    Kao soi chicken
    Stuart M.

We recently visited Thailand where we had great food. Birdsong matches some of Thailand's best dishes bite for bite. We had khao soi, a dish with coconut milk and curry. The chicken was tender, and trimmed free from fat and gristle. Noodles , mustard greens, lime, and chilies round out the dish. The heat is there, but not overwhelming. Our other dish was massaman curry. The beef was melt in your mouth tender, with potatoes, onions, and peanuts to round out the. Again, just the right amount of heat. Finally, thai tea choux craquelin made a nice dessert closer. The cream puff dough adds texture, and the thai tea cream filling gives closing flavors without sugar. And it is so pretty to look at that you almost hesitate to take that first bite.

Check came to just under $100 for one small appetizer, two entrées and one dessert.

We were looking forward to eating at Birdsong, which has gotten great reviews. A few friends said that they went and loved it. But we thought only one of the four dishes we ordered was especially good, I wouldn't order the other three again. The Basil Shrimp - described as "Battered and golden fried" seemed more like tempura. I wouldn't have ordered if I knew. The Tom Yum soup was good, but very pricey at $25. For comparison, a similarly sized, likely an even larger entree Tom Yum soup at Bambu is $14. It had lots of noodles. We were sharing, and asked our server for recommendations- she suggested a second dish with the same noodles. Usually a server points out if diners are ordering two dishes with the same base ingredient (noodles) but our server actually suggested the second one. Seriously? And unfortunately, it was underwhelming, just blah. We left most of it. We got the chocolate crème brûlée, the presentation was very nice, with gilded peanuts on top. The taste was just so so, sweet but not much chocolate flavor. We liked the decor and the atmosphere was nice. We loved the bird mural. Service was mixed. Our server was friendly, but could have been more helpful. First, the recommendation for a second dish with the same noodles was not a good one. We asked if we could share everything, including the soup. We specifically asked if they could put it into bowls for us. They brought two bowls, but we had to wait a while for a spoon to divide it ourselves at the table. She ended up bringing us one of those small soup spoons that you often use for soup at Chinese restaurants. It was around the same size as a regular soup spoon. Apparently they didn't have anything that is more like a ladle, and it was not very useful for portioning out the soup. We thought we'd love this restaurant, but it was a miss for us tonight. Not only that, and this is on us, the only dish with any real nutrition or healthy ingredients was the soup. For one "small plate" appetizer, two entrées and one dessert, the total was just under $100.

Great decor in the dining room.

Birdsong is a new Thai spot in Chevy Chase, on a stretch that could sorely use a top notch dining experience, and based on my first visit, they nailed it. They are still in their "opening phase," which means a limited menu, but it just makes me more excited to see what they have in store down the line. To start, I have to compliment the space. They have a very inviting patio out front that looks like it is going to be so nice during the summer. They gave it a really fun and bright paint job. The interior is warm and welcoming with tons of wood and a standout multi-color mural on the wall. Nicely done all around. We sampled a couple cocktails to get things going, and they really impressed. These are as good as what you'll find at more cocktail focused bars, possibly the best mixed cocktails in this part of town. The uncle boonmee is an old fashioned variation with peanut and banana notes. With these flavors, it easily could have been overpowering or overly sweet, but it isn't - it is all balanced so perfectly, I loved it. My wife had the ha-ha-ha, a highball with pineapple infused mezcal and a coconut foam. If you want a refreshing sipper, this one is perfect. Lots of zero-proof cocktails, too, if that's your thing. The food hits the spot, too. I appreciate that they serve dishes that you are not going to find at every Thai restaurant in town. The tom yum shrimp dumplings were a perfect start, very fresh. The basil shrimp appetizer looked too good to pass up, too, so we ordered that one. You get large, perfectly battered, tasty bites of shrimp. The clear champ of this meal, though, was the khao soi, a coconut milk curry with egg noodles and fried chicken (you can get it with veggies or shrimp instead if you prefer). I was spooning up the sauce at the end I enjoyed it so much. It had just a hint of spice and great flavor. I will definitely be getting it again. We didn't save room for dessert, but it looked like most tables did. The table next to us was raving to their server about the chocolate donut holes. They did look good. I can't wait to go back and highly recommend trying them.

White curry is my favorite and always delicious.

White curry is so delicious and my favorite. Fried Egg salad is an add on. You may try!! Both are not too spicy.

