This is a typical Americanized Chinese restaurant, with about the same menu as most, but one big thing in its favor. The lunch specials are available SEVEN days a week. So on a weekend you don't have to overpay, as would be the case of all the other Chinese places I know. I don't know if this place is owned by the same people as the same-named place on 16th St. in Silver Spring. Total ripoff. Paid extra for larger amounts of meat. Ordered a pork, a chicken and a beef dish....almost no meat, at least two thirds of each tray was filled with rice. The "fried rice" was just steamed rice with some soy sauce sprinkled over it, not cooked properly. Forty Five Dollars for three trays of bad food. Solid takeout Chinese food. I am walking distance between three Chinese restaurants and this is my go to place.

I live in Chevy Chase, DC and have been looking for an alternative to Tian Tian Fang for quite some time. Unfortunately, Spring Garden is only better than Tian Tian Fang because it is significantly less expensive - nearly 30% cheaper, in fact. The food, however, is not better. I am really sorry to write this negative review for Spring Garden. We ordered on Christmas evening online. Thought the 1 hour wait was because they were overwhelmed and we were OK waiting. But after 1.5 hours, we were still waiting and tried to call the restaurant. After 3 calls in 15 minutes, we reached someone who said we certainly hadn't ordered, but then she sees she had missed our order in the email. OK, stuff happens, we'll wait. She said it would take 40 minutes to cook and work with delivery company. An hour later, no delivery and we call Spring Garden again. They pick up and say they sent it out, not their problem. No sorry for our delay, no offer to help us. We wait another 10 minutes. We try to call back, again and again -- and they don't pick up. 2+ hours after our planned dinner time, we started to prepare our own meal when of course the delivery guy shows up. If it wasn't Christmas, we would have rejected the meal and asked for our money back. But we were happy to have this saga resolved and I was hangry. Being hangry was the only reason we finished the meal. It really wasn't all that tasty, especially the chicken -- and certainly not worth the hassle and unpleasantness with the restaurant about our order. read more

In terms of Chinese "junk food" this was subpar. The food arrived warm (not hot), and the quality was not great. I ordered dumplings, which from all different restaurants are standardly plump and doughy- these were small and gummy. The ribs were ok, but not great- they were just dripping red sauce everywhere. I just moved into the neighborhood and was looking for a chinese delivery place. They were prompt and the entrees were delicious! We got the orange chicken and the garlic chicken and were very happy! I've been a customer for three years. The food is tasty, sure enough. But Spring Garden are shamefully stingy tightwads. Once, a friend and I ordered two separate orders and we both asked for a side of spicy oil. She gave us only one, saying one was for both of us to both dunk our food into (that's unsanitary). They have also tried to get away with not including napkins and plastic utensils for take out orders. Don't they realize that makes a good customer feel insulted? And the prices are higher than average. The portions are shrinking. They have cut back their hours. Closed Mondays and open only till 9:30 instead of 10:30. Recently, I arrived at 9:35 but the door had not yet been locked. Instead of greeting me, a good customer, she only said, "We're closed." NEVER AGAIN. read more

For someone who loves small family run Chinese carry-outs it pains me to do this review. However, I cannot find a way to give it more than one star. The wonton soup was like no other I have ever had--I am trying to be kind. They did take an unusually long time to cook the food, but the standard lo mein, ma po tofu, and chicken broccoli were not well prepared. I must admit that the style caters to non-Asian clientele. Got some take-out from here recently and it was really really good!! The ONLY reason I give it 4 stars is because we asked the lady on the phone how many wings come in the dinner and it sounded like she said "4" but we only got 3...so it really wasn't enough to fill you up. The Mumbo sauce that comes with the wings was BOMB...fried rice and egg roll was good too! They gave a huge serving of fried rice, small egg rolls, and then the wings. All-in-all we will be back for those wings and mumbo sauce! read more

