St. James is always delicious. They've changed their menu since I last visited, so I welcomed returning to this Modern Caribbean restaurant to meet a friend who was in visiting from out of town. The service was amazing. Both the server and hostess checked on us throughout the night, and the bartender recommended a drink based on my preference for rum or whiskey. The drink perfectly paired with the meal, so much so that I ordered two. Both of the appetizers that we shared at the table were delicious, but the Crab Accras (seasoned perfectly) were my favorite over the Cassava Fritters. I ordered the Not Your Mother's Crab & Dumplings with a side of Collard Greens which were both perfection. My only complaint is that the server made it seem as though the Not Your Mother's Crab & Dumplings was not filling, so I ordered the collards as well. I had plenty of food. The Crab dish was filling, and the collards were seasoned perfectly, and without meat. I could taste the coconut milk in the greens which were so delicious. I went home with leftovers and a full belly. Will definitely make sure less time passes before I return to St. James. read more

I enjoy the food at St. James! This was my second time dining. The food is consistently good! The coconut milk greens and the squash salad were both well-seasoned and delicious. The squash salad was a surprise hit due to the great combo flavor of the jerk and the curry dressing. Very nice! The cassava fritters are always great and I also enjoyed those! Our server Joshua was great. The only issue was the host had to close us out quickly to make room for another reservation that was booked for the table where we were sitting. It was very rushed and we didn't even want to stay at the bar, nor was that offered as an option, so we left. My friend was visiting from out of town and that left a bad impression on her because she hadn't yet finished drinking the coffee she ordered. Had a fantastic meal here on a recent weekend visit to see our daughter. Reservations are preferred, but we were walk-ups and were lucky enough to get the last table on their cute little outside patio space. Our server was a bit absent minded, so the entire meal experience took much longer than anticipated, but the food quality more than made up for this minor inconvenience. I also noticed they have a nice looking Happy Hour menu (Tu-Th from 5:30-7:00pm) so may have to return and take advantage of that offer! My wife and I shared several dishes...a watermelon salad, jerk wings and finally a beef brisket dinner plate. The salad had a lovely presentation on the plate, ringed with watermelon slices that had been marinated and then topped with peppery arugula leaves, chunks of jicama, corn, pumpkin seeds and a tart citrus dressing. The jerk wings were absolutely killer...smoked with a spicy rub on top and served with a creamy remoulade style sauce for dipping and cooling. Finally, the slow-n-low smoked beef brisket that was so tender you could easily cut it with a fork! Slices were topped with a rich sauce that accentuated the cut of meat. It came with sides of fried, sticky plantains and a macaroni pie akin to mac-n-cheese that was piping hot and ohhh so gooey delicious! Had a great birthday dinner at St. James! I was greeted and sat right away. The space is small, but cozy. The lighting makes for a romantic vibe. We started the dinner with the jerk wings and crab accras (both on happy hour at the time we went) and both were delicious! The accras are a must in my opinion. Staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. The jerk wings were tender but spicy. The pressed chicken was also tender but lacked seasoning. This was extremely bland and had a lot of gristle. I never pass up the opportunity to eat Trinidadian food. Born and raised in Trinidad, I must say I thoroughly enjoyed my first time dining at St. James Modern Caribbean. The drinks were PHENOMENAL, the food was flavorful and made me feel like I was at home. Definitely a 10/10 experience for me. The bar Director, Joseph Grimshaw, was so knowledgeable in his craft, he made two of the most delicious cocktails I've ever had. I tried a mix from the crab dumplings (a spicy kick I did not expect, rich crab meat, hearty curry stock) to the greens (nice subtle milky flavor, well cooked), via the maitake masala (sweet) and the plantains (so so good, a sweet caramelized sauce over the not too gooey fruit). The server probably brought us four carafes of water (we were thirsty). Although the plantains were a dessert in themselves, I finished with the rum cake (I didn't taste too much banana in the ice cream but everything I tasted, I liked). A lot of the items mention coconut milk but I was happy to find the coconut flavor not to be overpowering (as someone who is not a huge fan of coconut). Finally had the chance to check out St James and it did not disappoint! From being seated in a timely fashion to great wait service from Tim, this Valentine's date night out with my wife will be one to remember. The food was good and fresh, really loved the flavor profiles and the vibes inside the restaurant was dope! We started with the Aloo and Channa Pies and the cassava fritters, but bites very tasty and the accompanying sauces were great choices. For our main course we shared the Paratha Roti Platter and side sampler, this was great as we were able to taste a little of the Caribbean cuisine and cooking skills of the chef and team. If you haven't had St. James, run there now! The pepper shrimp is divine! Everything is cooked perfectly and pairs well with the seafood sauce. Now, the black rice is a node to Haitian Djon Djon. It's not entirely authentic, but still delicious. My husband enjoyed the smoked brisket. This also packs a kick. This comes with their macaroni pie and sweet plantains. Both were amazing. The plantains were perfectly charred and served with a drizzle of caramel. Their most popular appetizer is the aloo and chana pies. It's a fried, chewy dough stuffed with potatoes and chickpeas. A Love-Hate Relationship with My Go-To Caribbean "Fusion" Spot. If you're Caribbean and you know Caribbean food, let me help you manage your expectations before visiting St. James. This is a Caribbean fusion spot. It is not authentic. So please don't walk in expecting rich, traditional island flavor. You might get it... but only if the kitchen is having a good day. I've probably