As a humble intern, father to a seven-year-old daughter, and aspiring medical laboratory technician in 2015, I was summarily dismissed from my internship not with the dignity of a conversation, nor the courtesy of a written warning, but via a piece of paper slyly slipped into my hand, accompanied by an enigmatic directive to call a supervisor who, with all the empathy of a malfunctioning answering machine, told me, "Leave the hospital." In that moment, my professional aspirations, financial stability, and trust in academic institutions were crushed--flattened like a hot pan in the dish pit I toiled in for years to pay for it all. Let us briefly pull back the velvet curtain and examine the star of this spectacle: the "Snow White Comment." In an industry that prides itself on clinical objectivity and evidence-based judgment, how delightful it is to discover that my facetious remark--saying Snow White was my girlfriend--was apparently interpreted as a dire indicator of mental illness. The staff's response? Not a gentle word, not a query into my well-being, not the faintest attempt at clarification. Instead, they fashioned a narrative where sarcasm morphed into psychosis, and humor was entirely forbidden--a bold new standard, no doubt, for preparing students for the real world. Keri William Richards, whose missive on my alleged "unprofessionalism" reads like the script of a melodrama. According to her, I was incorrigibly rogue, "not listening," "doing my own thing," and, most egregiously, "wasting his time and ours." This, despite not a single documented conversation, warning, or opportunity to improve--apparently, the sacred principle of feedback is reserved only for those faculty members whose professional conduct is not above reproach. The staff, while clutching their pearls at my supposed lack of professionalism, demonstrated an Olympic-level ability to avoid direct communication and procedural transparency. In the end, they achieved only one thing: violating my rights under the Ohioans with Disabilities Act of 1969, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of perceived psychological disability, especially without due process or accommodation. It's almost as if irony itself drew up their policies. The harm was not limited to my sense of justice. It was financial--thousands of dollars in student loans for non-transferable, academically sub-par credits, all because Clark State sold me a bill of goods about their transferability. It was emotional--my trust in educators forever eroded, my self-confidence battered, my dreams of becoming a licensed MLT lost. Most cruelly, it was personal: As a father, I wanted only to build a better life for my daughter, to show her that hard work and education opened doors. Instead, I was shown the back door--quietly, furtively, without so much as a whisper of honesty. Yet, the ultimate punchline is that I did not wither. While Clark State and Springfield Regional Medical Center clung to their misconceptions, I worked--scrubbing hot pans in restaurants, burning the midnight oil, fighting for every new opportunity. I completed my bachelor's and a master's degree, and I now serve as a dual diagnostic clinician, helping those with substance use and mental health challenges. Clearly, clinical incompetency is not a malady from which I suffer. And so I say: if these institutions wish to lecture on professionalism, perhaps first consult a mirror. I've had 2 recent stays. First was in ICU and I really can't complain there. Some things were mildly annoying but in contrast to the other units, it wasn't bad. The return visit I had to be Re admitted but was taken to the 2nd floor. This was awful! I can't say one positive thing about this. After 2 nights of feeling like I was in a basement ( male nurse was creepy. He also turned off lights in hallway and I wasn't able to find the call light and my room was pitch black as well). No blanket, had a sheet but no one came in my room from 10 pm till about 5;30 am. I was miserably cold, frightened and literally felt abandoned in this awful place. Staffing was not good and no one working the unit told me anything. I was told the dr might discharge me on the 4th day but was able to convince the hospitalist to let me leave that night. NEVER will I agree to staying again. Awful ! read more

if you care for someone take then anywhere else. They discharged my Mom to early and ended up calling an ambulance less than 2 hours after discharge. Her second stay there began with an extremely long wait in emergency room and very rude case worker. The doctors and nurses make you feel like an inconvenience if you have questions. Physical therapy let my mom fall when they were working with her on steps and covered it up by saying her knee just touched the stairs. it took two people to help her up!!!! Was told same day she would be kept at hospital for the next 2 days. Next morning doctor discharges her at noon. An ambulance has to take my mom home. read more

Long wait in the ER, nurses didn't get my vein but still put saliene and morphine into my arm, nobody knew it wasnt in til I went for a contrast CT scan, arm was so sore for days following since everything they injected into me was in soft tissue. Had to call the nurse 3x to see if I could use the bathroom I was in extreme abdominal pain and was told nothing was wrong. Only plus side was that most of the staff was very nice. read more

