We had already made the trip to Bonnie Springs, so we stopped here as well since it's literally a mile down the road. When you first pull into the park, there is a giant lawn where people were having picnics and playing football and bocce ball. The ranch house is just past the lawns and serves as the Visitor's Center and museum. The ranch house was owned by Vera Krupp and later Howard Hughes, and you can walk around and see their furniture and a few other possessions. The docent in the Visitor's Center was so sweet and friendly and was happy to answer questions. We watched a 10 minute video about the ranch which provided a lot of background information that helped us appreciate the history of the ranch more. We missed the walking tour, however, while we were there. From the Visitor's Center, we took the walk up to Lake Harriet. Living in Vegas, it's easy to forget how beautiful the desert is until it's right there in your face screaming "Look at me! Seriously, I'm super amazing!" The views made me want to hike a bit, but the 113 degree weather put those plans on hold. I will definitely be back when the weather cools down to go hiking and maybe have a picnic. If you're looking for a place with views like Red Rock Park but without the crowds, then check out Spring Mountain Ranch. We paid $7 per car, and dogs are allowed at the park. read more

It has a gorgeous pond, around it are several trails looping into the mountain sides, wonderful for hiking and casual walking, while admiring a great variety of flowering plants, cacti, yacca... birds, tortoises, insects. One can easily hike 1 to 4+ miles around. About 100yards from that gorgeous pond are a huge, comfortable pavilion and another large fenced in area, shaded by trees and brushes, nice and cool for picnics and activities. The small historical museum features a famous cabin that comes with a "Secret Chamber"! Furthermore, there is also an attractive amphitheatre with a large natural grass lawn, which offers popular plays in the summer evenings from May through September (~$20pp). This little gem of a destination is just 4 miles south of Red Rock Canyon and just minutes away from the hustle and bustle of the Strip. While it doesn't quite have the scenic view of the red canyon, you do get a peaceful retreat with some excellent history behind it without all of the crowds found at Red Rock (as we drove out to Spring Mountain, we were the only car of 10 that did not turn off to Red Rock). The entrance fee is $5 (or $50 for a yearly pass) for a regular car (more or less if you have a bike or bus). It is a short drive into the ranch to a fairly established property that has many different facilities. Included are a nice park area that can be used for various functions, decent restroom facilities nearby (nice to have when out in the desert), a muesum of sorts that was owned by Howard Hughes at one point and many different buildings that date from the 1930's. West of the ranch is a small lake which at this time was almost dry...a few ducks and turtles swam through the last bits of the lake. When it is full it is much nicer to look at, but at this time it was a bit of an eyesore. As you continue around it you head into Sandstone Canyon which is a moderate uphill walk. As we had my 4-year-old, we only went a half-mile in before turning back (we know we'll be back here so it was fine to turn around). In the museum there was a list of events that include night-time walks into the Canyon, special events during Christmas, Halloween and Easter and a Civil War re-enactment in November. To get away for a few hours or have a nice little family get together, look into checking out Spring Mountain Ranch. read more

This place was absolutely AMAZING, and the highlight of my visit to Vegas, of all things. I have a feeling that Spring Mountain gets overlooked more than once - because it's not on the Strip. But you're doing yourself a major disservice if you DON'T stop here. This place is a nature lover's paradise. Not only are there picnic areas, the ranch house, and wild creatures about, but the best part of all - hiking up well worn paths and seeing the beauty of the rocks up close and personal. My husband and I actually were so much into hiking the trails that we went off the beaten path a little and were standing in one of the gorges - oh, my, God. It was absolutely gorgeous, breath-taking, and gave me a brand new appreciation for nature. Lake Harriet was awesome. All kinds of water fowl there, doing what they do. I watched them for what I know seemed like hours. A word of caution: be careful if you're going a bit off of the pathways. Really easy to get lost, and if my husband hadn't known how to get back, we'd probably still be out there. I do NOT recommend bringing the kids on these trails - there were some VERY steep areas that a child just cannot navigate. My husband and I had a bit of trouble climbing in some areas. But, oh, was it WORTH it!!! Also: toward the end of the trails (there'll be signs warning you not to go further), there are a LOT of bugs. I mean, a lot. So bring repellent or something, because they WILL land on you. Sunblock. Bring it. That Nevada weather might feel okay, but the sun is MEGA-STRONG out there. You WILL get burned, and quickly. I have never had such a good time as I did here. Wholeheartedly recommended. Worth three times the entrance fee! The park service lady was also a sweetheart. read more

