Was incredibly shitty. ER was understaffed and slow. I was there from 9am-3:30pm. I was put in a chair and basically left to sit all day.

If you value your sanity, your time, or the basic concept of honesty, do yourself a favor and go to literally any other hospital ER. The ER at St. Joseph Mercy in Pontiac is a masterclass in being understaffed and overwhelmed. The wait times are beyond frustrating -- you'll sit for hours watching people age in real time. And the wild part is, the nurses and doctors are actually great... when you finally see one. But that's where the good news ends. Because God forbid you get admitted. Once you hit that stage, the staff suddenly transforms every answer to room availability to "soon." In the St Mercy Joseph dictionary, "soon" is defined as "sometime between now and the next presidential administration." It feels like they dangle the promise of a room in front of you like the fisherman in the State Farm commercial. It's exhausting. It's disrespectful. And it's absolutely avoidable...by going anywhere else. Bottom line: If you need emergency care, skip this place. Drive, crawl, jog, horseback ride, Uber, teleport -- whatever it takes -- to any other hospital ER. Your time and your nerves will thank you. read more

ER took a long time, but once I was admitted, I was taken great care of. My room was a single and the floor was quiet.The transportation team was great getting me to my tests. The nurses worked very hard and showed a lot of compassion. The meals were OK once you figured out what menu items were decent. read more

I recently visited the emergency department at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital with my wife and our 8-month-old daughter because we were concerned she wasn't swallowing her saliva properly. The check-in process went smoothly -- they took her weight, temperature, and height, and we sat in the waiting area for about 5-10 minutes before being called back. When we were called, the staff member who took us back to triage was an African American woman presenting in a more masculine manner (not sure her exact title). She brought us into the triage area, but I didn't feel comfortable having our infant around other patients who might be sick. During a previous visit, we were placed in a separate room for this exact reason, so I politely asked if we could do that again. Instead of understanding or explaining the situation calmly, she responded in a rude and dismissive tone, saying something like, "Weren't y'all just sitting by people in the lobby?" I explained that we had been keeping our distance and again requested a separate room for our baby's safety. She then said "no" in an aggressive manner. When I asked to speak with a supervisor, she refused and told us, "You can get treated or you can leave." I found this behavior extremely unprofessional and disrespectful, especially when dealing with concerned parents and an infant. We came in seeking care, not conflict. I hope the hospital takes this feedback seriously, as no parent should feel dismissed or talked down to when trying to protect their child's health. read more

I just have to say that EVERY SINGLE STAFF MEMBER that was involved in my care and now my newborn baby's care in the NICU has gone above and beyond what I could ever wish for. My situation was scary and due to some health concerns It was necessary to have a c-section and have my baby early. All of the staff here involved had compassion, was very knowledgeable, genuinely caring and just unbelievably wonderful! I will never be able to fully express my gratitude for them all. The hospital accommodations were also better than my previous experience giving birth at a hospital elsewhere. I have every bit of confidence that my baby is taken care of well and plenty of reassurance 24 hours a day when I want to call. I highly recommend this facility and their staff. read more

Two consecutive horrible experiences. I have COVID-19 and severe persistent asthma with lung volume of 40%. They were dismissive and rude and uncaring- they didn't have space in a COVID-19 area, so I got stuck in observation and told I was forbidden from using the nebulizer meds that are the only thing that helps. Nurses were rude, uncaring, lacking compassion. My husband had to pick me up off the floor to bring me in to this ER - I should have stayed on the floor at home. Zero stars would be appropriate. The ER is overcrowded and short staffed, but I also did an 8 day stint in 6E for suicidal ideation and attempt, and as far as psych wards go, it was not bad. The lack of soap was gross (body wash is not hand soap!), and I HATED the communal showers (ew), but the staff was friendly and the food was pretty good. Overall, it was a break that I obviously needed, and they reset my meds to be more what I needed, so that was nice. The last place I'd been at was Havenwyck, so this was obviously exponentially better, lol. I also used to love working out at the Wellness Center, but stupid Covid ruined that. read more

The men and women who check you in and or take your Chief complaint are the worst people on the planet. Not only do they not listen, they put down whatever they want to ,and they are Beyond rude. I like this hospital a lot! It's always clean and the staff are always professional and courteous. This is actually a pretty hospital as far as the interior. Lots of art and architecturally a well laid out hospital. The food is pretty sub par once you get into a room. Very bland and tasteless. I found out the food is much better in the cafeteria that the regular people eat. Some of the nurses are super kind and helpful and some seem like they don't like people or helping people. Thankfully most I encountered loved being nurses. The doctors I loved. All of them I found very funny and they explained things well. Getting out of this hospital is a bit of a nightmare and takes longer than to get in. Lol I also found out some of the pain pills do get rid of bad pain but render you pretty close to useless and unable to do anything but sleep. Lol read more

