I always try to hit iconic and historic BBQ joints as I travel. Sprayberry's BBQ in Newnan is such a place. One of my favorite southern humorist, Lewis Grizzard often mentioned Sprayberry's in his books and columns. In business for 100 years, it truly is a part of Georgia BBQ history. As I usually do when I visit, I got the Lewis Grizzard special, a chopped pork sandwich, onion rings & Brunswick Stew. All tasted great. If you like a very thick, smooth consistency stew, you will likely enjoy their version. It was about 2:30 on a Wednesday afternoon, yet there were several other diners in the restaurant. The staff was pleasant, professional and accommodating, even coming outside and offering to take my picture as I was shooting pix of the location outside...Southern hospitality at its best. The interior includes several pictures from the restaurants and local celebrities who have dined there, including country music legend Alan Jackson & author Lewis Grizzard. Barbecue and sides were delicious. This is their original location and you can really tell. It's dingey and could really use some sprucing up. The server was a poorly trained high school girl who rushed us thru the whole meal and sat at the counter with her back to us eating her dinner. The dirty dishes were left sitting in front of us but we wanted to linger for conversation so, when I could not get her attention, I moved the dishes to an empty table myself. Beer and wine service would be nice too. A shame because the food is top notch. read more

Just for the onion rings. If I am anywhere close, I always stop in for the onion rings. They are made my favorite way with a light flour coating. As another reviewer stated, the rings were not crispy, but looking at past images, I do not think they ever were. For my taste, I like them. The rest of the meal is lacking in my opinion, but they have been doing it this way for 80+ years and are still in business. Their chopped bbq pork sandwich is very dry along with no seasoning or smoke flavor. The bbq sauce is vinegar based and does not really bring much to help the dryness or lack of flavor. The coleslaw is also vinegar based with a little sugar and oil. The service is always great. I will return. read more

On the short list of places that are Newnan staples and absolute institutions, Sprayberry's ranks very high, if not close to the top of that list! They have been slinging some of the best BBQ around for close to 100 years from this very spot located on Highway 29, just a mile or so from downtown Newnan. It's not just the fact that they have been operating for so long that makes the so important to Newnan, it is the history of the place and how it has remained fairly unchanged for decades! In addition, ole Alan Jackson was once a server at this joint before he hit it big, so for a Newnan fella, that is pretty cool! As a kid, Sprayberry's was a treat for the family and now as an adult, things haven't changed much in that regard as when I am visiting family in Newnan, I try to make a stop into Sprayberry's. It's in the name, which has certainly become synonymous with BBQ in the area and for good reason...it's delicious! Sprayberry's isn't a fancy place and they have never claimed to be. The food is served diner style with no fancy presentations or dinnerware. You ordered the food, and the food is what you get. Over the years I have had many things off the menu, but my absolute favorite is the Lewis Grizzard Special. This is a BBQ sandwich, Brunswick stew and onion rings, and it is absolute perfection! There are a few other things on the menu including burgers, fried fish, steak and chicken for those not in the BBQ mood. I haven't strayed too far from my LG over the years, but my Dad really enjoys the Aristocratic which is the same meal, but sub b-stew for steak fries. Another family favorite is the stuffed baked potato, this is my mom's go to as you put BBQ meat and cheese on a potato and you got her for life! Overall, Sprayberry's has a special place in my heart and belly. While the food may not be James Beard caliber BBQ, it is your good old fashioned simple southern BBQ, and for that...I am a lifelong fan! Side note: The onion rings (more like onion straws) on top of your Brunswick stew is a game changer. I've been here twice. The first time I just thought it was OK, so I came again to give it another chance. The first red flag should've been the service. Other tables seemed waited on quickly, but my server seemed nowhere to be found for quite a while. However, she was really friendly. Just took forever to get my drink, and order, etc, that I wished I had chosen a different table. You can sit where you'd like, and I wish I had a different table. Finally I received my order, and the chicken and pork were both super dry. Since I didn't have quick refills, it was tough to swallow. The Mac and cheese for my side wasn't very good. There were clumps of cheese on there and the taste was just OK. My favorite part was the baked beans. Those were very good! Out of what I'd eaten, that's what I'd order again! Although slow and nowhere to be found most of the time, the waitress was friendly and she did bring be out a soda to go! That appears to be very standard here -- others walked out with a to-go drink as well. I love having that! Sprayberry's Bar-B-Q has been around since 1926 -- almost 100 years! They have a fantastic track record, and there were a lot of customers there when I came, but the average customer age was probably in the 60's. The service was great; exactly what you'd want from a locally owned, small-town restaurant. Sweet, attentive, and genuine. The food, though, didn't match the quality of the service. It had been 47 years since I visited Sprayberry's and I was excited to renew the acquaintance. First the positives: the ambiance