Any excuse to play outdoors and I am all in. I was introduced to SMRSP while going on a field trip with my class. What an oasis out here in Red Rock. I was so thrilled that I had to come out the next weekend to explore without 100 children by my side. It is a bit of a drive from the city for most and the entrance fee may be a deterrent for some, but I would say that it is totally worth it. There are various trails to walk along and the grassy tree lined area is enough for celebration. I saw people picnicking, napping, playing catch, BBQing, etc. The short hike up to Lake Harriet is worth it as well. Stay quiet and out of the water and you may see waterfowl enjoying the lake as their home. I have liked the park on Facebook which is great because it keeps you up to date on all the events they hold out here such as: 5ks, Easter Egg hunts, yoga, night hikes, movie nights, etc. They do close early so plan accordingly. There are flushing bathrooms that are near the grass area so that is a big plus. Dogs are welcome on a leash. There is a lot of history to the park so stop by the museum to learn more about it. Park rangers were plenty on the days that I visited to help answer any questions or concerns and to keep you safe during your visit. read more

A lush Ranch with green grass and a lake in the middle of the desert. Located a short 15 mile drive from the strip is Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. This is a pleasant change from the concrete and light polluted jungle of vegas. A great spot to bring the kids or just get away from the craziness of the city. The elevation over here is 3,800ft which leads to a 10-15 degree drop in temperatures. The park offers a summer theater, historical buildings, Guided tours both day and night, picnic areas and bbq pits, nature studies, high elevation wildlife including deer, hiking trails around Lake Harriet. This is a very photogenic spot so please bring your camera for some great landscape shots. This area is located a few miles from Redrock so if your;e feeling really adventurous and get an early start you can check out both parks in one day. read more

Nature plus escaping the brutal heat of Vegas? Need I explain my love for Spring Mountain Ranch State Park anymore? I had never heard of SMRSP before attending Fiddler on the Roof a few months back. It only took a half hour drive and a ten degree temperature drop, but I knew then that I was smitten. Not only was I content with the musical, but the scenery was gorgeous. Summer nights with a picnic, wine, and culture are what life should be about. Also, something about those distant mountain formations and burros get to me. A few weeks later, I went on a picnic/hike with one of my coworkers. The pond area provided such a serene backdrop to some banh mi and good conversation. We had enough time to hike a bit towards the mountains. Easy enough hike, but I couldn't have been more content. On the way back, you pass through a pasture and some historic farmhouses. For some reason I kept thinking "Diana, I have a feeling we're not in Vegas anymore." Another half hour drive, I grinned and thought I could be any more wrong. read more