It is generally good quality as far as Chinese takeout goes (although I will be the first to admit there are weeks it is noticeably better than others).My usual base order is -2 sesame chicken w/ white rice(rice included with every main dish) -2 eggrolls(literally the best eggrolls i have ever had, taste like they came out of a MickyD's fryer) I also usually order one or more of: -Wanton soup -beef lo mein (rice included) -Geneal Tso's Chicken (rice included) Instead of Sesame Chicken i used to order: -Orange Beef then got sick of it and switched to: -Orange Chicken (It must of been sold or gotten a new cook like 4-6 years ago because around that time the Orange Beef/Chicken went down hill and Sesame Chicken got a lot better. Very fast Free delivery!!! don't know what u are talking about 20-40min. I've never waited more than about 25min and thats usually on really busy weekends. It generally takes 10-20min for my food to arrive. with an average of under 15min. However I order from here a lot so the so the delivery guy knows the way to my house. Plus I am by no means a small tipper. So that may have some bearing on the situation. It actually got to the point that when called the person answering the phone knew my order. Depending on how long ago you last went there it not only changed ownership it changed restaurants. about 15years ago the store that Spring Garden is located in used to be "Friendship Hunan" which moved to Connecticut Ave. about 15years ago. Then Spring Garden moved in. Phone ordering tips: -Ask for chopsticks they don't always include these if u don't ask -tell them to include extra sauce if you are ordering a lot of food(sweet& sour, soys sauce, ect...) they tend to include the same amount no matter how much food you order. -Ask for extra fortune cookies. even though they are generous with them they are really good and it never hurts to have extra. -if you are paying cash figure out how much you want to tip the delivery guy before you pay. unless you pay with a ridiculously large bill he tends to assume the excess is his tip. So you must ask for your change or pay exactly what you want to tip in excess.(or maybe you will get a different delivery guy, I never have) P.S. Is any one troubled by the contemporary changes Spring Garden made. Like they changed the green menus w/ their logo that they have had since they opened to those new white ones that look atrocious and their website has been changed to match the new white menus. Ordered online first time this weekend. I was very disappointed. The delivery was relatively fast, but the delivery guy tried to make me pay again and pay a higher price. Once guy left, I discovered that they had forgotten to send ANY rice for what was a rather large order. There were at least 4 dishes that should hsve come with steamed rice. The actual food that was delivered was visually unappealing. The moo goo gai pan looked particularly icky, and was completely tasteless. Most of the dishes lacked any distinctive flavors, including both the hot n sour soup and egg drop soup. Sadly, most of the order ended up down the garbage disposal. read more

The delivery came fast, I live not too far away & Eat 24 sent a message stating the restaurant was very busy and would take a while to deliver, quoted an additional hour, but the food came within 30 minutes. Also, they deliver to your door, where as some drivers at Fortune Express and other Chinese delivery places require you to meet them out front or in lobby, so that's cool. Ordered the Shrimp & Broccoli after reading that the chicken may not be the best, and chicken noodle soup to meet the delivery minimum. The food was mediocre at best. The soup wasn't greasy (which I've experienced w/some Chinese spots) & comes with a bag of crunchy noodles which was nice, the portion for $1.75 is good. The Shrimp and Broccoli was a nice sized portion but tasted off. The outside of the shrimp had some weird mushy texture & the broccoli was tough, and the steamed rice a little hard. The basic traditional brown sauce also had an odd taste. Still, better than other Chinese spots I've ordered from in D.C. If you are new to the area or visiting I would just go with a different type of cuisine all together. Maybe Sushi or something. The Chinese delivery in DC is HURT. I've ordered basic takeout from each of the several Chinese spots that deliver to me, (from ones that throw organic in the title, to ones that have extensive menus w/ random American food offerings.) I have yet to find a place that makes edible fried rice...how in the world do you mess up a simple Chinese restaurant staple like fried rice? There is more than one way, I've learned. (same issue with mushy dense lomein). None of the restaurants offer consistently decent food w/o excessive grease paired with weird after tastes/textures. read more

It is not PF Chaings or fancy chinese food but it is what you expect for the prices and the lunch specials. I placed an order for lunch delivery (Pork chow fun and spring rolls) and it was absolutely horrible. Tasteless and almost stale. The egg rolls dont even come with a real dipping sauce, just a couple packets of sweet and sour. Gross. Maybe some of the other dishes fare better, but this place is definitely below average. Best Chinese food up and down Wisconsin Ave! I've tried several places along Wisconsin and hands down my favorite place for Chinese food. I have only ever order take-out from here. This used to be my go-to place because 1) it's cheap and 2) it's close so delivery is super fast. I love the thick, greasy American Chinese dumplings, which are great here (and is pretty much the only reason why I return). Their hot and sour soup is decent (could have more flavor), but so far everything else is terrible. I've had their lo mein (SOGGY, overcooked) and their general tso's tofu (way over-breaded and too sweet). All in all, I'm on the search for a new Chinese place when I want more than just soup and dumplings. read more

Spring Garden beats the other delivery/carryout Chinese places in the Tenleytown/AU Park area by a mile. The prices are comparable to places like Mayflower but the food is much better; the chicken and string beans tastes like actual chicken with actual string beans! Delivery times are insanely fast (15-30 minutes) compared to the 45 minutes to an hour you usually wait for a delivery order. Their chicken and corn soup is fantastic, the chicken with string beans is great as is the chicken with cashew nuts, and their beef lo mein is spot on. I've never been inside this restaurant, but I consistently take out from here and never had a problem. The chicken and broccoli is very good. I know it's hard to get decent Chinese take out in my area, but I thought I'd give Spring Garden a try. I ordered through the yelp app and it arrived in 20 minutes! That was the only good thing. The General Tso chicken had a nice sauce, but the chicken was extremely tough. We had to chew and chew and chew. Our second order was Kung Pao chicken which is generally hard to mess up. The chicken was very tender, BUT the dish had no flavor. At all. I tried the sauce alone. It was oily and it was brown. That sums it up. The dish also used zucchini as one of the vegetables. Odd. My family has Chinese food almost every Sunday as tradition. This is by far the best Chinese in DC and the owners are the best - Nana has known our family forever and has our order memorized.
