Growing up it was easier to find speciality stores like this one selling meats and pantry items you generally find in the south. This is one of the few stores left where you can buy items like country ham, homemade sage sausages, ham steaks, souse and a variety of condiments like Dukes mayonnaise. Phenomenal grits and an assortment of dry goods. I picked up slab bacon and some lovely ham steaks today. read more

I bought a chittering loaf, some slab bacon, liver pudding, sage sausage and smoked pigtails everything I bought had a weird smell to it almost as if they stored everything in the same refrigerator and it picked up flavors and smells from whatever it was in the refrigerator. The liver pudding was absolutely disgusting. The sage, hot sausage had not one piece of sage in it or hot peppers at all it cooked it up weird it was almost on the verge of being sour the chitlins loaf smelled like it had a little twang like it could've been a sour note not a funky smell, but a sour smell. I spent $43 for me and my mother e got some of the same things. She spent $48 a total waste of money they must get their refrigerator system. In order They must start packing and storing their food in separate sealed containers cause everything smelled the same,. and to add insult to injury, we live all the way in Manhattan on Central Park West so we're not in Brooklyn often Chitlin loaf had almost no chitlins hog mogs and pig ears was the main source of the so called Chitlin loaf.yuck! I want a refund cause I still have the meats. Babeeeeee let me tell you... I was on my way home when I glanced over and actually saw someone going into Carolina Country Store. Now I never knew this place was actually open because I never saw anyone going in or out. I past by EVERYDAY! But today was THE. DAY. I saw a woman going in and decided to search on my maps while walking, just to give it a gander. A review came up about hog head cheese and when I tell you I practically ran across the street.... lol. I got me 6 pieces of hog head cheese, a few pieces of old school candies, and a huge smoked turkey wing. The owner Shawna was very friendly and personable. Trust me, I will be back. This spot was literally a whole experience! From the moment I walked in the vibe was so warm and friendly. I just moved to NY and when I told the owner, she gave me a whole tour of the neighborhood. This store literally has everything that I can't find anywhere else. My family makes me come all the way to Brooklyn just for the country ham and sage sausage. I walked in this morning because I wanted some original Hog head cheese from my youth at my grandparents house on Johns Island, Charleston, SC. I walked in and realized that this place reminded me of my grandparents juke joint. I was besides myself. Anything from slab bacon, to the bologna, to bbq'd pulled pork, the Country Store has it. Brooklyn is so much more than brownstone stoops, sidewalk hogging designer strollers, and an affected love for beer that, frankly, I consider to be swill. Yes, I'm referring to Bud and PBR. But I digress. So yeah, this place definitely falls under the category of that ever popular Yelp cliche, 'hidden gem.' Unless you happen to live nearby, you've either got to have wheels or be pretty intrepid to make the trek here. But having stopped in twice now, I can honestly say the Sage Sausage Sandwiches are something special: On our first visit, hubby and I fell completely in love with this Sandwich, but like I said, it's a schlep to get here. Anyway, when we finally returned, the Sage Sausage was every bit as delicious as I'd remembered. We're talking savory, fatty, juicy, and herby, with a satisfying snap when you bite into it. The last time we were here, I remember it being served with a slice of soft white bread. This time we got hot dog buns. I kind of missed that bread, which acted like a sponge for all those meaty juices. Still, for a mere $2.50 (if memory serves), this is one delicious sandwich! This time around, we also picked up some raw Sage Sausage, which they sell by the pound ($4.99 per) and a small bottle of Cane Syrup ($5.00). If we didn't already have Pimiento Cheese, I would have snagged some of that too. Ditto for thick-cut Bacon. Service was very gracious and friendly. Indeed. This feels like a beloved community hub where people go to kibbitz and stock up on favorite Southern staples like Duke's Sandwich Spread and Chow Chow. Pro Tip: When we stopped in, we were told the Sausages were not fully cooked and that we'd have to wait about 20 minutes until they were ready. The homemade sausage, souse and other prepared things are great, as it the smattering of packaged goods not usually available in New York groceries. Ironically, it seems to be getting harder and harder to find this type of store in many increasingly populated southern towns and cities, as the Krogers and Wal-Marts become the main food dispensaries. You can still find many products that would be esoteric in New York but you gotta go to a big box grocery to buy them. It still amazes me that it is virtually impossible to find country ham in New York City aside from absurdly random sources like Dean and DeLuca or Momofuko. Bravo that you can find it here. A barometer of the decrease in "down home" shopping is the shrinking presence of country ham in southern chain food stores. Twenty years ago, many places had a phony "shack" display at the back of the store stocked with country ham, bacon, hog jowls and salt pork, cut and packaged in various ways. Over 30+ years of travel to southern towns and cities I have witnessed the gradual disappearance of the country meat "shack," often replaced by a small section of the meat case. Sadly, this section also seems to be shrinking, and many stores now carry only country ham sliced 2-3 different ways. This place is a treasure, and it is in Brooklyn. Friend took me to this store while I was in Brooklyn to taste the hog head cheese it was absolutely delicious I brought some back to LA with me along with some hot sausage I wish they shipped. Next time I'm in Brooklyn I'll come back to get more hog head cheese and sausage hopefully they will have the chitlin loaf. The owner and staff very nice. read more

The place to come for scrapple-like snoot-to-tail pork products that you take home, fry up and spread. I come here for the two-dollar sage sausage sandwich that is not unlike a Chicago hot link. Make sure to get it with chow chow, which is kind of like Southern picalilli. read more