Spring Mountain Ranch State Park is a beautiful 520 acre park in the Red Rock Conservation area about 20 miles west of Las Vegas down the road from the town of Blue Diamond on Hwy 159. This is another great example that there are so many places near L.V. to explore the natural beauty this state has to offer and escape the hustle and bustle of Las Vegas. The park is 1 mile north of Bonnie Springs, and being a state park requires an entry fee. $9 for non residents and $7 for Nevada residents. The park is full of natural beauty. Located at 3800 feet in elevation it is usually cooler than in town. The road winds up to the parking area, and this leads to a large grassy meadow surrounded by large mature trees, bbq grills and picnic tables along with restrooms on property. Very nice. The property is backed up by the Spring Mt. Ranch and Red Rock which creates stunning vistas behind the park. There is the main house/ranch that is still on site. It has a pretty interesting history owned by several people through the years including Howard Hughes at one time. You can tour the house and it is furnished and has many pictures, artifacts etc from its history of owners. Actually very interesting. There is a small gift shop on property with such things as cactus agave jelly and rattlesnake shaped coffee cups. One of which is sitting in my cabinet, from when my wife bought one years ago during our first visit. There are also a few hiking trails in the park that lead back toward the mountains, and one trail that leads to a small lake. Very pretty. Overall a nice place to spend an afternoon for a hike or picnic or bbq. And get away from the city and enjoy Nevada's natural beauty. One more tip there is also a Summer Theater that runs usually June-Sept. And offers different plays, some of them Broadway hits. They are held in the evenings and you bring a blanket and food and sit out on the grass lawn and watch the show. Nice way to watch a play. Check this State Park out!! read more

Such a great place to take the family for a low key theater experience. Get here early though so that you get decent parking and a prime spot. If you bring chairs and blankets it's best to scout a place on the far left so you can set chairs up along the walkway and blankets for the kids in front. They sell chairs but only for chair only section on the right. Concession stand is good but I love that you can bring your own picnic dinner. read more

What a beautiful gem this place is. Not only is it filled with beautiful trails and history, but it's a quiet reprieve from the rest of the area. The entrance fee is $10 which is a small price to pay, I almost wish we had seen a donation box, we would've put in more money. We didn't know what to expect coming here but they have some historic buildings, a theatre, and some nice walking paths. We went on one of the walking paths which was very level and nice for anyone afraid of heights. Unlike red rock where you can do what you want, you do have to stay on the trails here. This place is dog friendly and our pup Bruce loved it but there were plenty of kids on the trails. What we didn't appreciate were all of the people who had their dogs off leash and let them do what they want (bark and nip at my dog) which we didn't appreciate, but that has nothing to do with how beautiful this area is. read more

We were absolutely excited about this place! There is a $7 entrance fee for those with Nevada plates. $10 otherwise. Picnic areas with open field to fly a kite, throw a football, etc... Burros walking, running, and burro-playing (horseplaying...just felt odd to have written horseplaying. Lol) in field alone driveway. They have a few trails you can trek on which are very family friendly. Nothing rigorous at all. Great closeup view of the nearby mountains. I never thought seeing a mountain for just rock could be so beautiful and majestic. Growing up, mountains I'm accustomed to looking at are those covered in greenery. There's even a lake that have benches where you can to embrace. It's literally everything you could want in a hike in one. Tiny..tiny...waterfall that rolls into the lake, an easy trail, view of the mountains, cottontail and squirrels hopping around, cows, burros, what more could you ask for a day away from the city. Great place to take the kids to run around and be kids. There's an old farmhouse turned museum that you may enter without cost. On another trail, there's even the Graves of family members who once lived on the property so not only is it very scenic, it also has history. Highly recommend. Definitely kid friendly. If you plan on hiking, keep the strollers folded in the trunk. read more

Lucky for us, Red Rock was closed due to a rainstorm flooding up the roads. So we ended up going further down the road. So happy we did. Found Spring Mountain Ranch and ended up loving it. Didn't get to explore the whole park, because the storm became a downpour. We weren't properly dressed for rain, wearing dresses. What I love about this park, is how beautiful it is. Simply breathtaking. A wonderful back drop for a wedding. Massive mountain sides, green grass, a pond in the back. Check out the ranch house, they offer free tours. Fun fact, this place used to be run by the Howard Huges company. I really can't wait to go back here to walk the trails I couldn't on my last trip. read more

