Date: 5/11/2017 Time: 10:51 AM 64° Mostly cloudy This morning I stopped by Lee's Donuts to get a ham 'n cheese croissant and juice, only to see they are on vacation until May 30th. Okay, I need a breakfast fix. Where shall I go next - somewhere within walking distance besides Nation's? Aahh...Spritzer's, which is down the street (Central Avenue) from Lee's. I have always wanted to try the spinach quiche from Spritzer's, but could never seem to stop in to check this place out. The ambiance is casual and comfy. The walls are filled with framed artwork. The main entrance leads to the assortment of baked goods in the glass display cases. Bags of assorted roasted coffee grind in two different sizes are stacked up on a shelving unit to the right of the entrance. Comfy seating for two in the corner facing window. The adjoining room to the left of the entrance is more spacious and very inviting for the enjoyment of beverage and baked goods (be it the spinach quiche, pastries, Russian tea cakes or whatever tickles one's fancy). Eats: a slice of spinach quiche and a bottled water. I am not much of a coffee drinker, unless it is an iced skinny cinnamon dolce latte from SB. The quiche was edible, despite it being just a tad dry. Overall, it was okay compared to the asparagus quiche I had elsewhere. The assortment of sliced loaf bread looked delish. If I weren't type 2 diabetic, I would have at it with their pastries. I will return to Spritzer's to try other items on their menu, hoping that I can give them a better rating than a 3 star. The ambiance is a 4 star, but the cafe has to grow on me. I need a little time to visit and enjoy the environment. read more

The Good: Always the same woman there and she's pleasant and efficient. Never a line and ample seating. Comfortable environment for work/reading with local artwork and decent music. Conveniently located next to Upper Washington Park. The Bad: Coffee is Starbucks level. There's three other much better places to get coffee within half a mile (Neptunes, Cafe Jolie, Wescafe). Best coffee on Webster for sure. I've only had the drip but it is on point!! Other places over roast but the coffee here is just the right flavor. Great ambience, ample seating, and free wifi. My new favorite spot for getting work done. Very good pastries also, especially the cinnamon rolls. This is weird but it's also really nice how if you get a bagel and cream cheese, the lady always spreads the cheese perfectly evenly on each bagel half. Will be back. Probably tomorrow. read more

One really nice getaway for great coffee plus wonderful art work by local artists. A wonderful antidote to the corporate joints in Alameda. Pastries and food, too. This is a comfortable space - comfortable furniture, no loud noisy music, parking on the street outside the front door, and VERY early AM hours. Coffee is African and great. The only problem I have found is that they have stopped using the Chai Tea concentrate and swapped it for a (cheap-tasting) powder. That was my favorite drink, but the coffee is excellent. They also offer a quick breakfast (cooked), quiches too, and fruit and snack bars for those on the run. read more

I want to like this place, I really do. It's the closest coffee shop to my house, and they seem like they try really hard. So hard it feels pretentious. Unfortunately, it just doesn't work for me. The coffee is average at best. Their snack selection is limited to a few pastries. Yes, they have wifi, but there isn't a comfortable seat in the place. There are little tiny tables, which can barely accommodate two people with coffee, let alone a laptop. Or there are hard chairs and "tables" that are really just large pieces of wood. They are the most kid-unfriendly coffee shop I've experienced, going so far as to request that no children sit in the larger room, unless in a stroller. I'm so glad that Wescafe has opened just a couple of blocks down Webster Street. I actually feel welcome there - with or without my family. read more

My favorite coffee shop on the west end of Alameda, if not the entire island. They serve Illy coffee, which has a somewhat milder flavor than the dark roasts that most other places around here serve - which may or may not be your thing. The staff is quick and curteous, though it seems like there's a new face behind the counter every time I go in there. Bobby, however, has been there a while and knows more about coffee than anyone else I know. Local artists work hangs on the walls. The couches are comfortable. read more

