I travel to Jacksonville from Seattle - via Orlando International Airport - via rental car once a year, I found this place last year at night, starving & tired. When I end up anyplace that has Patty Melts I tend to go for that, more often than not I'm usually disappointed... I saw the Patty Melt My Face and thought, damn if that isn't a dare. Oh my f-ing god I lost my mind! Finally somebody got it not just right but perfect. My first reaction was the chef/cook was a some sort of magician, this was Voodoo man, I thought was dreaming...the ratios of onion to cheese to sauce and those burgers were perfectly cooked, juicy ... and the the bread; fucking WOW, perfectly griddled, caramelized and not overwhelming. Heaven. Mac-n-Cheese as a side I thought would be way to much food but, shit! here we go again!! Delicious! I was literally completely nervous when yesterday I came back, exactly a year apart, the staff super sweet, and I asked if the chef was still here..."Yes!" Holy crap! I normally order patty melts with bacon because I've been burned so many times & I figure - well at least I'll enjoy the bacon. Last year I did like usual. This time I was so freaked out he was still back there I forgot the bacon and had it OG style. I showed the bartender my picture of my meal from last year, yes I'm a dork she hooked me up: Patty Melt My Face, side of Mac and a perfect IPA (well two, cause I'm watching my health) My only regret is that it's going to be a really long year to get back there and want try EVERYTHING. You come in, order and pay for your food, and take a seat. Apparently, you can also take a seat, order, pay after. Which we did not knowing how it worked. They're accommodating. The inside is small with brick and graffiti. The murals are cool to look at. They also have a small kitchen but the food coming out is delicious and comforting. The hubs had the carne caliente. It has a lot of Mac and cheese, pickled jalapeños, onions, bell peppers, and meat wasn't over done. He liked it so much he had it again the following day. I had the Jacksonvegan. It comes on bread but the bartender said it was great on lettuce. So I tried that. LOVED it! Their crunchy "bacon" aioli was so good in that sandwich. The Mac and cheese on the side was good too. It was filling without being heavy. We also had avocado fries and their soy sauce. Yummo. The back is a nice spot to be when it is cool outside. They have a small stage and picnic tables. OMG! This is my go-to place at least once a week, if not more. I love the staff, the food, the beer, and of course, the locals too. Not a big fan of the theater nearby snagging excessive parking and even trying to take the sidewalks, but that isn't Spliff's fault. I either grab the Dirty Bird (Really tasty chicken sandwich) or the Burning man (Spicy double stack hamburger) almost every time but have tried a few others which were excellent, like the bandit (Chicken salad sandwich). (Yes, I still wish they had fries, but the side salad or Mac'n'Cheese(if you can handle dairy) is excellent too. I love ordering a great draft beer while I wait for my food to go, which is usually done way before I finish my beer, as they are quick, even when slammed. read more

Looking for a great place right in the mix of Jacksonville...look no farther than Spliffs Gastropub right on the corner or Ocean and Forsyth. We picked a Friday night before the show and got there about 530pm....just in time. As we took a seat, looked at menu, ready to order our food and then....BAM the line was out the door, around the corner and every table was full. This place is a gold mine! So the party of 5 ordered and then we waited....and waited....and one by one our food came out. (yes we understood it got busy with only 2 workers) I ordered the pretzels bites, the pot stickers, and a salad. The pretzels came first....oh so good. Lightly salted nibblets of pretzel bites with spicy yellow mustard. Enough to be a shared app. Next out came my Thai sticks (pot stickers). They were so good....nicely steamed with a side of sauce. Lastly out came my salad....but now I am full. The salad was pretty substantial in size which pleased me...and you get a choice of dressings. So I ate...and well...salads are a no brainer....good! My friends all ordered many different things and from my understanding, the many different types of mac and cheese you can get are amazing!!! I have been here twice and I love the location (near Florida Theater) and that they are open late. I was informed by the "order taker" on my last visit that they were out of several chicken dishes. Starving at 11pm and having not eaten all day I ordered the Brotherly Love. Flaky pastry filled with provolone cheese, tri tip steak, onions and peppers. It was just ok. The pastry and cheese were good but the steak was kibble like and tough. The cucumber salad as a side was good. Good craft beer selection. From both visits I wish the food had been better and the service was a little more helpful/friendly. read more