The park rangers love to write 600$ tickets for stepping off the trail. Just paid $500 for two tickets for me and my spouse for simply walking down to ash creek and following the path that leads down there. The park ranger was very rude. I have been going out to spring mountain ranch for 30 years with no issues and now suddenly it's an issue to walk in nature even though the trail leads through the creek. I will not be going to this place again and will make sure everyone on social media knows about this trap for money. Watch out for Ranger Rick! read more

This is a nice get away from Las Vegas. It's not too far away, yet it is far enough away. You can come here on a weekend to picnic, BBQ, and take in the sights. If you come in early spring, you can even feel as though you are not in the middle of the Nevada desert. There is a large grass area with trees, benches, and BBQ pits. There is also a lake, a few small hiking trails, the Ash Grove, and of course, the historic ranch house (once owned by Howard Hughes!). This past weekend, although very windy, was lovely up at Spring Mountain Ranch. My fiance and I took our engagement pictures here. It is a lovely photo spot with many places to take interesting, picturesque photos. We staged pictures by the ranch house, the old wooden houses, the lake, and a few in the grassy field. They turned out lively because of the wind. I wasn't very happy to begin with because my hair was just a mess, but after viewing the pictures, it makes them seem much more alive. :) The only thing is the poop! Yes. All over the grassy field there is a lot of poo poo. I almost stepped in some because I wore heels for the photo shoot, but took them off when walking in the grass. There is a grassy field that has restrooms with running water. There are about 10 tables with bbq's on the outside of the grassy area. It is a great place that is only 30 mins from the strip. The rangers follow you everywhere you go in this ranch for no reason! Too many rules and citations if you don't obey! You have to pay a fee to get in for one day access ONLY! Came here around noon time on Sunday for a friend's baby-q. The pavilion was neat and I love this layout for the bbq. There were locked porter potties outside of the restroom area and the restrooms did not flush unfortunately. Wild burrows were fun to watch just grazing away under the sun. There are many signs warning you not to feed the burrows or else it will be $500 fine. The entrance fee is $7 and this place gets pretty popular on Sundays for family picnics too. read more

Right next door to Red Rock Canyon, and Bonnie Springs - you will find a scenic pasture to take BBQ, picnic, take photos, enjoy the weather while feeling away from the hustle and bustle of the city of Las Vegas. There are little hiking trails, I would it rate it brisk, moderate. I had the little guy and hubby so we walked to the little lake area. There is a map, and info upon the area, and also seating areas around the lake. It was nice to take in the area, and surroundings of the desert and mountains. Now that Bonnie Springs has closed, we stopped by Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. We were so surprised how wonderful this park is. The grounds are meticulously kept and the main ranch house is packed full of history! So much to learn and the staff made it easy to understand the story of the house and answered all our questions. Unfortunately the gift shop was closed for inventory, but that only gives us an excuse to come back very soon. Overall, this is a fantastic day trip destination. As for the entry fee, we will be buying a yearly pass, which is very reasonable. Also we really appreciated the very friendly security staff who made us feel safe and even chatted with us about the ranch's history. One note: For something to eat, you should bring a picnic, because are no food offerings here ... or just drive a bit further south on the main highway to the town of Blue Diamond and eat at the Cottonwood Station Cafe... so wonderful! read more

