Good News: My 2004 Nomad VN1500 has a new engine. Rob at Sporttech, in San Jose, installed a 2003 VN1500P Mean Steak engine with 11200 miles in my bike. I bought the engine on Ebay and it came out of a salvaged bike in Georgia. Rob received the engine and had it installed on my bike with in 3 days. He did have to modify a few connections and swap a few parts from one engine to the other. The new engine shifts and runs much better than the old engine, which was always hard to get into second gear. 6 months ago, my friends and I attempted to ride from Pacific, to Atlantic, to Gulf of Mexico and then home with in two weeks. On the second day, just outside Oklahoma City, I blew a rod bearing. To say the least, my trip was over. Basically, my motorcycle trip became a U-Haul your "Bitch" home. Now you could say, "My Nomad has a bit of a Mean Streak". Thanks Rob & Raphael! You guys are the best You have the best turn around. I trust your judgement and your prices are more than fair. I have a lot more positive than negative but it's still neg. The owner and workers there are super chill. The shop is big, they get through stuff fairly quick. They also know their OEM stuff. All around I would have given them a 5. The only issues I had were price and shop advice given. Their per hour rate is not bad but they tend to run the labor over what it should be. Two other shops quoted me 30 min to 45min; Sporttech said it would take 1h30m. Its hard to judge on the advice because they would need to see the bike. But what they did advise me to do was somewhat silly. I'm pretty sure they would have been able to fix it no problem. To end this on a better note: this is a good shop. I started coming to Sporttech earlier this year, with my first bike. I haven't been to any other shop, so I can't give a comparison. However, I do know that when I first needed to get my bike towed from downtown San Jose, I called a bunch of shops and this was the only shopped that offered to come pick my bike up at a very reasonable price. Most other shops wouldn't even pick it up. So far, I've brought my bike to Sporttech 4 times. Each time, they have been honest up front about what work may need to be done, and have found the most economical way for me to replace any parts that needed replacing. This last time I brought my bike in when my bike stuttered on the freeway, they were nice enough to do a full check-up on my bike and did various tweaks here and there (such as straightening out my bent handlebars) and made sure it was good to go - without charging me for their time. (It turned out I was low on gas - it might have been a mismeasure on how much gas I put in the tank. The guys at Sporttech put in gas for me and took it for a ride to make sure everything was ok otherwise.) The mechanics here are super friendly and knowledgeable, and always give me safety advice when I go in, so I know they care about their customers' well-being. I highly recommend this shop. read more

Let me just say...if I could give these guys more stars I would. I came here because of the reviews on Yelp. I'd be very surprised if they would ever get a rating lower than 5-Stars. This shop understands customer service. From my initial conversations with Rafael to my superb service from Rob, the owner. I just purchased a 2001 Harley Road King, took it in to be serviced and checked from front to rear. I've only been sport biking, so I had very little knowledge about big bike cruisers (I think I'm at the stage to really enjoy a slower ride). I explained this to Rafael and Rob and they took tons of time showing me all the in-and-outs of the bike (their both Harley owners). Someone like myself, with very little mechanical knowledge, could be very intimidated in a shop of mechanics that have over 30+ years of experience, not these guys -- They're fantastic and so easy to talk to. They explained everything to me. In terms of price, very reasonable. I truly believe their in it for the relationship and not the quick buck. I bought a Kawasaki 650R from a fellow on CL who deals in used bikes. The bke seemed pretty good, but of course, I wanted to make some improvements, and have it checked out and serviced. I found Rob via these yelp reviews and went in. Happy to report that Rob and Joe had no problems installing my after market frame slders and slip on exhaust. Rob was kind enough to put my bike on the Dyno at n/c so we could measure the Db level of the Jardine slip on. Joe gave my bike the 64 point inspection and it passed w/o any "surprises"... I am a new rider (started riding last Fall) and unfortunately had a minor incident a few weeks ago where I dropped by bike going around a corner. After fixing up the minor broken bits, I needed someone knowledgable to make sure I didn't seriously damage my bike. Searched on Yelp and found Sporttech Cycles. Brought my bike in the last weekend, told them what happened and asked for a once-over (along with an oil change). Dave helped me out, explained what he was doing/looking at/concerned with, all the while explaining to me that dropping your bike is just something that happens. He was very cordial, informative and was just fun to talk to. As for the shop, it's exactly what you're looking for in a mechanic. The place isn't spotless by any means but it's clean; things were about as organized as they get for a place like this. It's pretty obvious these guys know what they're doing. I have to give these guys at Sporttech 5 stars, because they lived up to all of their other ratings from or motorcycle owners. I took my Suzuki C50t to them yesterday for an oil change. I ashed questions like what type of oil should I use and whats the top of line oil filter. I asked because I misplaced my owners manual. I asked because I only use top of the products on my other vehicles. The recommended K&N oil filter and conventional oil due to the low mileage of the bike. Now typically their oil change runs about $ 40 dollars. But if you want a K&N oil filter it will run you mote. K&N aren't cheap and they done carry that brand oil filter so that adds a little to pirce as well for them to go and get it from the parts store. These guys take their time when changing the oil to visually look over your bike to see if there any other issues that you should be aware of. I won't take my bike anywhere else ever again. read more

