I went with a group and we got a little of everything. And I must say.. That EVERYTHING was amazing. And I don't say that often. The fish spread.. On point, the pimento spread.. Fresh and perfect, the blue chips.. Homemade and scrumptious, the mac n cheese.. Unctuous with a homemade hot sauce. Soups and gumbo.. Among the better I've had in awhile. The ambiance has is casual, open, clean, and has character (with its railroad tracks as foot hold). Oh. And don't forget the beer!! The IPAs are oh so good (didn't try others). Had a delicious Ruben the other day. I must say it was really good and the French fries were to die for. Had a really good flavor and spiced perfectly. The Ruben had the right amount of sour kraut and dressing not too much and not too little. The only down side was there were no servers, which I can't blame the business for if they can't find staff to work. Parking was no problem at all. Will definitely be going back. Thankfully I was able to catch this place before it closed. First place I've been to that had a Nitro Lager. (It was delicious by the way). Also had a Stout that was quite good and a buffalo chicken sandwich for dinner. Everything was really good. Sadly I was only in the area for one evening or I would have more to write. Waited until this restaurant could get settled in until I tried it out and finally got the opportunity! The 4 stars are for an overall decent experience with a couple of misses. Got the 4 beer sampler and split it with my boyfriend. Left the choosing of the beers to the waitress and she came back with some pretty good ones to sample. Good amount of beer tasting for $7. Next, we ordered the Blue Chips for an appetizer, which was the best choice we made all night. They were fan-freaking-tactic! Great flavors with the home cooked chips, topped with yummy blue cheese, PICKLED red onions(yum!) and some kind of aioli. For an entree, we were both feeling sandwiches for some reason. I got the French Dip and he got the Reuben. This is where the misses continued to occur(service was a little slow) The french dip was underwhelming, as I expected it to be as incredible as it was described on the menu. I saw that there was mustard on it, but must have just thought they knew what they were doing. No! Mustard does not belong on a French Dip! Ok? Just no! At least not in this case. The roast beef was a little bland and the au jus needed way more salt. The Reuben had mustard on it too, which I tried but didn't mind it much. Overall a nice experience, but I was expecting way more from the pictures and reviews. Next time I'm going to try the Shrimp and Grits or the Alligator sausage entree. The inside is nice. The only concern is the lighting. For dinner it was pretty bright inside. It would help improve the overall ambiance. The food was average. Wedge salad was good. Gumbo has a slightly different twist, strong unique flavor but not bad. Hanger steak lacked flavor, needed salt and the fries were a little soggy. I was looking forward to dessert and was shocked that the Chocolate cake was served cold. It was very hard. Like it just came out the fridge. I will always give 5 star rating on a Brewery when the Brew Master will come out and describe his brewing procedures. The one beer I questioned did not have any written notes on it. He came out and described in detail the brewing process for this beer. The restaurant had a great feel and the food was above average. All employees were courteous and helpful. Our bartender even described the old train tracks that were behind the brewery. The taps are all rail nails and the foot rest at the bar is a railroad rail. Brunch is amazing....some of the best waffles around with amazing but not overly sweet. Our waiter even came to check that our kids didn't have a nut allergy since there were candied pecans on top of the waffle and butter. I ordered the salmon spread which was pretty good on some rye bread with mustard and maybe pickles in there. It had a good spicy and pickly flavor to it which combined with the house potatoes was amazing. My husband ordered the steak and eggs and was not disappointed at all. Everything tasted amazing he said and he finished his meal before everyone!! The only downside was all the flies outside and mosquitos so next time we will probably eat inside. read more

