Sometimes you just gotta see for yourself!! I flew from Oakland to Orange County today to come visit my dad for his bday. When I read these reviews I was horrified and worried I'd be charged for something random, or the airline/ airplane itself would be in horrible condition, my biggest fear was paying extra for no middle seat and coming to only see someone sitting in the middle seat. Needless to say I'd had quite the opposite experience!!! I came in at 9 on Sunday with no life at the desk, walked up to Jasmine who was nice enough to let me know my bag was ok as a carry on. I made it through security with no line at all and to the gate just in time to have a beer and a burrito. The plane and employees on it where just like any other for any other airline I've been on, I didn't have one bad experience. My seat was clean ( window seat) and no one was in the middle seat!!! For the price and experience I'll take this anytime!!! I'm definitely coming back again. I have heard bad things about this airline however I decided to see it for myself. It exceeded all of my low expectations It was only a 1 hour flight. I cannot imagine the hellish existence of staying on this for a long haul. If you must fly with them I advise 100% carrying on your bag and keeping it supervised. Also just travel light. They have managed to make American Airlines feel like a luxury private jet in comparison. Spirit Airlines is on another level of disorganized. Their method of 1 "personal item" not being a standard carry on is straight robbery. The person at the check in kiosk was extremely rude and condescending when I asked if my bag qualified as a personal item or a carry on, There was a free for all method of storing bags in compartments not above your seat. This leaves me to no wonder about other reviews of bags being lost or stolen. I heard flight attendants talking trash on customers who had complained earlier saying "There are other airlines they don't have to fly here." "Customers these days are rude and don't deserve good service." Even "The worst thing about this job is the people." I work in the service industry and am well aware of some customers being hell on earth but you'll never catch me saying these things right in front of other customers. I saw no point in complaining as looking at all these past reviews and the attitude of the staff customer service is low on this airline's priority, I have never sat on an airplane seat that felt more uncomfortable the seat itself is hard as a rock. It is far more worth it to use any other airline and the seats were the worst I have ever experienced. I absolutely do not advise letting any elderly relative fly spirit. If you are in a relationship and she does not think she has made a serious mistake being with you after you chose to fly spirit with her she is a keeper. I have rode on busses filled with homeless people on LA's public transportation and found that a better experience than spirit. My boyfriend recently booked a flight through Priceline which took him through Spirit and gave him a flight to Los Angeles from 3:30 pm, a connecting flight then ending up in Orange County at 9:30 pm. I could have gotten a straight through flight through Southwest and gotten us there in an hour and half at most. What can I say..,you get what you pay for. Found an amazing cheap 8am flight to New Orleans with a short layover for $90. When we boarded the flight, the attendants announced that they didn't know where the pilot was, and that they would let us know when they found out. 20 minutes later, another flight landed and they said that the pilot was probably on that flight. The pilot then legally had to take a rest in between flights so we waited a bit longer. When the flight was finally taking off, they hit the brakes and announced that there was now a maintenance issue. So we all got off the flight. At this point we realized we were definitely going to miss our connecting flight. The desk agents were super overwhelmed and understaffed and there was a long line of people complaining. They ended up putting on another flight the next day at 6am that had an 11 hour layover. That flight was also delayed by 2 hours. As a result, we ended up losing out on two days of our vacation. We tried reaching out to customer service and they hung up on us. I then reached out on Twitter and got a response...they ended up refunding our bags and gave us $150 worth of unrestricted vouchers. Based on the amount of time we lost on our trip and job opportunity lost as a result (we were supposed to house sit some dogs), the vouchers didn't really make things square but it was better than nothing. The Twitter customer service rep was more helpful but I'm still pissed about the whole experience. read more

When you thought you started your vacay and holiday trip and had some hope. At first, I thought I was the only one that got sent to see an agent when checking in 24 hours prior to my flight. Low and behold, fast forward to departure being today. I was not the only one. You would think the airline would be smarter and more efficient by doing the checkin online and add your bags, but no, not with Spirit. While on the other hand, other airlines allow you to checkin, pick your seat (at the low cost instead of having to pay $50 plus for an aisle or window seat or one with more leg room). The problem does not stop there. So as I was waiting for my flight to depart, flight was supposed to preboard at 5:20 and leave by 6:05. There was no warning at all to even let us know that they were short staffed. All I saw was a guy who simply was running around like a chicken with a broken neck. So the flight was delayed by 45 minutes. Hoping that everything would change upon arriving at the airport, even waited another half hour to find out that half of the flights luggage did not make it to the airport. After talking to one of the agents, in which they ensured us that our luggage's would arrive on the next flight. So a few of us waited literally another hour as that flight too was also delayed. Crossing fingers and hoping that my luggage would be on this flight, still nothing and was then told that it would arrive on the 5:30 flight. So I decided to file a claim and was also promised they would contact us as soon as the flight came in, and still NOTHING. What also upsets not only me is, it's the holidays and I get it. But to lose not just my luggage, but at least half of every flight, THATS the problem. They also did not even offer to give us a voucher to compensate us for things we made need (underwear, basic toiletries, and so on). Talk about the worst customer service and not caring, especially on the holidays. Looks like I will definitely never, ever fly with them again after this last flight. read more

