We wanted to have lunch at someplace new. Since my husband is a whiskey lover he wanted to check this place out. It's a free standing restaurant in the St. John's Shopping Center. We were immediately impressed when we went in; lots of dark wood and a long bar with shelves and shelves of spirits. There were mostly bourbons and whiskeys. They even had a rolling ladder so bartenders could reach top-shelf bottles. We had about a 10 minute wait for a table on a Saturday for lunch. The time went by quickly and we were seated at a small wooden table. Our server, Erin, approached us quickly and took our drink orders. I ordered a Blue Moon and my husband had the WC Old-Fashioned. It was made with Evan Williams 1783 Bourbon and he said it was quite good. ($13). For food; I had the Rooster Royale which was a fried chicken sandwich with pickles and hot honey BBQ sauce. It was $16.50, and one of the best chicken sandwiches I've ever had! Even the bun was delicious! I'd planned on only eating half; but I ended up eating it all because it was so good. I also had the homemade chips which were yummy too. My husband had the Reuben which was $19. He said it was really tasty and full of meat. He commented that it didn't get "mushy" or fall apart. He had the crispy potatoes as his side and he raved about those too. We really enjoyed our meal at Whiskey Cake and would definitely return. We came here today for my goddaughter's graduation celebratory lunch. Having never been here I was not sure what the menu options would be or what to expect. First I have to commend Christina, who was our server. A table of eight, she managed us with such grace, professionalism, and outstanding service! With a constant smile on her face, she asked us open questions and was very attentive. Not once did I have to ask for an iced tea refill because she was staying on top of it! The menu, though short with options did have a creative variety. We all tried the cinnamon roll, which I have to say was beyond, and I do mean beyond outstanding. In fact, it was the best cinnamon roll I have ever had with the toasted pecans and the sauce. WOW!! I ended up with the pancakes and eggs, and the eggs were cooked perfectly! The pancakes were were thick and had good flavor. It was a little overcooked for what I prefer, but overall, it was very good. I came here for Mother's Day and had a reservation for 12pm. We were greeted by the hosts and seated shortly after. The overall restaurant was very nice and spacious. It was a little loud but considering they were busy for Mother's day, it was to be expected. We ordered two appetizers: Bloody Mary Deviled Eggs & Bacon. Both great but the bacon is definitely a must try. Great flavor and melts in your mouth. For our entrees, we ordered shrimp and grits, hangover burger, farmers breakfast, and rotisserie farm bird. This is the second experience that I've had a Whiskey Cakes. My first was in Round Rock, Texas. Last night, was The Town center in Jax. Both were consistently amazing! The food and service were impeccable!!! Having tried both places, that enabled me to try several different dishes. My recommendations for appetizers, The fried green tomatoes, and the deviled eggs (it will be a surprise as to which one you get, they change.) we had the scallion and barbecue. The goat cheese fondue was delicious as well. I've had the steak salad for dinner as well as the Reuben. Whatever you get, you're gonna be eating well and leaving happy! As for ambiance, it's busy and fun. Which makes it loud. Not a great place for a "romantic evening" but more for a fun, laughter filled night. read more

THORNS & ROSES - it had zero-proof tequila, guava, jalapeño, lime, and simple. You can taste a little "kick" in the drink, but the flavors together were good. JESSICA WABBIT - it had mint, carrot, lime, pineapple, pineapple-ginger syrup, and ginger beer. Very good and semi-sweet. I really like ginger beer so this brought a little bubbly feeling. Upon walking in the atmosphere is amazing! We were seated promptly and our waitress came to get drink and app orders. We ordered the rum punch and the spinach dip to start. The spinach dip was much more creamier than I'm used to, not as thick of a consistency and it did not stay warm in the bowl it was served in, it started to cool down after we first dug into it. For a recent work trip, I dined at this location for dinner one evening with a fellow coworker from Arizona. I love deviled eggs, and I was intrigued when it was mentioned that they are "always seasonal, never predictable." We figured since it was within a mile of the hotel, why not check this place out? I ordered a Pineapple Cilantro Smash at the recommendation of the server, and the bar had out in less than 10 minutes. Even our food arrived within 30 minutes of ordering, though the restaurant was bustling with business. I felt like it was a good balance of speed, accuracy, and not feeling rushed! Overall, we enjoyed the decor of the establishment as it made for a relaxed dinner dining experience. The service was fantastic, and we enjoyed our food. The deviled eggs were pretty good, though I removed the bacon as not a fan of pork. The tavern burger was unique in flavor with the brisket blend, and I really enjoyed it. We came on a Thursday evening without a