Came in looking for a bike which we could bring our small child with on bike rides. After seeing the options we went with a cargo bike with a front compartment where our little can be stowed. Ours is also an e-bike with a rechargeable battery that powers the bike, or you can use the pedals like a regular bike. I must sing praises to our new friend Zach, the friendly face we met as soon as we entered the shop. Zach is the most approachable, warm, intelligent and patient person. This shop is incredible! We are tandem bikers and stopped in with a flat. They not only fixed the tube and tire but several other issues that no one has ever been able to figure out. We moved here from Colorado in July. Coming from Colorado, all we had was a 4x4 that got four gallons to the mile, two horses, skis, and a well worn pair of hiking boots. We had never personally ridden bicycles before, but we were aware of the contraptions. Furthermore, we have learned that Thomas Edison or one of his protégés managed to put electricity into bicycles. Upon hearing this, we hopped in our truck and sideswiped practically every car parked on Division in our hurry to get down to Splendid late one Sunday afternoon. Barb was DELIGHTFUL, staying a full hour after the shop closed. Not only did she get me and my wife from training wheels to doing 25 mph on pedal power and a self righteous rage at anybody in a gas vehicle, she did it all with a smile. My four year old kid is also now a unicycle pro, but the loopty loop qualification test to get her certification was a bit much for my timid heart. After test driving 37 ebikes (the Mad Max one was my favorite, but cargo space was limited and what was available was spikey) we settled on a Tern GSD 10. The branding material says GSD stands for "Getting Stuff Done" but we're an occasionally edgy family, so we swap out that S word for another four letter S word. Anyway, we got the one with the accessories that turn this thing into the minivan of ebikes. We load the kid in the back with her rucksack full of toys, 41 snack varieties, three changes of clothes, a change of shoes, two coats cause "I didn't want to wear that one anymore so I gave it to the bathroom person", and the family French Bulldog, Madam FartsNBurps and hit the town. Hills, bridges, abandoned shopping carts, and piles of leftover IPA hops, this bike gets over it all. We felt bad we had to get rid of the horses, but they were going a little too native (I didn't even realize that you could give horses full sleeve tattoos and nose piercings). I took my Tern GSD here after getting poor customer service at the other big SE cargo bike shop and I'm so glad I found Splendid Cycles! They carry Tern accessories, Yepp child seats, and a lot of other cargo bike accessories. They are very generous with their time. I stopped by after the chain on my bike came off. After putting the chain back on and adjusting it so it would stay on, they also fixed a few other parts of the bike that needed attention. It suddenly rode like a dream. Hands down best purchasing experience I've had in a LONG time. Joel, Barb, Scott - everyone in the shop was truly focused on finding the right bike to fit our needs...there was no pressure. I was able to test 5 bikes (even taking 2 home for 24-48 hours to test on my day to day routes). They were extremely patient, knowledgable, and helpful. These guys run one of the country's best bike shops, at least of the ones I've ever dealt with. I live in San Francisco but order Bullitt accessories through them and have gotten great advice as well. When I was in Portland on vacation they even gave me a great deal on renting a Bullitt to take my kids around. Joel and the staff are clearly passionate about getting families on bikes, and I think are leaders in a movement that can eventually become mainstream outside of Portland, San Francisco, etc. It's something that can help with our obesity crisis, make cities more livable for everyone, and is also just a lot of fun for parents and kids. I stopped by Splendid Cycles and was sad to see that it wouldn't be open for another 20 minutes. We bought an electrically-assisted cargo bike (Edgerunner) for my wife from Splendid a few months back. The bike is wonderful and has transformed my wife's bike use, though we did have some electrical glitches (not their doing) with it initially.