Superb from start to finish! Our server, Ryan, was super informative as well. We ordered the Thai Fried Rice and shrimp dumplings, as well as the sweet and salty radish. The menu items were unique and everything we ate was perfectly balanced and executed. We ended with the chocolate mouse cheesecake and my party loved it. The drinks are also prepared by a Michelin Star mixologist. 10/10

If you like/love the Pisco Y Nazca location in DC, then you'll love the Bethesda location…read more For our first visit, we dropped by on an early Sunday afternoon and were impressed by the location and the food. Fortunately for us, the food was pretty much of the same high caliber as the food from the Pisco Y Nazca location in DC. For our dining pleasure, we went with our favorite dishes and beverages - Ají de Gallina, the Callejero ceviche, and of course a few pisco sours. Although some might consider the prices on paper to be high, I think the prices are fair in terms of portion sizes and quality of the food. Overall, I thought the service was fine. However, I was a little annoyed that we learned about the prix fixe brunch, which includes three courses for $34, after we placed our orders and started eating. While eating, I noticed that other folks at the bar where ordering from a different menu, and the server let me know that they were ordering from the brunch menu. So, I'm thinking that the other bartender forgot to give us both the brunch menu and regular menu when we sat down. Regarding parking, I do not think the restaurant has its own parking, but there is street parking and plenty of parking garages in the area. If you are not familiar with the area, you may want to look up some garages before heading out because the prices can range from a couple of bucks per hour to $7+ per hour. I have a feeling that we'll return to this location - mainly as a way to avoid dealing with the rigamarole of commuting to DC and dealing with DC-related traffic and shenanigans.

We were initially placed at a standing table, then relocated to a proper table when one opened up after about 30 minutes. It is a smidge loud, but still manageable, and I love the cozy, homey atmosphere created by the dim lighting, almost industrial architecture mixed with old fashioned bookshelves (which double as bathroom doors), and candles. They have a short menu of custom cocktails you can choose from, or you can also ask for any of the classics and/or tell the bartender what you typically enjoy and let them come up with a good fit. We tried a smattering of cocktails, including two from their menu, a whiskey sour, and a bee sting (which the bartender selected for us based on our general preferences). Each one was expertly crafted and extremely tasty, and made so much better by the ambiance.

She brought a glass of water and I decided on a glass of wine, pinot noir I think. The garlic bread and wine arrive quick. I'm enjoying the first piece of garlic bread and sipping the wine. Nice! The spaghetti and meatballs came out shortly thereafter. I was a disappointed with this part of the meal. Meatballs lacked flavor. No garlic, no parmesan cheese. The pasta was fine but the sauce was watery and didn't taste like gravy at all. I ate most of it, the garlic bread accenting the meal with the wine. I will probably go back. Dear Restaurant Owner,…read more My husband and I had been looking forward to dining at your restaurant for quite some time and finally had the opportunity to visit on Tuesday, June 2, before attending a concert nearby at 8:00 PM. We arrived at approximately 6:45 PM, were seated promptly, and were greeted by our server, Anna. She was pleasant; however, the service we received throughout the evening was extremely disappointing. We ordered drinks to start. My husband ordered a beer, and I ordered a rosé prosecco. When my drink arrived, it was visibly flat. I tasted it anyway and found it to be both warm and lacking carbonation. When I brought this to Anna's attention, she responded, "I noticed it looked flat too; I'll get you another one." Frankly, this was concerning. If she noticed the drink was not of acceptable quality, it should never have been served to a customer in the first place. We then ordered the mussels appetizer, which was excellent and one of the highlights of our visit. Shortly afterward, I ordered the swordfish special, and my husband ordered the shrimp po' boy. Neither dish would typically require an unusually long preparation time. Unfortunately, what followed was nearly an hour of waiting with no communication. Anna never checked on the status of our meals, nor did she provide any updates. Meanwhile, we watched multiple tables who were seated after us receive their food and complete their meals. By 7:45 PM, with our concert approaching, my husband suggested that we ask for our meals to be packed to go. It quickly became apparent that our entrees had not even been prepared. When Anna finally returned, she told us it would be "another five minutes," indicating that our meals had not yet been cooked despite being ordered nearly an hour earlier. At that point, we had no choice but to take the food to go so that we would not miss our concert. As a result, we ended up eating cold food later that evening. What made the experience particularly disappointing was that we had genuinely been excited to visit your restaurant. We had heard good things and were looking forward to a memorable dinner before our evening out. Instead, we left feeling overlooked and wondering what we had done to warrant such poor service and lack of attention. To my surprise, my husband--who is incredibly kind and non-confrontational--still left Anna a 20% tip, despite the fact that the service did not merit it. I am writing not to seek anything in return, but simply to make you aware of our experience. The quality of the mussels showed us that your kitchen is capable of producing excellent food. Unfortunately, the service and lack of communication overshadowed what should have been a wonderful evening. Thank you for taking the time to read this feedback. I hope it helps prevent future guests from having a similar experience. t