reservation, and we were able to be seated within 15 min, so not too bad! The goat cheese fondue was so good. It comes out literally bubbling, and you get to watch them mix it up right in front of you. I thought it would be a lot funkier than it actually was, so I think non goat cheese lovers will enjoy this too as it's pretty mild. The roasted garlic, tomatoes, and olives are all really complimentary flavors too. All around delicious! I also really enjoyed the French Onion burger. So juicy, so oniony, without being too salty or overpowering. The fries were also soo crispy. I wasn't the biggest fan of the grilled shrimp rigatoni though. The shrimp was cooked really nicely, and with good flavor. But the pasta was super soft, and the tomato sauce was nothing special to me. I liked the greens in it though. We were sadly too full to get the whiskey cake, but I'm for sure getting that next time. This place intrigued me when an episode on First Coast Living on NBC 12 in Jacksonville, FL. aired a few weeks ago. What was depicted on the show was spot on! My wife & I was in town for the Journey concert at VyStar Memorial and decided to have brunch the next morning before we headed back home to St. Simons Island. Let's just say Whiskey Cake didn't disappoint. This is not a 5 star but a strong 4.5 star visit. Samantha our server was fantastic and attentive to our dining experience while we were there enjoying our meal. I had the Crab Cake Benedict & my wife had the Crispy Fried Chicken over a bed of greens. Great presentation and great flavor! We also had a couple of adult beverages. Did you know that Marie Antoinette likely never actually said the phrase, "Let them eat cake"? Did you also know that the Bourbon dynasty (the House of Bourbon) ruled France for approximately 213 years? Two interesting facts about French history that include 'cake' and 'bourbon' - which is a kind of whiskey. Interestingly, I had a chance to try the restaurant Whiskey Cake recently. Well, no, I didn't get to go to France. It's at Town Center. Located in the old Ida Clare restaurant, it's a big space with a nice bar and plenty of seating. Parking? Not so great. Every space was full. But fortunately there is plenty of parking if you're willing to walk a little bit from the Dillard's lot. Restaurants focused on bourbon and other whiskeys have popped up a lot over the past few years as interest has skyrocketed. Whiskey Cake does have a decent selection, which you can see on the website. Unfortunately, they don't provide you with a whiskey menu when you sit down, which seemed like a mistake to me. I looked on my phone and ordered, but it's definitely something I would recommend they add. I tried the Rooster Royale. It's a fried chicken sandwich with a hot honey bbq sauce. The chicken breast was juicy and tender. Bun to bird ratio was good. The bbq sauce was sweet, and didn't have a heavy bbq flavor. My wife said she tasted cumin in the flavor. She has a much more sophisticated palette than me, and I also have no idea what cumin is or what it tastes like, so I obviously believed her. The fries that came with it were fine, but nothing to write home about ("Dear mom, Having a great time at camp. Let me tell you about the fries I had last night. . .") oh and they serve a somewhat off catsup that has tomato seeds in it. Why? I don't know. What's wrong with regular catsup? My wife tried the Reuben. It was fine. A little salty to me. Others in our group tried the tavern burger and the grilled chopped chicken salad. They both seemed to like their meals, but no one was raving about a dish. There's only one dessert item - the bourbon cake. A friend told me that it was a 'must try!' So we tried it. It's a big piece of sticky toffee cake, covered in a bourbon anglaise, spiced pecans and a side of whipped cream. Apparently you could also order some ice cream to go with it. The cake was good. Not great for one in our party with a nut allergy. We just didn't let him eat cake. Whisky Cake is fine. Are there better restaurants out there to try? Absolutely. Will you have a bad meal there? I don't think so. But in what I know is a very difficult and competitive industry, let's just say I don't think the Whisky Cake dynasty will last that long. But you should try the cake. read more

I only have one photo, but what a great brunch experience. We met up with friends we haven't seen in forever, and were thrilled that Whiskey Cake offers reservations. We were seated immediately and our server was absolutely fantastic. When everyone got there, we ordered Bloody Marys (which were gorgeous), mimosas (stunning) and I got a Cold Fashioned, which is basically a cold brew (coffee-infused bourbon) with housemade cold foam. Be still, my heart. We started with the goat cheese fondue for the table. It was creamy and warm with toasted sourdough, olive oil, and plenty of olives and roasted peppers and garlic. For food, we all ordered something different. I had the Avocado Toast with a side of mac and cheese. The toast was delicious, on sourdough, with arugula, tomato, smashed avocado and thick, crispy bacon and pickled onions. also at our table was the Prime Rib and Gouda stack, a Farmer's Breakfast, the Crab Benedict, Shrimp and Grits, and the Cherry French Toast. This was my first time having brunch