I was a victim of a hate crime, and Trinity was LAZY and APATHETIC after I was literally shot with a BB gun in the middle of the night, which caused me to bleed profusely and leak fluid because I have severe lymphedema caused my multiple sclerosis. I am a full time wheelchair user and was out in my wheelchair when I was shot, and I've nearly lost limbs in the past from going septic within 24-48 hours of first signs of infection. I told this to everyone I met as soon as the ambulance brought me here. They got the pellets out, caused me severe pain by taking their sweet time doing X-rays while I sobbed on the metal table trapped on my back, and then when they "cleaned" and "dressed" my wounds (after I practically begged them to admit me for 24-48 hours to watch for infection due to the risk and the unknown origins of the projectiles that had lodged themselves into my flesh) they dabbed at them with saline, and stuck the smallest bit of surgical tape to hold it on. All 4 of the bullet wounds' dressings came off in under 15 minutes, and yet the bandage for my IV was is still there. I have been waiting for over an hour to speak to a social worker about a way home as I had to leave my power chair behind because there is no where for it on an ambulance, we don't drive, and I cannot walk to get to a bus stop even on my best day. I had my father a 94 yo with an abdominal aortic aneurysm in on Friday, complaining of abdominal pain! clearly dehydrated, no IV, only a port, never given a blanket, never offered water, saw the RN, once in 6 hours! a CT was done, when ask for results, 3 hours later I was told yes it's growing, I don't know the size I will get back to you, never did! I have worked in the medical field for 40 years, this experience was mistreatment to our elderly no question! when port for IV was removed, pressure was not applied and blood gushing everywhere! I WILL NEVER BE BACK TO THIS ER AND WILL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW OF OUR EXPERIENCE! VERY SAD BUT TRUE read more

STAY AWAY There is a prayer room available, so that you can go in there and pray to God that these people don't kill your family members. The fifth floor merely goes through the motions when caring for your loved one, zero wound care leading to a need for pain medication that began my mothers spiral. When I finally got her home, and Ascension-based home care company came in and did what this horrible hospital never did. She felt terrific for four days before she passed. Before she got to this hospital, she was doing great. I wish someone would take a wrecking ball to this God-forsaken institution. read more

I just left St. Joes now Trinity Health yesterday. What a disgusting place. I go in for breathing problems and I'm hoping they do something special other than what I do at home on a daily basis. Wrong, I sit in the emergency room area, I saw 1 doctor when I was admitted. I then sit for over a day with little contact or treatment. The treatment they provide is the same treatment I do at home only worse. I requested to see the doctor in charge of overseeing me. He finally showed up and I told him I want to be discharged and I gave him all the reasons. He just shook his head and kept telling me why I shouldn't leave. I told him I want to leave and he said go ahead and leave, it will be against medical advice and if I was to go and try to get treatment somewhere else, I couldn't. Once I decided to leave you are treated like an outcast where you are completely ignored. Also, let me bring up the cleanliness of the place. There was a bathroom adjacent to my room that I had to use frequently. How disgusting it was, especially being in the EMERGENCY TREATMENT area! The restroom looked like it wasn't cleaned in several weeks, maybe months. The floors were filthy. Then I saw a cleaning person at the restroom and I thought, good it will be cleaned. He spent about 10 minutes and was done. I needed to use it so I walked across the hall and before I went in I asked if it was ok to use and the employee said yes, it's clean. I went in and the ONLY THING I could see any difference in was the toilet. The floors were the same disgusting dirty mess they were before. I thought the EMERGENCY TREATMENT area would be concerned about germs. OBVIOUSLY NOT! A little later I WALKED OUT! HORRIBLE. Wouldn't recommend I came in because I am 6 weeks pregnant and was diagnosed with HG BY THE SAME HOSPITAL. I have been throwing up for the past 5 days. And returned today because I was sent by urgent care the physician was terrible I was rushed to be taken care of no iv fluids were provided even with a note showing I'm dehydrated then on top of that I keep telling doctors I didn't want zofran because I was told it caused birth defects and the didn't care ! When I informed them of this they said there's nothing they can do since I didn't want the medicine. And that I should just drink tablespoons of water . read more

My niece has had terrible treatment. She has been admitted 3 times now since March 14, 2023. Doctors have been ignoring her issues with pain, telling her it's not that bad. She is dealing with an impacted bowels. Then sent her home and she is now back with extreme infection in her entire abdomen. read more

