This Belgian pub & restaurant doesn't just serve Belgian food - it also has a European feel, with old prints & photos on the walls & lots of wood panelling. Even the heating is in the form of an old style metal coil radiator (well, maybe it was for show since I was there in summer). They get 3.5 stars. Had German stewed pork shoulder with stoemp (mashed potato with butternut squash & cabbage). The meat was good. The stoemp was nice but lukewarm (it'd be nicer if it were warmer). The dressing for the salad was very interesting but was unfortunately unnamed on the menu. Also got Blue Wellington mussels. They tasted good, with quite a bit of beer (it's a beer place after all) but were rather small & were a bit sandy. On the up side they were all fully open (when I order mussels a few will not be fully open or not open at all). The fries were good - the ketchup was slightly spiced & fruity (similar to Belgian curry ketchup). The mayo was good too. Also got a walnut apple strudel with lemon creme fraiche. It tasted OK. It was served a little bit too hot. It was pretty flaky. The creme fraiche was very light - more like lightly lemon-flavoured fresh whipped cream. The only parking option nearby seems to be street parking, which is annoying - while only $1.25 per hour, they tell you you get 10 mins' grace but really the expiry time is just announced 10 mins early. So if you pay for 1 hour of parking you get 50 minutes (plus 10 minutes "grace"). Grr. read more

Quite the charming bar - I love the decor, feeling like I was in a decades old European restaurant.. Full disclosure, we only drank beer here and did not sample any of their menu. We had reservations down the street and didn't want to spoil our dinner. That being said, this place is awesome if you want to try unique, imported beers. The list is endless and overwhelming, and the server was fairly new and couldn't offer much help. We simply selected blindly with menu descriptions, and none were terrible. Don't see many places like this with such huge unique selections. Great vibe to along with it, making it a great spot to sip the day away. read more

First time to this restaurant. Thank you YELP for the help in finding great restaurants and food! Had the mushroom soup, exquisite taste.!! Loved the taste and the fresh herbs in the soup. Second had the puff pastry, salmon Wellington. Perfect crust, crispy and golden brown. The salad that came with the salmon was perfectly crisp in taste also came with a big scoop of mash potato. The building is an older building. The servers where really helpful and good. Would We return ? YES!! The dessert was Banoffee Pie. Rich, delicious great with their blk coffee. Yuminess in totality. After going here on a recommendation for dinner the 4 of us were left very disappointed. Started with tasty mussels as an appetizer. Two of us had the Schnitzel dinner that was a deep fried layer of flavorless meat. The other two of us had the meatballs served with Stoemp ( mashed pototoes) that were both very bland and tasteless. The decour looks very old and tired. We turned down the "patio" since it was next to a parking lot in back with the huge air conditioner chugging away on crappy wooden benches and chose to go back inside. Peterborough has lots of great places to eat.. this isn't one of them. read more

The Beer Menu here at St Veronus Cafe & Tap Bar might not be as huge as the one I found in Brussels. But for a business in Peterborough, I am really impressed. What should I drink?! Love the detail profile of each beers and it is easier to narrow it down to something that I would enjoy. And of course the friendly staff here really know their beers. Cochonnette ($8.85) and Vedett Extra White ($7.95) were both enjoyable. I just wish I can drink a few more but as usual with the high ABV% of Belgium beer, I have to take it easy. Belgian Frites ($8.00) though cannot compare to what I had in Belgium, so the search for the best frites is still on. The frites here itself is nice and crispy, great to munch on while drinking beer. Tried a popular pub in Peterborough called St. Veronus, a Belgian themed restaurant specializing in Belgian food and beer. The menu is very limited but offers an excellent selection of mussels and beers. They also have a small selection appetizers, mains and sandwiches. Overall the food, service and atmosphere were excellent. I tried the burger and it too was very good, fries were great. Only negative was a lack of traditional condiments for the burger and fries. Essentially they refused to give me ketchup and mustard which I didn't appreciate. They serve the fries with a mayo based dip, which was good, and a weird curry ketchup which was not so good. But to be fair this is not a burger place, it's a Belgian pub. So if you're into Belgian cuisine you'll enjoy the experience. read more

We went online to find a good place to eat while in Peterborough on business. Saying this place is good is an absolute disservice. The meal I posted is one of the best meals I have eaten in my life. I visited St Veronus when we stopped in for lunch before a meeting. The atmosphere was quite nice. Beligan pub with open windows and fresh air coming in. It was a bit windy but refreshing nonetheless after a long winter. After coming here I've decided I am the worst Belgian ever because I actually really hate mayo. A lot of the dishes are served up with mayo on it so I was pretty picky. I decided to get the King Baudouin Soup. "A savoury combination of tiger shrimp, scallops, clams and potatoes in a nutmeg cream broth." Oh my, it was quite good. I loved the fresh bread on the side as well. You only get one shrimp and one scallop but the clams and potatoes were plentiful. I got a chance to try the fries and they are delightful. Try them with the Belgian style ketchup, you will not be disappointed! If I was going to go for a larger meal I would definitely try those mussels. They have so many varieties. Great spot! read more

St. Veronus is one of our favourite restaurants and our first choice for lunch. It is one of our top recommendations for visitors from out of town. Chef Sue has an impeccable palate and inventive soup, salad, seafood and sandwich offerings. St. V has the best selection of Belgian taps you're likely to find outside of Belgium. We highly recommend the daily specials. Other excellent choices are the house made stew, the huge selection of steamed mussel dishes, the St. V. club sandwich, and the fresh shucked oysters on Thursdays from 5pm until they run out. The staff is bar-none. Many have been there since the restaurant's opening in 2003 which is a testament to excellent management and ownership. It is a place that a stranger can walk into and feel comfortable alongside the regular daily/weekly patrons. All are welcomed! The atmosphere is casual bistro in the best sense of the word. We have it from the source that at least one couple moved into the city from out in the county simply to be closer to their beloved Veronus. Could there be a greater stamp of approval? The prices are quite reasonable for high quality meals, often sourcing seasonal or local ingredients. And they have terrific coffee! read more