here. And overall, the food was just so-so. I had a Colossal Cinnamon Roll with a side of millionaires bacon. The Millionaires Bacon just wasn't for me. I expected it to lean a little sweet given the description, but I thought there would still be a hint of the salty bacon in there somewhere. There wasn't. And while I also expected a little glaze from the brown sugar, this was too much. Almost was like... bacon jerky trying to eat it. Someone else at the table got the chicken and waffle and enjoyed it. I didn't taste test but it smelled good! And a piece of the whiskey cake itself was split among us. That was probable the best part foodwise. My favorite part of the meal was the drinks though. A few good mocktail options, which I was thrilled with! I had the Jessica Wabbit, which is mint, carrot, lime, pineapple flavors in ginger beer. I could have had like 8 of them they were so good! The ginger beer is strong and the pineapple flavor really showed thru. I taste the carrot a little, but I think it was mostly there for the color. It is a pretty and vibrant drink! Our server was wonderful (and the reason I wounded up to 4 stars). Something I thought was interesting though (unrelated to the server!), someone at our table ordered iced tea, and they had to brew some! Didn't have it just on hand. Not sure if that is normal or something just ran out. It took a little time to come out but was so good and fresh. Overall the experience was fine. Late evening visit and there was a company event on the patio so I was unable to sit outside. Instead, I had a seat at the bar. There is a good size drink selection and the bartender, Mila, was very friendly and helpful. I choose the NY Strip, and unfortunately the wrong steak came out. The bartender quickly corrected it and put a rush on the replacement. It was delicious, full of flavor and filling. Paired with some potatoes and it made for a great meal. Whiskey Cake in Jacksonville feels like the kind of place where a good meal slowly turns into a story you retell later, usually starting with "so we weren't even that hungry but then..." Let's start with the turkey chili, because it deserves top billing. This stuff was so good I briefly considered ordering a second bowl and calling it a day. Rich, comforting, and deeply satisfying. I could eat that all day, cancel my plans, and feel like I made the right life choice. The shaved steak sandwich with Gouda was solid. Nothing wrong with it at all. But the real star snuck in quietly wearing jalapeno bread. That bread might actually change lives. Warm, flavorful, with just enough kick to make you question why all sandwiches are not served this way. We also shared the shrimp rigatoni. It was good. Smooth. Comforting. But it needed a little more attitude. This dish was the culinary version of driving the speed limit in the left lane. Technically fine, but come on, let's move things along a bit. Service deserves serious praise. Our table was ready when we arrived, which already put things on the right track. Adam, our server, was friendly, attentive, and nailed that perfect balance of being there when you need him and invisible when you do not. Overall, a strong four stars. A place I want to love, but can't...yet. First let me say the staff are wonderful. We sat at the bar and had great conversations, nice recommendations and great drinks. The cocktails are tasty and include house made ingredients. Go for happier and get some of their best for 40% off the regular prices. The fact that Evan Williams 1783 is the well for their Happy Hour Old Fashioned is fantastic. The food left something to be desired (for me and it is possibly only me). The appetizers weren't designed as shareable they're designed to "impress" sooo we got nothing. Eventually we had to eat and I grabbed a burger. Sadly it was over done so was dry and disappointing. The namesake cake did not disappoint at all. Warm and gooey and really hit the spot. This is a place I WANT to me. A spot I can enjoy with my friends or coworkers after a long day. Oh my goodness, this place is amazing! We googled patio dining and got so much more as we scored two bar seats right in front of the service bar on a busy Easter brunch sitting. Austin greeted us with a warm welcome and gave us the option of guiding our experience and or if we wanted to explore the menu ourselves, I love he gave the option by the way! Of course we opted for the guided experience and he introduced this amazing concept with fresh made juices and farm to table sources and was just genuinely enthusiastic about the amazing offerings he has. The drinks we had were good: espresso martinis, Tracy's garden, wabbit smash, wine, etc. Food wise: I honestly think the food is overpriced for the portion sizes. I got a steak salad for $23 and it had all of about 3 strips of steak on it which was disappointing. Others ordered soup and steak frites. They seemed to be fine with their orders. The whiskey cake dessert was good but not as flavorful as I had imagined. It was a little dry for my liking but the whipped cream was great and helped moisten it. Our group of ten celebrated two birthdays and decided to order appetizers and drinks to start. Since I didn't want anything sweet, our server recommended Tracy's Garden which I ended up really enjoying. For