The beers and pub food here are best experienced for lunch after a long bikeride on the Tammany Trace. It's a fabulous reward and conveniently located across the street from the Mandeville Trailhead. The service is quick. The brews on draft are fantastic. My favorite is the Belgian Blonde. Always plenty for seating for lunch on a weekend. First stop on our visit to Mandeville - though that was only because my car broke down and we were limited to bikes until I got a rental. The fact that it's right on the Tammany Trace got us in here. The atmosphere is great. It feels like an old railroad station. There is lots of space, no crowding between tables. The booths are huge, and the bar is separated from the rest of the restaurant with half-walls/shelves - this is nice when you want to relax after a long day's drive away from the noise of the bar. Service was mixed (and the reason for the loss of 1 star), The hostesses were great both times we visited, and the waitress on our first visit was awesome. She not only was friendly and efficient, but it was obvious she knew beer and was proud of what Old Rail put out. She took excellent care of us. The server who waited on us on Sunday night was a ice kid, but he didn't share our previous server's enthusiasm for Old Rail's beer. He also forgot part of our order (and I really wanted to try the boudin balls) and was generally slow. Beer was awesome. I had the opposite problem here I have at most breweries - there wasn't anything lighter available, just IPAs, stouts, etc. I settled on an ESB Sunday night because we had biked quite a bit that day and I needed something lighter. One oddity was their standard offerings were better than the seasonal/special offerings. Food overall was good. The blue chips are excellent, as was the buffalo chicken sandwich. The Divine Swine was pretty divine too. Prices were reasonable. A great place for food and beer. (Except, perhaps for vegans. But who cares?) read more

Let me just say first off this is the first time I've ever been here... absolutely awesome. Came here with my brother, bf, best friend and her bf after going by 2nd and Charles and bike riding and swimming for the day. Awesome waitress. Great beer! Good prices. And great food. We were there about two hours just visiting and catching up more before heading home for the day. We all had different stuff and liked it all. I went in on a Thursday and had the pot roast special. My son wanted the buffalo chicken sandwich but I forced him to have the shrimp and grits instead because I wanted that too. After taking my first bite of each I wanted the chef to come out and take a bow. IT WAS THAT GOOD!No, it was better than that. I'm thinking maybe parading the chef on a pedestal in downtown New Orleans like the Lombardi trophy would be more appropriate. First off, the pot roast was so flavorful and the fluffy mashed potatoes and gravy made it that much better. For the presentation, the pot roast was shredded into pieces and molded into a cylinder and browned crisp on each end. This ended up making the brown parts taste like the outer portions of the roast, sort of like the debris from roast beef or the burnt ends of barbecued pork. If you're like me then you know that's the best part of everything meat. You could just take your fork and separate the brown part until everything falls into a mound of Meat Mecca(my proposal for a new name)bathing in gravy. No need to ask for more gravy like I sometimes have to, because the person who did this understands the correct proportions of meat, mashed potatoes and gravy. And I wish they could teach the world since having to ask for more gravy prevents me from getting directly to my food - which is all I ever want to do. I have been thinking about this pot roast for days which is why I am writing this review. But it's only available on Thursdays unfortunately. Maybe they're just trying to save me from myself by not having it on the menu every day, but next time just ask me if I need to be rescued from the fluffy fairies waving their wands and depositing fat every where except my butt. Okay, I know I'm getting personal and that's not what this is about so back to shrimp and grits. When I took my first bite the textures of creamy and crispy just blew me away. It's a grit cake but not the hard dense kind, more like the texture of a hash brown and crispy on the outside but gooey on the inside. I couldn't even tell it was there at first because it was camouflaged under a puddle of sauce with tomatoes, sausage, shrimp and green things to decorate. I was skeptical when I first looked at it because shrimp and grits in my world traditionally has a creamy sauce without tomatoes. This was more like a tomato based Creole sauce except thinner like gravy. The only thing I didn't like was that the shrimp had the tails on them. I don't know what chef started this trend and thought that this would be cute, but it's not cute to have to work on your food to get to all of it. That always gives me flashbacks of being a little girl growing up in Southwest Louisiana being forced into spending much of my time peeling and deveining shrimp for gumbo. Okay, I know I'm getting personal again. After doing what the seafood