I have a little bit of a history with this store. I used to shop there in the 70s when it was a clothing store. Then in 2010 I worked there for one afternoon for four hours as the driver's helper. The store was a disorganized mess, the driver was stealing the donations and the mgr was a jerk. I tracked down the owner and advised him what was going on. Next time I went in the mgr. was replaced by a real friendly guy with a kind of cowboy personna. A few years later he was gone and the current staff was there. I live nearby nowadays and used to go in there about daily but I don't go there anymore because of something very unprofessional that happened with the staff earlier this year exposing a total lack of integrity of these persons. One day the store had their regular half-off everything sale. I was waiting for this day because I had my eye on a small Couroc tray on a nik-nak shelf had been there about a week. I only buy Couroc if it's cheap and wasn't paying full price which I think was $10 or $12. The store opened and I got in there and went straight for the small tray. A few minutes later the lady mgr. Cindy brought out 2 more Couroc pieces, priced them and put them on a table in front of me and I snatched them up for about $6 each. This lady didn't hype up the pieces or over price stuff. But the guy named Wally that works there that prices stuff thinks Couroc is gold and prices stuff really high, like in the $30 and $50 range. So this day, I had these 3 Couroc pieces and was in line to check out when another customer approached me and asked where I got the Couroc from and I told him. Right then Wally walked up and the guy started in on him that Wally was supposed to be saving Couroc for him. Wally said he had them in the back but somebody else put them out (Cindy. mgr.) and the guy started an argument with him and Wally repeated himself several more times "Somebody else put them out!" The guy was really upset and was giving me dagger looks. Obviously, this guy had a thing going where he was getting favors from Wally holding stuff for him and then he came in on half price day to make his buys. The guy gave me a real dirty look and, not wanting to be involved, I just turned away from him. The next day I asked Cindy what the store policy was on saving items for other customers and she denied anybody was doing that. Wally was acting real friendly with everyone else but seemed angry towards me so I attempted to reassure him that I hadn't complained about him and he started yelling that he didn't save anything for the guy and the guy was asking about something that was on the wall behind the counter. This was a complete lie and as I tried to correct him he repeated it all in a loud argumemtitive voice that everybody in the store heard. Upon hearing Wally's yelling at me, Cindy came out from behind the curtain and inserted herself into the conversation and told me off that nobody is saving anything for anybody and that she's busy, short handed and overworked. Both Wally and Cindy have mouthed off like this before. It's an out of place, uncalled for, weird response they use sometimes like when I've asked why certain items aren't for sale anymore like picture frames for example. I used to shop for them but they kept moving them. I got frustrated because they were always in a disorganized mess and I would straighten up after they moved them. This happened like four times and then one day they just put them all in the trailer in the back. When I asked Cindy about when they would be selling them again she said they were to busy and short handed to do it. A few weeks later I asked again and was chastised with her "too overworked and short handed" gripe but she says it like I offended her. Another time Wally said the same once when I suggested something about the plug-in testing area and again when I asked if a TV I was looking at had been tested. The dvd section was always a real mess. The holders were fowards, backwards, upright and sideways. I suggested they stack them sideways instead of vertical and gotthe same "too busy and over worked" push back so I just did it myself. and it's remained that way ever since. There's more stories like these and after so many I just stopped talking to them when I was there and never asked a question about anything anymore. I regularly spent $100 to $200 a month in there but since the that last Couroc episode about 8 months ago, I don't go there anymore because of their self indulging, indignant, disrespectful attitudes and the lying about what they've said. I still shop at the produce market next door every day and often pass Wally standing out front on the sidewalk smoking his nasty cigarettes. He recognizes me and just looks away. After all the years I've shopped in that store, this is what it's come to there. After reading so many similar, recent, negative comments here, I think the owner should replace both Cindy and Wally because, for sure, there's a lot read more

I'd like to start by saying.. I've found a whole new shopping experience and it's not Macy's or Nordstrom's.. or Marshall's.. As we mature we absolutely need NOTHING...and recycling is our one answer to finding that cool treasure and super cool prices.. Of all the thrift shops I've been to and trust me I consider myself a pretty savvy thrift shop pro.. This thrift shop not only is the best we have in our area but the staff is absolutely incredible!! pros: -cool stuff cons: -super rude cashier by the name of carolyn -items are priced way too high, and sometimes will be changed at the register for 0 reasoning, other than that's what she decides -carolyn will see you but only a couple items and if you pay card it seems she wants to charge more bc "they have rent to pay" i love the donations they get in, but everything else makes me never want to come in. please get some nicer ladies to work as cashier and price your donated items cheaper so they're more affordable to people who are going in there to buy cheaply used items. there's things i've seen that wouldn't even be that expensive if they were brand new. no wonder they have trouble paying rent, no one wants to buy overpriced stuff read more

