These folks appear to be general outfitters for outdoor activities in the area. Their office had a…read morelot of fly-fishing gear, for example. But we were here to see bears. We booked them through the cruise line to take us to see bears in the wild. First, the positives. The people were nice. It was a small outfit, but they had a mini-bus to get us at the dock and then had the plane waiting behind their office. Now the negatives. On the island (Chichagof Island) they were less organized. The van wasn't waiting for us, and when it did come they had to drop other folks off at a dock before our tour began. The people were still nice, but there seemed to be confusion about what time they were supposed to have met us. And while I understand that they can't guarantee bears, they should wait until bears are active. The guides told us that the salmon weren't running yet so the bears were more elusive. (So what were we doing out there?!) The salmon (and bears) become plentiful in late June, and into July. This had the potential to be totally awesome, but they were so eager to fill seats on their tour that they didn't consider that the bears weren't really out in force yet. If this had been in the middle of salmon season I could excuse the lack of bears since it's not really fair to hold them responsible for what nature does or doesn't do. But when they KNOW we're early, they shouldn't even offer the trip. It was really disappointing. I can't comment on their other outfitting activities. They may be outstanding. I think it's up to the buyer to verify if their activity of choice is really in-season or not. Don't assume they'll tell you before you sign-up. (Though, to be fair, since I signed up through the cruise line I have to put some of the blame on them for offering an excursion "out of season", so to speak.) If you are "in-season" with your activity, these folks did seem to be very nice and had a reasonable amount of equipment for fly fishing and cold weather in their office.

I was excited about my first float plane ride and looked forward to fishing for trout or salmon. What I didn't realize was that we would be fishing for near-dead pink (sockeye) salmon who had just finished spawning. They were densely lined up in the stream making it difficult to miss hooking something, offering virtually no resistance to being dragged into shore, then released to proceed with the dying process. Surely if I had been informed of how and what we were fishing for, I would have saved the over $400.00 it cost for approximately 3 hours of fishing. The best part of the trip was definitely the 15-20 minute ride in the float plane each way.

The food was great! Very tasty, unique, but not too unique, if you know what I mean. And lots of it! The accommodations were superb. I don't know if I've ever stayed anywhere with a better shower! You wouldn't think they would have really hot water and great water pressure at so remote a location, but they did. We drove up to the location to find it empty and were a little disheartened that maybe they were out doing an excursion themselves. We called and left a message and Paul called us back 2 mins later. As soon as we dropped anchor at a location Chris scoped out for us, I caught a HUUUGE halibut and the excursion only got better from there. For the remainder of the trip, every passenger continue to hook fish one after another and that continued until everyone was exhausted. I know catching fish is not guaranteed on any trip, but based on my own personal experience, combined with my research of other customers reviews; I would venture to guess your chances of catching a fish with him at the helm is as close to 100% as humanly possible. Capt Lucas kept us on top of the fish and moved spots when bites "went cold". In addition to Halibut (x5), we hooked up on Dusky Rockfish (x2) and Cod (x2). While catching fish, we enjoyed passing Humpback whales and got lucky enough to see a small pod of Orca passing thro Our boys (12yo and 8yo) thoroughly enjoyed it; very interested in picking up a fishing pole when we get home. Although it was only supposed to be a 3.5hr fishing trip, our guides extended it to ~5hrs to insure we got the full experience.

There were still a few salmon but, apparently, it was too late in the season for bear activity as we did not see a single bear. Our guide, Stu Mills, went out of his way during the 3.5 hour tour to drive around to spots where bears might be found. Still no bears. However, Stu is a native of Hoonah and he educated us with endless stories about his life, family, native culture, local plants and vegetation used for medicinal purposes (the Devil's club ointment really works!). While the bears were disappointing, Stu's expertise made the trip very much worthwhile.
