When I came into his room he was just sitting and looking straight ahead at a wall some few feet in front of his face. I sat in the chair placed next to his desk, and sat, and then just sat - without him saying anything, or acknowledging my presence at all, but just continuing to silently stare ahead at the wall. After a period of time that had become embarrassing, he suddenly said - "You need to train the brain" : 'Does he display a few issues of his own ? - or Wot ?'

Patients are currently being asked if they mind being switched to other surgeries or would prefer a new GP be recruited to take on the practice. I really hope the latter is the case. Although the facilities are admittedly squashed, I have always found the practice to be well run and the staff friendly and discreet. Appointments are given promptly and each morning's open surgery is extremely well-run. And the practice nurse is extremely friendly. I found Dr Thompson a supportive and efficient GP when she was there and most of the GPs standing in have been good. The practice also arranges for prescriptions to be sent to certain local pharmacies to be picked up, and they always respond to answer phone messages promptly.

The surgery is one of two in the area, and although the practice looks a little run down (check the photo to see what I mean), this isn't reflective of the level of healthcare that you can expect here. This is a good surgery! A lot of the patients are drawn from the foreign student population in the area, but it is also popular with UK students as well. I'm unsure whether they offer any special facilities for students (like some of the other surgeries do in the neighbouring areas of Roath and Heath), but I guess that all of their patients needs are met regardless.

The doctors appear knowledgeable, friendly and I've never felt like I am wasting their time. They take me seriously and I feel they are listening to me. When I need an appointment they generally have one when I need, I have the option to go to either the Yatton or Congresbury which I think is great, it gives me more options for time of appointment. If I want to see a certain doctor they always try to accommodate and if I need one urgently I have never been turned away. Both nurses and doctors are helpful, good with children and if you are looking to move to the area the surgery shouldn't be a concern. If the appointments are running late they put a note out so when you arrive you realise there is a wait and give you the option to reschedule your appointment (after all it's a public service not a for profit, customer service orientated organisation like a supermarket). The only downside is the parking, the car park is tiny and on-street parking can be restrictive meaning you have a short walk to the building. Not to bad for me normally but if you're elderly or very ill it may cause you problems.

Every occasion I have had cause to visit I have always been pleasantly impressed with how friendly the staff are, receptionists, nurse and doctors (Dr Short is fantastically personable). Service is king even in this environment. Can always get an appointment and rarely have to wait long once there. The waiting room is clean and pleasant in any event.

Mother and Baby offers vaccinations for all children up to age 5 and a well-baby clinic. The baby-weighing drop-in session is 10.15-11am on Thursday mornings. The NHS does not pay for some of the services they provide. These include private sick notes, insurance forms, holiday cancellation forms, medical reports, fitness to travel certificates, private prescriptions, passport signing and some vaccination services. Ask at reception for advice on the practice fees for these services, which are in line with British Medical Association approved national guidelines.

Oh Lord, the waiting you'll do here. I know it's par for the course normally, but even with an appointment, you can anticipate a 30-45 minute wait time. Bring a good book is all I can say. Situated in the heart of Bute Street, the Butetown Health Centre is a bit on the grim side, and really in need of a refurbishment, if not for the patients, then for the high-quality doctors and nurses who grace its doors. The centre houses a few GPs, but I can only comment on the treatment I've been given by the Dr. Sauders' surgery. The receptionists are always very pleasant and helpful, but the poor doctors and nurses are normally rushed off her feet (I guess like any other doctor practice - seems a universal thing!). But the most important thing is that they always listen to what I have to say, and never dismiss me with a wave of the hand and a "Oh, just take some paracetamol." So hence the three star rating - the staff are knowledgeable and friendly, but the place is in dire need of a makeover.

All staff, and I include ALL, work their socks off, it's a very demanding and diverse area and, without fail, I have always witnessed kindness, consideration, professionalism and courtesy at all junctures. In my humble opinion, it's (like everywhere on NHS) short staffed, underfunded and over subscribed. Having moved around South Wales, I can safely say this is the best practice I've had - by a country mile.