I love this place. My sister introduced me to this place a little over a month ago, as she's a little over Starbucks and would like to support the Mom & Pop-ish places. Anyway I came in with her one day, and it is a small and quaint little place. But I didn't realize that there is actually a whole 'nother room to the left once you walk in. Anyway, I love their chai and their prices. It tastes so good! I don't know what magic ingredients they have, but I have only been ecstatic about one other chai and that was made at the Alameda Lucky's at Marina Village before they tore it down (to this day I still don't know why - they were the bomb!). But anyway the chai is all I've tried so if I feel spontaneous I might try something else, but regardless of who makes it, it always tastes good. I've only been here during the week in the early afternoon, between noon and 2pm and it's never been busy each time, but today was the first time I went on a weekend, and even though it was a Saturday morning (11:30am) and there were three people in front of me in line I got my drink pretty quick. The guy even told me that if I wanted to drink outside me would bring it out - quick and efficient service (even though I had no intention of enjoying it outside as I was going to work immediately afterward - but it's the thought that counts!). Top notch service. I've tried their marble pound cake, which wasn't bad at all. But there are no prices adjacent to the food item - pretty slick. My sis purchased the cake slice so I cannot attest to the price, but this place isn't astronomical with the coffee, so I would assume the same for the food and pastries. They have a lot of options (hello tiramisu), but a lot of them are to my thing (hello quiche). But at least they accept debit cards - what more could you ask for? read more

This morning's match is between Decent "Fair-to-middlin" Coffee and Rude "why-won't-he-just-die" Counterboi. And there's the bell! Aand Decent Coffee takes the first swing, sidestepped by Rude Counterboi (We thought that this place would have good coffee, so chose to come here first.). But Coffee came back with a huge roundhouse and now Counterboi is bleeding freely while Coffee is looking good (The idiot behind the counter actually argued with me on how much sugar I wanted in my iced coffee) Now staggering, Counterboi takes a one-two to the gut! (He argued with me about the fact of sugar being less obvious in cold drinks!) Counterboi, trying to recover, comes in for a clinch but the ref breaks it (I told the moron that I was having a really bad day and had already ripped two clerks apart for bad service, so please, please lay off -- he show me two index-finger 'pistols' and said NO with a grin so I stormed away before blood was drawn, let my partner deal with the idiot) And Coffee takes a lucky but hard hit to the chin! And Coffee stumbles into Counterboi! AND THEY'RE BOTH OUT COLD!!! (the coffee was bitter, not sweet enough, watery, and pretty freakin nasty. I left it on the counter.) Bad customer service will kill this place. I hope the management is listening, because service used to be good but it's really, really sucked lately. I'm going to steer clear for a good long while, hopefully the idiotic young servers will, like acne and a stupid fight, clear up. read more

Spritzers is a little gem here in Alameda! For those who are tired of the mediocre Starbucks cup of coffee, venture on down to Spritzers for some awesome drinks and pastries! I love the iced cappuccinos and banana bread!!! Some of the best banana bread around! The service is always friendly and accommodating. I also LOVE the ambiance of the cafe, they always have great artwork from local artists on the walls. It's like being in a museum! wow. I think i just found my new home office away from home. As I'm typing this, I can hardly put down this slice of gingerbread long enough to hit the keys, it's so moist and flavorful. Here on a mid-day Monday, people are here but it's not crowded. In the big room, there are 2 couch/lounge groupings , 5 two-top tables perfect for laptop work and it's a pleasant, sunny space with minimal noise and soft background music. Soy Mocha is good and cheaper than drip at some places I've been. Good for twosomes and solo workers during the day, cause they close early. read more

I have been a regular Spritzers' customer since February of 2001 -- or almost as long as its been open. Over time, I have watched Spritzers' double in size, change coffee twice, change art monthly, and add live music. I've seen baristas stay for long and short seasons. I've watched babies grow to seven-year-olds, and families both form and dissolve while sharing friendship, connection, coffee, and a love of art and community at Spritzers. While many things in life - and Spritzers - change, some also remain consistent. Crisp, clean, old-world-meets-new environment accented by high ceilings, colorful tilework, contemporary curves, and traditional white pillars adorned with those beautiful buttress things at the top that pillars in Europe boast. Monthly rotation of original art featuring local artists. (This has always been FREE, though the quality is often that of a private art gallery.) A word on the coffee: while it's been good over the years and kept me coming back, there have been times when the quality has ranged from excellent to just good. However fairly recently, along with the return to their original Italian coffee purveyor (Torrefazione, which is now Umbria), it's more consistently great. (The double-short Americano is Excellent!!!) The art: there are some art showings that I prefer over others, but regardless of like or dislike, art provides a medium and canvass from which people can communicate. And, the stronger the like or dislike, the greater the opportunity for peacefully bridging community through sharing - even if it means agreeing to disagree! Case in point - this month features the work of local Alameda resident Michael MacDonald, artist, and former US Navy veteran. His art gives one interpretation of the value of war (or lack thereof), and the impacts that violence, censorship, corporal punishment, and some of the shortcomings of government/societal systems (i.e. homelessness) have. Public response has ranged from the highest praises, to just yesterday morning a customer threatening the owner (while I was standing there) with never returning to his shop (mind, after he'd spent all weekend absorbing the art!) Is Spritzers ahead of its time, or in the "best demographic location"? Some say it might better fit downtown SF or even Walnut Creek...but why shouldn't local Alamedans enjoy this treat and gem of a place?! And, perhaps we ought to clue the other locals from Oakland, SF, Berkeley, the Creek, and other surrounding areas in...this is a great place!!! read more