My experience with Spirit Airlines began and ended with extremely rude customer service. I approached the customer service desk 44 minutes before my flight check in, to find two representatives inform me that I missed the cut-off and should take my oversized luggage with me to the check-in gate. A week or so before the trip, the airline messages and asks if we're checking some bags. I assumed that we get a carry on each, right? No. We get to pay $62 on the app, a day before $64 and at the airport, it's $74. Each. For one way. I thought we'd just bring our wallets and buy Aerosmith shirts, toothbrush and underwear and we'd still be paying less. And then we get the news that a storm's coming and Aerosmith cancelled. We decided to just stay home and just listen to Steven Tyler from the comfort of home. So, Ticketmaster sends an email to say that they'll be refunding our tickets. Sweet! Park MGM will send the refund in three days. Nice! And Spirit? They sent me credits for half the amount I paid. The other half went to some mystery fee because I booked early. What was I thinking, right? They said I can only get a refund if I cancelled 7 days prior. How do I know that Old Man Tyler will get sick? Now, here's the clincher: if I don't book within 90 days, my entire credit amount will go to heaven, along with all my hopes and dreams. Are you kidding me? I don't want to touch the Spirit Air app lest I get charged for it! But now, I have to travel somewhere or lose almost $300 in credit. In 90 days. Aerosmith, I can forgive and love forever. If I could give negative stars I would - this airline must be stopped! I recently took a trip overseas with my partner and family members. I booked and paid for all the tickets there and back myself and spent a grip doing it - so I thought okay, our final flight back is only an hour from LAX back to OAK, why not save a little and just take a cheap flight. Even if it's a little uncomfortable who cares, it's at the end of our trip and we will be going straight home to bed anyway... what could go wrong? Well lemme tell you. I had heard that Spirit was not a great airline but I had no idea just how bad it really was. First off the terminal is at like the furthest end of LAX so it takes forever to get to from an international arrivals. We go to check in our two bags at the kiosk and the sign reads 40lbs or less... hold up, every other airline allows 50lbs, so wtf? Okay, whatever so we pay a little more if it's over. As I put the first bag up which is under weight I see the charge for 1 checked bag is $79! What the actual f***? I have flown sooooo many airlines and never paid more than $50 max. Someone who worked for spirit saw my reaction and recommend I pre-check on the app instead because it was cheaper. Okay cool, so I download the app and check the bags that way... still ridiculous. And the app is CRAP! Error upon error. That same person who said I should get it even said it was terrible. Anyway, I can't remember the exact prices but I believe it was $59 for the first, $79 for the second and like $94 for the third. And keep in mind this doesn't include overweight charges. So I check the two bags begrudgingly. And go up to turn them in. One is overweight by like 4lbs. The girl here also seeming to recognize how outrageous the fees are said I could move some items to my carry-ons in an effort to save money (because they don't weight those? Idk). Anyway, we had no room left so I just said I'd pay it. How much is the overage fee? An additional $59! Now we are at over $100 for 1 checked bag. At this point we are all pissed and now comes this... you don't even get a free carry on, only a small personal item (and I mean SMALL). You have to pay $60 per carry-on! This is some actual bullsh*t! By now I am so over it and I'm looking at other flights because I'm already going to be paying more in fees than the actual flight is worth I might as well just change flights and get on a reputable airline that won't screw me and just cancel these flights (which I am sure they charge fees for but at this point it's more about the principle of it all). Unfortunately, because this whole ordeal had taken so long already the only flight that was going to OAK anytime that same day was leaving in about 12 minutes and we are in the deep DEEP depths of LAX far from the legitimate terminals that we would need to be in. Anyway, stuck on this now 'first-class costing' flight. We get on, the seats are stiff, there's no pocket to put our things, nothing is included - not even soft drinks. Oh and there is literally like 10 people on this flight! So what, are we paying Hefty baggage fees because they can't fill a plane and this is the only way they can stay in business? I mean? Facts? We land on time (surprisingly) and head to get our bags. 1.5 hours later the baggage claim still reads Spirit flight 1454 (or whatever the number was) and two other flights have come and gone and all gotten their bags but about 7 of the 10 people on my flight are all still here waiting for our bags. So everyone is pretty irate by now and the spirit desk is saying that the bags are in LA. Then I ask one of the Spirit flight attendants from a later flight whose walking by if she knows about our bags and she walkie-talkies the baggage guy who says something along the lines of they