I now understand why people are willing to drive 30, 40, or even 50 miles away to avoid this place. Went to the emergency room for debilitating upper back muscle spasms/pain. Already knew what the problem was and what the remedy was because I've been through this a number of times before and even have it in my medical chart, yet the staff at the ER treated me like I was an idiot. They would not tell me anything as far as how long before I can see a Dr. or get treatment. They left me in the waiting room in excruciating pain and when I asked how much longer they just ignored me. Never again! from now on its Sion MC, MVH, or Kettering where I don't have to put up with rude, condescending staff that keep information from patients like its a state secret or something. I finally left after about four hours and received the treatment I needed elsewhere. And when I said that I can't stand it any longer and I'm leaving -in great pain- by the nonchalant we don't care reaction of staff, I think they probably have that happen pretty often. I ended up at SRMC for an emergency chest pain episode, which was out of my network. I had the best care from the second I walked in the door. I ended up in CVICU and had bypass surgery. As an RN, I have to say, no care as ever surpassed them. Every person I encountered was mind, efficient, and knowledgeable. I highly recommend them! read more

Brought someone in who was suffering from chest pains... Took three hours to get a room, here for a total of seven hours before all was said and done to find out it was maybe acid reflux and low potassium. Staff in this place is a complete joke. Dillehay, you and your co-worker Kerri have hurt me and my family more than you could ever imagine. Kerri, you flat out lied to my instructor about me wanting to do venipuncture procedures "my own way", because that's just not true nor did you instruct me on how to do it correctly. I simply carried over the techniques I learned at clark state. But, I just wanted to let you know that I forgive you for what you've done. God has given me the power to forgive you, but I wanted to urge you to please not treat anyone the way you treated me in the future. All I wanted to do was utilize my natural scientific talents to support me and my family and you and your staff have stolen that away from me. Please, have some compassion and empathy for those around you. Instead of treating people like toilet paper, please start treating them with more concern. You're very selfish James, but I have been selfish in the past too. Please consider treating others around you better, because you're affecting the lives of those around you in an extremely negative way. Kerri wrote a letter to her supervisor James, telling him that she thought I was mentally ill because I showed a picture of snow white and said that she was my girlfriend. If you're thinking about getting a job at this place, think again. If you're a student, BEG your professor for them to send you somewhere else. This place doesn't train their students the way they're supposed to, nor do they have the efficient equipment to meet the criteria of study. The truth is, Kerri and maybe some of the other staff DIDN'T LIKE ME and looked for any EXCUSE they could to kick me out because of their own personal feelings. I've held several jobs and I have never been fired, let go, asked to leave, or anything! This place is getting sued soon. I just wanted to share what they did to me on September 7, 2020. I was taken to the ER by squad for a major seizure and major chest pains. I was unable to talk and was still convusling when I was brought in. They put me in a bed in the hall in front of the Nurses station for all the other patients in the hall to watch and over hear. The FIRST thing they did was not ask but accuse me of being an addict and being in the middle of an OD. Nevermind the fact that I had just been in the ER days prior for being really sick and again having major chest pains.My doctor and both nurses were the most unprofessional people I have ever met in my life. During me convulsing during my seizure, my nurse came up and looked at me and yelled over me to my other nurse "Boy she sure is causing a scene and out for attention!" Then durning my blood drawl, the woman doing it caused me to bleed while she was taking my blood because she kept shoving the needle further and harder into my arm and when I cried out, she told the nurse I'm a pussy! A few minutes after that the nurse comes back getting me ready for a test and another patient in the hall was recording me and my seizures and he told her he thought I was having a seizure and she said to him "No, Nicole is not having a seizure she over dosed on drugs" For THREE HOURS they let me sit and seize and convulse in the hall for all to see and me to suffer. I broke a front tooth during this seizure at the ER. Now here are the best parts. The doctor seriously told my nurses that he "should keep medication away from her so she fucking dies." Nurse responded that if she had the scars across her breasts and body like I do, she would KILL herself. Both nurses sat and slandered me right in front of me. Saying I'm an addict and telling everyone that would listen that i was faking, they even brought another nurse to look at me. My grandmother called to check how I was and see if they found what was wrong. They hung up on her even though she told them she is on my Living Declaration and has a right to know. I called 19 times to speak to someone and when I finally did, I got Paul Marlin. He told me he had heard a little about what happened but that since I was making a complaint, then I was NOT to hire an attorney to sue or to speak to anyone about what happened. He refuses to contact me. Heres the thing. After they sent me home STILL seizing, I seized and convulsed for 3 days after leaving the ER. I couldn't talk, I couldn't think or put my words together, teeth chattering and chest pain. I am STILL sick and suffering from September of last year. I FINALLY found a good doctor and she is going to be running all kinds of tests on Wednesday to find out what is wrong and what has been wrong. She said that she would be more than happy to back me on this and be on my side when I sue. Because this Wednesday, after I find out, I WILL be filing a lawsuit and suing not only the hospital but the Doctor and both nurses. That night at the ER has left me with PTSD depression and anxiety. The doctor made other comments about me, as did the nurses, but I am not posting those. But the doctor did make more comments about not treating me, withholding medication to help me and my body. He kept his word and didn't treat me. He told the nurses I'm just a "Drug seeking basic white bitch playing it up, cauing a scene and acting a fool." I had NO drugs in my system. They treated me like dog crap on the bottom of their shoes. I have been calling trying to find out what is going on and why nobody will respond to me. I spoke to the operator at the hospital about 3 months ago and told her I was ready to go public with this because it's wrong, I'm still suffering and sick and I don't think that doctor and both nurses need to be working with people especially if they can make funof my body and basically say to kill myself. She told me go ahead and go public if I want but they have a board of lawyers that would 'take care of it.' So, they treat you like shit here, refuse to help you, leave you with PTSD depression and anxiety, tell you you're not allowed to sue or hire an attorney or even talk about what happened and then threaten you with attorneys for wanting them held accountable for their actions and my pain and suffering. If they can do all this to me and treat me this way and say to kill myself, how much worse are they treating other patients? While the staff in the Cancer Treatment Center are friendly, there is no communication with the primary referring facility. We have to make a special trip to request records each time we go back to the primary referring facility. When an outpatient surgery procedure needed to be done, most of the nursing staff seemed to have no clue what was done or why it needed to be done. We were given basically no discharge instructions, then when an emergency occurred two days later and my husband was transferred back to SRMC via squad for direct admit, it became a nightmare. Routine meds he was taking at home were never given, and when I asked if we needed to bring them from home, the staff stated no, they would "take care of it". This was 2 months ago, and he is still suffering the effects. The multiple hospitalists had no idea why he was transferred there or why he was admitted. After my husband questioned why a procedure was planned and he had not been informed or consented, he was "punished" by laying there for two more days with no answers, basically no care, and requests for answers were ignored. The discharge planning people were very rude about attempting to arrange home health. When I asked for an escort to my car in the parking lot late at night, they stated they "don't do that here". Even the volunteers are surly. This basically proves that one can "pretty-up" the facility but unless the care is even marginally good, the community should go elsewhere for medical care. read more

