Choose a table not a booth until they get blinds Let me say that the place has only been open two weeks so keep that in mind when reading my review. I will definitely return in a few months and update my review. I really really wanted to like this place. The menu has great potential but the execution leaves a bit to be desired. The food is mostly tasteless which is very unfortunate. Overall I feel that what the menu describes is not what you actually get. Almost like it is false advertising. Hard to explain so I'll go through dish by dish. The best thing we had were the truffle fries. Crunchy and truffley. (I know that's not a word but I'm sure you get my drift) Buffalo mac and cheese was just ok. Bottom layer is buffalo chicken then that is topped with fusilli pasta which has a little blue cheese on that. Another reviewer raved about this dish and we all just thought it was ok. We couldn't even tell it had blue cheese on it. (disclosure: some of us like blue cheese and some don't and even the people who don't were disappointed with this dish) Irish Nachos: Basically these are loaded cheese fries. These were good, nothing to complain or rave about. Beer and Cheese Soup: Terrible. The soup had ZERO taste. None. Didn't taste like beer or cheese or soup for that matter. Awful. Salt and Malt Vinegar Wings: These were good. The two people that ate them said that they could have maybe used more malt vinegar but they were decent wings. Maybe they could serve them with a side of malt vinegar? Our server brought out both dipping dressings, ranch and blue cheese. Again, the blue cheese had no taste. Overstuffed Oyster Po-Boy: Terrible. This is not a true New Orleans po-boy served on french bread. The bread is some kind of hard biscuit bread? (no one could figure it out but it was ROCK hard) with some fried oysters on it about 6" in size. Disappointing. French Dip: Mixed reviews on this one. Again, it has potential like everything else on the menu but just not executed right. The bread was falling apart (like a crumbly biscuit?) and there were caramelized onions on it which didn't really mesh with the rosemary au jus. The Rosemary Au Jus was tasty. Kids Grilled Cheese: Two thumbs up from our almost 8 year old. She got the truffle fries to go with it and gave two thumbs up for them as well. We ordered a flight of 4 beers which seems like a good deal. (We aren't beer drinkers) Beers came on a nice board where they write the name of the beers on there. Fun. Overall I'm torn between 2 and 3 stars but I've got to bump them down to 2 because of the evening sun coming in blindingly though the windows. Do not sit at a booth between 5pm and 7pm. Not only does the sun blind you but that whole wall of booths get hot! Maybe that is done on purpose so you drink more beer? ;) I'd think that as long as it took to build that building they could have gotten the air conditioning right and done something about the noise. There were 5 people at the bar and we were the 4th table of people to be seated and it was so loud that I couldn't hear the people sitting across the booth from me. Service was good and helpful and attentive. The hostess could use a little experience as it took her almost 5 minutes to figure out where to seat us. (remember there were only 3 other tables in the place) Again, the menu has such great potential but the execution leaves a bit to be desired. I want to like this place so much so I will go back in a few months and I hope to come here and update my review to more stars. Come on Old Rail! You can do it! read more

Such a disappointing experience! My friends and I took a trip to Mandeville and Abita Springs over July 4 weekend to visit breweries and ride bikes. Old Rail Brewing Company was our last stop - and we were ready for some beers and snacks! We ordered drinks and two plates of pretzel bites. My vegan friends asked if the pretzel bites had any butter. The bartender said shrugged, said no and walked away. When the pretzels arrived, I tasted them and couldn't tell if it was butter or oil I was tasting - so we asked again, very nicely, for the bartender to just check with the kitchen to see if any butter was used. He visibly rolled his eyes at us and walked to the kitchen. He came back and said, "Yeah, they brush a little butter on them before they send them out. Do you need an epi pen or something?" Okay, no - they aren't allergic to dairy. They're vegans. And it would have been really, really easy when we put the order in to ask the kitchen not to add butter. But instead he just ignored our request and then acted entirely put-out when we asked him to double-check. We said no, we don't need an epi pen. So he took the plate off the bar and dumped the pretzels in the trash right in front of us and walked away. Incredibly rude and everyone left Old Rail Brewing Company feeling lousy. read more

Found this place after yelping for somewhere to grab lunch with the dogs after a hike at Fontainbleau. In the end there were no free tables outside, what with it being a sunny sunday afternoon, so my husband and I left the exhausted pups in the car (with the windows down, of course) and grabbed a table at the bar. Two delicious beers (a refreshing blonde and a wacky but delicious IPA) and a shared French Dip sandwich later, we were sold! We don't venture to the North Shore too often but I appreciate awesome breweries like this existing for when we do :) Edit: how could I forget to mention that the bar person was making some incrediiiiible looking Bloody Mary's. Nice atmosphere. The food was good. The service started off decent then fizzled out halfway into our meal. I am a beer guy. When I go to a restaurant that brews their own beer, I usually like to try two or three different beers during the meal. I didn't get a chance because our waiter, Peyton, disappeared halfway through the meal. I actually came here twice before posting my review. I wanted to try some things and see if this place would be consistent. It was. The place looks great and the wait staff is always on top of things and pleasant. But both times we did come for lunch, so that is what I am basing my review on. We've had an Irish sounding guy as our waiter and also a very pleasant motherly hostess that made sure all was good with us. Five stars there. The appetizers... We actually got the same one twice and are blown away. The Blue Chips. It is so flavorful and feeds two very well. We saw the Alligator Bites going by for another table and that also looks super yummy. But it is hard to order anything other than those chips! Five stars. For entrees, we have ordered 4 different things by now, between beef/alligator&pork burgers, a French Dip and a shrimp po boy. All of them have the exact same problem: no flavor. It's pretty incredible that a place that serves an appetizer as flavorful as the Blue Chips can mess up their entrees. The side fries are good, though. 3 stars. We did not try beers as we had our son with us. But we definitely want to come here on a date and try a few, they look awesome and very promising! Good food that's consistent, which is more than you can say about a lot of places. They are a little quirky, but in a cool way. Their beer is good, and easy to get in and out at lunch. My last stop in my New Orleans trip was one of the best. Recommended by a local brewer, this spot has a small but delicious menu along with interesting beers on tap. Small crowd for a Sunday afternoon and easily got a booth for three. Ordered the French Dip sandwich with bleu chips ($12ish) and the seven sisters IPA ($5ish). Sandwich was large and the bread soaked up the au jus really well - making a very flavorful combination. Bleu cheese chips were incredibly potent, so wasn't able to finish. With the server recommendation, finished the great meal with a creamy pumpkin ale. Service here is fast and friendly. Easily the best place you can go after crossing the causeway. read more

I would say my favorite thing about Old Rail is the atmosphere. So here is a breakdown of the highs and lows :). -it can get pricey! We have never spent less than $50 (this will cover drinks and appetizers for two). For a nice dinner date you're going to exceed $75. -the atmosphere is what makes this place. I love sitting outside, but inside is very nice as well. I like this place a lot because the cornhole and being across the street from the Mandeville Trailhead make it nice for a date for people with kids. Our children are a tad older so we let them roam a bit, but they're usually happy with the cornhole. -the food is okay. Not mind blowing, but okay. We have tried everything from appetizers, to salads, smaller tapas plates, entrees, and dessert. All just okay, but once again, this is a place we've frequented more than once because it's such a great atmosphere. Bottom line, definitely go. I am not a beer drinker, it they have a pretty nice selection and flights for you to sample. My friend always goes for the beer, but the drinks and wine have always been good. The changing table in the ladies room surpasses most I've encountered, they actually had pads for it, and wipes available. Outstanding! Wish I could remember our servers name (a very nice young man).