ordered from here a hundred times. No exaggeration. I go back weekly because, honestly, no one else in DC has callaloo, and I need my greens. But let's be real. I'm not going because it's the best. I'm going because supply is low and my cravings are high. The most frustrating part? Inconsistency. One day the jerk wings and callaloo are absolute perfection. Flavorful, juicy, everything seasoned with intention. The next? Bland, dry, and tasting like someone forgot the recipe and just prayed over it. Sometimes the wings are tender and smoky. Other times, they're dry with no real kick. And I swear the callaloo has tasted watered down more than once. Like they ran out and tried to stretch it with vibes. Let's talk about the accras. I've ordered them 3 times and all 3 times I was disappointed. Barely any saltfish inside. Mostly filler. They're skimping. And that wouldn't be so bad if the flavor made up for it, but it doesn't. It's giving hushpuppy energy with a Caribbean name. And while we're here, let's clear up a situation that rubbed me the wrong way. I once dined in during happy hour and ordered the accras off the happy hour menu. The server brought me what turned out to be the full-sized portion, charged me full price, and then tried to argue that I ordered off the regular menu. Sir, why would I order full-price accras during HAPPY HOUR? Make it make sense. He was young, clearly not trained well, and the whole thing felt sneaky. But I will say, the man who's always there -- the main guy who runs the floor -- is lovely. He's kind, warm, and professional every single time. He's honestly one of the main reasons I keep coming back. The macaroni pie is not pie. It's pasta with cheese. No island auntie would co-sign that. The greens need serious work. Plantains are just okay. The platters are mid. The drinks? Fine. Nothing to write home about, but they get the job done. Now, credit where credit is due. The coconut rice is phenomenal every time. Fluffy, flavorful, and the only thing on the menu that hasn't let me down yet. Also, I love the ambiance. The decor is gorgeous, the space feels warm and elevated, and they play Soca and dancehall which makes me feel like I'm back home for a second. The vibes are on point. So why three stars? Because I do keep going back. That callaloo has a chokehold on me. But I say this with love. If you grew up on real Caribbean food, just know you're walking into a remix. The service was great, even with our server being extremely busy. There's two floors. I ordered the Brisket plate that came with the mac and cheese and greens. The restaurant has a contemporary decor and moderately sized for this area of DC. The servers were friendly and did an incredible job of managing the crowded restaurant without an extended wait. Craft cocktails are not my usual experience at Caribbean restaurants but St. James has extensive menu of drinks. However, the food was the real hit with me. I had the Duck and Dhal which was absolutely delicious, the leg is tender and full of flavor. We shared a side sampler of coconut rice, greens and plantains each was great. St. James was on my short list for a while and I was finally able to make a reservation during winter restaurant week. From the moment I was it, every staff member made me feel like I was at home. They were all so warm and friendly which was a great shift from the winter cold. We were seated upstairs in a location that overlooked the 1st floor of the restaurant. Very romantic and elegant. The food was pretty good and very fast service. But fast to the point that you know it's pre made which isn't an issue but the foods temperature made you know it had been sitting out for awhile. I like my food to be hot not warm semi cold. The greens were decent , the oxtail was perfect very flavorful and of course fall of the bone and the rice is good as well. They have increased the lunch price by maybe $10 since February which is a bit annoying since there's nothing extra on the plate. The sorrel margarita is the most beautiful drink in the world if I could get a gallon of just the sorrel to take home I would. Super refreshing not sweet but also not bitter. The service was great super sweet server. They do charge you 20% to give I think health insurance and they make it clear that it's not a tip. I think they should just pay their workers better the prices increase but you aren't able to pay your workers ? Doesn't make sense. Outside of my mom's cooking, this is top 3 best carribean restaurants I've ever been to in my life period. I recommend you make a reservation here because this spot can fill up pretty quickly. That's what I did and we were able to walk right in and be seated. The service here is great, and the people are so down to earth. I wish I was better with names and remembered the name of my server. He had me cracking up lol. He did a great job with helping us navigate the menu and giving great recommendations. The food was out of this world! The jerk wings were bomb. She usually stays away from them because they're usually too spicy for her, but we both tore it up. We ate ALL of the sweet plantains. Reminded me of my mom's when I was a kid. The black rice tasted like it was made by Haitians lol. I'm haitian, and I was actually impressed that they even had it on the menu. My only issue with it is that they charge $12 for it, and it's a small portion. I've had bigger portions of black rice at haitian restaurants and paid half of what they charged here. This is my second trip to St. James and once again they did not disappoint! I came for my birthday back in March with a party of 8, and returned tonight to celebrate my cousin's anniversary with another party of 8. I had the same server both times and Randal was awesome! He gives great recommendations, and everyone enjoyed their food. The oxtails fall off the bone and are perfectly seasoned, the coconut rice is delish, the jerk wings were good and not too spicy, crab cake and cassava fritters were delish. My wife had the watermelon salad, which was ridiculously good, just look at it! Others in our group had the pepper shrimp and brisket which they said were amazing. Lastly, the atmosphere is a good vibe. They play great music and it felt comfortable. Sometimes when you have a big group you feel rushed, but we were able to take our time and they gave the couple a complimentary dessert! I got the same on my birthday.