ER is terrible. No privacy! Patients lined up in hallways. My last trip, after 9 hrs in ER was told it would take up to 30 hrs to get a room. This trip (today) another 9 hrs so far in ER. Was admitted around 5 am. Its 9:15 and still sitting in the hallway with chest pains. read more

This hospital sucks. How y'all not feeding patients, take y'all hours to check on residents, they favorite line is I'm sorry. I witnessed myself the mistreatment of several patients. Karma is real and you workers who are mistreating patients y'all day is coming laying in that bed or nursing home getting abused. Too bad they dont let the nurses run this place...they are the only competent people here. I do not know where to begin...from the doctors giving me a med I told them multiple times I'm not in and it doesnt work...to not giving me a drug I'm supposed to be on...to not listening to a word I have to say...to rude doctors. I normally go to another hospital for the reason i came here for. So you would think I would get the same tx and diagnosis as I get the 3 times a year I end up with same thing flaring up. No .I get this doctor who totally ignores me and my history to not treat me with the only drug that works..massive doses of steroids....because he doesnt like steroids. Christ, does anyone? But if they are what works doesnt that mean I should get them? No...to him a water pill will work. Guess what? I get worse again as they take me off the steroids I had been getting in the er. When I complain to my head internal medicine doc that I refuse to agree or disagree with anything she asks as they just ignore me anyway she nods and walks off saying ok. It continues to get worse until I say I'm going to discharge myself ama since they are doing jack crud for me anyway. That finally gets some attention as 2 residents come and listen to all my complaints. They come back 30 minutes later with the same plan they had already but this ti.e adding a low dose oral steroid...which is like putting out a house fire with a squirt gun. Long story short I'm getting discharged tonight and since they did not do jack crap I have to go to the other hospital so I can get the treatment I need...3 days later and with very very negative experiences here. Dont think off sending your worst enemy here if you have an iota of compassion. This place should be closed due to incompetence. read more

Most nurses are nice, but they are short handed. Not because the beds are full but because they don't have the staff. Only one respiratory therapist for 3 floors per shift , so pray you are not suffocating at the same time as someone else. Covid treatment is sub par, and limited. Because of the short staffed nature and lack of communication, this hospital is not a safe place for someone that is in an acute care situation. The response time is too slow. You and your family member in my opinion from my experience, is not in safe hands if they require quick or any reaction time. Most nurses are great, doctors or horrible, and lack humanity and response. read more

The emergency room was filthy. Not all, but several of the personnel were cold and almost rude. Five hours before being admitted (not complaining about the wait time). Not once was there toilet paper in a bathroom or tissue in the room to use instead of toilet paper. The first person to do a blood draw on me literally opened the needle, laid it down, left and came back and could not find the open needle. Which was laying next to me on the bed. Luckily I wasn't moving around. I was there for a week. Not allowed to take a shower even though I was up and moving around. I went into the hospital with two prescriptions legally prescribed by my primary care physician and CD of a cat scan I had done earlier that day which brought me to the emergency room. When leaving a week later nobody could find my CD or prescriptions. not only could they not be found nobody cared. They said I could just go to Walgreens and get a refill. Which you would think medical professional know you can't do that with (that I brought with me) is insane to me. I was also told it was against hospital policy to take more the 5mg of Ambian per night. Which isn't enough for me to fall asleep. Which was a lie! Worst experience of my life. I could go on and on about this week. I knew I had to get out of there or my heart rate would never go down. Under no circumstances would I even consider returning to this hospital. read more

My father in law was taken by ambulance here last week. From the minute of arrival in ER to the care received in ICU and the Neurology unit was incredible. The staff was genuine and caring to both him and the family. The facility was first rate as was everyone we encountered there. This was not our first choice when he was taken here, but the choice of the ambulance much to our chagrin. We didn't have time to argue at that point as the urgency for care took priority. Let me say, that fate intervened and St Joseph Mercy Oakland ended up being the best choice despite our initial concerns. The "big hospital down the road" had seen the patient the day before in ER and because they were double stacked and quite busy that day dismissed him after one simple test and sent him back to the local rehabilitation facility he was at. That blown call by an overburdened ER doc caused him to live a full day in medical distress (aided by that big hospital down the road's rehab facility which also allowed it) The care received at St Joe's was top notch all around. Only wish he had been taken there the day prior instead of the other place. read more

My daughter gave birth at Saint Joseph Mercy Oakland 4 months early, due to an emergency. The care given by one particular nurse in the L&D (Maria) was excellent, but the doctors were unsensitive and unempathetic. my grandson was cared for by the head neonatologist (Pampati) also unempathetic, but passed away a few days later. The doctors Martin and Pampati never came to the room to speak with my daughter after the death of her child and the care there was below average. I do appreciate two special nurses in the NICU unit (Renee and Barbara) you guys were wonderful. The rest of the medical staff should find a new profession. read more

