I picked up my fav, a little navy blue and red striped number, at Les' loft in September. I loved it so much that I bought one with the same design and different fabric at Wolfbait & B-girls. And! Most of her dresses are between $118-130. She also has many hats, including those furry aviators that are the thing this season. I bought a Squasht hat at a street festival probably ten years ago. Best hat I've ever owned. Then I dropped it three years ago while shopping and only recently thought to see if Squasht had an online presence. Hallelujah, they do! Replaced my hat and also bought a really lovely dress (on clearance!). I cannot say enough good things about Squasht. The quality is top-notch and the style is fantastic. The hat is the warmest, best winter hat I've ever owned (it's the Darby). And the dress is just beautiful. I can't wait for spring so I can wear it. The gods of local gifting smiled upon me (and several of my nearest and dearest) last night... With 30 minutes before a date at Kai Zan (across the street - another 5-star review to follow!) my mum and I made a quick stop at Squasht. I didn't know quite what to expect, but several signs beckoning us in to shop sealed the deal. Side point, really nice to see a boutique open past 530 or 6! Allows me more time to throw my money at them! We were greeted warmly and enthusiastically by the owner (Les) like we were old friends or regulars. We then proceeded to poke through the lovely assortment of gift-like items. The majority of the store is accessories (earrings, hair, socks, wallets/leather goods, necklaces, etc) and clothing (tees, dresses, etc). Everything is handmade and locally in Chicago, at that. Given these descriptors I'm sure you thought (as I did) that it would be crazy expensive. And in fact, it is not! Everything is extremely reasonable. Prices vary a bit artist to artist, but overall I found the pricing on par with the quality and style-factor found in the collections. Les was also super helpful in locating certain items without being pushy at all. You can tell she is extremely passionate about her store and her customers. It made for a great shopping experience. My haul: For myself: *2 Megan Lee tees. 1: Midwest is Best! (in a heart) and 2. Do What You Love. As someone who can barely thread a needle, I am in awe of people who can create an entire article of clothing. I entered Squasht on a whim, and liked the cheery items and friendly shopkeeper. I wasn't searching for anything in particular, but ended up loving a loose-knit and delicate slouchy black and white sweater, which has become a staple in my winter wardrobe. The jewelry was all beautiful, but I had to intervene and shut up the little devil on my shoulder whispering in my ear to buy it all. Luckily not before purchasing a lovely necklace for my sister-in-law. Both were splurges, but very reasonable considering the quality. Loved that this boutique offers handmade clothing and goods, with zero pomp or 'tude. I love, love, LOVE my Squasht dress!! I came in on a whim and Les helped me find a beautiful blue-black striped cotton dress. It fit like it was made for me, and made me feel beautiful, feminine, and fun. I love that all her dresses have pockets, too! She will alter the dress to fit you so that it truly is "made to order". I hope her boutique sticks around because it is dangerously close to my apartment and her clothes are just perfect. I have to recommend this great little boutique to anyone looking for original pieces to add to their wardrobe. I was there last for a trunk show for one of the independent jewelry designers that consigns there. I didn't end up with any jewelry, but I did walk out with a fabulous winter hat created by Les. The boutique has a selection of hats, dresses, skirts, hats, and headbands designed by Les; as well as jewelry from other local designers. I first fell in love with Squasht Boutique when I came across the Squasht slouch hats at a street fest. The material/style of the hats drew me in.The owner Lesley Timpe was wonderful! She showed me the different ways to style the hat and was a pleasure to talk to. A couple weeks later I went to see the actual boutique. I never get over to Ukrainian Village much and I have to go back and visit. Lots of cute shops in the area and the best part parking is free on the streets. The store itself is pretty big for a boutique. Besides her own clothing line she sells other locally handmade designer items. I like the affordability. It appeared most of the items were $150 or less. The clothes are updated for the season and the items are so unique. This will definitely be a place I go back to for myself and cool gifts for my girls. read more

It took me a while to visit this local shop that's literally right around the corner from me. I saw a pair of wood-cut earrings in the window recently and knew I had to make them mine. Feel so lucky that I stumbled on this place while visiting from out of town. Many irresistible things, clothes and accessories, to be had here - locally made by Les and other designers. Nothing can beat the satisfaction of buying directly from the designer. I specially loved some very fun serged knit dresses - stripes and color blocks smartly pieced together from scrap fabric. So great to pick up a dress that I feel excited to wear to the theater that same night, that's comfortable enough to sleep in and I can imagine wearing frequently at work and biking to the beach. Discovered two years ago at the Renegade Fair (a hat display is always a sure way to catch my eye, which is fine if you gently let it go unharmed after a couple of minutes), Squasht has become a regular stop of my shopping rotation. They have an amazing collection of my favorite things: dresses, hats (yes, again!), tights and jewelry. Each piece is locally made by lovely Chicagoan digits, and scream originality. Last spring, I bought brass clock hands turned earrings for $15. Believe me, you don't see that every day, on every lobe. The super cool designer, Lesley Timpe, brings a European vibe to her seasonal collection, and favors organic soy-cotton, pima cotton in vintage 1980s prints, vintage velveteen, imported Italian wool, and silk tweed. Lots of nature-inspired motifs and no crappy rayon to deal with. She only offers the real deal. Garments are pretty, versatile, soft to the touch and happy. Yes, happy! Prices are a bit steep if you are used to thrift stores or mass-produced items but it's worth shedding a few extra bucks on quality pieces. Also, sizes run on the smaller side so get rid of your holiday fat before stopping by.....you won't regret it. Tips: - they have an online boutique, with free shopping over $50, and are sold in over 20 retailer boutiques over the country (including one in L.A.!) - street parking is super easy; to make a total Ukie Village experience out of it, stop at Star Lounge for coffee, get some borscht at Schokolad or eat one of the best sushis in town at Kai Zan - plan your trip carefully!!! They close at 5 pm during the weekend. A definite bummer but, oh well, nobody's perfect. read more

The dress was a little long for my purposes so the owner offered to hem it gratis and mail it to me. The dress was delivered promptly as promised, wrapped so cute and protectively. this is the first time i've ever bought a dress and worn it out of the store. it was that cute. it also helped that two random people who wandered into the store while i was trying it out complimented me on how flattering it was. don't judge, i'd been studying the whole day at Sip coffee over on Grand, and it got too warm for my sweater and jeans. apparently this kind of thing happens when you pop into a cute boutique "to look for a mother's day gift". anyways, les the owner was so nice, and helped me pick out a few dresses to try on. i was there by myself, so i asked her opinion on how they looked, and i thought that she was honest in the fit/overall look, not just saying that everything looked great in order to try to push the sale. also she offered to do alterations, the straps on a great dress were just a little too long (but i ended up getting another one instead). for me, and probably for many fellow students, the clothing is a bit out of my price range for everyday items, but a DEFINITE for special occasions/splurges. lots of unique pieces! the accessories are also super cute and there's certainly more affordable pieces there. i'd love to go back whenever i need a unique gift for "mother's day" or "a friend's birthday." in case you're wondering, i DID actually get a mother's day gift as well, and les (knowing this was a gift, and without me asking) carefully wrapped it in teal tissue paper, and placed in a nice gift bag adorned with ribbons for me. read more

Leslie is a phenomenal person. To wit: she buys handmade, local stuff 99 percent of the time! She designs the clothing in the shop herself AND has it created in Chicago.