hasn't changed. Old Georgia pit barbecue stand still works. Our server was quick, efficient, and pleasant. But the food? Ugh. I had the Lewis Grizzard special (pork sandwich, Brunswick stew, and onion rings) and would not order any of them again. On the sandwich, it was a tale of two buns: the top was stale; the bottom was so saturated that you couldn't pick the sandwich up. The onion rings were oily and the breading would not stay on. But the Brunswick stew.... Imagine a scoop of Italian spaghetti sauce in a bowl. The stew was so homogenized that individual components were indistinguishable by either sight, taste, or texture. My husband ordered The Aristocrat...a pork BBQ sandwich, steak fries and onion rings. I had BBQed half chicken, sweet-sour slaw and onion rings. Portions were generous and everything was hot. My chicken was smoked, not BBQ'ed, and the skin was dry. Could not eat the wing. Getting past the over-cooked portion, the chicken was OK. Not particularly flavorful and with no sauce in sight. My slaw was great..vinegar based and sweetened with sweet pickles. Onion rings were generous and not heavily breaded, nor overcooked. My husband said his sandwich was tasty and generous. I'm simply amazed how few people have heard of the late Lewis Grizzard. He was a Southern Humorist, Columnist for the Atlanta Journal, Author of over a dozen books, and producer of ten Comedy Albums. Also surprising is how few have heard of Sprayberry's BBQ. They've only been slow cooking some of Georgia's best Pork for nearly a century. Located only a few miles from Lewis' home in Moreland, Georgia he was apparently a regular. So much so that his favorite meal of Chopped Pork Sandwich, Brunswick Stew, and Onion Rings has been enshrined on the Sprayberry's menu. The only fault I could find with my BBQ today was the Stew being woefully under seasoned. A liberal application of hot sauce soon corrected that situation. I know this is a favorite for many locals but I am just not a fan. Starting outside, there is a decent amount of parking but fills up fast around lunch. The building is old and could use some renovation but customer areas seem to be clean. Restrooms could use some TLC. The food is just not that good. The pork and beef have good flavor but are usually dry. Don't look to the sauce to make the dry beef better as it is a very thin vinegar based sauce. The fries and onion rings are very greasy. We should have known better, When you get out of your vehicle and walk up to a good Barbecue, your mouth should be watering by the time you get to the front door.from the smells coming from the building. But a Sprayberry's there are no smells, there is no wood outside of the building for smoking. However there is a great big barbecue pit up front where they must have smoked and cooked years ago. But that pit has not been touched in years. WORST EXCUSE FOR BARBECUE I HAVE EVER EATEN. IF I COULD GIVE 0 STARS I WOULD. But on a good note the place is very clean and service was good. It had been almost a year since i had been back in the south. When I arrived there was only one thing on my mind...Barbecue. Understand this, when you grow up in the south you have certain definitions of what barbecue should and should not be. Living in NYC for almost a year now I have yet to find a good barbecue place. That's not to say that there isn't any, it's just that it wouldn't have that same home style southern feel. It would be barbecue with duck confit or something else similar and equally missing the entire point. As you can imagine when I came home I had a craving for BBQ and I felt the need to track down some of the most authentic and old school style places around...I didn't have to look much further than Sprayberry's. I had sliced pork BBQ, with baked beans, split an order of onion rings, and of course the infamous Brunswick stew. This is what I had been telling my Yankee friends about for quite some time and usually they would just give me looks like "What the F%#@ are you talking about? Is it like a soup or something? I'm so confused!" But now I am vindicated thanks to Sprayberry's and have received my long awaited southern comfort food. Yeah maybe the sauce on the meat is a bit on the vinegary side...but that's how we southerners like it. As a warning, I may let nostalgia get in the way of this review. Sprayberry's Barbecue was the very first place that I ever had Carolina style pork barbecue. This was in 1993 and I have had barbecue in lots and lots of places since then, but Sprayberry's holds a special place in my heart. Sprayberry's Barbecue started in 1926. Although they opened a second location out by the Interstate in the 90's I still prefer to go to their original location on Jackson Street on the edge of old Newnan. Their specialty is chopped pork with a red vinegar sauce - I always ask for extra sauce on the side. They also have other meats available and a new mustard sauce, but I stuck with my old standby - a small barbecue plate that included chopped pork, Brunswick stew, pickles, and bread. Of course, you have to order sweet tea to go with it - completed with chipped ice instead of cubes. The tea has always been a little weaker than some other places, but it is consistent. The Brunswick Stew is unlike any other stew I have ever had anywhere, but unique is always good and I think this stew is delicious - it is pureed so you need to get past that, but still good. Today the plate was served quick and was hot with both the pork and stew being just like I remembered it. My server was a genteel older Southern lady who was very friendly. Perhaps it was my lucky day and the nostalgia gods were shining on me, but I did not find the reviews saying that Sprayberry's had slipped over the years to be accurate on this visit - just as awesome as I remember it.