So i decided to take my nephews here this morning since they havent been. Got to the front gate where they collect your $10 entrance fee per car. As soon as we approached the booth we were greated by a note that says "self pay... and drop your pre-paid envelope here". Nobody was at the booth 30mins after they opened. A couple of problems we ran into: first we didnt know where the "envelopes" they were refering to were. If they were there, they were not near the note nor the drop box. Secondly: my brother didnt bring cash(we brought 2 trucks) and i only had a $50 cash with me. Nowhere on their website says anything about this. It never said bring cash, exact amount to drop in the box. So given the situation we decided to go ahead and enter hoping that there was another booth or person inside where we could pay. As soon as we parked our cars, an attendant in a truck aproached us and asked us if we paid. We told him the situation that we didnt see the envelopes, cash issues and so on. And that we were unsure of what to do. He then went ahead and told us, yeah i'll charge you guys a $10 fee per car(equals $40 for the two trucks) we wanted to pay him the fee for the two vehicles hoping that he would understand that it was a total misunderstanding and maybe not charge us the "not paying in the front, double the price fee". Mind you, there were only five of us and could had EASILY fit in one car, but money wasnt an issue if it'd help the place. But this guy so didnt care and didnt want to hear it! I was soo annoyed by this guy, who probably should have been at the gate collecting payments, with his power trip attitude that i said "nah man, we dont need to come here. We're leaving.".... This is the second time i came bringing more people. so many people i talk to doesnt know about this place. Its spread of the mouth. There was one visitor there when we arrived, same the last time i visited. Now you lost us as customers and everyone else i wont be referring to this place. Good job dude! Ps: lake is dry. Nowhere really to hike. Nothing special . save your ten bucks, hike the many trails at redrock for free, then buy yourself some brunch with that 10bucks! read more

Spring Mountain Ranch is a beautiful place nestled between mountain and open desert. Basically if you go past Red Rock, there is a road that loops to other places and then turns into Blue Diamond. If you've seen and done with Red Rock...wait, there's more out there so keep driving! This used to be a settlers camp in the 1800's, and the little red ranch home used to be owned by Vera Krupp and then Howard Hughes. Other than the ranch home, and open picnic space, there are trails in the area and one goes up to a small lake resovoir that supplies water to this place which made it a ideal settlement before it was a state park. There are also horses or cows often grazing in one of the enclosed greenery. There is one cow in particular that loves everyone and wants to be paid attention to. Tours of the home happen daily, but I am not sure of the time as it wasn't prominently posted that I noticed. They do living history demonstrations here where they depict the life of early settlers and pioneering. There's also outdoor shows here, called the Super Summer Theater. Their calendar is posted online but expect musical acts like a Jazz tribute or musicals like Spamalot. If you want a gorgeous outside area, you can reserve and rent out picnic/event space too. I came here on a whim with my boyfriend on our first anniversary. We were exploring and ended up having a picnic, taking pictures with our Holgas, and walking on the various hiking pathways. Since then it's been one of my favorite quick "getaways" from the city. Most recently we decided to come out here for some anniversary photos a friend of ours took for us. We're not picture people so we figured we should try to have at least a set of good photos of us yearly. What I didn't know was the boyfriend was going to propose in the middle of the photoshoot! This place was always a spot I liked; Quiet outdoors, but with nice shade from direct sun with the mountains there that makes you feel like you aren't in Vegas. Located in the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, Super Summer Theatre is more than a show, it is an experience. This outdoor venue, just 10 miles out of Las Vegas, is 10 degrees cooler than the city. In the fall, bring a light jacket, pack a picnic dinner and experience the outdoors with your family and friends in our meadow prior to the performance. As the sun goes down, the curtain goes up and patrons can settle in for some great theatre under the stars. Meadow seating is first come first seated. The meadow is separated into two sections. The chair section is on the south side of the meadow. People are allowed to bring their own chairs to the performance or rent a chair for one dollar. This is a great outdoor experience with great value. If you order tickets online it is $12.95 per ticket and in person it is $20. You can check out the play schedule online. Get there early for a better parking space and a great spot near the front near the stage. I saw Arsenic and Old Lace. The performance of the cast was great and the stage set was well built. A true gem for a quick get away from the city! Admission is $10 ($7 with NV ID) per car. We had a great time hiking here and visiting with Penelope, the cow. The lake area is really beautiful and there's plenty of ducks to watch (you aren't allowed in the water but it's great anyways). I personally haven't gone but I know they have many events such as guided hikes (new moon & full moon) and yoga with the rangers. They also have special events for holidays that look like great fun if you have kids. Highly recommend checking this place out!! read more