processors are paid to do, I got to take a bite. My, my, my ( in my Johnny Gill voice) I am now a convert, so go ahead and baptize me in river of gravy. There really is another way to make shrimp and grits. All the different flavors and textures together - crispy from the grit cake, creamy from the grits inside, tangy from the sauce, chewy from the shrimp and spicy from the sausage was perfection from some kind of mad food scientist. I know someone spent lots of time working on this dish because IT TASTED LIKE GENIUS. We might just need two parades. I would like to tell you more details about the huge space with outdoor seating and about 20 or so beers they make themselves and about the tasty vegetables that came with the meals from somebody's yard and not their freezer but I'm getting impatient. It's 10:58 am and that means lunchtime. There is a 99% chance I am to go back to as soon as I'm done typing this. Even my son who has been asking to go back and that's big because he thinks McDonalds is food. We made a stop at this brewery on our way out to the Abita brewery. We wanted to grab a bite to eat and try a flight of their beers which we heard were fantastic. Well needless to say we weren't disappointed in the food and beer we're definitely up to standards and they have beyond excellent service. I can honestly say without reservation I thought it was going to be a freaking shit show getting 12 people lunch with only a 45 minutes to spare. So when we walked in the two bartenders immediately started pouring our group their flights of beer. After they were done he asked if we were going to order food and we all said yes. He handed out menus and went around the bar getting our orders. Everyone ordered a variety of different things I personally had the old rail burger with fries. As I've said in my prior reviews being a 23+ year veteran of the restaurant industry I really saw this going south fast. I mean a group of 12 people walk in at 12 o'clock and order lunch unannounced may not go so well. But I can tell you honest to God these guys handled it like a champs. I was absolutely floored at how fast the food made it to the bar!!!! I think I honestly even said to one of my friends holy shit I can't believe they got everyone's lunch out in less than 15 minutes!!!!!! The burger I had was off the chain it was a mix of boudin and pork patties which were to die for!! Moral of the story 12 people 12 flights of beer 12 individual lunch orders are successfully completed within the allotted 45 minute time frame!!!! OK, in most instances I find brew pubs to be rather overrated. However, that's not the case with the Old Rail. I'll start with the location - the designers did an excellent job with the faux-distressed brick walls (something that's often over done but actually works here). The brewing apparatus add to the light industrial look but it works! So...cool space! On to the food - it's damn solid for a brew pub! The seafood salad totally rocked - really good shrimp, crawfish, and crab meat on a bed of fresh greens. The dressing is outstanding. A simple dish, yes, but very well executed. The Pub Burger - one of the best in the NOLA metro area (maybe not THE BEST but up there). But this is a Brew Pub folks - let's discuss the beer shall we? Beer is an unfortunate casualty in many brew pubs. Not the case here! I have tried several of them - all excellent! All have a good body, are well balanced, and the brew master shows great restraint in the addition of the hops (quite often, in my opinion, overdone in many microbrews.) These are seriously good beers! The place can get a little loud (and very busy!) at times - but that's to be expected. Service can be a bit slow at times (this is steadily improving so I'm not knocking them for it.) Bottom line: When did you say that Pumpkin Ale was going to ready? Location, location, location. I had an early lunch here before a big bike ride on Saturday. It is right across the street from the Mandeville trailhead and is in a huge building. It was a perfect day to eat outside and the "adult grilled cheese" was delicious. As a small woman, I also appreciate that they offer "tasting size" beers. I had a "taste" of the cow-catcher milk stout. I had to, just because of the name. It was tasty and hearty. I should add that the "tasting size" are more than a thimble-full but small enough you can have 2-3 without a problem, the perfect tasting size (I'm guessing 4oz?). read more

