I love this place! The only reason I took off a star is for lack of originality. It is your typical Mexican taqueria and there isn't anything special about it. That being said, we eat here a lot and the service is always great and the food is very tasty. Love their salsa as well as the green and red sauces they bring with the food. I'll keep it short: BEST chips and salsa I've ever had. I could eat them for my whole meal. The green sauce is very good and the orange sauce is warm and flavorful. I got the fajitas alambre, which I probably wouldn't get again. There was too much ham and it was too salty. A lot of the meat was too salty, but what can you do. My favorite thing was the sope, which I had never had before. Tacos: good. Tostada: very good, but too much sour cream. I removed half of it. GREAT VALUE. Portions are very generous. Prices are low. Nothing fancy about this place but the food can't be beaten. We usually eat in but delivery is reasonably fast. The tortas are my favorite but the quesadillas are hard to beat. Best Mexican food in town. Standard chips and salsa service. Nice comfortable atmosphere (with some very tacky decor) with a full view of the kitchen. There are some dishes that you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere. The quality of the taco buche and taco lengua are amazing. Fried meats served on two corn tortillas. Simple. Clean flavors and textures. Organ meats are where it's at. The culinary gems of flavor and texture overlooked in most American cuisine. Plus, as an American raised within these cultural confines, it feels great to step outside of my cultural comfort zone and experiment with new foods. To learn what it's all about: like the first raw oyster slurped or lobster cracked. These gems are what I find attractive in restaurants. The buche is good enough for seconds but not the best I've had, however the tongue is an extremely tender cut of meat that sells for ten times as much in a haute restaurant. For the uninitiated, it tastes like an extremely tender and juicy pot roast. Done right at Sr. Sol and absolutely amazing. Gorditas are pretty good. Tortas are good, they're like Cuban sandwiches almost. They have some more Americanized dishes on their menu. The burrito especial is a large tex-mex style burrito which I absolutely love and the fajita quesodilla is good as well. On the desert menu, the Sopapilla is pretty f*ing amazing. Huge. Sweet. We tried to order delivery from this restaurant--tried being the operative word. We were quoted a delivery time of 20 minutes. 45 minutes later, the food still had not arrived, so we called to ask about the status of our order. We were told at that point that we should have been quoted 50 minutes instead of 20. AN HOUR AND A HALF LATER, our food STILL had not arrived. After nearly 2 hours, we finally gave up and called the restaurant to cancel the order. Not even 30 seconds later, they called us back and told us that the driver was only one minute away from our house, but turned around, drove back to the restaurant, and would not be bringing our food. They called us back JUST to tell us that, after we waited two hours for an order that they told us would take 20 minutes. That's just not the way you treat a customer after you've already messed up their order so horribly. Their follow-up call to us can't really be interpreted as anything other than vindictiveness, seeing as how it's pretty much impossible, mathematically speaking, for their driver to have been anywhere close to our house and driven all the way back to the restaurant in under 30 seconds. This is hands down the WORST experience I have EVER had with a delivery order. I have never been treated so rudely as a customer in my life. I can't speak for the food because we never actually received it. My advice? Steer clear of this place. The service we received (or complete and total lack thereof in this case) was simply appalling. Favorite Mexican in Athens. We prefer the Tallassee location (original) but will visit the Atlanta Hwy one when we have a larger party. The food is delivered fast and usually accurate. Staff is friendly and polite. You get plenty to eat and shouldn't leave hungry. Our favorites are the Mexican Tacos, Tortas, and my wife loves the Pollo y arroz, which is grilled chicken over rice with queso. The only reason I don't rate it a 5 star is because of their take-out policy of not providing chips and salsa with the order. Every other Mexican restaurant I have ever frequented gives chips and salsa with every takeout order. If I am spending $20 or more dollars on most orders, seems like chips and salsa would be tossed in free of charge, not an additional $3. Parking and seating at the Tallassee location is very limited, so if you're looking for space, Atlanta Hwy is your place. I first visited this place when they opened on Tallassee about 10 years ago and have continued visit ever since. read more

In the five years I've lived in Athens, I've pretty thoroughly exhausted the standard run-of-the-mill Mexican options, and though I've always been pretty satisfied, I've also always desired to find a really great Mexican place. As such, my rating reflects the context of Athens - though El Sol would not blow the mind of anyone who's had really incredibly great Mexican food before, it is by far the best I've ever had in the area. Even standard items like the salsa (which is made fresh, and served with home-made picante) and refried beans have their own spin on them here, so you can safely order anything on the menu and expect it to be well-made. Of particular note are the mexican tacos, all of which that I've tasted have been delicious, particularly the barbacoa (barbecued beef; although my friend prefers the asada). Top that off with friendly service, and you get what's definitely the best Mexican food in town. My only caveat: the one time I've ordered the margaritas, it hardly seemed like there was any tequila in them at all. So if it's a night of drinking over chips and salsa that you're after, and not so much the excellent food, maybe not the best choice. Food-wise, though, definitely the best around. read more

