My favorite dining companion and I are always looking for new places to eat, and Indian/Nepalese is one of our favorite types of food. The menu for Spices of Nepal looked good, and their prices were very reasonable. I decided on the Chicken Bhuna (I requested 4/5 spicy in the comments, because I like my Indian food HOT) and a side of Garlic Naan. My dining companion ordered the Mushroom Mutter (Spice 3/5) and an order of Vegetable Samosas. Our food arrived in a reasonable amount of time. It looked just like the pictures, which is always reassuring, and partially why I didn't take any pictures...that and the fact that I was starving! The Chicken Bhuna was delightful. It was herbaceous, very spicy, and absolutely delicious. The chicken was very tender and flavorful. It was wonderful. The Garlic Naan was nice and tasty, although I wouldn't mind a slightly thicker Naan. Still delicious though, no points taken away. The Mushroom Mutter was great too. My dining companion really enjoyed it. She said the Samosas were the highlight of the meal. They had a nice mildly crunchy exterior and a soft yummy filling. All around we had no complaints. I've tried all the Indian restaurants in town and this is hands down the best. They put "spices" in the title of the restaurant and the name is apt. And I don't mean the food is spicy (unless you want it to be), I just mean the food is flavorful because they use a lot of spices in their cooking. Just how Indian food should be. I'm honestly surprised the restaurant isn't more popular. I guess it is the location. But it is worth the drive wherever you live. read more

My wife and I went to Spices of Nepal for a post-Valentines evening. This was our second visit. While it appears that most of their business is carry out, it's worth eating in to have the food straight from the kitchen. The extensive menu covers a variety of dishes, both vegetarian and non. We shared appetizers of Aloo Tikki (fried mashed potatoes with onion and spices) and Onion Bhaji (fresh onion nests fried in chickpea flour). Main courses were Chicken Biryani and Lamb Bhirra. Both were excellent, flavorful, and we'll-spiced. The food rivals and even excels anything you can find along Devon Street in Chicago. If you like great food from the Indian subcontinent, this place is a must! read more

Alright, I want to start by saying that the food here is beyond delicious. The taste is so great. They do great with the flavor and spice. I used to think Kathmandu was my fav spot but nope. Spices takes it. I will say however that when I actually dined in there for the first time they over charged me a decent amount. When I order to go I have no issues tho. The place is cute where the Chinese buffet used to be. However I can say that unlike the Chinese buffet this place smacks (the buffet did have a really nice lady and good sugar buns tho). After such a hectic ride from Dallas TX, me and my friend were tired and hungry. So, we decided to go to Spices of Nepal (Indian Restaurant & Grocery) to try their food. Being a Nepali I know how hard it is to be working in a foreign country away from our loved one's thinking that we drove there to at least taste the food from our country Nepal, but this place is not even worth it. If it were up to me, I would shut the whole thing and fire all the employees. I would personally give "NEGATIVE" 5 star which is me being fair. The employees are rude and if you ask for some extra rice and mutton curry, an employee said, "We don't have the curry left and would have to order the whole thing again" which is just ridiculous. And don't even think of it being cheap. One Goat Thali costs $26.99, for that price the rice must be gold plated. I feel they are misguiding the customers and have to be shut down. To even think of being at the place gives me the creeps. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND NOT TO VISIT THIS PLACE. IF YOU ARE HUNGRY AND ARE IN "DES MOINE" JUST DRINK SOME WATER AND DRIVE ALONG.