Tip: Window seats are terrible between 5:30 and 6:30ish. Choose a table not a booth until they get blinds Let me say that the place has only been open two weeks so keep that in mind when reading my review. I will definitely return in a few months and update my review. I really really wanted to like this place. The menu has great potential but the execution leaves a bit to be desired. The food is mostly tasteless which is very unfortunate. Overall I feel that what the menu describes is not what you actually get. Almost like it is false advertising. Hard to explain so I'll go through dish by dish. The best thing we had were the truffle fries. Crunchy and truffley. (I know that's not a word but I'm sure you get my drift) Buffalo mac and cheese was just ok. Bottom layer is buffalo chicken then that is topped with fusilli pasta which has a little blue cheese on that. Another reviewer raved about this dish and we all just thought it was ok. We couldn't even tell it had blue cheese on it. (disclosure: some of us like blue cheese and some don't and even the people who don't were disappointed with this dish) Irish Nachos: Basically these are loaded cheese fries. These were good, nothing to complain or rave about. Beer and Cheese Soup: Terrible. The soup had ZERO taste. None. Didn't taste like beer or cheese or soup for that matter. Awful. Salt and Malt Vinegar Wings: These were good. The two people that ate them said that they could have maybe used more malt vinegar but they were decent wings. Maybe they could serve them with a side of malt vinegar? Our server brought out both dipping dressings, ranch and blue cheese. Again, the blue cheese had no taste. Overstuffed Oyster Po-Boy: Terrible. This is not a true New Orleans po-boy served on french bread. The bread is some kind of hard biscuit bread? (no one could figure it out but it was ROCK hard) with some fried oysters on it about 6" in size. Disappointing. French Dip: Mixed reviews on this one. Again, it has potential like everything else on the menu but just not executed right. The bread was falling apart (like a crumbly biscuit?) and there were caramelized onions on it which didn't really mesh with the rosemary au jus. The Rosemary Au Jus was tasty. Kids Grilled Cheese: Two thumbs up from our almost 8 year old. She got the truffle fries to go with it and gave two thumbs up for them as well. We ordered a flight of 4 beers which seems like a good deal. (We aren't beer drinkers) Beers came on a nice board where they write the name of the beers on there. Fun. Overall I'm torn between 2 and 3 stars but I've got to bump them down to 2 because of the evening sun coming in blindingly though the windows. Do not sit at a booth between 5pm and 7pm. Not only does the sun blind you but that whole wall of booths get hot! Maybe that is done on purpose so you drink more beer? ;) I'd think that as long as it took to build that building they could have gotten the air conditioning right and done something about the noise. There were 5 people at the bar and we were the 4th table of people to be seated and it was so loud that I couldn't hear the people sitting across the booth from me. Service was good and helpful and attentive. The hostess could use a little experience as it took her almost 5 minutes to figure out where to seat us. (remember there were only 3 other tables in the place) Again, the menu has such great potential but the execution leaves a bit to be desired. Such a disappointing experience! My friends and I took a trip to Mandeville and Abita Springs over July 4 weekend to visit breweries and ride bikes. Old Rail Brewing Company was our last stop - and we were ready for some beers and snacks! We ordered drinks and two plates of pretzel bites. My vegan friends asked if the pretzel bites had any butter. The bartender said shrugged, said no and walked away. When the pretzels arrived, I tasted them and couldn't tell if it was butter or oil I was tasting - so we asked again, very nicely, for the bartender to just check with the kitchen to see if any butter was used. He visibly rolled his eyes at us and walked to the kitchen. He came back and said, "Yeah, they brush a little butter on them before they send them out. Do you need an epi pen or something?" Okay, no - they aren't allergic to dairy. They're vegans. And it would have been really, really easy when we put the order in to ask the kitchen not to add butter. But instead he just ignored our request and then acted entirely put-out when we asked him to double-check. We said no, we don't need an epi pen. So he took the plate off the bar and dumped the pretzels in the trash right in front of us and walked away. Incredibly rude and everyone left Old Rail Brewing Company feeling lousy. read more

Love the decor. Food was very good. I had pulled pork sloppy joe. Good flavor. Wasn't a lot of sauce on it like I thought it would have. So, not so Sloppy of a Joe. But still good. Wife had the burger. It was very tasty. After having a bite of her burger I wished I had ordered that instead. Beers were good too. Only negative was very slow service.
