I've been going to Christina at Spunk for almost three years. She is fantastic! I got the recommendation from a friend of mine, and have been happy ever since. I've always been super lazy about my hair, and Christina understands this. She gives me a fantastic cut every time, and it always grows out looking good (making it easy for me to only get my hair cut every 4-6 months, which she kindly also does not yell at me about). Another thing about my hair - I used to have stick-straight Asian girl hair, and then in my early twenties it decided to get weirdly wavy. If I let it air dry it got all bumpy and weird in like 2 places... and I always wanted to have curly hair, but this was a mess. I told Christina all about it, and she taught me how to make my hair curly in a pretty way! So I love Christina for teaching me how to do my own hair without a ton of maintenance, and also for always making me look good. Oh! And, I got married in June and she did a great job with a trial run to help me pick a couple of styles (we had two different receptions I had to get my hair done for - one was going to be on the East Coast). For my East Coast reception, the stylist totally had an easy time seeing the photos I took of Christina's work and making something similar happen, and of course, on the day of the SF reception, she made my hair look goooood! I went to Spunk Salon in the Castro to get some highlights and am SO HAPPY. My hair looks fantastic! Ben did the best job at the following things, which (let's be honest) do not always get paid attention to when one ventures in to a new Salon: 1) Actually listened to my request 2) Made certain my request was realistic for the type, length and condition of my hair 3) Made sure the color matched my skin tone and was a good choice, not the preminition of a sad outcome 4) Covered the are you comfortable aspect 100% 5) Clear on price, time that the appointment would take 6) Didn't ask me the 7 standard questions that all cab drivers, cashiers, waiters, hotel agents, beauty professionals must endure asking and answering - woo hoo! Anee List did great things for my curly hair. She really listened when I said I did not want to have my hair blown straight like so many stylists seem to want to do. (Note to stylists everywhere: Who says all women want straight hair??). I got a great cut and an awesome highlight. She works Saturdays which was super convenient, she texted me to confirm and see if I could come in earlier. She's very smart and funny and just terrific. Salon had a great vibe too. When I arrived for my appointment I told Suzie I wanted to cut a considerable amount of my length off and give it a style. I didn't have any idea of what I wanted, but I knew it was time for a change. Since she last cut my hair over a week ago, I am *still receiving* compliments every.single.day. Not only is the cut current/"on trend" and expertly executed, it is perfect for the likes of me, who can barely manage to comb my hair in the mornings, let alone style it. I have a confession to make: I was avoiding having my hair cut. I had recently relocated from a town in Michigan where I found an awesome hairdresser that I trusted, and I didn't want to risk the possibility of getting a bad cut with someone new. But I took the plunge with Christina, and I'm so glad that I did! She really took her time to talk with me beforehand about what I wanted and how I normally styled my hair, and gave me a cute and chic layered cut that works really well with my hair texture. She gave me feedback on how I would experience the haircut (e.g. where it would fall and how it would look if she cut it a certain way), and took her time with me (in a good way). Unlike other hairdressers I have been to in the past, she didn't try to sell me on any particular product. Christina was down-to-earth and easy to talk to, and she even did her own shampooing. I felt like I got personalized service her, especially since she checked with me before making any changes to my style. Price is reasonable for SF and true to what their website advertises. Mine was on the lower end of the range; not sure if price is affected by which stylist you go to. This is a really cute salon in the Castro, a stone's throw away from the Castro MUNI stop. I've followed Christina to Spunk from her last two salons and would continue to do so, but this space is really nice and I think she's here to stay. You know you've found something amazing when you're motivated to call your stylist and tell her how much you love your cut/color days/weeks/months afterwords. This last time I couldn't even leave the salon without another client exclaiming how much they loved the color she gave me and insisting that she would like the same. The cuts she gives ALWAYS grow out just right and I get away with extremely long intervals between visits. Los Gatos is a hair salon mecca, yet I drive all the way to San Francisco because that is where Suzie opened her salon, Spunk. She is talented, creative, experienced, professional and just plain fun to be around. No other stylist has been able to color and cut my thick coarse Asian hair like her. She has been the catalyst to several big hair style changes over the years and I realized that I never felt truly confident in stylists previous to her in authoring a bold new look. Her new salon Spunk is definitely a reflection of Suzie: colorful, eclectic, modern and very welcoming. I love the toolbox stations and the view to the parade of interesting people that walk by her shop. One more thing about Suzie- she's the type of girl that you want as your best girlfriend! She's straight forward, kind, honest and laid-back, not like most stylists who thrive on drama. I have always hated my hair. Whether it was short or long, straight or curly, it was never quite right. Then I met Arzo. I went in with a vague description of what I wanted and a laundry list of things I didn't like. I think my exact phrasing was "can you give me something that's conservative enough for my day job in finance but dykey/butchy enough that I don't get mistaken for a straight girl anymore? My friends don't believe how hilariously hostile your questions are and how socially awkward you can make the hour I spend with you. I tried to get over the social downsides for the haircut upsides, but you've lost the haircut upsides. You didn't listen and kept going to town on my hair after I told you to stop. It's grown out weird. Real weird. Like most, I fear bad haircuts and can be reluctant to switch stylists. I can't say anything about the talent of the stylists here, as I never got that far, but something's lacking in communication. After scouring Yelp for hours trying to quell my haircut anxieties, I finally booked an apt at spunk. It was only two days in advance, but the lady on the phone said there was an