Well, I am sad to make such a review. This once-terrific restaurant, which I have been patronizing along with my family for over 40 years, has fallen into some poor hands. Glen and Diane sold the restaurant- and knowing them personally, I totally understand why- but the new owners have turned a reliable and homey place into a poorly-run attempt at a hip joint in a very quiet little beach hamlet. Today some family and I made a dinner reservation. We were sat almost immediately upon arriving, but our waiter was pulling double duty as barkeep, and he did neither job well. My Mom had to go up to the hostess to get place settings, to the bar to get our refills, to another server to check on the status of our order (which had been given to our wait 45mins earlier), and back to the bar to get our check. Our waiter never once checked on us; we didn't see him after he took our order until it was time to pay up. When we voiced our concerns, he was not thrilled to hear that he had done a poor job, and sent Chris, the manager (and possibly owner? Not sure) over to us. Chris did listen attentively and thanked us for our feedback, which is the only reason this review has as many stars as it does. The restaurant had a rather limited menu, and they were out of a lot of stuff. I ordered the fried scallop basket with sweet potato fries. $30 for half a dozen small, overcooked scallops and mushy fries? Not worth it. Their prices are sky high for the region and for the quality and quantity of food served. I know, I know- this sounds awfully like I am clutching my pearls and telling naughty children to get off my lawn. But over the decades of patronage of Spinney's- both the restaurant and the guest house- I had never had a disappointing experience before the new owners got their claws in this beautiful place. read more

When we complained about the food, the manager came and gave us new orders not over done but still the flavor was not there. We had fried clams and fried scallops. The view was very nice. I came here because this restaurant was used in the movie "Message in a Bottle" The restaurant is the same and looks the same just being upgraded. They have a full bar and the service is great! I ordered the clam chowdah and it was really good. The Lobstah roll was good but a bit over priced for the ROI. There is more bread than lobstah but they do use big chunks. I sat at the bar and Tatum was a great server and very personable. The restaurant is clean and runs smoothly. They have limited parking but you can park at the end of the road at the fort. I only gave them a 4 star because of the price but when you are the only restaurant near by, you can charge whatever you want. read more

What could improve? Maybe make the prices worth the quality! The ONLY good thing about a visit to Spinney's was the waitstaff! The food was awful! The lobster bisque, purported to have chunks of lobster had NONE and the bisque itself was mediocre to say the least. Party of three ordered lobster rolls - two with butter, one with mayo. I have NEVER been served a lobster roll made up entirely of mushy, tasteless CLAWS!! Perhaps I am this critical because I live in Boston, however, If a restaurant anywhere in the North End (Neptune's), along the harbor (The Sail Loft), just over the bridge in Winthrop (Belle Isle) or Woodman's in Essex, served these as a $37.00 lobster roll, someone would have thrown it in the direction of the kitchen! Beautiful patio and indoor seating areas along with a cute shop make this place a go-to if you are visiting Popham beach or the fort. Food was great. We had the Po Boy Gone Fishing and the fried scallops basket. Both were great, with the scallops very tender and tasty and the Po Boy breading and bread outstanding. Update for 2024. The restaurant is completely different this year. It is probably under new management, but for whatever reason it has a much more mundane and limited menu; the new menu would be perfect for a lunch place in a coastal town. My wife doesn't really eat seafood, and the only thing she found to eat here today was a chicken sandwich. I had the clam basket, which was awesome, and the lobster bisque, which was adequate. Since it's the only restaurant within 10 miles, I know I'll be going here again, but it is not exciting this year. The building was badly damaged in the fierce storms of January 2024, so they probably put all of their time and attention into repairs and restoration. We shall see what next year brings. read more

I love Spinney's. I've been coming to this spot since I was about 8. Would have been earlier except I lived on the west coast most of my formative years. I have about 6 or 7 generations of family history in Bath. Spinney's is restful, a beautiful place to relax and view the grand Kennebec Rivers entrance to the magnificent Atlantic Ocean. It has gone through a few owners during my experience. The current and relatively new owners (2021?) are doing well. They modernized the bar area (see picture). I kind of liked the old one, but it's pretty. The food this summer was great during my first visit. My second visit, I had issue with my lobster roll. It was remedied with quickly, the new owner came out s d spoke with us. I was very satisfied with their response. The first visit of the summer we had a party of 13. We were accommodated professionally and on short notice. We had excellent food and service. I had a lobster roll during this visit and it was delicious and plentiful! Everyone went away filled, pleased and relaxed. My second visit was with a sister, we had a lovely and equivalent experience, sans the lobster roll. We are from Maine and over 25 years or so have brought visiting friends and family here for the quintessential casual , lobster or fish and chips experience. It's an old building and well used. But Mainers and tourists don't mind. The waitstaff are trying their best , Foe example, (we had appetizers served to us with no plates or silverware and we didn't get any utensils until the main course came out) they desperately need to be trained how to wait tables. The food was , and I don't say this lightly, HORRIBLE!! We ordered Haddock, a staple at an ocean side restaurant in Maine. Always a safe choice , it must be fresh , right ? and they go through a lot of it ? It was with out a doubt old previously frozen dried out to the point of nearly petrified. The moisture was completely gone. It was like Haddock jerky . For the prices they charged , over $90.00 for 2 fish and chips to get something worse than those "fish " sticks they used to serve at school is beyond disappointing. We understand the price of everything is skyrocketing, so do yourself a favor and, don't waste your money . It is with a sad heart that I say we will never go back . It's the end of an era . We were torn trying to decide where to eat for lunch. Tried Spinneys after change of ownership. Happy to say all three of our meals were great! Julian was an excellent server, guiding us through the menu. Top of the list was the Lobster BLT-- "Best BLT I've ever had!" Next best was the Seared Ahi Tuna sandwich. The combination of tuna topped with the seaweed salad was delicious. Finally-- Fish and Chips. A nice version of a classic. The pieces of haddock were thick and tender with a crunchy coating almost like fried chicken. All three meals came with fries which we all enjoyed-- so crispy, maybe double-fried? We love Spinney's and go often to support the local business through out the whole season. 5 stars and I won't let tonight's experience weigh in on the we'll deserved score. Chris has done so many amazing things! it's nice to see. Service was different this evening and hopefully a fluke. While finishing up our meal and thinking about another round and dessert, the server placed our check on the table and walked away without any communication about it. A little odd but didn't think anything of it, really. Two minutes later another employee came and asked if we could move to a different spot for another party coming in wanting our table. We felt rushed and we were ultimately pushed out. We were only there for less than 40 minutes and there were other newly sat tables around us. We will of course return and have family staying there later in the summer, but hopefully next time we can enjoy ourselves without the rush and poor attitude....oh and the bigger bill we would have happily paid, too. read more

