Old school sports card shop. Tables of boxes that you can thumb through. "....got it, got it, need it, got need it..." I need a couple of hours every time I go. Huge inventory, including a fair amount of older cards. Staff is friendly and informed. Pricing is very fair. I also highly recommend Berg's Smoked Meats or the Anchor Tavern for a meal while you are there. Belmar is a very nice town. Disaster. Let me first say that I feel for businesses who get slammed on yelp by needy a-holes just because they weren't treated like royalty. I am not one of these a-holes. I live in California. I have not been to the physical Sports Nut store in New Jersey. It may be wonderful. My experience was with their online store. This transaction - and the dozen or so subsequent interactions with their management - left a lot to be desired. Or should I say it left EVERYTHING to be desired because they did NOTHING right. So begins the story of Sports Nuts cards. Less a story of a disgruntled customer and more about a father and a son, a generational divide, and how the dream of running a sports collectibles store together went horribly wrong. On March 20, 2015 I ordered an autographed basketball card online, paid with my PayPal balance and got an email confirming my transaction. So far so good. The website said most orders ship out within 48 hours, so when two weeks rolled around and still no word, I decided to email to see what was up. Crickets... A few days later I called the number provided to see if this place even existed. That's right, the dreaded phone call, remnant of a bygone era, last resort for a desperate e-consumer. The Internet was invented for three reasons: 1) the rapid dissemination of information, 2) porn, and 3) not having to talk to people you don't have to. That one phone call turned into two, then three and before I knew it I had memorized the Sports Nut phone number. For two weeks out of my life, the people I had spoken to most were, my wife, my daughter, my boss and Ted from Sports Nut. To his credit, Ted did answer the phone each time. Sadly, with each conversation, I actually had less assurance that anything would ever be resolved. Enter the "son." I add the quotes because I'm not positive there is a son. The "son" in this narrative could just as easily be entirely figurative, Ted's way of casting aside the shame of his own shortcomings. Anyway, as it turned out, Ted was no use with anything electronic, be it Internet, email, tracking numbers, you name it. That's fine. Someone probably told him, "Ted, you need to go online. That's the future." Ted reluctantly agreed and evidently subcontracted that side of the business to the "son." Young and tech savvy with a passion for sports collectibles. What could go wrong? Apparently that passion of Ted's was not passed on to the younger generation. Trying to hide his disappointment, Ted apologized for his son's inability or disinterest in fulfilling the tasks to which he was assigned. It was the son's job to respond to emails. The son processed online orders, maintained the website, uploaded tracking numbers, and, if it came to it, issued refunds. I was promised all of these services on multiple occasions, and NOTHING was ever done. And it wasn't because they were too busy. We're not talking about a Walmart store on Black Friday. This was a brick-and-mortar suburban New Jersey baseball card shop in the 21st century on a weekday afternoon. I wouldn't be surprised if days went by when I was the only customer Ted talked to. I'm beginning to think my order was sabotaged so Ted would have someone to talk to every 2-3 days. So, in short, we have a dysfunctional management structure at Sports Nut. Ted runs the store but is wholly incapable of fulfilling even the most modest online task. These have been thrust upon junior, who appears disinterested in completing them. One day, I finally thought I had a breakthrough. I called again and this time Ted told me he thought the card I ordered was unavailable. Forget for a moment the ethical morass that is selling merchandise you don't actually possess. At this point, any news was welcome news. In fact, Ted told me his son had issued a refund long ago, problem solved. Ah, but had Ted possessed even a modicum of Internet savvy, he would know that as the Internet giveth, it also taketh away. The online world, while making it easy to access mountains of information at the click of a mouse, also makes it very difficult to lie about things when you fuck up. After virtually no effort on my part, I learned that no refund had been issued. As it now stands, it is April 16th, nearly a month has gone by and I have received neither card nor refund. It actually occurred to me that interest might be due to me if I ever got that refund. Out $38.50, PayPal has been notified and I'm hoping for a (relatively) swift resolution to this Internet nightmare. In the end, where does the fault lie? With Ted, for getting in over his head in an online world he couldn't comprehend? Or the son, for lacking either passion for the business or any sense of personal responsibility? One may never truly know, and it probably doesn't matter in the long run. I'll never waste my time with this place again and I suggest everyone else do the same. read more