I was admitted to this hospital for over a week for a collapsed lung I can't say that my stay was great because it was horribly painful when I couldn't get any pain medicine but for the most part the staff was helpful and friendly, the nurses neglected to tell me about the possibly of iv infiltration and as a result it was left in for too long and now I have nerve damage from my elbow to my hands on my left arm, but despite all that this hospital saved my life and I appreciate them. read more

We just left SRMC after waiting with our nephew with cancer and a breathing problem for over two hours. He needed to lie down and we were told they had no beds. Last week we had him at Soin and they drained his lungs of a quart of fluid. He probably needs it drained again, but they probably had some kid there with a hurt finger and they had more priority than my nephew. Don't take anybody there if they are very sick. They can die while waiting to be seen by a doctor. That is the poorest excuse for a hospital that I have even had the occasion to see. I suggest you drive a little farther and go to Soin or to Miami Valley Hospital where they have doctors, beds and care about the patients. read more

My 91 year old father spent 17 days in the hospital before he died. The medical staff could not have been nicer or more attentive. The service staff were always pleasant and helpful. The facility was first rate. As a family, we interacted with doctors from various specialities including palliative care and hospice. Each step was carefully explained and our questions were answered in layman terms so we could easily understand. read more

My children & I were struck in a serious auto-accident & brought to the Springfield Regional ER! They did nothing but give us some pain medication & pushed us out the door! A few days later I took my daughters to their pediatrician because their pain had increased! He immediately referred us to Dayton Children's Orthopedics! My oldest received X-rays there & found that her c6 had hit her c7( two vertebra in her neck) from her severe whiplash almost to the point her vertebra was chipped! Also they believe her right knee has a MCL sprain/tear! Both my daughters suffer from a post concussion that went undetected at Springfield's ER! What can I say about Springfield Regional Medical Center other than: do not ever go there as a patient. You will be lucky to get out of there alive, and at the very least, worse than when you came in. Also, if you are looking at SRMC as a potential employer I cannot stress enough that you need to RUN away now. Seriously, you DO NOT want to work for them. I worked for this place for just over a decade as a registered nurse. I began my career at Community Hospital and it started out okay. Then if you can imagine being on fire, then being pushed down a hill and rolling over broken shards of glass and trying to avoid frequent drone strikes, that is roughly what working at SRMC is like. Let's start this story in the Emergency Department, if you are going to be a patient there this is most likely where your journey will begin. The ED is probably the most spoiled unit of all of the units of the hospital. The staff there do try to take good care of their patients but they leave a lot to be desired. When the ED nurses give report to one of the unit nurses, when a patient is admitted, they typically have no idea what is going on with the patient. Frequently when a nurse from the floor gets report it is from another nurse who is just covering for the actual nurse. Also, frequently the floor nurse will get report from an ED nurse who just got report from another ED nurse that has just gotten off of their shift. Another issue is that the ED will call and say the infamous words of "the patient is ready" and the nurse gets to the ED and they have to wait, sometimes up to another 20 minutes or longer, to get report. As you can imagine this causes things to fall through the cracks, and make both nurses look like they have no idea what is going on. The ED seems to always have a plethora of staff; doctors, nurses, techs and unit clerks. With that said they act like they are some of the most helpless people in the hospital. One of the requirements for the inpatient units is that when a patient is admitted from the ED, whichever nurse that is going to be assigned the new patient upstairs has to leave the unit and go and pick up the new patient in the ED. The floor nurse only has thirty minutes from the time the patient is assigned, to be down in the ED to get the patient. If the floor nurse is not in the ED by the thirty-one-minute mark the ED is calling the unit and complaining. If that phone call does not result in the nurse arriving in an "appropriate" amount of time, then it just escalates from there. The ED will call the nursing supervisor and even the nursing directors. Now I am not saying that the ED does not have staffing issues just like the rest of the hospital, but theirs's always seems to be fewer and further between. Also, they have a nurse Team Lead, 24/7 who does not take patients. With that said, requiring the floor nurses to leave all of their patients to go to the ED to get a patient is not only a waste of resources, but also dangerous to those patients that are left on the floor until that nurse is able to return. Those patients on the floor are not left without another nurse to cover for them, but it could leave the nurse on the floor with up to as many as 8-14 patients to cover until the nurse returns from the ED. Now let us talk about the intensive care unit. This unit is probably the second most spoiled unit in the hospital. Trust me, I understand that these patients are typically the sickest patients in the hospital. These patients need to have more attention from their nurses due to the severity of their illness and comorbidities. That does not mean that the rest of the patients in the hospital do not require frequent monitoring from their nurses as well. When the ICU's staffing is short for long periods of time, administration will block out beds in the ICU to keep census low so that staffing and census match up. This means that the ICU nurses have to each take 2-3 patients every shift for several shifts before this will be done. Now, with that said this is not done for all of the units. I have worked on units where a normal ratio for a nurse is 1:5-6. Then if the hospital is short staffed those nurses are then required to take 6-8 patients. 5-6 patients in this day and age where patients are only getting sicker and physically larger is a little too much. Then to expect that just because the hospital is short, these already overworked nurses are okay to take 6-8 patients each is reprehensible and downright dangerous. Rooms are not blocked on any other unit in the hospital except ICU, no matter how short those units are. SRMC can talk a good game that patient care is the main focus of the facility, but I am here to tell you first hand that patient care is placed on the back burner and the bottom line is financial. Next how about we look at the rest of the inpatient units. By inpatient units I am referring to the two step-down units, telemetry and medical/surgical units. These units are treated like read more

My daughter had a terrible experience at this hospital on Wednesday October 5, 2016, 12:30 am. She is 33 years old and all of a sudden started coughing up huge amounts of blood. She had to wait until 6am the next morning even though she came in before many others they took in ahead of her. Their explanation, they are sicker than you. All they did was do a chest x-ray and send her home even though the doctor said "Im concerned by the amount of blood you are coughing up. In going to her family physician, and Urgent Care, those doctors could not believe the way she was treated, and no additional tests were given. This is not the first time we as a large family have experienced this lack of treatment. We have been advised by many doctors in Springfield that this hospital is a joke and to go to either Columbus or Dayton or Madison County Hospitals.
