When you pull up to this place for the first time you're going to have a lot of concerns. The neighborhood is sus and the place itself looks like a multi family that they converted into a bar. The cook was outside ripping a vape when we pulled up. The inside didn't have any real servers (I don't think) so I had to stare down the busy bartender to get service. The food was middle of the pack bar food that you'd probably enjoy more the next morning after drinking 10 PBRs the night before. This is exactly the type of place I love, but my girl wasn't a big fan. Listen, this is 100% a locals bar and they seemed to be having a great time, trivia wasn't bad either. If I had to describe my experience here in one word, I would choose "unexpected" - but I mean that in a good way! As a first-time visitor, without navigation going, it's not obvious you're even near the place because it's in a residential area, and the building is partially blocked by a large fence around the outside dining area. Inside it has a very comfy "local" feel, with seats at the bar, and a larger dining area with a variety of tables that can seat larger parties. The beer selection isn't extensive, but they have enough of a variety to satisfy everyone. And our waitress was fantastic, very knowledgeable and extremely friendly. I had checked the menu and reviews before visiting, and I noticed particularly good reviews about the pizza. I have to say, I was impressed. As "pub pizza" the quality was again "unexpected," with a variety of specialty pizzas, and a fantastic, crispy crust to the pie. I came here with local friends who enjoy doing the Wednesday night pub trivia. It's run by Pop Quiz Trivia, our favorites in the Boston area. They only give out prizes for the top 2 teams here, so be sure to consume that "thinking juice." read more

Went Christmas shopping about an hour north of home and did a search for pubs in the area to grab some lunch. Spruce Street Tavern popped up with good reviews so we decided to give it a try. Upon arriving I was ready to go somewhere else as it looked like a neighborhood hole in the wall, but then said, "It could be great" so we gave it a go. Well it was a hole in the wall, but in all the best ways! The bartender, Andy, and the customers at the bar "all neighborhood regulars" were so welcoming! The hubby and I immediately felt like part of the gang. The service was great, food delicious (we ordered wings and pizza) and we had a terrific time. We will most definitely be back the next time we're in the area! A hidden gem for sure! read more

Walked in and waited and after we got their attention the bar tenders told us to seat ourselves. Only 5 other tables were full, so it wasn't even busy. They did not let me in because I had an out of state ID. I was told they only accept out of state IDs if you are 35+ years old. I've lived in Boston for the past 5 years and have never heard this rule before. No wonder why this place was dead on a Saturday night. read more

Food is good but guy who cooks is a jerk. Been here several times and always same experience. Good food with a total jerk cooking. Tonight I asked for some paper plates since all our plates are packed because we are moving and just wanted something to eat off of, and this is the place we decided to get our last take out before leaving town, I was told they are cutting back. My wife called back to question this and jerk in kitchen told her never to come back and hung up. Great way to build a customer base. Great service after giving them business over the past 2 1/2 years. Business must be hurting if they can't afford two paper plates on a take out order. If business is down and they want to know why... They can start in the kitchen.... Guy is a total jerk and always has been. read more

Take-out order was an absolute disaster. Ordered a specialty pizza with no garlic and cheese fries, and they gave us garlic bread and the pizza with garlic. They insisted we asked the bread and not fries and denied that there was garlic on the pizza. They are lucky that my garlic allergy doesn't result in hospitalization. The beer was cold- waitress inattentive- had to go to the bar to get our bill. Karaoke was OK- good selection of songs but music isn't loud enough (even when the singers are). The DJ plays too much music and takes too many breaks when there are people there to sing. read more

Found this place through yelp, great spot, great food and prices. Excellent hard to find local jewel but worth the hunt. Don't let the facade fool you, go in and eat. Good beer selection. I will eat here again. read more

Stopped by and ordered two Pizza's and an Italian sub. Excellent food! Ordered: The Tavern Special - Feta, tomatoes, spinach, garlic, basil. Choice of red or white sauce Buffalo Chicken - Grilled chicken smothered in buffalo sauce, mixed with blue cheese crumbles Both pizza's were fantastic. Friendly help and the owner is too. OMG! Pizza heaven is not in New York City, Chicago or even New Haven. It reigns in the back of Spruce Street Tavern under the craftsmanship of Jack Weeks. His pizza is brilliant. If your idea of pizza is glorified cheese bread, turn in your foodie card and go elsewhere. This pizza has a generous layer of tomato sauce with a vibrant fresh taste. Topped with a layer of full flavor cheese expertly melted on a platform of thin layer crust you have the perfect pie. I've been to most of the pizza capitals around the world and Spruce Street Tavern rivals and surpasses the best. Again, this pie has an abundance of the main ingredients, sauce and cheese, which I love. Yet the crust holds up and doesn't get soggy. We had the plain cheese and didn't miss the absence of toppings at all. But with this great foundation I can only imagine that additional ingredients would take the great to the superb. the blt pizza is so good! a great small place to go. the only thing that didn't get it a 5 star for me personally is when you call for a pick up order. there's so many people at the bar that I usually get ignored and have to wait 10 minutes to get my order and pay for it. read more
