Four of us dined here this past Wednesday. Soup of the day - tomato bisque - excellent Autumn salad - excellent Escargot - average Pate de Compagne - a very small serving of pate. Arrived very cold and consequently didn't a lot of flavor. Came with a surprisingly large amount of toasted baguette slices, lots of large cornichons and a nice side of salad. Duck breast appetizer - This was also served very cold. As a consequence the flabby skin and thin layer of fat was discarded. The temperature of the breast took away from what may have been a tasty dish. Very unfortunate. Rabbit sausage and leg in a sauce served over pasta was excellent. Pumpkin ice cream was very good as was the Montmorency cake. The daffodil cake was a bunch of whipped cream with very little cake - not well proportioned. We went to Spring Mill for our anniversary dinner and was surprised that they had a Restaurant Week, 3 course prix fixe menu special going on. Which, of course, we took advantage of. They sat us in a quiet alcove in the main dining room and promptly opened the bottle of wine we had brought (BYOB). For starters, my wife had the cheese and dried fruit plate, and I, the smoked salmon with dill and cucumber salad appetizer. For the main courses, I had the Beef filet steak Provencale and my wife, the grilled octopus ala Nicoise. The steak was cook perfectly, medium rare, and surprisingly, the octopus was so tender and not at all chewy. The accompanying sauces were both excellent. Finally, for dessert, we had ice cream with chocolate sauce, toasted almonds, whipped cream and a macaron. My wife had the salmon and pistachio genoise with creme fraiche, garnished with pistachios and powdered sugar. Overall, an excellent experience, service was great (thanks Mike), and the food very, very good. Will definitely go back again. read more

This truly is a fantastic restaurant. The setting is beautiful, and the food is equally as remarkable. They do French food just right here. The appetizers, mains, and desserts are all equally incredible. If this restaurant's location was within 10 minutes I'd dine here weekly, no exaggeration. Back to the SMC tonight for dinner and so glad to report they're back to their pre-COVID greatness! This is one of our favorite spots in the Western suburbs-the ambiance is truly like dining at a cozy restaurant in the French countryside. Our service was excellent, the restaurant was busy, however the staff still was taking all precautions including mask wearing and social distancing. The food was terrific-I had the pork chop which was prepared perfectly-cooked appropriately but still juicy and flavorful, and my companion had the rabbit (for the third time) which was tender and had an excellent sauce. Their dinner is wonderful, but wow they dropped the ball for Brunch. The wait was outrageous. The waiter hardly visited our table. I literally had to walk inside to grab the check because we were waiting for so long. The food was mediocre at best. I had the eggs Benedict and my eggs were over cooked. The seasoning was meh. My boyfriend had the steak and eggs and it was equally disappointing. My grandmother had the French toast and it was okay. We also ordered orange juice, which had a weird taste, and a coffee. Overall, our bill was $61 for terrible food. My grandma said the food and service deserves a 1 Star. The only reason I'm giving it a two is because dinner was amazing. Someone needs to reevaluate the brunch menu and brunch time employees. read more

Came here for brunch after newly moving to the area. It is a sweet and quaint atmosphere with friendly service and delicious food! We started with a refreshing crab salad and got the Croque Madame and eggs benedict which were very tasty with a home-cooked goodness, and finished off the meal with a latte and heavenly angelfood cake. The latte was aromatic, and the angelfood was light and airy with just the perfect amount of sweetness. Only thing I would improve is the parking situation. This restaurant was so outstanding I feel the need to write a review. My husband and I went here last night for my birthday and were absolutely blown away by everything. First of all the place is cozy and inviting. The staff is friendly and welcoming. We felt like we were in someone's home. Our waitress (Christine?) was so great and enjoyable to talk to. She helped us pick our food and had great advice. We ordered the escargot and chicken liver pate to start and the filet Mignon and rabbit as entrees. I loved that the menu was small. There were only a few options as entrees and I find that to be a sign of really good food. I also noticed there were vegetarian options too. We then finished with the chocolate mousse. Our family has celebrated birthdays, graduations and anniversaries at quaint and relaxing SMC for over a decade; prob 4-5/yr. Sadly, last night's experience has given me reason to reconsider. It's not a case of one mistake discounting years of perfection ; it's that other mistakes were set aside because the food was dependably delicious. Last night, both my spouse and my apps, entree, and dessert were sub par. All six plates are their standard menu items. Two examples: -The duck was so dry and old that it was noticeable before the first forkful, so service had to know what they were offering. Two bites were enough to confirm the freezer burn. My husband came home hungry and cooked dinner at 10 pm. - The mousse was so runny and tasteless that the cream on top was running into the pudding mix. The comped desserts didn't financially or otherwise make up for our effort and celebration being disrespected. I'll have to hear of big changes before returning. There are so many other solid restaurant choices nearby. read more

