A good spot. They have tons of options (almost overwhelming) to choose from: sushi, hibachi, yakisoba, soups, fried rice, Korean tacos, and more. We came today for the first time in a while and noticed they refreshed their menu and their dining room. It look nice! My wife and I got their chicken yakisoba and shrimp tempura tacos and both were excellent. We would definitely order them again. The wait staff is friendly and the place is kept clean. The only drawback to me is the prices are a little higher for some of the choices, so I just avoid those. To be honest, I'm leaving a review only because I was shocked to see negative ones. I LOVE Spider Sushi (specifically their surf & turf roll). I typically get my food to go and it's always delicious. The times I have dined in I feel like the service is typical, like what you'd get anywhere else. They're usually really busy while only having around 2 servers, so I feel like the reviews complaining about service are likely a little inconsiderate of things such as that; because being low staffed is not employees fault. Plus, the employees are always very kind. I like Spider Sushi and personally have never tried a better surf & turf roll! Loved this place. I was craving sushi one day and decided to try their Hawaiian roll. My wife is vegetarian so I asked if we could omit the fish in the roll and the lady was very nice and said we could substitute. Really loved that. I've eaten here a couple of times. They have been pretty consistent. The rolls are as good/bad as the individuals taste's. I had the Samurai Roll which I liked a lot. My wife had the Matrix roll... which neither one of us liked. We shared an Ebi Cream Cheese roll as well as a Spicy Spider Roll. We thought they where pretty good, if not different from what we are normally use to ordering. I know there are some sushi purists out there that will yell up and down that this isn't real sushi and that sushi in the Midwest sucks. Well, okay. I like this place, they have non traditional rolls though they do have more traditional rolls to choose from. I had deep fried sushi here for the first time(surf and turf roll) and it tasted great. It did not contain cuts of fish so I did not feel guilty for trying something new, it was dipped in tempura and fried and had a bit of a kick to it We have had many of their rolls and bento boxes and everything tasted good. The staff has always been pleasant and accommodating even when they are busy. If you are offended by non traditional sushi this is probably not the place for you read more

Their Venom roll is absolutely delicious and their appetizers are too, especially the sea horse. The yakisoba noodles are yummy, too. The Iron Man roll is also good! A lot of great options, you can't go wrong. If you're ordering for pickup/takeout, be weary that their customer service isn't always great. Being a Rockford native, Spider Sushi was always my go-to for sushi cravings. JMK and Shogun are great for their sushis, don't get me wrong, but Spider sushi to me is more comforting. This place used to be my go to sushi spot when I lived in Rockford 4 years ago! I'd be there 2-3 times a month! Since then, either the quality of ingredients has changed or my taste buds have. I tried the Tweety, the Yammi Yammi, and the Volcano rolls. The rice was just slightly overcooked, the tuna had a strange texture to it, and the tobiko (which should just be a garnish) was too much and taking over the whole roll! The service was average. Tried Spider for the first time tonight with a friend. It was delicious!! Tried the house salad because I thought the dressing would be like the ginger dressings that you get at a place like Nippons, which I love. It tasted like that dressing but like they added Orange flavor which made it really sweet. It was the only thing I didn't love. The fried rice was AMAZINGLY delicious with great flavor and texture. We also shared the surf and turf roll and the shrimp tempura roll. I have never really had anything that is much different than a California roll and I loved these two. I've tried several places for sushi around town including Spider a few times. This place is a hit or miss. The only nice thing is that it's conveniently close to home for me aside from Marc's Fusion, JMK, and Shogun. The only time I would go here is if I am craving sushi and don't want to go across town. Otherwise, this wouldn't be my first go to place. I feel the price for the portions are not worth it and the flavors are not consistent. Unless they have happy hour or lower their prices somehow, I'd probably just stop eating sushi here overall. We have been coming here for 5 years and my reviews are mixed. While sushi has never been my go-to and knowledge limited, this place has some phenomenal food! Normally I choose a steak and seafood noodle dish and the wife will get a few rolls of sushi. Each roll has a different name and many are name after superheroes and do in fact seems to resemble them in color usually. Not all are to my liking but that is just my taste. I love the Aquaman roll almost as a dessert. You can see every ingredient they use and never had any issues with quality or freshness. I have been to a few other local places but prefer this place entirely on the quality of food alone. All that said, I find the layout rather odd and the seating arrangements to be a bit awkward. I have found great pleasure in eating the sushi from Spider. ingredients are always super fresh and the variety in the menu is always nice, even though I tend to get the same four things. if I could change a few things they'd be somewhat simple, I'd like to think anyway. I recently had their dinner for two (steak, chicken, shrimp, rice, soup and salad) and I wasn't completely satisfied. the meal itself was far too salty, with no variation in flavor between the proteins. I was let down but I now know that Spider calls itself a sushi bar for a reason. I came in on a slow weeknight and ordered 3 rolls to go. It was early and there were about two other tables. They told me it would take 15 minutes... I walked back to my car to wait, and waited and waited and waited. I sat there over 40 minutes while other people came and went with there to go orders. I have worked in food service and I almost never complain. This was Horribly slow service and no accountability for it. No apologies. They simply said "we got busy". At the last minute one of the cooks offered a free roll which was a nice last ditch effort to make me happy, but unfortunately it didn't really solve the problem of them forgetting my order. It wasn't horrible tasting, just below average. After hearing good things, I was very disappointed. In addition to the food sadness, we also had major service sadness going on. Upon receiving our scallop appetizer, I pointed out to our server that we had no utensils of any kind. We then watched as she went and attended to various tasks (they were not busy), and then eventually wandered back our way. But to our dismay, she wasn't coming to bring us our chopsticks-- she went to the table next to us and began taking their order! Since our scallops were getting cold, I went up to the bar and got some utensils from the empty seats there. Now, I should add, I have worked many years in the service industry so I have high expectations but am also forgiving of minor mishaps. Throw some rice vinegar in it PLEASE! When I am throwing the money down from sushi, the size of the fish should be decent. For how much I ordered, I could of got twice the amount of fish in Chicago. At first glance, this is a fast food joint operated by hispanics. After eating the sushi, this is not "authentic" by any means. We ordered gyzo, the dipping sauce was separated. It was a layer of soy sauce, layer of sesame oil, and water. Gross! The Thor roll and Samuri roll tasted exactly the same. The fried rice tasted more like mexican food than Asian. Even adding soy sauce to fx the flavor didnt help. We eat sushi often. If you do, I wouldnt come here. Its not good and too expense!! We surprised this small restaurant by bringing 14 people by on a Saturday night without reservations. The servers were excellent, attentive, and social - but more importantly, they kept up - never leaving us hanging. The kitchen delivered by constantly bringing our food out in a timely manner, first the apps, then a steady stream of sushi all night long. We loved the food, and found the prices very reasonable. I came in for a quick glass of wine and appetizer, the scallops. There was certainly a good deal on the house wines ($4) but my scallops were a disappointment. They were extremely salty, and I had to ask for some lemon to cut the saltiness. They were also pressed instead of allowed to cooked evenly on both sides and were quite oily. In this sense, they were treated more like a bife than scallops. I will give Spider Sushi another try but certainly ask that some of the dishes have less salt/soy sauce. read more
