I want to start by mentioning that I'm not one to ever write reviews. I do this out of the willingness to contribute and say that this barbershop is top notch. It is a traditional barbershop with an old school vibe and my barber, Doug Fransen, was awesome and very accommodating. I have just recently started to grow out my hair a bit on the longer side enough to style it and he knew just the right way to touch it up without taking away from the texture. Where to start. I can appreciate the history of this barber shop and that is where the pleasantries have run out. A simple combover cut, low fade , textured top. Textured top was just lopping length off the top so combover length is gone. Low fade on the side is not even consistent as seen in the pictures. In and out in 10 minutes like I got in a losing fight with a weed whacker. Upon coming home first words out of the wife were "what the hell happened?" Worst cut of my life and time to break out the electric trimmer, burr it military boot camp length and start the growth again from scratch. read more

Simply great. First, they take appointments. Call ahead and pick your time. Minimize your wait time in the old fashioned barber shop. When I found out they take appointments and I wanted to give them a try, it was no problem. And I got seen exactly on time. So, let's go to the haircut itself. My old barber (Clayton) has been retired for almost two years now. I've moved around between various barbers and am getting tired of people who are overzealous with the clippers. In other words, I want a traditional, conservative guy's haircut that isn't a literal clip job or a scalping. And when I called Sportsman's and they made an appointment for me with Marcos, I had no idea what to expect. When I came in to Sportsman's, I saw an old fashioned barber shop. A little before my appointment, I ended up sitting down in Marcos's chair. We talked for a bit and I found out that he actually cuts my old barber's hair and that Marcos's brother used to be business partners with Clayton. Needless to say, I felt instantly relieved. Marcos said he could work with my hair. He's truly a master of both the clippers and the scissors. The neck shave with a REAL straight razor, hot shaving cream, hot towels, and a neck and scalp massage was perfect. Most importantly, my hair came out great. It looks professional and I've already gotten a couple of compliments. I am really hoping that Marcos continues barbering for a long time because I'm a happy customer. A REAL barber. I was about to get a haircut closer to UT when I heard there was a bomb threat on campus so I thought maybe I should head out farther for my haircut.... I ended up here at this, shall I say, unsual barber shop. How often does one see many mounted animal heads (see picts) on several walls of a barber shop? Well, maybe in Texas.... Also unusual was seeing the old timey barber working next to the old korean lady with the thick accent. I am surprised I have not reviewed this place! My boys and husband have been going here for years. They give great haircuts! And I like waiting too...it reminds me of going to the barber with my father when I was young. Everyone coming and going. Chatting it up. This is like a small town in a big city! Wow! I didn't know what to expect when I suddenly ran by this barber shop on my way to getting a quick haircut. As I usually do, when I walked in, I quickly scanned for two things: 1) the hairstyles and haircuts of the barbers themselves, and the haircuts being given to those customers sitting in the chairs. I thought on first sight everything looked good, they were older barbers than I'm used to, but the look of the entire shop implied they ran a good business. So I asked one of them how much for a haircut, to which he replied $17, after which he immediately explained what's all included in the haircut. I liked what I heard and sat down with one of the barbers to get this done. The barber took his time and I could tell that he was experienced. He cut it, then used a razor to edge up all around the border and behind my ears, then rubbed my head afterward with a very warm and soothing washcloth. I was impressed when he showed me in the mirror what he had done. It looked very good and I was happy with the results, which show in my pictures. Yes, there are deer head trophies all over the walls, but that didn't bother me. I just was glad to find a good barber shop at the last minute and that they did such a great job for $17. read more

Let's be fair: I've never gotten my hair cut here. Now, the reason is I can't get a seat. I've been here twice - still naively believing there is such a thing as a real barber shop out there - and each time it was like I had crashed a party without an invite. This is a clubby place. Since I can't assess the merits of the cuts themselves I can only say after coming twice, waiting twice only to have people who came after me get their chairs, I realized this is a old men's club. Don't write me hate mail: I'm an old man too, I thought I would qualify. Exceptional!!! Feels like home, always warm inviting environment with room for honest conversation mixed with a few laughs. Mikey, Marcos, and Jay the best at their trade, with special shoutout to Jay for letting me sit in the chair and do his thing. Marcos also makes any youngster feel comfortable (ie. my son's first haircut). Mikey also give and excellent cut and has been accommodating when I needed a 5min trip before a big work event or family outing. I was this close to closing my yelp account due to second thoughts about my prerogative as a sloppy freewriter laying down my judgmental fingers at local business establishments. But today, I'm a changed woman. And I'm writing a review for a barbershop! Why? I didn't even get the haircut! I guess I realized that reviews aren't about giving criticism or advice to businesses as much as it is about finding something special about a place and emphasizing these pearls for other consumers to experience... because someone else out there, I'm sure, is looking for what we have been looking for. This time, we were looking for Kim. Kim was our gracious host today. And i say gracious because she cut his hair with such eloquence and refinement... the kind of generosity and quality you feel from someone who loves your company.. or at least loves their work at that intensity. She is committed to her craft and her business and we saw that over and over again as she cut every line angle and every centimeter, delivering a perfect look that was clean and sharp. We have been to 6 barbers in the past 2 months and Kim sets a standard above all else. I can cut basic male hair, but when my boo goes fancy with his Don Draper super slick look, I just sit aside and learn from the professionals. Kim impressed me from start to finish, 30 minutes of watching this woman go from the gross chopping of old hair to refining the margins. I don't have a lot of hair, but a haircut with electric clippers and the #2 attachment is $15 excluding tip (I usually tip another $3). They shave the back of my neck and my sideburns with a straight razor, and they finish up with a warm damp towel on my scalp and my neck. I guess that's to wipe off any leftover hair and shaving cream but it feels really good! (It's tempting to ask how much the warm towel treatment costs by itself, but the barber is usually a guy, and I'm not that secure with my masculinity :-)). Anyway, I always look better when I leave than when I enter. The barbers are all friendly and professional. They're often busy on Saturday mornings. It's usually not busy on weekday mornings. I don't think I've ever been there in the afternoon. There is always a parking space. read more

