Witham and family. By 1917, the hospital had been built and stayed in the same location until 2003 when a brand new 128,000 square feet facility was constructed at a different location in Lebanon. While I've made many meaningful stops on my Tenderness Tour events, few have been as meaningful as my stop at Witham Memorial Hospital where, in fact, I was born in 1965. Witham was and is a county hospital. As evidence of my future attention-seeking behaviors, my birth made the local newspaper when my parents' car broke down on the way to Witham and they were assisted by a small town police officer nicknamed Barney Fife. Seriously. Having been born with spina bifida, 1965 Witham was ill-equipped for a child with my serious health issues and within hours I would be transferred to Marion County General (which became Wishard and now Eskenazi). However, as someone who has long outlived my life expectancy I've always been fully aware that it all began with the loving and quality care I received at birth even in a hospital not equipped to serve me. Present day Wishard has expanded beyond the hospital and offers services in Boone, Clinton, and Montgomery Counties of Indiana. While they certainly are still not as equipped some of Indy's more comprehensive medical centers, Witham has definitely grown and their new facility is quite beautiful. They offer emergency services, women's services, inpatient/outpatient, surgery, rehabilitation, and offer a wide variety of services including in many of the areas I continue to need including neurology, urology, ortho, wound care, and many others. Witham has a 95,000 square foot medical office building attached to the hospital. It's considered a short-term acute care hospital and has 96 beds. They have an area on their grounds for memorials - an option I seriously considered having had a daughter who passed away. Started, quite literally, with a $15,000 donation, Witham Memorial Hospital has grown into a remarkable facility yet continues to possess a sense of small town values and shows remarkable compassion. As I returned for a a visit and a symbol of their compassion and expertise, I fell in love with the place all over again.

I had an endoscopy and colonoscopy here in early December. It was my first time having either…read moreprocedure, as well as my first time ever being sedated (I'm in my 40s). To say that I was nervous was an understatement. When I checked in, they had a sign posted that several of the doctors were running about an hour behind, and then the person behind the desk made sure to tell me as well. Not exactly what someone who hasn't eaten in 24 hours wants to hear, but there's not really much you can do about it. When they called me back and took me into the pre-procedure area, I must admit that I started to panic. It was VERY crowded. Lots of beds sectioned off with curtains, nurses/anesthesiologists/doctors walking around, blood pressure monitors beeping, etc. If you're nervous about medical procedures, just steel yourself that it's going to seem chaotic, and you may be tempted to run out of there. The nurse who was working with me told me that it was a very time of year with everyone trying to get things done before the end of the year, so it may not always be like that. My nurse was very friendly and reassuring. I also had another nurse come by to put in my IV, the anesthesiologist stopped by to ask me a few questions and see if I had any concerns, and my doctor also came in to say hello. Before long, they were wheeling my bed into another section of the building and had me in my procedure room. There was music playing and the nurse made sure I was comfortable as we were waiting for the anesthesiologist. She came in, said she was starting the meds, and then I was out. Everything was uneventful, and a nurse from the office called me the next day to make sure I was feeling ok. I don't wish to have to use these services often, but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to others.

The experience was pretty awful! Due to the size of the mass that they had to remove, my incision was 7 inches long. The anesthesiologist didn't know what he was doing. I don't know where he was trained, but common sense says that you don't want a patient with a fresh incision down the abdomen to be nauseous and vomiting in recovery. I will never forget the torture of those 20 minutes of retching in the recovery room! I would retch, then scream, retch, then scream for 20 AGONIZING MINUTES! It felt like I was being ripped open inch by inch! His name isn't on any of the paperwork, which is rather suspicious... The nurses that took care of me for the next three days were AMAZING, though! They were wonderful and helped to make the whole wretched experience bearable!

The nurses- both day and Night Shift were friendly, engaging, helpful and knowledgeable. Same goes for the doctor we saw in triage before my doctor arrived. Add to that, the cleaning staff were also so personable and helpful. They give great tours in advance so you're comfortable for when you arrive for delivery. They answer all your questions, show you where you'll be and talk about what to expect. They also make notes of your birth plan or preferences so they know in advance. Also, this hospital has amazing food. Seriously. I ate every chance I got haha they told me each delivery would happen "within an hour" however we normally received it in 10 minutes or less. What a friendly, peaceful place to bring your new baby into the world.

He has shown wonderful bed side manner, care, concern and has offered effective rehabilitation for my lower back pain- I've suffered from for years. I opted for surgery to be performed at Community Surgery Center Hamilton. By Dr. Mazellan and staff. There I received amazing care from Trena, Jean and Karen. Karen went beyond and made me feel especially cared for. Even calling me to let me know I left some very special personal items behind that I quickly retrieved. To note, I was able to opt out of an IV and my holistic practices were well received and respected. I was able to refuse harmful drugs with lasting effects.. I would HIGHLY recommend them.

