Parking is one of the main things that should be addressed for a large volume center. Whether you are part of the large workforce in the many hospitals or a patient visiting the clinic or ER, parking should be easy. Some of garages are designed badly (two way traffic in narrow lanes and lots of blind spots). It can routinely take more than 10 minutes just to park in a garage, on top of travel time in Houston. As part of the business, parking seems to be a large source of income. I have gone to several locations in TMC, and the cost of parking is $$. Some garages charge $5-10 for the first hour, but I never have been in and out within an hour. Most garages are $10-20 for an average, single appointment. If you have lots of appointments, just parking alone gets expensive quickly. In addition, public transportation in Houston is not a good option. While the cost of a bus ride is much more affordable, the time you need to spend looking up routes and the time spent waiting and getting the bus can be easily 2-3 hours, if you aren't already inside the inner loop of Houston. Since TMC is a large campus, you would think that there might a regular bus loop for the different parking garages and hospitals and other buildings. However, since there are several different, large healthcare groups, each of the groups only provides transportation services to their own group of buildings. Privileges for a student or staff for UT Houston and Baylor College of Medicine are completely separate.

First off, I went to MD Anderson with a recent cancer diagnosis. They were supposed to be my…read moreprimary doctors that would work hand in hand with my local cancer center. However they assigned me a team of oncologists who were NOT licensed for treatment of a patient from the state of Arkansas. They all thought that AR was Arizona and not Arkansas. I had already performed all the tests at my local oncologist like an MRI, PET scans, urinalysis, bone marrow biopsy, etc.... But they told me that it was their policy that I "had to" go through all of the same procedures in case they found anything wrong. I was 5 weeks into learning that I had blood cancer and had never been in a hospital before this experience. So they practically forced me to do everything again at a cost of over $3,000 after the insurance process. They then scheduled my follow up appointments with the doctor so we could determine my schedule for treatment. This was all scheduled in their app and was to be the first of many phone/video calls with my primary oncologist. The day came for my appointment and the doctor was 3 hours late to call me. My son had a basketball game that evening so we decided to drive there and hopefully the doctor would call me while we were on the road. He did call and asked me what I was doing so I told him I was driving to Tulsa OK for my son's game. He said that was way too far away from Arizona for a high school basketball game. I said it was just a 1.5 hours late trip from my house. He then said, no, you live in Arizona, you know ... AR. I said that I could be wrong but my 3rd grade American geography teacher told me AR was Arkansas. He said hold on.... Took 30 seconds to move around some paper on his desk, placed me on hold for another minute. Then he said that he didn't have a license to practice in Arkansas and he would have to cut the call short. I told him that my address never changed from the driver's license I gave them during the registration process and has always shown Arkansas. He laughed it off and said that he's not from America and he didn't take the same American geography class, but I should find another doctor as my primary oncologist because he would no longer be able to or willing to treat me. He then said that I should go to UAMS if I live in Arkansas... they have a cancer center up there. Fast-forward 3 months.... I disputed the bills with MD Anderson to no avail and they said it's not their problem to verify any information where a patient is coming from or who treats them. It's the patient's responsibility to know that from the beginning. It's ridiculous that their staff would expect a patient that is newly diagnosed with cancer to know that they would have to pull the licenses of every doctor that they are about to meet and work with to make sure that their license to be treating a patient from the state that they reside in. I also asked them where was the documentation that stated I needed to do this because they had plenty of documentation in the registration process that verified a whole lot of other items but nothing on being assigned a doctor that was licensed to treat the patient. Bottom line.... If you have a choice, please go to ANY other hospital and/or cancer center than this joke of a place. I'm my experience they only care about the money and immediately kicked me to the curb when they found out that I was not a steady paycheck for them and their industry. Just so you know, I never heard from the doctor again never got a card from them that said sorry we can't serve you or your needs. Just a bunch of bills that now I have to pay twice for because I had to do tests at the UAMS Center because they wouldn't even work with me to get all of my records in a timely manner. Yet they want to bill me for all of these tests that they didn't even use to help me fight my cancer. Again, all they're interested in is money and not the patient. I am now being treated at UAMS Little Rock and have had the most amazing experience that a person could have consider considering it's dealing with cancer treatment . The staff, the nurses the security the doctors are all amazing and I would never choose a different hospital. Please please please stay clear of MD Anderson, and go anywhere else.

This is a state-of-the-art facility rated number one in Texas. Yes, it's huge, and yes, the…read moremedical center is very crowded and parking can be difficult. But when people really need the best care, they come to Houston from everywhere in the world. I was diagnosed with lung cancer and had a robotic assisted surgery which took half of my left lung and I was alert conscious and feeling good just a few hours after the 5-hour procedure. because Dr. Kim used robots so the incisions were small, and my recovery was quick. I was sent home the next day. One day stay for major surgery! The timeliness of care was excellent. it was 2 weeks from referral to meet with the surgeon and two additional weeks to schedule the procedure, so I was essentially cured of my cancer within one month. this compares very favorably to the other cancer hospital next foor, which has a waiting list. to summarize, I had a great surgeon, a state-of-the-art operating room, competent nurses and everyone had a good attitude. really couldn't be better.

But once I delivered I was moved to a recovery room in the jones building. The room was much nicer, but small. The limit is four guest but to be honest that's too much. I also love the celebration menu for the new parents. Steak, lobster Mac and cheese, spinach and key lime cheese cake. A very good reward after not being on a clear liquid diet for two days.