Seriously the perfect dinner! Amazing service with amazing ambiance! We got a few things that I can't pronounce. We started with the cheese and mousse board/ FANTASTIC! The honey on the plate was something else, and everything was homemade. Next up was the rabbit and noodles and the chicken pie. I've eaten quite a bit of French food, and nothing has ever come CLOSE to the pie here- perfectly sweet, flaky crispy crust enclosed around amazingly well seasoned, aromatic moist chicken. Update: the owner was gracious enough to reach out to us and did his part on resolving our issue stated below. Though our overall experience that night can't be changed, this has changed our overall opinion about the restaurant. We may give it another shot. We came here for Valentine's Day, they had a $90 5 course meal. Didn't say anything about automatic gratuity. The check came with 20% tips with the taxes included and the service was not good at all. For the cheese course it was said that sparkling wine would come and pair with the course, we could not get our servers attention for a solid 15-20 minutes, we were all but done with our cheese, and we finally got their attention and asked if the paired sparking wine was supposed to come, server was just surprised that we caught their "mistake", didn't apologize at all and later came back with the sparkling wine like nothing happened. Took forever to even just to refill a glass of water, and when the bill came of course gratuity was already included...very disappointed in this, we've been here before and liked this place a lot but this will likely be our last time. read more

Dinner, packed on Friday night for our 8:30 reservation. I was the guest of some friends who say this is their favorite restaurant- coming for BLD in one day! Cute atmosphere- warm friendly service- historic mill-store front that sold everything (back in the 1900's) little bits of nostalgia everywhere. Menu- simple-classic French - but I'm told the chef had his roots in south, leading him to explore Moroccan-spices and flavors in some of his dishes. We started classical pate plate- 3 types- wowed by all of them. (Sorry no pics) you need gluten free, they got that for you just ask the sweet wonderful servers. The menu is classic French with some twists - rabbit, duck, filet, fish some with classic French sauces, some served a top fall-winter vegetables for the season. I enjoyed the fish special - filet of branzino, crispy skin a top rutabaga, roasted mushrooms and purple potatoes. The flavors were to show the fish, which is perfect for branzino, ususally served whole. The crispy skin and creamy rutabaga mash was so good. Finished with none other than creme brûlée. Always BYOB (apparently) here in PA - so my friends treated me to a cab. I wish I could go back here and try everything. The rabbit is supposed to be the BEST! read more

My fiancée and I went here for my birthday dinner and maybe our expectations were high, but with the other reviews we read, along with the menu prices, we felt grounded in our high expectations. We each started with an appetizer- gazpacho with shrimp special and gravlax, essentially bagel and lox but with pumpernickel bread and enjoyed them throughly. There were some hiccups in the appetizer process- we were brought someone else's originally, then the shrimp wasn't served on the side with the gazpacho (I'm allergic but wanted to try it!!). When we received the appetizers, they were great- the portions were large and the house-cured smoked salmon was great. For our entrees, I ordered the braised short ribs and my fiancée had the haddock fish special. I'm all about not being rushed at a restaurant- believe me. But when our server came over to ask if we received our entrees yet, we knew something was up! We waited another 20+ minutes (total of ~40) before they came out. Clearly we were forgotten! When we received our meals, they were both hot and very tasty. The portions were quite generous too. We finished with the chocolate mousse dessert and that was fabulous. All in all, the menu is small and I wouldn't come back until they have a fall menu and I'd hope for more attentive service. I don't know why I have not reviewed this place a long time ago but I have been here three times recently and would like to thank Ezra and Michele for hosting us for our special event a few weeks ago. Our group was literally transported to Michele's home region of France, the Loire. The dinner was custom crafted and every dish was special and every dish paired perfectly with the Loire wines we brought. Michele was kind enough to speak to us and visited every table several times throughout the evening, educating us on the Loire and her cuisine. A magical night and the love and appreciation for what they do shows through. On other separate occasions I have dined here the food is honest classic bistro fare and the service is always impeccable, warm and friendly. It's BYOB which is even better. If you have been meaning to go (it's been open for 40 years!) you should go ASAP! read more