Just love this place while you're in the area. It's on the water next to a historic site. Great views, the inside is very cool with the blue bar lights, the exposed rafters, and the live lobster tanks. While I was eyeing up the tanks the owner came over explained to me about the anatomy of a lobster and how they operate. She and Gavin, our server, are super nice. I doubled down on the lobster. Ordered the lobster bisque which had tons of lobster meat chunks floating on the top. The lobster roll had a ton of meat inside of the bun. The lobster roll (connecticut style) had a good amount of tender meat on a well toasted bun and the fries it came with were crispy and well seasoned. Wife and I stopped in for lunch after spending the morning at Popham Beach. What an absolutely beautiful spot with amazing views of Fort Popham and the mouth of the mighty Kennebec river. Had a wonderful outside dining area with nice sea breeze. They have their own personal beach where you can swim, fish or watch the seals frolicking around the shoreline. The waitstaff as super friendly and attentive. I had the chicken sandwich and my wife had the steamers with onion rings. Both were reasonably priced as were the beers. This place is for sale and sadly it shows. We decided to stop in after visiting Fort Popham. We went in the take out door and waited in line behind another lady. The place was empty and there were waitresses walking around and an older man who would come behind the counter, but no one ever acknowledged us. We were there fifteen minutes until we decided to leave. The lady walked out with us, but when we went back in to use the restroom I saw her back at the counter trying to get someone's attention and was ignored. Had the pleasure of dining and ordering takeout at Spinney's last week, during a stay at Popham. We had happened upon it last year, after a marathon beach walk, and this year, rented nearby. We learned that it's under new ownership, and hoped for a similar positive experience as the previous year. The "Po' Boy Gone Fishin'" haddock sandwich was one of the best I've ever had. A slab of lightly battered and fried haddock perfectly accompanied by coleslaw, spicy mayo, red onions, lettuce, and tomato on a roll. The fries were done just right, and coarsely salted. The lobster bisque was amazing, chock full of huge chunks; the buttery cream base was just right. Our server, Savannah, was lovely, attentive and extremely personable. If I lived here, I'd likely be a regular at the small, but intimate bar. The folks seated there seemed to be having a superb time. The pizza was adequate, but not their strong suit. It's a seacoast town, so they play to their strengths. Loved the area, the beaches, the people...unpretentious, and just good folk. Definitely continuing to go back. Can't beat the scenery here, right on the water. Sat on the deck on a beautiful September evening. Place was practically empty but it's not hard to imagine this place being packed in the height of summer. I ordered the clam basket which came out out incredibly fast and was super fresh. They probably weren't the best clams I've ever had but they were very good. Fries were on point as well. My wife ordered the fried haddock sandwich and was equally satisfied. Spinney's is under new owners as of summer 2022 and it is SO MUCH BETTER. Seriously. Local Maine beers on tap. Fresh local produce and fish. Decent cocktail list. Attentive and kind staff. Amazing. Apparently the new owners also own Contented Sole over in Pemaquid which gets great reviews. We live right down the road and Spinneys has always been a place of last resort for us-- somewhere to take visitors with an amazing view all the while knowing that the rest wouldn't be great. And with a few other places in Phippsburg that fit that bill (the view part), Spinneys was always way bottom of our list. Oh how the times have changed. We had the fisherman's platter and the clam chowder. Both were bomb. And the fries were perfect. They had multiple specials in addition to the menu (like a grilled rare tuna steak sandwich that looked awesome as did the fish tacos that our neighbors had and a salad with local ingredients.) The menu also had options for vegetarians, vegans, and gluten free... all of which are sometimes hard to find in the area. We waited for over an hour after ordering and food still hadn't arrived. Very little food came out of the kitchen in that hour. No manager talking to people explaining delays.