We walked in and saw that none of the staff (not even kitchen staff) were wearing masks and quickly turned back around and left. This is my goto place for late night dining. The Dirty Bird chicken sandwich and patty melts are excellent. Mac and cheese is the best side. Sit at the bar and observe the back of the house/front of the house banter. Order one of the fine beers to select from. Always a few lagers or pilsners. People watching through the window is fun too. All the kids on scooters reminds me of teens at a roller rink but cooler because it is futuristic and electric. read more

We stopped by after a Shrimp game a couple weeks ago. The Green Goddess salad was honestly horrible. But how can a salad be horrible right? I was shocked how bad it was. Everything was very warm, including the dressing. Also, it was about three or four salads worth piled onto one too-small plate. I put some of the salad in a to-go box to make it more manageable, ate like three bites, and threw the rest away. DO NOT recommend. But, on a positive note my date got one of the Mac N Cheeses and it was really good. I used to work one block away and came here somewhat often. Though, I admit it was mostly due to lack of options. I used to get the chicken salad sandwich with a side of mac n cheese and it was good! Though too expensive in my opinion. We came in late night as this was one of the only spots for food. There was a short line but what seemed like only one person managing taking orders, making drinks, and serving tables... essentially the entire front of house. I hope she wasn't making the food too! Because of this, the service was pretty dismal but I don't blame her as she was in the weeds. I had the Foghorn Leghorn. The pastry was delicious but I wish there was more filling inside. Nestled next to 1904 Music Hall is Spliff's Gastropub. The contemporary dive bar specializes in craft beer, select wine and of course, pub fare. I think it's fairly obvious that the cuisine is catered to one's inebriated state. It's called Spliff's for crying out loud! The Goat Boy w/ Mac n' Cheese - marketed as a gourmet grilled cheese, I think the execution was short of the concept. The buttery, toasted bread was the best part of the sandwich, but the overcooked tri-tip meat had my tastebuds in tears. As far as the mac n' cheese goes, maybe I'm in the minority here, but it tasted watery and very bland. One of the most forgettable mac n' cheeses I can remember. Love the tap selections, but $6.50 for a pint?? Mia Beer Co's Mega Mix is one of my favorite beers this year. I hate to see the price inflation when I can purchase a six-pack for $9.99. I didn't feel like I received my money's worth here. However, due to the large menu, the massive outdoor area, and the cool cultivated vibe, I'd definitely give them another shot. read more

My wife and I went here before a comedy show at the Florida theater for a bite. The line was long and there was no where to sit, but after checking out the other options around we decided to stay and wait. It took about 20 mins to order and another 45 to get our food, but we found a seat at the bar, got a drink and hung out. The interior is laid out well and could use some more seating, but in think they have as much as they can functionally for waitstaff and patrons to get around. When our number was called, we were warned about the wait by the staff, and despite being in the weeds for hours were very friendly and had smiles on while quickly getting orders ready. We both had burgers which were seasoned well and tasted great. I want to go back and try it on a day or evening when it is not as busy, but overall a great choice downtown for burgers and such, just be sure to plan ahead on event nights. read more

We ordered dumplings as our appetizer, and the bbq pork grilled cheese and chicken and rice bowl with a habanero aioli. The grilled cheese was out of this world! They have a bunch of different local hot sauces that I sampled and they were incredible. My fiancee got the rice bowl and loved the aioli and the variety of options they offered for it! They also were extremely vegan friendly which is a rare find to have a place that has a page of their menu dedicated to that! We sat at the bar and the staff was extremely accommodating. I liked the vibe there as the music was really cool too. The biggest issue was the mac and cheese. How can a place that features Mac and cheese so prominently on their menu do it so poorly? Cool vibe, small place, really a neat find. Okay, parking is an issue, as is the construction for the new Cowfard Steak House, but it is worth the effort. If it helps, look for the big 904 on the window and Spliff's is next door. The food is really cool, a mix of upscale grilled cheese, tri-tip steak, salads and fun foods. At least at lunch, it is a counter order restaurant, much like Blacksheep, and food is delivered to your table. I have tried their special Mac n Cheese, the tri-top sandwich (a little kick) and the grilled cheese and I am always thrilled with my choices. One of the few places open on a Sunday night that fed myself, 13, 11, & 9 year old downtown after an adventure with my kids They were very busy, but, the bartenders were so friendly and got a spot at the bar immediately & we were kept busy by a staff member( I believe a chef there by the name of Breeze) he stood there and talked to us for an hour. Especially my kids about everything from anime, music, school. He didn't have to engage us like that after working a whole shift. The character of the staff is just wonderful. I was honestly nervous at first bringing my group if kids into a a bar like atmosphere, but, they sure did make us feel at home. And the food was amazing.