available slot with Faith at 7pm on friday, my only day off before the start of the semester and the last availability I had for weeks. To my dismay, after driving out to the Castro from the south bay Friday night I was met by confused looks and sincere apologies - no one had booked my appointment! It sounds minor, but man do I need a haircut, and I was really looking forward to treating myself. I was always very frightened before I got a haircut. I have had horrible experiences and so-so cuts. Some stylists simply sucked and some didn't listen to what I wanted for my own head. For a while I just let my hair grow out completely to avoid being disappointed. Then I found Spunk Salon and got my hair done by Suzie. WOW! Amazing. She did exactly what I had wanted with her own twist on it. I haven't been this happy with a haircut for a long time. Suzie is so nice, very cool and is easy to talk to. After moving from Baltimore to San Francisco a few months ago I have been extremely hesitant about getting my haircut because I left such a great hair stylist in Baltimore and felt no one could live up to her skills. Well Christina at Spunk Salon has now lived up to my high standards. She listened to what I wanted: shorten the back, thin out the sides (because I have very thick hair), and shape the cut so that it reduces the wave on the left side. She gave me a cut that was better than I could have imagined. I will definitely be coming back in the future! Spunk Salon is located in the easily accessible Castro neighborhood. The salon has a very cool, funky decor with a beautiful copper plated (or at least copper-looking) front door. The haircut was not as cheap as my cuts in Baltimore, but compared to how much my sister pays to get her haircut in the Bay Area I am definitely paying a reasonable amount. read more

After a lot of soul searching, yelping, and hunting, I zeroed in on Spunk for my yearly haircut. I have the worst kinda hair, frizzy, wavy and thick. I also happen to have bad luck with hair stylists and salon. Correct that - 'used to have bad luck'. I found Spunk and I found Annee. I found Annee and I found my hair-stylist-Goddess. She's honest, straightforward, smart and funny. She'll tell you like it is, and you can't help trusting her. I'm not one of those people who goes into a salon with pictures or any idea of a hairstyle. I like having complete faith in the people who work on my hair (i'm also very lazy). Annee knew exactly what would look great, and she was spot on! I've never been here before, but only knew of it because I had been there on a film shoot. It's a very trendy place and I love the atmosphere inside it. I also love their copper doors! Well, due to all the good reviews it had, I decided to stop in and check it out as I was desperately in need of hair therapy. I mean, I've had so many layers cut into my hair, but yet my hair still seemed flat and I've had many split ends. So, I wanted my layers fixed. I've been having trouble finding a salon I was happy with. I've been to cheap ones and very expensive ones, always leaving in disappointment. I was starting to give up the hunt, thinking maybe I was just too picky and started cutting my own hair. However, my hair hasn't (sorry, I meant HAS, not "hasn't") gotten really long and I can no longer cut the back of it by myself. I've let my cousin cut my hair as she just graduated from beauty school and while she cut off most of my dead ends and cleaned up my layers, she still needs more experience as my hair still had the flatness problem. Plus, the layers she cut in only looked good when my hair was flat-ironed straight. Anyway, I was so lucky to have found an opening at Spunk. Even though they welcome walk-ins, they are so popular, that walk-ins are taken in if they have any openings. It just so happened that someone was coming late to their appointment that a spot opened up for me. Faith was my stylist and she is also the artist of the work displayed in the salon. She's so friendly and passionate about her work. I saw the care she put into my hair, even into my well-being, as she gave me a quick head, neck, and shoulder massage while allowing me to tell her what I wanted. Even as she shaped my hair when it was still wet, I could see that it was exactly what I wanted. Most places cut my bangs to length as it's wet, then when they dry it it becomes too short. Faith cut my bangs a little longer than length, dried them, then went back to trimming to length. PERFECT! I will drive the half hour to this salon and look for street parking just to come back here again and again. I definitely found my salon! read more

I walk by Spunk all the time, and my sister (when her hair got in that "yeah, i should get it cut" stage) went and got her hair cut by Suzie. She LOVED it, and so when my hair got too crazy (it's super curly and needs a lot of help) I made an appointment with Christina. This was, hands down, my most favorite haircut in my life. Not just because everyone I talk do gives me a compliment (but that helps, haha) but because for the first time in a long time, I enjoy having my hair down and in its naturally curly state without going crazy. I have had a few different people cut my hair over the last several years and was ready for a change. I asked a waitress that had such a great haircut "who does your hair?", and got Arzo's name. Arzo returned my call even while traveling, arranged an appointment that worked with my schedule, and gave me the best haircut I've had in years. Nothing makes me more nervous than a stylist who pauses a lot during the cut, and you can tell by the variety of tools Arzo uses and the lack of hesitation that she knows exactly what she wants your hair to look like before she even starts, and knows how to get there. I also got color. Arzo has owned her own Salon and worked for Redken as a trainer. My color turned out very good, and she had some great suggestions for a gradual change that I'm looking forward to. Great experience, fair pricing for the high quality services, friendly conversation and a great central location. I booked an appointment and went there without any picture jus an idea of how I want my hair. I told her what i wanted...highlights, some layers and bangs...the result: GREAT HAIR. I had lots of compliment about my hair and it is growing out nice and evenly. Definitely going to see her again. Pricing is just about right..you get what you pay for..definitely worth it...I've spent about the same amount on other salon and didnt get the same results as what I recieve from spunk salon. Love the artwork and the vintage mirrors! Anee definitely knows what she is doing and if she thinks it wont match you, she will let you know...very straight forward but she will still give you what you asked for in case you dont want to take her advice. read more
