I have come here a few times to just check it out, or if walking around sunset time and wanting to watch the sun set beyond the Olympic Mountains across the Puget Sound. There are a handful of parking spots and a small restroom building, neither of which I have used yet in my coming here. Oddly, this neighborhood park has been around for a number of years, but was one neither me nor my parents were too aware of despite living in the area for over 20 years. Nice to have a place like this to come to and clear one's head, watch the sunset or a train going past, just play around, or sit down and do some work or read at one of the tables.

It's tucked away in Richmond Beach on the waterfront, and even though I am in Richmond Beach a fair amount, including a bar not too far from here, I had no idea this existed. You can not access the water as train tracks and a fence keep you inside the park. It's a small place with little parking, but an actual bathroom on site, a playground, black berry picking and gorgeous views. It seems to be a nightly walking place for many residents in the neighborhood and a hang out spot for local teenagers. In the actual lot there are only 5 spots (1 handicap), but it appears people are able to park up on the hill above the park and walk in. The play ground looks like a nice reason to visit, but it currently has some yellow tape on it for covid. Dining seems to continue to bring in visitors as there are a few picnic tables and we witnessed multiple people stop by with take out. It's very nice to be able to watch the ferries go by, including some big ships and if you are lucky a train or two. I think this would be an enjoyable place for anyone who likes to gaze out over the water. I plan to go back some day when cruise ships return and see if I can catch one going by, in the mean time though its a great place to watch a sunset.

It is in a residential neighborhood, so it can also get quiet busy with kids at times. We would wait for quiet times when I was growing up and my parents would bring me and my sister here and to the adjacent Rest Lawn to learn to ride our bicycles. I preferred the paved surface of the roads on the Rest Lawn, but I learned to get started and stop on grass (at this park) as that is harder than starting on smooth surfaces. In the long term that worked out because learning to ride my bike on paved surfaces was a lot easier once I got going on grass. We'd make an effort to come during the day when most people were eating or at off hours on the weekends. Now the field in Hickman Park is turf. Be mindful what time of day you visit as the park draws different crowds at different days/times. The playground is temporarily closed due to COVID-19, but the rest of the park is open.

My favorite part of this park is the glacial erratic that's just to the side of the skate park. Though not as mighty as the Lake Stevens erratic, this one is pretty darn impressive. The large grassy field on 196th Street SW is prefect for if you want space to be active and run around or play a recreation field sport that doesn't take up too much space. There is parking on both 196th Street SW and the short Wilcox Park/Veterans Way Drive on the backside of the park. I enjoy the row of American flags flying high on the front side of the park. It is both patriotic and makes the park easy to identify from the road when driving past. Sanitation wasn't a problem when I visited and the park was well taken care of. There is also a restroom building with running water.

Additionally, there are two off leashed fenced arenas. One for big dogs and the other for little dogs. Pretty good boundaries for humans also. The park itself is well kept and maintained on a very good schedule. The people who go to the park are 85% really good folks. The other 15% of the people are rude and racist. Still, that doesn't change that the VENUE is a NICE ONE.

I arrived at Esperance Park this…read moreevening, Wednesday 21 June 2023, at about 7:50 p.m. I had not been to the park before, so I started walking the gravel path past the off-leash dog areas and a large grassy area. As the gravel path neared some tall trees I noticed a dirt path into the woods. Following the path into the woods I heard different birds calling. Then I spotted a neon green structure with steps and a ramp and I went closer to figure out what it was. It was a large zipline swing, the largest I have encountered in a park thus far. I tried it out and found I got traveling pretty quick. A fun treat tucked in the wooded area of the park. Parking was abundant and the driving entrance easy to find. Signs with the park name were located both at the driving entrance and on a fence on the opposite side of the park. In addition to the aforementioned features, there was a large playground, grass baseball field, and a basketball hoop area with a fence and smooth ground.

The dirt field was fun as it allowed us to adapt our soccer skills to different natural conditions (standing water on a dirt field, inches thick mud, loose dirt, and dirt hard as pavement because it froze in 20 degree Fahrenheit weather after a rain). The times the dirt froze helped up become more conscientious runners on the field, especially in regards to how we would run so our feet would not catch on the frozen dirt. Aside from the soccer field, there is grass area to warm up, walk around, or take a picnic. A trail system winds around the two ponds. On my visit today, Wednesday 26 July 2023, I saw geese, ducks, a great blue heron, a few small blue dragonflies, and gray squirrels. The restroom building had running water and soap. Parking was abundant as it was quiet, on days we had soccer games it could fill up quickly.

Our adventure finding new parks in the area to frequent continued this past Sunday despite cold and…read morerainy conditions. My children and I were not to be deterred! We drove over to Mill Creek and found Pine Valley Park, which was stunning immediately from the road. There was no parking lot but there was plenty of street parking, so we pulled right up and began our adventure. Right up front is a beautiful playground area, a very sturdy and well-constructed pavilion, and plenty of seating for anybody wishing to watch their children from a comfortable spot. Not too far away was a basketball court and a beautiful field in which to run and play. There was a beautifully paved trail that went all around the outside of the park. And despite the time of year-early March-it was clear that this part was well-manicured and taken care of on a regular basis. Mill Creek parks seem to have so much character to them, and this one was no different. It was exceptionally clean and exceptionally well-kept, with plenty of things for everyone in the family to do. Probably our favorite piece though was the beautiful collection of trees-particularly in the park's center. In fact, we walked over to the circle of trees in the very center of the park and ended up finding a Mill Creek rock! Those who live in the area and frequent Facebook know that these rocks are part of a very humorous and rewarding game that people play with each other in the community. When you find one of these rocks, you take your photo with it and then re-hide it for the next person to find. It's a blast! The bottom line about this park is, even though it's not huge in terms of size, it's huge in terms of spirit. It's beautiful, there's plenty to do, and the people in the area are incredibly friendly as well. Recommended.
