I stopped by during the lunch rush and they were pretty packed, but I had ordered my food online, so thankfully it was ready when I arrived. The restaurant was very clean. Overall, the food was decent. I ordered the jerk wings and the brown stew chicken with rice and peas and cabbage. The wings were a nice size, not too large, which is exactly how I prefer them. The brown stew chicken wasn't bad either, and everything was solid overall. I'd definitely say this is a solid Jamaican spot. That said, I will probably forever be chasing the truly authentic Jamaican food I've had while actually in Jamaica, so my bar may be a little unfairly high. read more

I can see why Jam Doung Style has been around for 25 years! This is the first Jamaican restaurant I've tried since moving to the DMV, and it just might be the only one I stick with. It has a vibrant and rustic Jamaican feel to it, with plenty of space to dine in and listen to music while you eat. The ladies working the front counters were amazing, even nice enough to let me use a phone charger. The portions and prices are reasonable. I ordered a medium oxtail which came with two sides (they had a rice and mac and cheese option for a couple of dollars extra) and cabbage. The oxtails were meaty and reminded me of what I would always order back in Jersey. The rice and cabbage were plentiful, but the mac really surprised me. It was super cheesy and moist. This place kicks out some bona fide Jamaican and American cooking. Their jerk is just how I like it. It's got the right balance of the bazillion ingredients that go into jerk, and also, it's been rested properly, making a deeply flavorful marinade rather than one which is overly peppery. There are 2 types of jerk chicken platters offered: dark meat and white meat, a nice option for customers. Their mac n' cheese is what really surprised me. It's top notch-- creamy, cheesy, crusty. It makes me want to call home and talk to mom. The cabbage side is very tasty and I'm certainly not a cooked cabbage person at all, so it's got to be exceptional for me to write that. It had years since I had last ordered from Jam Doung, so I was so happy to see they were still in business. Since my mom is Jamaican, I usually just stick to getting my fix from her kitchen or family and friends' that cook Jamaican food as well. But on Juneteenth, I was being extra intentional to support Black-owned businesses that I may not always frequent and Jam Doung was a great option! First, I was so impressed by their portions. I ordered the snapper entree which was brimming with fish, mac and rice and pea. All of the food was delicious, although the rice and pea was on the dry side.But there was so much food, I was able to stretch this one entree into two meals - dinner and lunch the day! My husband wanted curried chicken, so it was suggested he order Brown stew chicken with some curry sauce on top. He liked it, and the rice and peas too. I had a patty and a ginger beer. Ordered off of Uber Eats... it was terrible. Seriously. i always have heard great things about Jam Doung Style and wanted to try it out since my usual Jamaican spot, Negril, had closed. Nope. Nope. Nope. I ordered a beef patty, mac & cheese, a jerk hot dog and a sorrel. Firstly, the bag the sorrel came in had its juice spilled in the bag. Sorrel has a strong taste, but this one had a strong alcohol type taste to it. Very unbalanced in flavor. The first bite i took out of the beef patty was just breading and no meat filling. The jerk hot dog just tasted like a mildly spicy hot dog with not a hint of jerk flavor. The biggest disappointment was the mac & cheese. As soon as i opened the container, i could see it was DRY. i gave it the benefit of the doubt and tried it. it tasted just how it looked -- bland. Jam Doung style is a trusty local source for Jamaican food. I've enjoyed the food I've gotten from here more often than not. I would actually give it more like 4.5 stars, but there is no way to rate half stars in Yelp. Their meat patties are delicious and so is their plantain. One of my favorite dishes is the oxtail with beans and rice ('rice and peas'). I used to go here for lunch everyday during some period of the quarantine. It helps that it's within walking distance of me. Their new digs are really nice and I'm glad to have them in the neighborhood. The beef patty is delicious and my favorite of their patties, but the chicken patty is good too. I have gotten some things from here at that haven't been as delicious as I'm used to them being when I typically get them from here, but thankfully, my usual experience is that the food is great. Was told that this is one of those native-to-DC must try places, I can tell they have been there often and they're family-owned. Upon our pick-up delivery its become apparent that since Jam Doung Style has offered take-out options online, its really swarmed the place to just pump out a lot of food, and with all this traction that is great and of course, well deserved for a long-standing brick and mortar restaurant who has not commercialized and has maintained reasonably affordable food to its locals and DC customers. However, with this comes the need for there to be a re-evaluation of the quality of food that is coming out of the restaurant. Granted we ordered dishes traditionally made with bone in proteins and ordered about 2.5 hours before closing, but our plates made their weight in bones. And with special order of gravy had fully been absorbed the rice rather than sitting and flavoring the meat. I imagine by the end of the night, all of the bones have broken down and reached the end of the pot, which is probably where we got our portions. However, the prospect of ordering curry and oxtail should always be exciting and celebratory! Why give a customer only bones? I would imagine this is a product of just having too many orders come in that you just have to get those deliverables out of the way, especially since now the in-person experience with Jam Doung Style is mostly occupied by takeout delivery services. That said, the flavors were so good and left us wanting more, and it was definitely worth a re-try, maybe towards the beginning of