I really don't think I could have gotten this level of care at a civilian hospital, at least the ones I'm acquainted with. My first experience with Roudebush was many years ago visiting a friend, the entrance was on the south side and the atmosphere was dark and forbidding, it was depressing walking in the place. My thought at that time was "if this isn't a federal building I've never seen one". I think of that first visit every time I walk into the atrium and it's light, full of friendly staff whom have made veterans their priority, I'm impressed all over again. That experience has been consistent on every floor with all the staff I have encountered. The professional staff communicates a genuine interest in the patients not a business as usual attitude. I don't know if VA centers around the country are dispensing this level of care, but I'll be sticking with Roudebush.

The bathrooms in the emergency room are so outdated and dirty. I know there were some other people there probably in more critical condition than he was, but we waited for over two hours once we were taken back to a room before a nurse even stopped in to ask him what was going on. It's such a shame that with all these other hospitals getting fancy makeovers and having the latest technology for medical equipment that we can't have a hospital to provide better care for our veterans.

While IU Health is not my tier 1 provider with my insurance, it's in-network. When it came up that I would require another surgery to address an ongoing issue, I began exploring IU Health North in Carmel in the hope that I would find a smaller, more personal care setting without compromising the quality of care I need as a complex patient. I was told to arrive at 8am for a 10am surgery. Registration is on the first floor adjacent to the information booth. The surgery suite is on the second floor. From surgery, I would go to recovery (of course) and then be kept overnight. Parking is free at IU North (NOTE: While I realize it's a bit of a stereotype, I'm not quite sure why the wealthier Hamilton County hospital offers free parking and the downtown Indy hospital does not, but I digress). While this is a bigger hospital than you might expect, I still consider it one of IU's satellites along with Avon, Saxony, Morgan and others. I arrived on time. Registration was simple via kiosk or with a person. Generally, the person is there to ask questions and direct. Once registered, I was sent up to surgery and the hosting area was almost immediately off the elevators. I checked in, got my arm band, and waited for my turn. I was taken back a bit early by a friendly technician. They got me settled in. Then the nurse and, of course, visits from anesthesiology and the physician doing my surgery. I'd informed the team up front of some trauma care needs. I was pleasantly surprised that this information had been clearly communicated and addressed. This doesn't always occur so thoroughly. I was grateful. I was in surgery on time. The surgery went well and I recovered quickly enough that I'm not sure I was even offered water in recovery. They had me on the floor fairly quickly. I got one nurse who was finally able to help me address an allergy inaccuracy. I was on the fourth floor. Interestingly enough, I was on the maternity ward (post partum). Apparently, they use part of the area for overflow. I was only in overnight, however, I didn't have a negative issue with nursing or techs. All were caring, compassionate, and for the most part attentive (I wasn't a high need patient, so it's hard to gauge attentiveness). The food? Definitely average. I took photos for three out of the four meals. The cafeteria downstairs is definitely better. I'm sure it's the same team, but I'd take this over Methodist most days - they get it to you more quickly, it's warmer, and those taking the order are simply friendlier. I figured IU North would be a little more high tech: 1) It's in Carmel and 2) It's a newer hospital having been built in 2005 with a cancer center addition in 2020. Most of the staff didn't seem to know much about the hospital, a weird deficit in terms of building a culture. Easy questions - like capacity and number of beds - were met with blank stares. It took forever for someone to figure out that there's a phone charger actually on the beds (it worked perfectly with my iPhone 16). I'd brought a charging cord believing that would be true, but could never figure it out. Finally, someone did. I was discharged as expected the next day. Discharge was a bit weird as it wasn't done by my nurse for the day. Instead, there was a virtual nurse (an actual person presenting virtually). Quite honestly, I hated it. It was impersonal and they clearly hadn't read my situation (for example, making comments about walking to a footless wheelchair user). I was also surprised no staff escorted me out. Yes, I had a ride. It still felt weird. I got my meds for home from an in-house pharmacy (Noting that I'd told them to send it to my pharmacy). While it wasn't preferred, it was convenient and it was delivered to my room so I could pay. The atmosphere here is calmer, cleaner, and aesthetically more pleasing. It's MUCH quieter. Instead of room bells buzzing, they have a silent system that greatly reduces the noise. Yes, it's still a hospital and hard to sleep. However, it's much improved. I also found the beds vastly superior to Methodist. Overall, I'd call this a good but not great experience. There are still some bugs to work out. However, the care was great - the procedure I needed was actually only okayed for this location recently. I was very pleased with the trauma-informed care and greatly appreciated the quality care for a generally basic but very necessary inpatient surgery.

They are going away from OBGYN…read moreservices where you know who is delivering your baby to more of a hospitalist model, so the OBGYN practice that I went to moved to St. Vincent.. When you go for a procedure you register at kiosk and go to 2nd floor for surgery. The experience can be a mixed bag.... There seems to be a lot of over worked employees. There are also a lot of nice volunteers. Getting bloodwork done is efficient and I tend to get results back quickly. If you are inpatient and the nurses poke you without getting the correct vein ask for a phlebotomist.. there was a very nice guy who has a machine to help find your vein for the poke and it makes it quicker and less torture. Their cafeteria is not bad. I did enjoy the made to order omelet. Their mushrooms are real mushrooms and not the canned ones.