put 3 flights worth of bags together and they will all come out when that last flight arrives. So lemme get this straight, without telling anyone the baggage department decided it was more convenient for them to put three flights worth of bags together making the first two flights wait for their baggage over an hour? Riggggghhhhttt, sure man that's totally reasonable. Charge us more than the cost of this crap flight to check our bags and then hold our bags from us. Nah we don't have people driving to the airport to pick us up, we aren't tired, we haven't been worrying that our sh*t was lost in LA for over an hour. No biggie, let's make your job easier on you. Like seriously I CAN'T. So I obviously complained to the airline and it took them almost a week to respond and there response was basically to explain the bag fees. I reserved and paid for "The Big Seat" as I have knees and a back that just freshly evaded a 22 year abused military career. Flying for 5 hours I knew my body would be in pain if left to the seats on the plane designed to only fit a hobbit or Smurf. I knew beforehand that taking a front row seat on a budget airline was not exactly giving me access to caviar and a well aged merlot. However, I thought that at least snacks would accompany with the ticket purchase. But, this is not the case. Sure, you download the Spirit app and see there's a food "icon" attached to your ticket. And one with an IQ above 10 would believe that would mean to include a meal during the flight. But, my dear reader you would be wrong. The benefit for making such a careless purchase would come with the fact that the seat doesn't tilt back. Who needs to lay back for 5 hours to enjoy a flight? Everyone knows that comfort comes from the ability from compartmentalization discomfort and live with regret to travel long distances. You see, food is extra. Sorry. Snacks you buy at Costco for 15 cents actually transform themselves 30,000 feet in the air into delicacies only fit for royalty. My gas station box of olives, nuts, and two crackers cost me $9. Had I known such posh food was only offered on such a first class rate plane, I would have purchased peasant food of my caliber from the already over charged airport merchant. Still cheaper than my petite bag of pistachios. This all leads me to the service. Or, the vacancy thereof. I apologize to the reader that I had (albeit a selfish thought now in reflection) that by paying hundreds of dollars that I slaved away to earn would in the least provide me with at most an above average or even average means of customer service. Well do not be surprised as the flight attendants are fully versed and trained in the arts of what has been recently referred to by the youngest of generations as "Having zero f@*ks". I felt terrible as I pressed the flight attendant call button and was greeted with a demeanor from the attendant's attitude that non-verbally communicated to me: " How dare you ask me for something, can't you see that I was busy playing Candy Crush"? Do not request services while on the flight. Clearly the employees paid to manage and wait on the passengers are not paid to do exactly that. I cannot complain or make heavy judgments on such an austere company such as Spirit Airlines. The plane did in fact take off, provide over priced Dollar General snacks, and land. Which in this case I am a 100% satisfied customer. However, outside of the impending doom of 30,000 feet failure, I will have to be the stick in the mud and say that although a "discount" airline you will find yourself through Wi-Fi, food, seating, baggage, assigning seats, alcohol, and soon to be air to breath fees during the flight that I wasn't aware of that clearly this isn't the catch all "bargain" airline as marketed. To the comforts the "Big Seat" is that. A bigger seat. I am very thankful as I paid $115 more than peasants seated behind me to be able to enjoy the extra 6" knees space while the serfs behind me get the same in the exit row for an additional $20. But, let's face it, I need to show every passenger coming aboard that I am special as even though they have no first class seating, I'm still closer to the pilots and my large faux leather seat is a clear icon of my high school education prestige. I'm relieved that my arrogant ways have been brought to light as I should have known better than thinking a $473 ticket would provide my selfish being with a minimal 100 calorie sustenance during my 5 hour flight. I can happily report to the reader that I no longer suffer from "Pay for what you get" mentality. Clearly my new role in society is to pay more for less. Thank you Spirit! You've given me humility and the ability to pay on top of bills to sustain my family well as just because I paid a week worth of wages for your 5 hours of work doesn't mean I deserve any customer service during said service. This airline sells you an inexpensive ticket and then takes every opportunity to put its hands in your pocket. They charge for seat assignments, luggage, Wi-Fi, and beverages. The only thing they don't charge for is the lavatory. I think soon they'll charge for that too. I had to pay $240 for my luggage to go from Oakland to Las Vegas round trip because it was 6 pounds over the limit. Their staff is rude, uncaring, and unprofessional. The seats in the airplane are smaller than those in all other planes and uncomfortable. There are no pockets for you to place your belongings. The seat doesn't recline, and it's less comfortable than those hard seats at the DMV. Avoid this airline at all costs. I booked round-trip across country to get a good rate and month after month which I booked a year in advance, I kept getting moved a few minutes here a half hour there blah blah blah, and soon I had layovers on both sides the worst of which had me spending 10 hours Just two hours from home in the Seattle airport overnight. The bulk of my trip had been accomplished except for the last two hours and at my most tired and exhausted, I had to sleep on the floor of the airport for 10 hours.
