i had a fantastic time at St Charles Place in Downieville. it's one of the only places that was open during my stay. the staff was friendly and the locals were a hoot. i love how the bar was decorated and how customers get to control the music. additionally, playing pool is so much cheaper here than the town i am from. the cider i tried at this bar was delicious and surprisingly high alcohol content. yum. overall, i had such a great time during the hours i spent at this bar during my trip. i'll never forget the memories i made here. read more

I like that I could use my phone and control the music that's pretty cool. Everybody here is very laid-back very cool. And I also like that I'm not judged because I do not drink, I'm given my soda water with lime with a smile Not sure what's going on with the lady in the window but I suppose there's a story behind it maybe one day I'll ask, I'm kind of scared to ask maybe I don't wanna know. It was a brief visit, just long enough to sit down with a couple of locals for a beer after selling them some equipment. St. Charles Place is charming, the beer cold, the bartender friendly and the local clientele nothing short of hospitable and overall lovely people. We sat on the patio overlooking the river and shot the ish for a bit. Big 'ole Brutus (the huge shepherd that lives there?) came by for a visit as well. Great vibe in this place! read more

Steve was sweet and made good convo with me while I was chillin here waiting for the guys to come off the mountain. He let me bring my puppy in. They have this Gold digger IPA that was bomb and you can order food next door at Jadas Kitchen and eat at the bar. They also have a sweet deck area with views of the Yuba river where you can drink amd smoke. When I come back to Downieville we will fersure come back and hangout with Steve. read more

All the stars for being one of the most authentic places in the all around category...for the history and decor, long wood bar, pool table, back patio looking over the river, being able to get phone reception -[only 2 bars but better than none like the surrounding area..not saying that is bad..just that one needs to check for emergency messages every few days or so while way out here] people are really friendly and the bartender made a nice patron margarita on the rocks. it was relaxing sitting in the window, next to the natural history display of wild geese and old glass bottles, looking out at the passerby's passing by. The St. Charles Place is a real piece of old town history indeed. read more

Interesting list of frozen bar foods (the hot pocket came in handy for dinner when the rest of town had already shut down for the night...). Bloody Mary was average. Definitely appreciate the bartender staying open 30mins later for us to have a 2nd round of drinks and pool on a Monday night. I believe it's the only bar in town. The patio is my favorite part though as it overlooks the scenery. read more

You don't deserve five stars by any means; however, it was hot as hell when Downieville hosted the Hot Rod show and Poker Run and this was the ONLY spot in town to get a mixed drink! For that reason alone I'm giving you five stars. If I am ever back in Downieville (don't hold your breath) I will re-visit my thoughts and see if I still feel this generous! read more

Great old period miner's bar with atmospheric pictures of beautiful prostitutes, and cool old gun collections on the walls. Great jukebox with all your favorites. But watch out for the local pool sharks as the table ain't exactly level! Robin makes a great cocktail, serves a very cold beer, will chat you up and warn you off the microwave snacks. There's an excellent chef with an exceptional little restaurant next door called the Highway 49 Eatery that deliverers delicious roast beef and salmon dinners right to you at the bar. Basically, once seated at the St Charles, you never have to move! On a serious note, the Owners would appreciate the return of the Mona Lisa painting stolen during a mountain biking gathering last month, no questions asked! Fun, historic place in a fun, historic town. One of the best burgers I've ever had. New owner (Big) Steve is a gentleman and great burger chef. Maggie was the bartender the night we were there and she was efficient and good. Cool place, albeit pretty local, at least in the off season. But the locals are nice and very inviting. Really authentic, historic and period correct bar and back bar. Excellent deck right over the Yuba river out back. Look for the big German Shepard who likes to laze around. A good place in a town which has very little to choose from for eats in the off season. Check it out! read more

The meeting spot for the town and their main nightlife gathering spot. Great bartender and he had the last World Cup game for the USA on their big screen. I was very happy to find this friendly, bar to hangout and have a few cold beers to lessen the agony of the game. Once I decided I had enough, he was kind enough to keep the water flowing freely for me. This was also a great experience to meet more of the local people. Overall a very friendly welcoming town. It was also entertaining to see some real characters coming and going and how professionally the bartender handled everyone. I recommend this place for the chance to see a part of the town history and a central part of the community, as well as drinks and local company. read more

St Charles Place is one of the places you have to see if you are ever in the area. It is worth the drive to see the town of Downieville. The atmosphere is great and a good stop to relax and have a drink. You will enjoy looking over the interior of the bar area and its decorations. read more