a gloriously gluttonous experience! this place was slammin! the order: 1- carne asada taco 4 / 5* 1- lengua taco 3 / 5* 1- al pastor taco 4.5 / 5* 1- barbacoa taco 4.5 / 5* 1- big ol' (32oz?) dos equis, amber, draft 5 / 5* 1- to go churro 4 / 5* total:$15.71 (i could probably use a stomach pump for as much food as it was) the food was flavorful and well prepared. the carne asada had a light marinade which added to natural flavors of the meat. the lengua was very good, but not the best i have had. the lengua meat was fresh obviously, although the larger chunks confirm what you are actually eating. if you have never tried lengua (tongue), give it a try sometime. many Mexicans consider it a delicacy. the taste and texture is very much like a rich stewed beef that has simmered for hours. believe me, i was weary at first. the al pastor and barbacoa were simply superb! the barbacoa was a great grade of meat. flavor wise, it was not overly seasoned and sauced, which i really liked, but just enough. it tasted similar to carnitas. the al pastor was right up there with the best of them. flavorful cuts of pork with the perfect balance of spices. sometimes with al pastor you get greasy chunks of lard, but not here. each taco was served on two corn tortillas. the tortillas were obviously thrown on the griddle to warm. this gave the taco a minor crunch similar to a quesadilla. i would prefer my tortillas without any crisp. the tortillas were definitely made recently and lacked even the slightest hint of staleness. the churros were also very good and prepared fresh, although i havent had enough to make a fair assessment of how they rank against others. overall the food was in the top 90% of authentic Mexican restaurants i have eaten at along the east coast. the decor: on a scale from 1 to 10, in terms of appearance and atmosphere, i rate this place a 7; with 1 being a tex-mex joint, similar to "on the border", and a 10 being a pueblo with dirt floors, an open fire, and chickens running around. personally, i prefer a hole in the wall Taqueria, where only Spanish is spoken, and i stand out like a dude in victoria secrets. the first thing you will notice is the restaurant is attached to the shell station, yet very well maintained from the outside. the parking lot was slammed full. cars were over the curb, parking in the grass. this is always a very good indicator as to the quality and freshness of the food. the inside would best be described as a Mexican waffle house. there was bar seating over looking the grill area, a small fully stocked bar area, and booth seating throughout.... although i didn't see it, in true waffle house fashion, i would imagine there would be a jute box loaded with Latin hits from the 80's and 90's tucked in the corner. the staff was friendly and everyone spoke in English. normally i question the authenticity of Mexican restaurants that have a surplus of gringos, but i was very glad i stopped in. read more

We since I had to go to Athens today, I decided to see what yelpers thought was good there. Yup...y'all are right! Hurray! Good Mexican this side of the Mississippi! The only thing I didn't care for was the chicken flautas. Was more like chicken leather in a crunchy shell. But everything else was wonderful, from the chips and hot sauce, queso, tea, margaritas, chili rellenos, tacos, beans, rice, all was wonderful! I tried a bite of my daughter's fajitas, with steak, chorizo and carnitas. Wonderful. And super fast! The prices are great too. But yes, it's a divy feel, and it's attached to a gas station. It's a little cramped too, but the food is so good, who cares. The serving staff are super nice and attentive. It was just a very pleasurable experience. We will be back for sure. read more

EAT. HERE. NOW. So after poking around Yelp looking for a new, semi-adventurous new place to compromise between me (try darn near anything once) and my husband (not so much), we settled on the restaurant formerly known as Sr Sol, at least on the sign. When you get there, you know right off that you are either about to have a truly fabulous experience or a truly terrible one. It's a Waffle House/Huddle House or whatever gone south of the border, and frankly quite badly. Extra points for sequined sombreros and fake buckets of Corona! The service is friendly, attentive, and unobtrusive, or in other words, just about perfect. Which brings me to the part where you really need to eat here. Seriously. You get the requisite chips and salsa, only nothing like you've ever had. The standard salsa is frankly kind of watery and uninteresting, like every other place in the world. However, they also bring you two squirt bottles that will rock your world. One is red and fiery and vinegary, which rehabs the tomato-water in a bowl quite nicely (I can only assume that's the point because otherwise it's a little too much on the vinegar), but the green sauce is simply STUNNING. Perfect on the spice meter, just dangerous enough to be interesting since you get the occasional eye-watering heat pocket, with just a hint of avocado danging around the periphery. We ordered a container to go, and they threw in a bag of chips, so it was, quite literally, all that and a bag of chips, to resurrect a phrase that likely should rest in peace. And then they brought me a margarita and I don't remember much else. I didn't get drunk, if that's what you're thinking; that's when the pure food intoxication started. The frozen with salt was fabulous, not too much tequila, not too little lime, no dreaded ice chunks of death. I had a sope, gordita, and taco de lengua. The sope and gordita were pastor and carnitas, but I can't remember which was which, nor can I remember what my husband ate other than it was filled with barbacoa. I did not put an unhappy bite in my mouth, then or later when I finished the five pounds of leftovers we brought home because we couldn't stop eating the chips and green sauce. In our quest to become truly ill, we also had the fried ice cream. It was not the run-away best I've ever had, but it was very good. We will be back. Once we've recovered. Oh, and the check was ridiculously small both for volume and quality. Impressive on all fronts. read more

Our food was cold, they overcharged us for food that was not in the bag, and didn't even try to apologize for the inconvenience. The Sr. Sol on broad is the best, but this one on Talahassee Rd is by far the WORST restaurant in business. This place is indeed as good as it gets, for the genre of Mexican food offered. Fresh ingredients, very clean venue, friendly faces, and a red and green sauce that are not only good but unique. I got a burrito with pastor, with a side of guacamole. The guacamole has a decent amount of lime juice, but the lime juice is fresh, so no problem. My partner got a torta with steak. Their bread, whether homemade or not, seems to be. It's possible they buy it from a nearby bakery. I was afraid I wouldn't find places like this after moving here from Houston. Do not be disuaded by the Shell Station!! This is the best Mexican restaurant in Athens hands down. The veggie tortas is addictive. Reasonable prices, super friendly staff, and delicious!!
