As usual, the service, I Stafford, Home service was great. The original schedule was for a fall furnace tuneup, but I asked if they could put it in a hall thermostat that I could control using my phone and the Internet. Seath was was able to accommodate my unplanned request and got me set up with the new thermostat. I am exceedingly pleased with the thermostat he recommended, and with his efficiency in getting it installed. Seath what is both very professional and personable, so the whole experience was great. Absolutely unacceptable. My wife and I bought a new house just under a year ago. We wanted to ensure our furnace was in good working order, and so six months ago (during the off-season) we called Stafford home service and they sent someone out to look at it. We were told our furnace was in fine working condition and there were no issues with it. This winter, we started to have water leakage from the humidifier attached to the furnace. I opened up the furnace humidifier to see what is attached in the picture. Under no circumstances is it possible that this occurred in six months. I have family friends who work in HVAC who state this type of appearance usually takes 5 years or more to occur. The filter disintegrated as I was trying to remove it. In addition, there was a very mild but real amount of rust which took me (a not very handy, handy man) a few minutes to take off - like it hadn't been opened in years. Thank you Stafford for charging us nearly 200 dollars so that my family could breathe air blowing through the pictured filter for the last 6 months. read more

TOTAL WASTE OF OUR MONEY!!! Paul Stafford Heating and Cooling accepted our job to install a boiler system. We have an older home that uses electric heat. We don't have a furnace. We already had a Space Pak High Velocity unit installed for air conditioning. To save on heating costs, we asked Stafford if they could install a heating core on the Space Pak system and a boiler to supply the heat. They said yes and accepted the job. To our surprise, they were not qualified to perform this work. The boiler (serviced as recommended) lasted a couple years and the piping was a total mess. They had to return to our house so many times, we lost count. To fix our heating debacle, we hired a qualified company located in St. Paul. They ripped out everything Stafford installed and replaced the boiler and piping. Our new system has been working great ever since. We were mis-lead to believe they know what they were doing! We have used this company for several years with respect to our in-home audio and video needs. Their techs have always been polite and efficient. However, we were surprised by our two most recent experiences. We were charged $199 for the tech's ten-minute service to connect our new DVD blu-ray player. We were also charged $444 for an employee to set up a new tv, which cost less than the set-up charge. It couldn't have involved more than one hour of his time. In short, we acknowledge their capabilities, but we consider their charges over the top. read more

After something like 4 estimates I finally got onto Angie's List and found Paul Stafford Inc as the highest rated. They really are awesome. They came at the middle price range from everyone else, but they were very courteous and friendly and showed up when they said they would and stuck to the price they quoted. They replaced our Fuse panel with a new breaker panel. Then a year later they rewired our entire 2nd floor and installed recessed lighting with dimmers. They really did a great job. My furnace stopped working the day of the 8 inch blizzard we just had. Dan was able to make it out to our place very quickly and diagnosed the problem to be a bad fan motor. He was able to locate the part, suggested that I check on the warranty for the furnace, and then worked with the supplier to make sure I got the credit for the part and didn't have to pay for it. Dan installed the new motor immediately and in spite of the terrible driving conditions that day we had heat back at our house. Dan was very knowledgeable and professional and exchanged many texts, calls, and emails during that short timeframe to keep me posted on the situation. I am giving Stafford the highest marks, but I want you to know EXACTLY why. Over and over I have hired companies in the service industry to repair things. Overall the appliance repair industry, I have found, is filled with incompetent individuals and/or that should "overall" be considered white collar criminals. I made the HUGE mistake of hiring someone without checking YELP and almost paid a huge consequences. I hired a different company to come out and service my AC unit that had stopped working. After sensing that I was being seriously being ripped off with getting a quote of about 900$ to repair my AC, I stopped that repair person, had him charge me for the service call, and sent him away I then, went into my house, did my research on the parts, etc. Then after reviewing YELP found DAN at Stafford. Here's what happened. As I am fairly good at common sense repair issues, I told Dan what I was told by the previous repair person and what I had learned on my own. Dan gave me his thoughts on what the issue likely was, and after 10 min. work, on my own, I had the AC unit running.. I hired Dan to come out and do an inspection of the unit to look at what I did, and to see what it really needed. In the end this is what it needed. A Capacitor that I bought on-line for 28$ + tax brand new and exact model as came out of the AC unit. I replaced that myself. It was obviously blown and with a poor little mouse hanging off it that had fried himself. This is the only part that really needed replacement. Dan knew there was a little reset switch on my "I Believe" it was a high pressure freon switch wired into the coils. Dan checked the switches to make sure they were working correctly and after pressing reset the unit worked perfectly. Dan did not even charge me for regular service call, but only for checking the freon, and reconnecting the switches I had disconnected. I will tell you the price in order to drive the point home. I replaced the Capacitor for about 35$ myself. Dan charged me 59$ for his time for the service call. The previous service person charged me 89$ for the service call, was going to charge me 160$ for the capacitor, and worse finding the capacitor did not fix the issue was going to charge me in excess of 600$ for a circuit board that was NEVER faulty. Please note that I found that circuit board on-line for 42$. NEVER hire anyone to do anything until you go to YELP and see if anyone is worth hiring. I learned my lesson. There are criminals out there that will take you for every penny they think they can. And then their are people of quality AND service like Dan of Stafford Home Services that are worth their weight in gold! I am telling you right here and now, call Stafford first before all others. A few years ago we had to have our furnace replaced. We checked with two companies. The first one was very pricey and also pushy about signing up with their servicing program. They had availability to install the furnace the following day. The second company we checked with was Stafford Home Services. The cost for the installation of the exact same model was thousands of dollars less. We did had to wait for a couple of weeks to have it installed, but it was worth it. They even took care of submitting the energy saving program rebate for us. Since then they installed our Ecobee thermostats and do our yearly furnace tune-up. They are super nice, low key, never pushy, and very reasonably priced. read more