Ok, I am not 100% sure but I do believe that the reviewer before me might be confusing SMR with Bonnie Springs, the Wild West Town just a mile from the ranch. They aren't connected and are two different places, and Bonnie Springs has a pretty run down petting zoo area, not the SMR I believe...could be wrong but just thought I'd mention it. Anyways...SMR is a great little place and nice alternative from Red Rock, which my husband, son and I usually go to every weekend for hiking and such. They have a very nice picnic area and open field with green grass for activities, of course with a gorgeous backdrop of the mountains. The actual ranch house itself is interesting to look around, wish I could have managed to go on one of the guided tours though that are offered daily. You also can watch the horses at the ranch, or hike some very pretty trails leading back towards the mountains, and sit by a very pretty blue lake behind the ranch. Just to note, the landscape is so different from Red Rock even though they are so close because of the spring that runs through there, so a lot more green and different plants. We went on a Saturday morning around 10 and there was only one other person there which was not that outlandish considering it was a September day. We paid the $9 entrance fee which wouldn't have been a huge deal had we stayed longer but more on that later... We brought our dog who is a yorkie/schnauzer to go hiking with us because the previous yelp reviews suggested that the trails are well suited for dogs. I would have to completely disagree. The cactus' on the overlook trail were dropping spiny pods all over the ground and if your dog deviated even slightly off the path they could easily pick those up and unfortunately for my dog he had 4 huge cactus pods stuck in every single one of his pads. He couldn't walk because they were so painful so every couple of feet he would start limping, I would go check his pads, remove the cactus spines and this continued over and over. Again, we were on the overlook trail and decided that we should turn back and walk the grounds. That was a relief for his sweet feet and it was nicely shaded so we got some relief from the sun. We will be back, without our dog, so that we can enjoy some of the hikes and do some more exploring. read more

West of Red Rock Canyon this is a Nevada state park that was once a ranch owned by Howard Hughes.It's interesting but the four stars are for the parks stars- the wild burros ! I saw 14 of them. I'm sure you're supposed to revile them as threats to the eco system but they are hard not to adore.Also saw a jackrabbit and some coots.Make a a point of walking around the property.There are also some inviting trails but didn't have time for them. read more

Absolutely loved this place! Took my 3 & 4 yr old and they loved it as well! Tons of green grassy fields to run and play. Picnic areas, walking/hiking trails and a little lake. The tour of the ranch house was interesting and my toddlers loved it as well. However the tour guide did not like our kids touching anything, understandably, as everything is super old and priceless. I'd love to go back without the kiddos and do some of the hikes. read more

Spring Mountain Ranch State Park - The little lake above the ranch house and old cabins. - Parks Near Me - Blue Diamond, Nevada

We recently visited this park with our two well trained service certified dogs. The entire time I felt as if I had intruded some sacred garden and was constantly stalked by one to two of the several park rangers. This place is not that big thus wondered why there seemed to be an out of ordinary number of employees and park rangers. Perhaps that's why there is an entry fee of $10 it didn't feel like a State Park - rather more like you were trespassing on someone's estate private property with over zealous Rangers waiting to scold you about getting too close, going off trail, or letting your dogs relieve themself off leash. it was total policing on their part - probably don't have enough to do. We could not get even close to the small lake that was home to some fish species it's was double fenced in and too far away to see. Signs everywhere " walking off path is against the law" lots of coned off places very unwelcoming for a so called State Park " Our taxes pay for this unwelcoming place ? Go to Red Rock or Mt Charleston for your nature fix. read more

Super Summer Theatre is a wonderful tradition to take advantage of! The weather is cooler than the city limits, the mountain scenery is beautiful and the opportunity to picnic with friends on a summer evening is unforgettable! Arrive early to get parking and find a spot on the grass. Weds and Thurs evenings are far less busy than Fri and Sat nights. Each show is about 2 hours long without an intermission. Enjoy!! read more
