We stopped in here during a progressive night out (hitting up a few different spots). I was with a small group and we all started off with a drink then decided to get some sandwiches. The food menu is somewhat limited - mostly sandwiches and side dishes. I think they use a panini maker or something. Like many places in Austin, there are tons of beers on tap. The decor is fun and edgy, they keep the place cool and dark at night so the ambiance was interesting. It was not super busy or noisy, so that was good. I'd visit again next time I'm in town and in the mood for a beer and sandwich with friends. read more

I popped in for an iced vanilla latte after a meeting next door at the wonderful Austin Winery. My first thought after I took a sip was "tremendous". As in tremendously good! Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but I don't think they have coffee-coffee... the closest approximation is an Americano. I think I grimaced when one of the baristas told me they had cold brew (in lieu of iced coffee). Hipster trash! I thought... this after speedbumps were just put on Suburban and I've noticed an alarming amount of my neighbors suddenly have man buns. But I did calm down and tbh, the cold brew was really good. The space is open and artsy, music was loud but not painfully so. There were a surprising number of people there just hanging out. There's a smoking/outdoor area that's cozy. Baristas were pleasant and friendly. Can't comment on the food, other than that the baked goods looked fluffy and appealing. Austin has these pockets of unexpected treasures and the Spokesman is that! Also, I am from Spokane, WA and the name reminds me of home, so it has to be cool! Oh and it didn't disappoint. It's a coffee/bar with a unique industrial vibe. The coffee was tasty and the environment is very Austin and cool. It's a great spot for people that are able to work remote or college students to write a paper. They have a patio which I look forward to exploring when it warms up. This place has sort of an identity crisis and in some ways that's good, some ways not. It's good because it almost resembles Spiderhouse in the way that the atmosphere just doesn't quite make sense, which I like. It's bad because -- like Spiderhouse -- trying to have a coffee place and a bar ends up with a sort of dual personality. Pros: * Very good coffee, some of the best I've had * Excellent service, great atmosphere * The protein bowl they sell here wrecks every other version of it I've tried Cons: * It sort of changes identity over the course of time. Early on it's a nicely odd and yet relaxed, vaguely industrial coffee place. Giving this rating for the coffee shop aspect only, as I'd definitely bump the star rating if I were visiting Spokesman for a post-work brew or an easy lunch spot. If you're looking for a coffee shop to get some work done, my advice is to go elsewhere. Seating is on hard benches with tiny tables and nearly non-existent outlets. Music is LOUD to top it off, so either bring headphones or prepare to be blasted by tunes. I understand some coffee shops do this kind of stuff intentionally to encourage people not to loiter, but I do believe in buying multiple items to help a place out and I think the number of people who fall into my camp would offset the few a-holes who don't. Considering Austin is something like 3rd in cities with remote workers, I believe it'd behoove Spokesman to make some improvements to make the place a bit more worker-friendly. Until that happens, I'll continue my search for a spot that allows me to get work done while enjoying good coffee. read more

This review is more than just the stars. The coffee is five stars. Some of the best coffee in town is here. We had breakfast this trip, and that was disappointing. They couldn't heat the meat and cheese croissant. It was still okay, but warm would be better. The soyrizo / egg sandwich was put in a panini press, but the middle was still cool. The flavors were fine. It would be better to stick with cold pastries, rather than offer some that would be preferred warm, if they cannot be warmed properly. That being said, if you want great coffee, this is the place. We'll still be coming back. We haven't been there in the evenings for beer, but the place has some great art on the walls, and has a relaxed vibe. Check it out, just plan on breakfast somewhere else. read more

This is a cool coffee and beer spot. Parking sucks but the location is technically a warehouse. These are becoming popular. When you walk up the wall art catches your sight first. Walk in and immediately skim the menu for your choice of eye opening coffee and typical Austin beer. They didn't have any stouts which made me sad. They did have a Modelo and hotdog special for $5. Order and grab a seat. There aren't a bunch but enough to have a few people with you. This place is cool night and day. The beer is good, coffee is always needed, the food selection is minimal but that should be an issue. Restrooms are clean and for alllllll of this, I rate it 4 stars. The drinks were good and the service also, the ambience was not much to my taste. I'm a senior citizen and a writer.