So I live around the corner from this small cafe for months now and have always wanted to try it. So on a Monday morning, my Husband and I walked over with our dog to finally give it a shot. The outside of it was very cute, simple and clean. We saw some people inside on their laptop or reading a newspaper with their cup of brew. So I thought, hmm, so far so good! I sat outside to take it in the environment and atmosphere to see if this is something we can get use to as our morning spot. It wasn't too bad, the traffic that was going back and forth didn't bother me and there were people walking their dogs or kids, so it was the normal neighborhood feel. My husband went inside and ordered himself a coffee and zucchini bread, he got me a banana, apple juice and an order of pancakes. I should have known better not to order pancake at a small cafe, it was the frozen kind from the box that they heated in the microwave with and the syrup I got was cold, so it took forever to come through the bottle. The coffee my husband had was a bit bland and the bread he ordered was probably the best thing out of all, expect the fresh banana..thank god. So I don't hate the place, but probably won't be back...which is too bad because I do like that its close by in the neighborhood and its a cute spot. I would provide more fresh baked items and spruce up the coffee!! I would totally give it another shot if they did =) read more

This place has great drip coffee. I tried an espresso the other day, which was pretty decent. Good pastries too. The inside is very cool looking, with a relaxing atmosphere. Free wi-fi too, so it's a great place to read or surf the internet. I like that it's right next to the park; a nice stop before or after a walk down by the beach. I'd give it 5 stars if they were open later. Though right now (for summer) they are staying open until 7pm on weekdays. read more

My husband raves about the coffee here, so I finally tried it (after years of living nearby). GREAT coffee (I had a regular coffee w/a shot of espresso). Perfect temperature, texture, a slightly chocolatey flavor...I was amazed. And inexpensive (compared to the corporate joints). Food/pastry choices limited, not an issue for me. Nice seating area with art for sale. Lovely service from a young, French (?) woman. I don't fuss about milk selection or any of that, so maybe I need to try the other drinks. I have been going to Spritzers for a few years and love it.is a nice family owned, local low key, unpretentious business. Just the type of business I prefer to support. The windows are nice for viewing the outside world, and the coffee and other items are fresh and tasty. Prices are quite reasonable. What more is there to ask for? They also support local artists via giving gallery space and reception opportunities on their walls. I generally go there after my beach walk and through the park. Came here on the 4th of July (yesterday) and FINALLY got to try this little cafe... We sat outside, watched the parade, and tried to enjoy our food & drink, but found it all to be quite the disappointement... The veggie quiche was *OK* at best, but nothing special. My hot mocha was needing some sweetening help (and afterward it was fine) but the gf's iced mocha [for some reason] was pretty gross (even after adding sweetener). Service was pretty friendly so that was a plus and there was live music in the sideroom, so props for that, but when you factor in the insane hours and the lacking food/drink, I just dont' feel that this place is "A-OK" in my book. I loved Spritzers when they used to serve illy coffee. Now, they are still good, but really miss the BAM of the illy. Appreciate the atmosphere, the art shows, friendly service, the community vibe. I used to study here a lot as a grad student. Many times, I have watched the person ahead of me order the last chocolate croissant just as I get to the next-in-line spot - argh! Stopped by with my boyfriend after walking our pup, because we wanted some breakfast and a little break. We had originally planned to pick up some food at the Farmer's Market on Webster, however they don't allow dogs around the market, so we decided to opt for a small cafe. This place is pretty cute and quite spacious. I didn't try their tea or coffee, but my bf got a simple black tea that he enjoyed with his ham & cheese sandwich. My spinach quiche was alright; the flavor got bland or boring after a couple of bites. Not much pizzazz, unfortunately. They do have outdoor seating, which was the biggest reason for our visit.