On Tuesday, I was in Vincent de Paul and there was a lady there with a dog, and she was asked that she not bring the dog in because it was not a service dog, and the lady threw a fit very uncalled for the lady behind the desk was very polite And also went and got the manager to let her know that the dog was not allowed in that thrift store so the customer threw a little fit and was hollering that it was prejudice about her dog and the lady assured her it had nothing to do with her nationality just please do not bring the dog in and I just had to share my thoughts Because the people that work inside Vincent de Paul are wonderful and they're not there to hurt anybody. They want to sell their items so shame on that customer that was in there with that and thank you for people that worked there. read more

My dentist office was closed near this thrift store so I took a walk over to check it out. WOW! what a beautiful surprise I had. The store had been completely remodeled since the last time I had been there. I was so impressed with the look and OMG the merchandise was beautiful and priced reasonably. I cannot wait to go back and look for more beautiful items to buy. I will shop here before shopping online to save on shipping charges and know that the clothing I buy really fits. i was looking for furniture for my new apartment and happened to stop at st vincent de pauls in seaside ca. and talked to cindy she told me to bring my voucher and my lease and they would help me with furniture, dishes towels, pots and pans, etc, i did and was treated so awesome from the staff. they helped me with alot of stuff for my apartment free of charge. they also helped take the stuff out to the truck to load up. if you need anything for yourself or anyone else this is the place to go. ty so much to the staff for all their help and wonderful service and very nice merchandise. go check the place out. read more

I have shopped at SVDP every week for decades and also donated to them. Unfortunately, I can no longer shop at SVDP ever since they put Carolyn at the register. While Cindy and Wally are both professional and courteous, this woman Carolyn is awful. They should stick her in back or get rid of her altogether because she is rude and petty with customers and has no business working with the public. One time I went in during the height of the pandemic before vaccines were available. I went in wearing a mask, knowing they had a masking policy. She had her mask hanging off her chin with both her mouth and nose uncovered the whole time I was shopping, yet she would hypocritically yell at unmasked customers to mask up or leave the store. I later went to pay for an item that had two price tags on it. One was on a printed sticker, and the other was scrawled in pen. I assumed the sticker was the correct price, but she charged me the higher, scrawled price which was a few dollars higher. When I asked her about it, rather than explaining what the two price tags were all about, she raised her voice at me and said "This is the price, you want it or not". I left it and walked out. I stayed away for six months, swearing to never go back. I decided to finally give them another chance and went back one day. This time I observed her being rude to a Spanish-speaking couple who thought everything was half price but really only clothing was half price. She took on a condescending, sarcastic tone saying "no, everything was not half-price", as if they were stupid for thinking such a thing. Then while I was shopping she insisted on taking the items that I was looking away from me at to hold behind the register, even while I was still considering them. It was as if she thought I was going to steal something. She wasn't doing this to other customers. I should have walked out then, but there were some things that I really wanted to purchase, so I put up with her unwarranted suspicion. Finally when I went to pay for my items, she claimed that a certain tank top I had could not have come out of the bargain drawer because it looked too nice. It had come out of that drawer, but because there were no price tags on any of those "bargain" items, there was no way to prove it. This was not my fault, and I did not like that this woman was insinuating I'd done something wrong, coupled with the store's lack of price tagging put me on the defensive. She did finally begrudgingly give it to me for the correct price as if she was doing me some sort of a favor instead of simply conducting business appropriately. The final straw, however, was after I paid for everything which included some little packets of beads, I noticed she was scooping up a few of the same beads on the counter. I noticed they had fallen out the partially open Ziploc bags I had just purchased. I pointed that they belonged with my beads, had fallen out of my bag, and I showed her the opening in the bag. Instead of handing them over to me she flung them into the display case and closed it! Who even does that? I'm not sure what this woman's problem is. Maybe it was payback for the tank top argument? Who knows, but there is no need to be so nasty and the store would be better served by putting someone else at the register. Remember people, kindness, courtesy, and professionalism are free. I can't believe I donated to this place and spent money supporting them for decades to get treated like this. I don't leave negative reviews lightly and gave myself time to cool off and write this as objectively as possible yet I still felt like I had to share these negative experiences. read more