Always a great stop on Tuesday's. The half price Moules Frites are an amazing deal at $8 a pot. Our favourite are the Wellington Blue. The beer list is as long as my arm and the staff are excellent at explaining what is what. The sampler is a good way to get around the menu. Probably the best steak sandwich I've ever had. The sirloin was tender and moist, the sourdough crispy and fluffy, and gouda was incredible. Topped with bacon, sauteed peppers and caraméliséd onions, the overall flavour was skilfully influenced from the beer that the beef had been braised in. The sandwich was copious but not overly so. It was served with a mixed green salad (neat choice of dressings, lemon buttermilk was mine) topped with carrots + beets, and another side called stoemp which is a root vegetable mash (there were def potatoes, likely carrots, maybe yams... leeks? Probably garlic...) with herbs and whole mustard seeds. The seeds provided a really interesting texture contrast the the rich, velvety mash. It was like the occasional "pop" under your teeth. The service was very attentive, the decor was all wood and glass, like in a very old bistro and the coffee was rather decent. read more

It was our first time in Peterborough and so I looked on yelp and trip advisor to see what was good. Clams sounded good to us so we decided to go to St. Veronus. When we got there around 7pm, the place was already full so we decided to walk around and see is anything else piqued our interest. Nothing did so we went back and for a seat at the bar and just decided to eat there which I do recommend as it was interesting watching the bar tenders make drinks. My fiance ordered the daily special pei clams which came out in a big pot and was very good. The sauce was very unique and fragrant. It also came with a side of fries and some bread. I ordered the battered fried cod and it was very will done as well. The fish was interesting as it had some kind of spice added to it that is never had before in a fish and chips kind of dish. It came with a huge serving of salad as well. The portions are big, the price is right and the atmosphere was nice. Not too loud so we could chat. I would come hate again! read more

Absolutely the best. Came by for lunch on our way to Algonquin. Delicious mussels Bengal. The BEST sour dough bread and frites accompanying the mussels. I asked if I could purchase a loaf of the sour dough but it's just for restaurant customers only. That bread is worth a trip by itself! Had a club sandwich on toasted sour dough. Beautiful shreds of in house roasted turkey on the club. My biggest regret not being able to sample the beer menu as I was driving. read more

Tuesdays are half priced mussels and they are super delicious and totally worth it! I believe It comes down to $8 for a pound of mussels PLUS fries and bread. You know how normally mussels are appetizers? Well here the portion is big enough for a meal and I didn't even manage to finish the fries! We got the Bengal (which is an indian coconut curry flavour) and the Wellington Blue (garlic and cream with blue cheese and bacon) and both were amazing! Food is very good as far as Pub fare goes its probably 4 out of 5. As for their beer selection they rate a 6 out of 5..yes I said it. You will not find a bigger selection of beer anywhere in Ontario. Ask to see their Reserved list that only the "in the know" crowd even knows about. Nice vibe overal. The staff, well though they may have a couple of newer university servers, but the actual bar tenders are as knowledgeable as they come. SERIOUSLY I make the drive from Toronto to go to this place just to talk to someone who knows what they are talking about. I swear the bar staff have tried it all and know what they are exactly what they sell. You tell them what you think you like and they will blow you away with a choice brew or three. Wow,​ where do I start with this review?​ The food was sublime, there were a variety of options and the prices were more than reasonable, however, the server (elderly lady) left a lasting impression to make me never want to visit this establishment again! She was very rude. She rushed my order and rushed to clear the table before I was finished eating and then made a snide remark after she made me wait 25 minutes to pay the check saying she didnt see my credit card. Please note there were only four tables so the excuse that she may have been busy is not vaid. Why give 5 starts then? I live in New York City and have family operating multiple restaurants so I know the impact a negative review can have on a restaurant. The food was amazing and according to other reviewers so is the wide variety of beers. I'd rather leave a positive review and highlight the sub par service and offer my compliments to the chef :) I mentioned my experience to my friend who lives in Peterborough and before even describing the waitress he knew who I was talking about. EASILY. And I mean easily, the best bar tap bar I have been to. A few years ago in the summer this was the only place I went for food and drink. It has an excellent reputation amongst the many different restaurants in Peterborough and it deserves every bit of respect it has earned. The food tastes great, is unique compared to most pub fare and still gives that feel good, warming feeling that pub food should. Some of my favourites are the cheese board (which changes its selection weekly, I believe, from a local cheese store), the mussels of the day, and their sandwiches are fantastic! This brings me to the beer... I wish I had enough space to write a proper review about the beer and the selection offered but unfortunately you probably don't want to read a novel. The beers offered are potent, unique, tasty, pricey (hard to put a price on quality however, as this is top of the line stuff). Some of my favourites are Orval, Kasteel Donker, and Delirium Tremens. Lastly, I review the servers for you (because ultimately these are the people who keep me coming back). Each and every one of the servers at St. Veronus is personable, helpful and good at their jobs. Rarely have I had to wait a long time for food even on the busiest night. Also, no matter how busy they are they always have time to talk with you. It doesn't matter whether it's just normal conversation or something that has substance they are there to listen. I'm a permanent return customer, and it will always be considered first when I'm asking where I want to go to eat or to have a sip! read more

Went here my second night in Peterborough. They have an extensive beer selection, although most of it is bottled. They also have entree and sandwiches on their menu. Vegetarian options are also available. It's located right downtown in a wood panelled building, which adds ambiance as well. I'll definitely be going back. read more