the day but that's good to know now. Coco bread was light and fluffy but smashed by the aluminum packaging at the bottom of our delivery bag. Plantains were perfectly fried with a gooey sweet bright golden interior. Restaurant has been renovated in recent years to include more space and some indoor seating compared to the smaller carry-out only location it has been. Food: My husband and I have only ever ordered their jerk chicken platters. The 'small' portion is more than enough for us. I usually get the 'small' portion to include jerk chicken, cabbage, and rice and peas. My husband orders the same, but sometimes chooses to get mac&cheese instead of cabbage. It's always delicious; however, there has been a few times where one of us has found a bay leaf in our food. While it is easy to take them out, I believe it should be taken out before customers are given their order because they are not supposed to be eaten and could be a significant choking hazard for someone not paying attention while eating. They do offer some deserts as well, but I've never tried them. Service: Good yet could be improved to include another person at the front. Every time we've gone, there is usually an older Jamaican woman and I believe her granddaughter working at the front end of the restaurant taking orders via walk-in, phone, or bagging up orders for Uber Eats and the likes. During lunch time, it can take pretty much someone's entire lunch period to get a meal in hand. Value: Approx $10-$20 per meal. Great value for the amount of food, in my opinion. However, they charge an extra percentage (I believe 4%), to anyone paying with a card instead of cash. Personally, this makes the experience less pleasant for me because in 2024 many people do not carry cash, and why is it that high? Ambiance: Busy restaurant so expect the phone to keep ringing and a constant flow of customers. During our last trip in Sept 2024, R&B music was playing and the videos to the songs were playing on a tv. My husband and I dined in and ate at a small 2 person table downstairs. They now have upstairs seating, but it always seems to be closed off so I'm not sure if that's for large parties only or not. I feel scammed. I ordered the Brown Stew Chicken, and while I understand bone-in chicken is standard, there was barely any meat. The cooking was inconsistent. The oxtails were the highlight of my meal. They were cooked very well and practically fell off the bone. The beef patty was amazing with a great amount of spice, which I loved as a fan of spicy foods. However, the curry chicken was underwhelming. It lacked the spice factor I enjoy and was slightly dry. I prefer my curry chicken to have more juices to slather over the rice for better flavor. The cabbage was fairly soggy and not enjoyable. The macaroni was good, but the rice and peas were not to my taste. In the future, I'll definitely opt for white rice instead. Too cold to go out yesterday so ordered delivery from Jam Doung Style on a whim. As a Caribbean person in the DMV, I am always looking for good restaurants with food that reminds me of home. This place was spot on!! I ordered the small oxtail lunch with a side of Mac n cheese. Everything was seasoned perfectly, down to the cabbage and potatoes. The meat was tender and flavorful. I paid the extra charge for extra gravy, but what I got seemed like a normal coating of gravy. But the overall price for the meal was not bad. The reason for 4 stars is that there is always a risk with delivery orders because you can't check the food before you leave the establishment. So, while the food was delicious, I was disappointed with only 3 pieces of oxtail, 2 of which barely had meat on it. Had I been able to open the container there, I would have complained. Haven't visited this place in so long but its always been so good. But this visit was underwhelming and I am a little disappointed. I got the BBQ WINGS MAC AND CABBAGE and my mom had the CURRY SHRIMP RICE & PEAS AND CABBAGE. The wings were pretty good but the Mac just needed salt & pepper and a sharp cheese. The rice was over cooked and the cabbage as well. I came for jerk wings but they were sold out so I got jerk sauce on the side. The shrimp were inconsistent texture wise, some were mushy and some were rubbery. The pineapple ginger drink was good just super sweet. I also had a beef pattie and it was literally 2teaspoons of beef inside I was shocked. We paid $53 together for the food and just wish the quality was more consistent like it was before. I hosted a mixed group of about 30 guests from various backgrounds (including my very picky Jamaican family!), and everyone raved about the food for weeks afterward. Every single dish was perfectly seasoned, beautifully presented, and clearly made with a lot of love and care. Let me start off by saying, how did I not know about this spot YEARS ago. Located off of N. Capitol st. NW. Directly under a dispensary (Bob Marley would love it), lies a hidden gem, Jam Doung Style. I walked in one afternoon to place a takeout order. I was greeted by two older women who were nice enough (if you frequent Caribbean restaurants, you know what I mean. Lol). I placed my order and sat in the dining area and waited. The spot is small, but does have a few tables that you can sit and enjoy your food. I ordered the combo platter with curry goat, oxtail, rice & peas, and cabbage. I also ordered one of their all natural juices that they offer (ginger/pineapple). I should've shook the juice up before I tried it, because the first sip was just straight ginger! I sealed it back and gently mixed the contents before taking another sip (MUCH better), the sweetness of the pineapple cut the sharp bite of the ginger. They had so many other flavors, I have to go back and try some others. The curry goat....the savory and slight spice of the curry gravy was so good, the goat meat itself was a little tough, but the gravy almost made it worth it (I can't wait to go back and try the curry shrimp). The oxtail was so good. Almost melts in your mouth, the gravy from the oxtail was delicious as well, especially once it mixed in with the rice and peas. Overall I would give this experience a 8.7/10.