Stafford Home Service served us with utmost professionalism, utmost courtesy, and utmost competence. Home theater systems and security systems are almost always highly personalized. To get them tuned up properly and brought up to date requires someone who knows the capabilities of the system, and what updates are available. Stafford was excellent at doing this. For example, I wanted to upgrade my security system to be armed over the Internet. Before I knew it, Jason had it done. What I like about Stafford is that it is not a big box company - a customer feels like they are really taking the time to listen to what they want. I can't recommend them highly enough. After receiving multiple quotes from competitors, I called Stafford's and Kris (the owner) provide me a quote for replacing some old knob and tube wiring in my house. Kris arrived on time for the quote and did a very thorough review of the work I had requested and gave me his honest opinion about what really needed to be completed. The next day he emailed me an itemized quote (none of the other quotes I received were itemized) with a very competitive rate. Once I decided on moving forward with the work, it was very easy to schedule and they were able to complete the work in a reasonable amount of time. Even though I was not present while the work was being completed, the technician walked me through the work he had completed after the fact and identified 4 outlets that already had new wiring and all they had to do was replace the outlet as opposed to a complete rewire. When the bill arrived the changes were annotated clearly and the total cost of the project came in at under the price they originally quoted me. This company is very honest and does exceptional work for a reasonable price. I would highly recommend them to anyone needing electrical work completed. read more

I called Stafford recently when we came home to no heat, and outside temps below zero. They had someone come out within 2 hours, which was extremely impressive since it had been really cold for 2 weeks and they were undoubtedly busy. Jeremy was the tech and Gabriel was his assistant. They were both very courteous and professional. Jeremy quickly diagnosed the problem and seemed to know exactly what he was doing. They cleaned the flame sensor and that took care of the problem. It was a cheap fix and I was definitely satisfied. I also had them look at the gas fireplace, due to the pilot light going out. Jeremy believed that it was possibly due to an obstruction, so they pulled out a ladder and climbed to the top of the chimney. He said that it was frozen solid, so they would have to wait for a few warm days in a row before they could come back and deal with it. They did not charge me for this, which I thought was nice, as it took two guys to handle the ladder, and the windchill was well below zero. So overall I was very impressed and will use them again. read more

