First, the place itself is pretty great. Lots of seating, a cool inside area, a nice outside area, and a setup that makes you want to hang out for a while. This is not one of those places where you walk in, have one drink, and immediately start wondering where else you should go. It feels like a place built for staying. The staff was friendly too, which matters when you are there with a group and everyone is ordering different things, moving around, and generally being a mild inconvenience. Now, about the drinks. The selection was solid. Not bad at all. But with "Beer Garden" in the name, I expected a little more beer. Maybe that is unfair. Maybe I am being too literal. But if you call yourself a beer garden, I am going to expect a beer list that makes me stop and think for a minute. This one did not quite do that. That said, the frozen drinks were fun and would be great in the summer heat. But the food. The food was excellent. I do not know that I expected the food to be the best part, but it may have been. The chicken sandwich special was outstanding, the cheese fries were exactly the kind of bad decision that makes you proud of yourself, and the pulled pork bahn mi was really, really good. I would go back for the food alone, which is not something I expected to say about a beer garden. Overall, Covington Beer Garden is a very good spot. Cool venue, friendly staff, fun drinks, and better food than it probably needs to have. I wish the beer list was a little more expansive, but that is really my only complaint. She was friendly, attentive, and personable. Regan would accompany the guy dropping off the food to let us know the rest of the food was coming or just to check that we received what we ordered. Our appetizers came and we were given enough time to enjoy then before our entrees arrived, our plates were cleared, and our drinks were full. To begin the meal we drinks. Then we shared the BBQ Shrimp (GF minus the Cornbread and French Bread), Gumbo, Shrimp & Corn Bisque (GF), and Wedge Salad (GF). The BBQ Shrimp were cooked just right and had a great sauce. The salad was a good size loaded with tomatoes, cheese, and bacon. Then I had a 14 oz Ribeye medium rare to accompany my Dirty Martini. The steak was cooked perfectly and seasoned nicely. My son enjoyed the BBQ Shrimp Pasta while my husband really liked his Etouffee Empanadas. The Blackened Scallops with Lobster Risotto looked delicious and my brother in law enjoyed it. My mother in law shared a few of the dozen Charbroiled Oysters she had for her entree. They were plump and juicy with great flavor. We ended the evening with Dragonfruit Sorbet, Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream, Creme Brulee, and of course an Espresso Martini. We enjoyed the Creme Brulee that was crunchy with big pieces of sugar that were browned with a torch. Both the sorbet and ice cream were also really good. Unfortunately my boyfriend left his sunglasses behind (that I gifted him and that have sentimental value). When he went back to look for them the next day, the "owner" aka co-owner Stephen refused to check the cameras, insisting that "it didn't work like that". And then requested a BRIBE of $100 dollars to check the cameras. Unfortunately the police had to be called and a report had to be made; which could've easily been avoided had the cameras been checked or another solution was provided in a professional or even slightly neutral way. NOT THE WAY TO RUN A BUSINESS. Absolutely unacceptable, unprofessional, and a slap in the face to the customers of this bar. He was rude and aggressive and Don himself would be horrified to know that this is what came of his legacy. NEVER supporting this disgrace of a business again. Do better.