I just bought a rough "in my opinion" 2007 r6... of course I wanted it looked over, a full tune up, and valve adjustment if needed. My brother took his 08 r6 here and was very pleased. So of course I would bring mine. Rafael was very nice talking and explaining everything over the phone. Dropped it off with Andre, and Dave worked his magic. This place is so freaking awesome keeping me updated during every step, call backs answering all questions very happily not once was anybody rude. I called around atleast 5 shops and sporttech cycles covers the most in there tune ups than all other shops. Sporttech confirmed my bike was not serviced regularly changed all fluids, cleaned air filter, 10 valves were out of adjustment "7 shims later", after Dave finished he tried cranking over the bike but I had a weak battery and wouldn't start. He checked all the electrical and all checked out, except the old original battery. So bought a new battery. He also found my aluminum sprocket "-1 +3" was looking like a saw blade so i had them replace that with a more stock steel sprocket kit and new chain "I commute" Dave found that my blinker was not working due to previous owner not properly crimping the new flush mount signals and fix that too. Adjusted my clutch cable from the bottom. Noticed my rear brakes were glazed. Everybody here does there job awesomely, very friendly, great shop, I will definetly come back and recamend others to come here. I'm probably forgetting some things but all positive read more

After reading several reviews, I decided to take my SV650S to Sporttech for its 7,500 mile service and a brake inspection. Rob and his crew changed the plugs, coolant, oil, brake fluid, chain lube, and performed an inspection for under $300. They were very professional, kind, and courteous. Rob gave me a tour of his shop and it was very clean and clear that he had a lot of work. I left my bike there for a week to give him ample time. A lot of bike shops that I have been to are race oriented and make "normal" leisure riders like me annoyed. I appreciated the guys at Sporttech because they treated me, the leisure rider, with respect. Their high level of service gave me confidence in their work and inspired me to join Yelp to right this review. Thanks to a -local- mechanic's horrible follow through I had a chain break over in San Jose leaving my work (which is an hour from my house). Fluids were leaking and I couldn't shift thanks to a bent clutch pin from the snapped chain (among other things). Due to this I was forced to look up something online in a pinch. I made a call to Cycle Gear and was given a few suggestions that matched up what I'd read here on yelp so I felt pretty comfortable giving this place a try. Thank heavens I chose this place. The service was top notch and super fast. I was shown exactly what was wrong with my bike, how much everything would cost from the place they bought parts (same site I've used online), and when certain parts weren't available since they were out of production (I have a 1990 ZX750-F4) fabrication was an easy follow through solution for this place. I was contacted for everything regarding the repair, included in all the decisions as they came up and the price at the end was $300 cheaper than I quoted since the fabrication was cheaper than the OEM parts! All in all I was floored with the service provided here. I was told exactly what was wrong with my bike and the plan to fix it in less than 24 hours. The owner of this shop knew the ins and outs of my 21 year old "somewhat quirky" bike. Asking him questions about some of the stranger outdated things on my bike yielded instant knowledgeable answers. There was no "I'll get back to you on that" or "I think I might know". There was just recognition of the unusual features of my bike and how to tackle problems with it. I'm not usually fond of mechanics as I feel they always give you the short end of the stick and screw you for as much as they can get away with. I was impressed enough with these guys to make a yelp account and add to their reviews. Thats saying something for a shop nowhere close to my home. I will definitely be using this place again for future repair as trust is a hard thing for me to come by with mechanics. I would usually rather try and figure things out myself and save the money if it's a doable project at my skill level. Now, you know how I feel about Sporttech Cycles. The only thing left to do by comparison is give a single star to the local mechanic and explain exactly how bad they screwed me over (several times) for my second review. read more