I love checking St Vincent de Paul for good finds. I usually go here for books, they've got the best prices on used books, and they are organized!! I check out the clothes and household items as well, but definitely spend a lot of time in the book section. Recently, I was on the hunt for a wedding dress. I had a wonderful experience at the Seaside store! Cindy is awesome, she cleans the donated dresses herself! She helped me look through the inventory, and even helped me to try on dresses. I left that day with *my* dress!! She and the other ladies helping me were so kind and sweet. If it were not for the half price days, they would only get one star. They are so rude, and it comes from the top. The lady running the show is the rudest of all. I asked her a simple question, not believing that they would want $24 for 8 small matching coffee mugs marked $3 each. She would not even look at me when she rudely stated that the price is what is marked, so whatever it is marked, then that is the price, then went about her business. Well lady, customers are the most important thing in your messy little shop. This attitude that you have better things to do then to answer my questions will not win you many return customers, and as I hope you can see, results in a fairly nasty review. I was also considering purchasing a couch. I had purchased furniture there before on their half price day and paid a little extra to have it delivered. So I asked if it would be possible to have it delivered again. She then proceeded to have a one-sided argument, rudely and emphatically stating that there will be no deliveries. It was one-sided, because all they had to do was politely state that fact instead waving her arms around and behaving like I had protested this policy. I just stood and stared, smiling at her as I would a child having a fit. So 2 stars for good deals on half price days, but don't ask for help from the lady running the show, unless you want to see an adult behave like a petulant child. read more

I've just moved to the area and finding quality thrift stores is my love in life. This place is not worth your time. The staff have a very snobbish attitude. I was almost bowled by a male staff member who obviously had something urgent to attend to, since he did not apologize for knocking me into a door frame. The prices are outrageous for a thrift store. I went in looking for some pictures to use the frames for an art project. The store actually think people are buying old pictures for the art! I did not find one picture/frame under $20, even a small 8x10. Multiple furniture items were upwards of $200-$300. The selection is varied and not great. Go to Goodwill instead. read more

I love this thrift store. They dont put anything out with holes or stains. If there is something out, it was by accident and they will either give you a discount or take it off the floor. The furniture is always low priced and they will move it for you for a small extra fee! I found a really adorable couch there for $50. It looked like it was brand new! The staff is amazing and the owners are total sweethearts. Also, anything they dont see fitting in the store (quality not up to par) they donate it to the homeless and other charity organizations. Today I went in to look at books. They moved the book section and now it's very difficult to see the selection. The current selection is probably the worse I've seen...it made me think they might be discontinuing them...so sad if that is the case! Prices here have risen in the past year. (as they have at all thrift shops) The best day to buy is the last Saturday of the month when everything is half off. There are daily specials also, but you never know what they're going to be. I have been shopping here for several months and even during the pandemic the staff has been nothing but kind and very precautious as you enter you must have your temperature taken and they do offer sanitizing stations throughout the store. A huge board hangs on the back wall visible as one enters the store; it lists all the 'rules'. Perhaps the shop has a problem with shoplifting of its donated goods, but the sign sets an adversarial tone from the beginning. I personally witnessed a very rude exchange between a clerk and a customer who needed two cents-yes, 2 cents-from the 'give a penny' dish to complete a transaction! With so many quality thrift and consignment stores in the Monterey area, it is easy to find one with a more inviting atmosphere and a larger selection of product. I'm on the fence about this thrift store.While I have found some good things here, mostly they're way over priced. The people who work there a pretty unfriendly, and can even be quite rude and strange. It bothers me that it appears that they will give special deals to some, (friends?) but not let others be a penny short for such things as a children's book or a homeless couple trying to buy a warm jacket that was a dollar more than they had. I shop there because I love the hunt for unique treasure and the possibility of a good deal, but it doesn't feel like I'm giving my money to good people. Saint Vincent's is an incredibly good resource for our community, and people in need, but maybe they should check in on their shops once in awhile and see the people who are representing for them. read more

Not only are there many hidden gems, antiques and collectables, to be found at St. Vincent de Paul. The most important gem is the charitable and amazing staff. I am a social worker and I had a person who was homeless and moved in to an apartment the first true housing in many years. This person had nothing for their home. The manager and staff filled the apartment, furniture, bedding, dishes the whole nine yards at absolutely no cost. The volunteers worked with the person making all the items were what they wanted. Then they drove everything to the apartment and carried it in!!! I could not believe it amazing charity. I have been in the St Vincent dePaul thrift store in Seaside and have donated items to this worthy cause. This is a very nice store run with a lot of love and care. Apparently some folks don't understand that the donated items (which is everything) are sold to support the local St Vincent dePaul volunteer help line. This help line gives out thousands of dollars each year to homeless and families that need a helping hand. Most of the staff at this store are volunteers. They price the items with the only goal of making sure money continues to go to the SVdP help line. Yes, there are rules posted in the store but that is there mostly to just keep the volunteers safe in a slightly rough neighborhood. So next time you are in Seaside looking for a bargain, just remember that you are shopping for not just yourself, but for others in need of a little bargain from life too! p.s.
