A real five-star review just for being reasonably priced in Southport. Forget the other extremely overpriced and overrated ice cream shops in town. This place is legit especially if you grew up loving soft serve. It's the only way to g in our opinion. Hot dogs are quite good as well. A solid Ice Cream spot. It wasn't busy when we stopped by. There is no inside seating just a few benches and tables with umbrellas outside, but the heat still comes through. You need to eat your Ice Cream a bit faster than normal, as it melts fast. I was actually surprised it wasn't a lot busier on a scorching Hot NC summer day! From what I could tell the place was run by kids...very young looking...maybe still in High School. No matter...as they were fast and efficient. The portions are generous and the Ice Cream is tasty; didn't taste artificial or too sweet. No complaints... Ice Cream: ~ CHOCOLATE PEANUT BUTTER (Top) - 5/5 A solid well balanced Chocolate Peanut Butter Ice Cream. At first I was a little put off by the prices for a single scoop of ice cream (almost $4). But then when my cone came it was significantly more than one scoop! The ice cream quality was fantastic. Got some home made Cookies and Cream while my husband got the Cookie Monster. Both were delicious and the perfect thing after walking around town on a hot day. There's a quiet little seating area to the side of the building with tables and umbrellas. If we're ever in town again we will definitely be back. Staff was VERY friendly. read more

One of few places that are still open past 8PM in southport area! Great place for ice cream and hanging out! I got a cone with cookie and cream and chocolate chip cookie dough and a cup of their blackberry and peach pie ice cream (forgot to take a picture of it because it was so freaking good and I was too excited!). The C&C and Cookie dough were great nothing very special about them but the blackberry and peach pie was amazing. It was a very light and super creamy mixture of slightly sour blackberries and chunks of sweet and fresh peach pie. I would definitely go back to try all their other flavors! There were a couple of picnic tables outside and a set of rockers. We went in the evening after sunset and the place was pretty packed with families standing around with their yummy ice cream. They're right on the main road & close enough that you can walk to the waterfront while enjoying your ice cream treat. They do offer seating & tables, in case you want to stay there & eat. But they don't just serve ice cream! In the mood for a hot dog? They've got you covered. They also offer milkshakes & sundaes. I went with a regular cotton candy flavored ice cream, served in a regular cone. It was sooo good! However; it was so hot that evening, that the ice cream was melting faster that I could eat it. The staff is really nice. The only issue I have is with the prices. My regular cone was $3.19. And that was basically for one, maybe one & a half scoops of soft serve. read more

When I asked, the teenage boys seemed to wish they had better things to do and we got the pineapples without a "you're welcome" to my "thank you". Im not sure how any one could possibly like this place. We bought 3 different flavored shakes made w hard ice cream and they were all horribly bland. $20 after tip and we threw them all in the trash. I had chocolate overload and mint; the shake looked dark red in color, had zero chocolate taste and faintest hint of mint. Had no other flavor. My wife got coffee mud pie; the flavor was completely indiscernible and certainly zero coffee flavor. My kid had twisted turtle; i dont know what the hell this thing was supposed to taste like but it tasted fruity and like fake almond flavoring at the same time. They have the soft-serve thing where you can order a bunch of flavors and they infuse vanilla with the flavor - black cherry for example - my favorite... mmmm. I went for it (the soft serve that is) even though it was about 95 degrees out. Soft serve at that temperature is a bold move I know, but I'm livin' on the edge these days. We were craving ice cream after an afternoon on the beach with the dogs so we stopped by Spike's on our way back to the beach house. I got chocolate & vanilla swirl & Tim got some orange concoction & of course we got a pup cup for the dogs to split. The ice cream is great it just melts super fast. my hand was covered in melted ice cream almost immediately, it wasn't that hot out (low 80s) & we were under shade. Glad I had a bathing suit on & not something nice on because I was definitely wearing some of the ice cream just from it melting. Not sure if they didn't have their machines at a cool enough temperature or what, but I ended up thowing the cone away halfway through because it was making too much mess & the napkin was stuck all over the cone. The pup cup is great, it's a small cup of vanilla with a gigantic dog cookie stuck in it. Sully, our English springer spaniel thought it was the coolest thing ever, he was enjoying me using the big dog cookie as a spoon for him. read more

What a gem! Within walking distance to the town park, restaurants, museums , and about 2 blocks from the waterfront and pier. For $3.00/ each we got two cones of double scoop locally churned ice cream, and for $2.00 our toddler got a single scoop of soft serve. They have lots of choices and give samples. We got mint choc chip, choc chip cookie dough, almond joy, and vanilla. All tasted great, but the atmosphere made them taste even better ! Went here yesterday. One of my people ordered while I took the baby to walk around the picnic Tables. Well my guest said give me one second so he could give me the baby's ice cream she rolled her eyes and said fine. I understand it's hot outside and you have been working all day (coming from a person in retail and food industry) but if your going to roll your eyes make sure you hide it a little better. Been going to Spike's Dairy Bar for 6 years now and my kids and I don't miss a stop every time we swing through the beautiful, quaint town of Southport! The ice cream is the best soft ice cream we have all ever tasted! I end up just getting a small vanilla cone to taste the creaminess on its own and the kids get a root beer float or cookie dough milk shake. Hubby gets a mocha or cappuccino milkshake.