They guys at Sporttechcycles are incredibly professional and went above and beyond to get my bike serviced, I showed up for a regular oil change and it turns out the crush washer was in bad shape and was not safe to finish the service with an old part that was going to leak after a while, they called to get the part and arranged to leave the part to be picked up after hours and even the owner rode all the way to mountain view to get me the part I needed. I always had my previous bike serviced there and will keep bringing my bike there, it is always great service, knowledgeable techs and price is great, you could not ask for more. Best shop ever.. they have helped me countless times without charging me over small issues. Any sort of issue at all - they are knowledgeable on and provide quick and easy fixes. Like an idiot, I tightened my clutch too tight and was worried I ruined something, as my friend kept saying to make it tighter if it wasn't starting properly. Lo and behold, it was the clutch switch not the actual clutch and it was screwing my acceleration/power up. They fixed it on the spot and told me about the issue, told me it cost 15 bucks or so to fix the switch and that the clutch must remain fairly loose or it will completely ruin and end up costing me hundreds. I never should have listened to my friend. Regardless, this shop is hands down the best - bar none. I will always return here for odds and ends or any major issue. I've been to motogio and spec1, both places were great - but SportTech seems to be more about actually helping than maximizing revenue which makes me a return customer for as long as I own a bike. Sold that 2002 R1 awhile back and got a 2005 R1. Really sweet! I haven't been back to Sporttech in awhile. But, I started getting starter problems. My battery was dying and I kept jumping it with my car. Which is a big mistake. You can jump your bike with a car battery a handful of times in an emergency case, but it will mess up your system! Lesson learned. Google it and find out yourself. So yeah, I like working on my own bike. I'm not a bike genius, but I don't wanna be a rider who doesn't know anything about my bike. When the starting problem happened. It would crank and wouldn't turn over. It would crank and drain the battery. I changed the battery, spark plugs, oil, cleaned out the filter, reprogrammed the power commander, took off the power commander, replaced the starter relay and had a stator ready to install. It worked for awhile after I replaced the relay, then the same things happened again. Tried different combo's... Googled every possible outcome and was about to take out the voltage meter and was like screw it! Threw in the towel and hit up Sporttech before Christmas. Looks like this is gonna be a tradition for me. Anyway, I hit up Raphael and made an appointment for the motorcycle pickup. Rob comes by and picks up my bike as scheduled. And they got it working the next working day after Christmas. They picked up my bike for a good price, it really depends on your location. I'm not the type of customer to argue and bargain too much. It was very fair and a good deal. I guess it was an easy fix and they only charged me diagnostic. This is my 2nd time with them and I'm really happy. I really like this shop and recommend it to all my friends. Safety is very important and I like riding my bike with peace of mind. Knowing my bike has been worked on by Sporttech makes me confident and about hitting those turns at top speed. But, what tops it off is the friendly customer service and the quality of their work. Was recomended by Road Rider to take my bike here. So, I bought a 06 Ninja 636 from a private seller who was his own "Master Mechanic". Let me just say he was NOT and brought my bike to the gents at Sporttech to get literally everything done (New Headlamp assembly, complete wiring and diagnosis, Vortex V3 sprocket kit ordered and installed, CRG levers ordered and installed, PCIII installed (dyno'd before & after), ordered and installed Michellin CT's, Oil change, and detailed]. Probably missed something but you get the point. Raphael and Joe are not only extremely knowledgeable in their craft, but they are AMAZING individuals. BEST SHOP! I move to N.California a few days ago and was looking for a shop to do valves adjustment . I checked a few places some from recommendations of friends and all was nice but they were asking between 270$-500$, some of them just for the valves adjustment without the carb adjustment . I got to Sporttech from yelp called and got Raphael on the phone nice guy explained all that's included and he added the carb adjustment, ALL FOR 200$!!!!! same day appointment bike was ready the day after and ahead of time. he saw a leak and made sure it is ok first with the seal that was on the bike so i wouldn't need to pay for an unnecessary replacement. They did everything i asked plus checked the bike for other things and adjusted THE chain with NO CHARGE. I will recommend these guys to everybody how wants his/her bike to be serviced to perfection and with full honesty and a fair price. read more

The best shop in San Jo, hands down. They do quality work, very meticulous. These guys know what they're doing. I can't think of anything bad to say about them. If I really had to try, the only thing I can think of is that service takes longer there, because of the individual attention paid to each customer. Just like a fine meal, quality can't be rushed. In this case, it's a *good* thing. The best restaurants usually have long waits. This is the motorcycle shop equivalent. Took my Harley there to get worked on and the guys there are very knowledgeable with over 20 yrs experience. So in short, it's a great shop with great staff. One thing I did do before arriving was call and spoke to the manager and gave him a heads up on what I was bringing, communication is important. I bought a 2009 crf 250x and the guy i bought it from lied saying he kept up on the maintenance and got a valve adjustment about a year ago. these guys got it to work after adjusting the valves but had to go down 6 sizes! so he never adjusted the valves and if it werent for these guys id had a busted bike. they really cared and helped me out big time! under 250 for everything and they know their stuff. highly recommend them! read more

I was referred to Sporttec from my dealer after picking up aftermarket slip-on exhaust. It was a slight adventure finding the place, but I was reeaally pleased with the overall process/experience.