Recovering from a procedure of that magnitude requires attentive monitoring and compassionate care. Unfortunately, that was not my experience. I was shuffled around for a room and then placed in a very small room and often felt largely left on my own during my stay. The staff was poorly equipped to handle my recovery. The lack of knowledge was infuriating. They would crush time released medications and I was told if I didn't take it then I would have to stay in pain. (My mouth was wired shut and it was like battery acid with the syringe. They didn't care.) There were long periods where I struggled to get assistance, and the level of attentiveness from staff did not reflect the seriousness of my condition. I would consider the care here unethical and inhumane. I also observed that my room was not cleaned consistently during my stay, which is alarming for a surgical patient where infection prevention should be a priority. What troubled me most was the lack of compassion and responsiveness from most members of the staff. After undergoing such a major operation, patients should feel supported and cared for. Instead, I frequently felt like an inconvenience rather than someone recovering from extensive surgery. Hospitals should be places where patients feel safe and supported during their stay. I hope the administration takes feedback like this seriously and works to improve the quality of care provided to not only surgical patients but all patients. You can tell who's there for just a paycheck.

Doctor Mathis has replaced the same knee on…read moretwo separate occasions, and unfortunately six months ago I began to have swelling and sporadic pain that increased to the point I needed to seek treatment. I have nothing but great things to say about Dr Mathis he and his staff are excellent and have treated me respectfully since I began seeing him in 2003 for my first knee replacement. I recommend him for knees, shoulders, and hip replacements. I first met Dr Mathis when we both were working at the VA Medical Center in Houston Texas over 30 years ago. He was then the chief of orthopedic surgery. The first time I saw him after he left, we both looked at each other with a sense that we somehow knew each other and we talked about the VA and that was our common connection. Dr Mathis shared with me that he loved taking care of veterans and like most orthopedic surgeons when it comes to knee replacements required morbidly obese patient to lose some weight prior to surgery. He shared a veteran story with me that changed the way he looked at the process. He told me he had a veteran who was a prisoner of war (POW) who had normally weighed over 200 pounds but when he was released from captivity weighed less than 100 pounds. The veteran went on to explain that he was not going to deny himself food after that life-changing experience. Their conversation showed me that he had the capacity to connect with his patience and me being a veteran and I see how it translates and reveals itself in the care that he and his team provide!

I did get a very rude person from benefits call me to let me know they couldn't contact my Insurance to get my estimate, Which was a first. Her name was Joanne, so watch out for her. I was there at 8 am and she could not get Blue Cross Blue Shield on the phone? All day!? I think she didn't call at all or was just impatient as she was on the phone with me. Of course my appointment got cancelled for the next day. I did talk to the Medical Director who was very nice, but I don't think she'll even be talked to. I'm thinking of finally moving on with my care to a different provider, Baylor has been getting worse through the years. So, good luck if you choose to go there.

Unfortunately, my insurance is on a grandfathered plan that does not cover preventive care without applying the deductible, which resulted in several unexpected bills, including a ~$400 facility charge from this center after applying my insurance! I contacted the billing department several times by phone and email to see whether there was any flexibility or assistance available. I communicated with Tannya and Rana, but I found the experience disappointing. The responses were curt and unhelpful, and the only solution offered was to "discuss it with your insurance" or enroll in a payment plan. There was no willingness to explore any other options or show empathy for the situation. What I find particularly frustrating is that healthcare providers often negotiate rates and adjustments with insurance companies, yet when patients are left with substantial out-of-pocket costs, there seems to be little willingness to work directly with them. A payment plan is not the same as addressing an unexpectedly high charge. If you have a choice of facilities, I recommend comparing their facility fees before scheduling a routine preventive procedure. Paying over $400 (after insurance!) in facility charges for a simple preventive screening was an unpleasant surprise, and the lack of meaningful customer service made the experience even more disappointing.T

I came out of MD Anderson after cancer and hernia surgery. My friend had stayed at Garden Terrace a…read morenumber of years ago and recommended them. Little did he know how far they'd fallen. They are awful and I have told my senior friends I would find a different facility for them as they need skilled nursing since a number of them have various stages of cancer, dementia and illnesses themselves. Not everything was bad; physical and occupational therapy were stellar. The visiting doctors were great. But the CNAs and some of the nurses are way, way below par. I also had food allergies that were completely ignored making me violently ill. Once the dietitian came in about a week or so after I'd arrived, it occasionally got better, but items that I was allergic to kept being offered to me. I finally had to start ordering meals from outside since they apparently couldn't accommodate me. I also fell the 2nd or 3rd day after I arrived and, since my CNA had just gone on her dinner break and NOBODY answered my call button from either my bed or bathroom, I had an hour to kill on the bathroom floor and eventually, the toilet seat when I was able to get off the floor itself. When the CNA came back from her dinner break, she came in to check on me and found me in the bathroom with both call buttons engaged. When I asked why nobody answered the call buttons, a nurse said she wasn't a CNA, she was nurse and those were not her duties. Lastly, I had a CNA assigned to my unit who boasted about finding places to hide during her shift so she wouldn't have to walk and do her job. She even repeatedly sent me in to take showers alone and would show up by the time I was drying off. Not sure, but I think this is a major violation in their care criteria. If you love your friends or family members, do not send them here. You'll regret it.