This is only an ER review. Some years ago I ended up in the ER and Dr. Weinstein was the attending physician. First of all, an EMT was in training and I was his practicing first IV insertion. Blood spurting up to the ceiling. Very painful. His uncontrollable shakes and sweating gave him away. Blood splatter all over the floor and no one cleaned the room. After insertion he slipped quietly out the door. I was very sick and near death. I had projectile clear vomiting that spewed off the end of the cart and way beyond on the floor toward the door. Clear vomit as I hadn't been able to hold down food for days. When a nurse finally came in, she yelled "She peed on the floor!" She went and got the Dr. and someone else. Not to clean it up by the way but to show I was (probably a Pontiac crackhead to them) who was useless and peed on their floor. I insisted (could hardly talk) it was VOMIT and I not only threw up but it projected. Very scary when that happens. How could my pee reach from the cart that I could not even move on all the way to the door? I would have to get up and walk over there to squat. Dr. shook his head and they never cleaned it up. Every time I said I threw up and needed help with severe nausea they said "It's pee, she peed on the floor." He did neurological testing on my toes and sent me for a brain MRI. He then called my Dr. immediately upon results. They left the room and subsequently my Dr. said the phone call was to tell him they expected me to die in that room! So they were not even checking in on me anymore. I had this awful feeling I was going to die and they were busy doing whatever until time to place a toe tag on me. I literally waited for a few hours to get strength to get up. Scared to die alone, I pulled that nasty IV out (seriously, how much more damage would that have caused anyway?) and managed to get out of that hospital and went to another. read more

I had my first child at St. Joe and will also be having my second there. I can really only speak for the Maternal Fetal Medicine (ultrasounds) department and the Labor/Delivery/Recovery (maternity ward) as that is where I have spent most of my visits. I find the staff there to be very knowledgeable, helpful, pleasant, and kind. I had a very good experience there for the birth of my first child and can also speak for the NICU, which is excellent. Some areas of the hospital are in need of some cosmetic updates, but the whole maternity ward has been completely renovated and is beautiful. I had a private recovery room and I hear that is almost always the case unless they are very busy in the maternity ward. read more

Emergency care is superb. Once you leave the trauma room and are placed in a "waiting for a bed area," its terrible. Six months ago we waited 9 1/2 hrs for a room, nurses wouldn't answer call prompt. They put us in Clinical Decision Unit. Outpatient which means you pay more cause Ins pays less. Today we've been here since 8:30. Trauma care outstanding, waiting time so far is 4 1/2 hours.This hospital is turning into another Pontiac General. Real shame. read more

This hospital blew me off the first time that I came in having complications with my autoimmune issues. I wasn't able to eat or drink and had lost 8lbs in a week. The doctor told me to see gastro and sent me on my way. 5 days later I went back because no gastro could see me for a while and i couldn't sustain myself with no food or drink until then. The next doctor finally put me on steroids and low and behold I improved. I got some fluids and finally was on the mend after almost 2 weeks of hell. The only reason they didn't get 1 star is because of doctor #2. Without him, they would deserve negative stars. So unprofessional and uncaring. On the way home from his total hip replacement, my boyfriend stated that this was his best hospital stay he's ever had. Being his third surgery this year and third hospital, it's saying something. Everyone was so attentive on the orthopedic floor. Hospital was clean and easy to navigate. Everyone was so friendly. I will recommend this hospital to anyone looking. read more

My wife had a full replacement knee surgery done (63 years of age) on Tuesday the 4th of January 2022. But by Wednesday the 12th, we thought we better head to St, Joseph in Pontiac to get a second opinion on her recovery. The security guy waiting at the ER entrance was amazing very informative. The guys that helped my wife from the car and into the building where excellent also. But (John Mina Ibrahim) and his team need more training. This guy and his team discharged my wife just as she arrived with a bloody infected bandage. (We were told after the surgery that the bandage was waterproof but that didn't pan out). John Mina Ibrahim and his team removed the bandage and checked for blood clots and put the same bloody bandage back on the wound and that was the end of there examination. We returned to our Orthopedic surgeon on Monday 1/18/22 for a full follow-up and were told that an infection had spread because of moisture and a damp bloody bandage. We thought we had visited a first class medical facility but now in hind site. it's easy to see that the Medical ER staff at St. Joseph Mercy has to be watched over like a 6 year old child. It's not like coverage was an issue we had a full coverage (Blue shield Blue Cross policy). So as of today 1/18/22 we've started 10-days of antibiotics to break the infection or in 6 to 7months the entire operation will have to be done over. This was such a disappointment. read more