the main course, I went with the pork chop. It was tasty, but I wasn't a fan of the root vegetables that accompanied it. My wife had the fish and chips, though 1/3 of the fish broke off and wasn't served. Two others also ordered the fish and chips and you could tell the difference in comparison. It also tasted a bit bland. On the plus side, the service was fantastic. Our solo server handled our group with ease making the experience enjoyable. It would have been a nice touch if they gave the birthday celebrants a complimentary whiskey cake, even a small one. The service was not very good. 3 of the four drinks were right. They got a bottled beer wrong? Then we asked for another beer and when they brought it out they did not open it and it wasn't a twist top. Salad was forgotten then ran out after asking more than once. 3 Chicken melts and one my strip steak took over an hour for a restaurant that was not busy. When the food came out, only two of the four meals came out. The other two meals were delayed by more than 10 min. when they came out one of the chicken melts was wrong and the Mac and cheese (which was an up charge) was cold. Our order consisted of: 2 Raspberry Bourbon Mules one Old forester old fashioned bottle of beer Starter was an order of deviled eggs (which were ok). For dinner 3 chicken melts and one NY Strip. On a positive note the manager came out twice to check in on us, but I promise I wont be back. No photos taken (which is a first for me) but honestly it wasn't worth my time as we obviously were not worth Whiskey Cakes Time. We didn't know what to expect cuisine wise by the name of the restaurant. The first time we went was around lunch time and they offered brunch and lunch options even during the week. The restaurant has a cool ambiance with a main focus on their floor to ceiling bar and open concept kitchen. The hostess was friendly and fun both times we went, which is nice because most restaurants have hosts that seem to hate their job. I love the farm to table menu and custom drinks they offer. Service was great and our waitress and bar staff worked together by bringing drinks when they were ready. Definitely a bit loud because of the open ceilings but that typical with most restaurants. I love any place that serves deliciously prepared locally sourced food! I failed to get photos of any of our apps because we were too excited to dig in. The deviled eggs, candied bacon, fire roasted brussel sprouts, and the hand cut fries with dipping sauce options were all superb! I recommend them all. Of course the downside (and upside) to local sourcing is the ever evolving menu based on what's fresh and available so you may not have the opportunity to try some things depending on timing. Although I almost never order a sandwich, I went with the shaved prime rib & Gouda based on a recommendation from a friend and it did not disappoint! My entire table only raved about their meals. There is a full bar with of course plenty of whiskey to choose from. I found the inside pretty quaint so if you have a large party like we did I definitely recommend reservations ahead of time. It was absolutely delicious and very filling. The potatoes served with it were also very good. My husband had the reuben sandwich. He also enjoyed his meal. My mother in law had the fish and chips. We tried this place for the first time during our visit to Jax. We were seated right away and our server was very sweet. She gave great recommendations for different things to try on the menu from appetizers to drinks. We tried a couple of their bourbon flights and really enjoyed the experience. The ambiance is also very nice and service was great. We tried their Brussel sprouts, hummus, fries, mac and cheese, and their tavern burger. Whiskey cake really gives the made from scratch vibes ( which they are a scratch kitchen lol) but it feels to inviting. Upon entering we were greeting immediately and seated with very little wait time. Once we were seated we did wait a minute before we were checked on but once our server came they immediately took our orders and answered all our questions that we had regarding the menu. Great location, plenty of parking and good atmosphere with tables and booths as well as bar. Awesome service Some good stuff on the menu, went In forFather's day brunch and had breakfast and like that coffee came in French press, with lots of coffee so no worries on refills. Food was hot and fresh with good sized portions. Will definitely be back. read more

I was in Jacksonville for a short visit so of course I went to see what my foodie friends on Yelp suggested. While the menu looked appealing, the 4.1 review was scaring me a bit. Eventually I made it there and I'm so glad that I did. I ended up going 2 days in a row! Adam was my waiter both days and he was amazing. His recommendations were spot on and he was patient. I love a good steak salad nit he STRONGLY recommended the Chicken Chopped salad. It was amazing. The second day I substituted the blue cheese for gruyere cheese, it was delicious. I also enjoyed the turkey chili. The drinks were yummy. During happy hour the drinks are $7. The whiskey cake is made with dates giving it a unique and delicious flavor. Pro Tip: Go and sit on the booth on the patio. Also, ask for Adam! read more