This place was adorable for a Friday evening date night. The atmosphere was so homey. First, service was spectacular. I really enjoyed everyone we interacted with. Not only that, everyone seemed happy to be there and had big smile on their faces throughout the night. The waitress was trained well and read off all the specials off the top of her head. She opened our bottle of wine (BYOB FYI) right away and poured. My least favorite part of the evening was our charcuterie plate. It was not what I was expecting at all. A lot of it was some kind of paste served with some bread. The fiance loved it, though, so maybe it was a preference thing. She nearly cleaned the plate. It was the first time I had rabbit but it was quite good. Sounds cliche but it tastes like chicken haha. The fiancee had the fish special and it was GREAT. My husband and I celebrated our 5 years togetherness by eating French for dinner Saturday night. I heard great things about this restaurant plus it's a BYO. Let me tell you that it did not disappoint. We walked into this charming and quaint farmhouse with such welcoming staff. Nathan is wonderful and as soon as he told us what the specials were that evening, we went with all of them. It was all of our favorites. I had started with gazpacho cold soup which had a touch of crab meat. It was amazing! Perfect amount of spice. My husband had the grilled octopus over salad. Of course we shared! We had gone to Greece two years ago and ate a lot of fresh and the most tender grilled octopus there. Since then we crave it, and Spring Mill Cafe duplicated Greece's perfectly grilled octopus. For main course I had the filet mignon with a side of mashed root vegetables which was tremendous. My filet was so tender and juicy. The mashed root vegetables was so creamy and delicious. My husband had the special which was the branzino fish over roasted summer vegetables. That fish was cooked perfectly and served without any bones! It came with a side of cauliflower but we are not crazy about that vegetable. Nathan suggested sautéed kale with shallots and that was delicious! We very much enjoyed our meal with a nice cold bottle of Pinot Grigio. It was a five star dinner and experience. We ended with their heavenly cheesecake, recommended by Nathan. For a special occasion, we took a break from the usual fast casual take out spots. I wasn't sure how "finer" dining would work out in to-go containers, but I was pleasantly surprised. I ordered the pork chop, which was cooked really nicely and was still moist when I cut into it at home. The sauce was very tasty as well - sweet and savory. We also had a side of brussel sprouts, but they were a little under for my preference. I was impressed with the dessert. We had: 1) chocolate mousse with whipped cream delivered in a cup - solid choice 2) almond flour orange cake - lovely flavor and soft fluffy texture. It came topped with candied orange peel and a side of vanilla ice cream in a separate cup. I really liked the cake overall and would order again BUT the batter was not well-mixed. Towards the edge of the slice, I started finding clumps of baking soda, first noticed by the overwhelming saltiness that started pervading the last few bites. That was unfortunate. 3) macarons - a variety of 6 with a little whipped cream. They were okay...would not order again because I liked the first two desserts better Although the menu doesn't indicate allergens, the restaurant is very gluten-free friendly. My husband called ahead to check and was told the chef personally understood gluten free diets. That explains the number of available gluten-free desserts and entrees! We held our micro wedding at Spring Mill Cafe at the end of October. Every aspect was absolutely perfect. The location is breathtaking and the food...unbelievable. Ezra was amazing and helped us make sure everything went smoothly the weeks leading up. Both Peter and Ezra were on sight the day of and helped us with every minor detail, taking all the stress away. I cannot recommend Spring Mill Cafe more for your wedding or even just dinner! Included in our package was a cake from The Frosted Fox and it was to die for! Went here for my second meal. The first time I was here for dinner and had one of the best cassoulets. Today we came for lunch and I had the smoked salmon cucumber sandwich with goat cheese. My wife had the steak sandwich. I really enjoyed my sandwich. I was the right balance of salmon with goat cheese - yummy. My wife didn't like her sandwich as much because there was too much horseradish on it. It was hard to taste the blue cheese because the horseradish overpowered that taste. We ordered the apple bread pudding with praline ice cream and the chocolate mousse. The apple bread pudding was very dense but very tasty with the ice cream. It doesn't make me happy to give three stars to this restaurant. I have been coming here for probably thirty years plus. While I never felt the food was top notch, it has certainly fallen in quality. I have always loved this restaurant from the ambience to the BYOB policy to the French style accented with Moroccan and Asian dishes. I have always loved to bring a nice bottle (or two) of good French wine and enjoy the night. However, each time I have been recently the food has been subpar. I recently had escargot that was flavored well but was tough and I think there were 6 of them on the plate (which is absurd for the cost). I also had the cassoulet in which the sausage was dry, the duck confit was tough and the dish had little flavor. I wish I could give a better review because I've always loved the Spring Mill Cafe. I wish there were more restaurants like this. Especially if we could replace a few of the over used Italian concepts around the area. Honestly, the three stars is pushing it and generous at that. We dined on a Thursday night , which was delightfully crowded. In a beautiful setting inside Spring Mill has been thriving since 1979 !! Issac a Temple university student who was our waiter . made the experience wonderful. Byob, French pates, trout almandine, Rabbit etc Everting on the menu was prepared to perfection.