If you like an old-school barber, you need look no further than Sportsman's. It's harder and harder to find a real barber and a real barbershop. This place fits both bills. Joe Sanchez has cut my hair for about 10yrs. He also has cut Coach Darrel Royal's hair since the late 60s. He has tons of vintage Longhorn player pics in his stall and loves to talk about all the great teams of the past. He always cuts my hair perfectly and is done in less than 15 minutes. I came here a few weeks ago and forgot to write a review. I must admit it I like it. The animal heads on the wall and the country feel gave me peace, but I also liked the Korean lady with an accent. I had a conversation with Mikey about school and he informed me that his son had graduated at Texas State University. My favorite thing about this shop is the straight razor(which I haven't found since I was in the Air Force) and the affordability. Great place, and the only place I plan on getting my haircuts. No more fantastic Sams or whatever the name of it is called in Walmart. I would advise those who are planning to come here to bring cash as they do not accept debit or credit which is fine with me I do not mind. Oh and I am not sure of their hours, but they are not open Sunday or Monday (I found that out the hard way lol) read more

A genuine Old Austin barbershop. The barbers are good guys who provide great cuts/shaves at reasonable prices. It's family-friendly, the TV is always tuned to a sporting event, and there's plenty of reading material if you have to wait. It's what all neighborhood barbershops should be. (P.s. - Don't let complaints about occasional waits for walk-ins give you pause. You can make an appointment, but if you don't, just ask how long the wait is when you walk in the door--they'll let you know. I'm come to the realization that only Korean ladies can cut my hair the way I like it. After moving away from my last barber (a Korean lady), I was in search of a new reliable barber. I've easily been to 5 other establishments that were more expensive than my last barber and they just weren't up to par. I didn't need a beer and a lounge chair, I just needed a good haircut. I was starting to get desperate until I found Sportsman's Barber Shop. It definitely had an unique feel when I stepped into the shop, with the mounted animal heads and hunting decor. I was a bit apprehensive due to my previous experiences, but Kim gave me a phenomenal cut! She's a really sweet lady and made me feel like I was in good hands. She took her time and made sure everything was perfect. I could tell she loves cutting/styling hair and it shows in the attention to detail in her work. In the end, she gave me a hot razor shave to top it off. It was one of the best haircuts I've had in a while, no frills, just a great cut for $17. I've finally found my new barber! read more

After hunting around for several years after my long-time barber Clayton had retired, I came across Wes O.'s review on this website. He, too, was a Clayton's orphan and he had found Sportsman's and Marcos. I had gone to Sportsman's for some time before patronizing Clayton Johnson, but my previous barber there had retired. I have no idea why I hadn't thought of returning to the Sportsman's, but I instead spent the time going to various national chains where my hair was sprayed with water for a wet cut, my face draped with a steamy towel, and a somewhat creepy neck massage was performed while hearing loud music in the background. I would say that Marcos is a very fine barber and has been able to get my hair looking great without the strange anomalies that seemed to present themselves after a haircut at the other institutions. Though I haven't been shorn by any of the other barbers working the place, judging by the haircuts I see leaving their chairs, all of these guys would do a good job. I must warn you, though, that if you prefer having someone with tattoos, purple hair and multiple body piercings trimming your hair, these barbers may not meet your requirements. Traditional would be one way to describe the Sportman's and its ambience could be described as "lived in", but it is a great place for a great cut. read more

I have gone to Sportsman's several times now and David has cut my hair. I have been extremely happy with his service. I have a beard as well. He has been extremely knowledgeable about how to instruct me to care for my beard. He also suggested several amazing products for my beard. After 4 months of using these products and taking David's advice my beard looks better than it ever has before. I get more compliments on my beard now than I ever have in the past.
