Went here on Halloween, and while I commiserate with the bartender who had to work rather than go out, I must point out: you're making money while everyone handing you cash hand over fist is spending it, so don't be a jerk. If you can't make a grilled cheese then I think you should retire from cooking. I love Sputnik as a bar because it's dark and moody and you can get drinks and vegan sandwiches late into the evening. I love it for lunch during the summer because it is cool and quiet and everything vegan on the menu is labeled as such, and is pretty tasty. Went to this place because we found it on yelp and it had decent reviews. Altogether, came away disappointed because: 1) VERY small portions on some dishes (Vietnamese lettuce wrap, Mac n Cheese) 2) Loud, which really is just a personal preference 3) Unfriendly/Almost comatose staff. How hard is it to smile or respond to "Thank you"? 4) The food was actually pretty good, but not incredible. Maybe my expectations were high. To be fair, I haven't been there in a year. The reason? I brought a full table of paying customers in and I got the impression from the server that we were bothering him. He probably doesn't work there anymore, but there's probably some snotty not-quite-out-of-the-closet waiter that has replaced him. Apart from that, I can only remember some very, very nasty egg rolls that tasted as though they were held at room temperature for a day or two before they were deep fried and served with an attitude. It's too bad. I live around the corner and eat out often. Save yourself the humiliation and order from the takeout window around the corner (Strelka). The corn dogs are hot, safe, and delicious. I would give zero stars. My one star is for the food. I wish the tips would go to whomever cooks my food because it's always delicious. Do not expect to be acknowledged or treated as a human being unless you have a beard or a man bun. The waitresses are absolutely terrible. I come here at least once a month sometimes more and have never had a good experience with the staff. I always tip 20% or more in hopes they will remember me and possibly acknowledge me next time. Nope. It always takes about 20 minutes for them to even notice you're there, it doesn't matter if it's busy or slow. Once they notice you you'll be asked what you want by passive aggressive snooty hipsters who clearly hate their job. They won't even look at you in the face and they literally spend as little time as possible interacting with you. I asked for a napkin so I could clean off my table and the girl just walked away and came back with a gross rag and angrily wiped our table. I would've done it myself so I wouldn't have to deal with you. Make sure you order your drinks and food immediately because it will take forever for them to even come back to your table. They're too busy flirting with man buns at the bar or checking their etsy accounts. Forget about refills. Forget about anything you could possibly need unless you make a point to stare at them until they come over so you can ask for it. Every single waitress is so ridiculous it's almost better to walk to the kitchen yourself and ask the cooks for food. My food came out, the cook puts it on a small table by the bar. I watched every waitress look at it and walk away. One even stood next to it on her phone for a few minutes. It literally just sat there getting cold. Finally one of them noticed me just staring at her so she got the food and brought it over. I seriously can't stand the staff. I always leave really pissed off because of how ridiculously embarrassing they are for a place that serves good food. I honestly don't know if management knows or even cares that this is happening. Looking at other reviews it's obvious everyone has the same problem with their staff. I say that no one should tip anymore so that the staff would leave and they can hire people who aren't so dumb and rude. Or better yet. Here's a tip, get off etsy and do your job. read more

Oh Sputnik, how I love thee. The food here is fantastic regardless of your tastes--vegan, vegetarian, or omnivore you will not leave unsatisfied. The drinks are also great--they have a wonderful selection of beer and a unique specialty cocktail menu. I love hitting up the happy hour for discount prices. Great place! Great atmosphere! We sat at the bar and had dinner and it wasn't invading at all when people were next to us at the bar ordering drinks! Once we sat down we waited about 10 minutes for a bartender to serve us but it was starting to get busy so its understood. The Banh mi sandwhich was bomb and so were the lettuce wraps. He compared it to a number of joints in Austin, Texas, which we both happen to like a lot. I'm a fan of that stretch of Broadway generally. Many of the businesses there appeal to the creative, open-minded (also younger, tatted and pierced) crowd, of which I like to consider myself one. (But not so much the other.) 11:30 on a Sunday and it was BUSY. Good for them. Not great for me. Several groups waiting for tables on the honor system. No sign-in or host person. Seats at the bar available on a survival-of-the-fittest basis. I had ordered a couple coffees before we acquired bar seats and once sat it took a while for one of the maybe three employees to offer any further assistance. "Can we get a couple menus?" "Yep." Gone. Wait. Try to make eye contact. "Can we order?" "Yep." Gone. Wait. Wait. Not bad, mind you. But for as busy as they were, some sense of urgency seemed appropriate. I was left feeling like they weren't terribly inspired by this whole "serving brunch" issue and were hoping we would all just go away so they could nurse their hangovers or perhaps take a nice nap in a booth. My only real negative was an absolute inflexibility with the menu items. I wanted one of the apps - some kind of stuffed corn cake, an Indian dish I think - and was hoping to get it with a couple eggs. They had eggs on the menu, although they were all scrambled. I even said I'd take scrambled, thinking maybe that was all they wanted to produce (maybe limited kitchen space/equipment, whatever). Just wanted a little protein. Anyway, bartender just said no, and that the cooks get a little crabby about changes to the menu. I love that this place has really good vegetarian and vegan options. They also have really good beers on tap. The sweet potato fries are great. They also have some good hot sauces. The $5 carafes of mimosas don't hurt either. In the past I have gone here and then gone to a show next door which makes a great night. They can get pretty packed though at peak times. read more

Went for a brunch with a few lady friends...we have nary a tattoo or a pair of nerd glasses among us, but I still felt like the hipsters made us welcome..which means they basically ignored us. Fine by me! I was too busy enjoying my vegan stacks of power to worry about anything else. Delicious quinoa cakes over greens and potatoes with a savory garlic sauce...so good!