They just rewired almost all the outlets and lights in my house, removing all Knob & Tube wiring from my 1918 home. They did an amazing job and Kris was so easy to work with even when I had to change dates for the work. Kris was very clear up front about when they would have to make holes in the walls/ceilings and gave me lots of good advice as to what needed to be done. While the work was done and hopefully will pass inspection, it's not the same level of service they had in the past. I had an electrician come out to assess the work that would need to be done. They stated there would be a $75 service fee that is a part of the quote they gave me. When I got the invoice it was a separate charge, as though it was in addition to what I was quoted. When I called to pay I mentioned this and they said they would take the charge off, due to miscommunication. I paid, hung up, and thought it was done but then a short time later I received another call asking to clarify what was said, and that they are adding the additional $75 charge back in. I have never had a company call me back to say they were adding back in a charge they were removing, all this while I was at work and didn't have time to get into a lengthy conversation about the specifics regarding the miscommunication. This issue, along with wanting 50% charged up front, before any work was done, makes me reconsider ever using Stafford again. Which is a shame because I used Stafford in the past when Paul Stafford owned the company and had nothing but a great experience. read more

We told we would be charged a flat rate of $59.00 for the visit. The electrician came out and pushed a reset button in our bathroom and the outlet worked. I was very disappointed when he said it would be another $70.00 for the "diagnosis", for 5 minutes of work. I contacted the company and questioned the charge and they would not even consider or review my complaint. Definitely not someone to call if you expect to be charged what you are told on phone. I contacted Stafford in early December to arrange an estimate. Peggy was friendly and easy to work with. We scheduled an estimate in the next few days for Kris to come out. I appreciated their willingness to accommodate my schedule. Kris arrived promptly for the appointment and even took care to remove his shoes. His attention to detail was excellent. We went room by room analyzing the needs for each room and inspecting various components of the electrical system. Kris gave excellent options and his opinions on the work. This was, by far, the best experience I had getting an estimate for this project (and in general). Since it was such a large project, I greatly appreciated the time he spent (almost an hour) going through the house and taking notes. He agreed to have the written estimate emailed within 3 days and he did. The estimate was clear, detailed by room, and easy to understand. Kris quickly answered any follow-up questions I had. Peggy quickly followed up to schedule the project once I agreed to move forward. We scheduled 3 days, knowing it might take longer. Chuck and Chris arrived on-time and also treated our house like it was theirs. After a quick walk-though of the house and noting some changes to our original plan they got right to work. I felt comfortable leaving for work with them at the house. At the end of each day, Chuck walked me through what had been completed, any issues, and updated me on timing. On the second day it was determined that an extra day of work was needed. Peggy was once again very friendly and easy to work with and we got on the calendar within the next few days. Each day they arrived on time and quickly got to work. They were always willing to answer my questions and walk me thought any part of the project. It was clear Chuck and Chris were dedicated to high quality work from start to finish. Due to snow, Stafford will be back in the spring to finish the roof cap portion of the new bath fan. The final step was the electrical inspector's visit. The electrical inspector did not have any issues or require any further work. Without a doubt, Stafford was professional, knowledgeable, and easy to work with from start to finish. I have already recommended them to co-workers and friends and will not hesitate to hire them again in the future. read more

Horrible customer service. I contacted them the second week in August to have two ceiling fans installed. We had work done from them before that we were happy with. So after getting 2 other estimates the receptionist ask me to email me the quotes to see what they could do. I emailed them the quotes and didn't hear anything for 1 1/2 weeks. We were out if town so I wasn't too upset and followed up when I got home. When I spoke with the receptionist she said she remembered seeing something but couldn't find it and would contact Chris ( I am assuming he is the installer). He was on vacation so she told me I wouldn't hear anything until the following Monday. I said that's fine but I would like it installed that week then. Monday goes by, Tuesday goes by. I called to follow up on Wednesday and her response was I couldn't find the email and Chris said he didn't receive anything so he said to just let it go. I said so you don't bother to call back and tell me so that I could resend it. She said well I didn't receive anything. I said last week you said you remember seeing something, you have my number & address on file, and you said I would hear from you on Monday. She said well I am busy and I didn't receive the email. I asked her if they could install it this week if I got the info to them now. She said I can't do anything until next week. So I told her I was very disappointed in their customer service and would no longer be using them. If you want great customer service and your job done within a month do not go with these guys. read more

When I walked by my furnace closet I could smell something was off and I noticed my thermostat was calling for the fan to turn on and it wasn't, so I turned off the power to the furnace and called Stafford to make an appointment because they had good reviews. The tech came out the next day, saw the switch was turned off and told my wife that was the problem. He turned it on and for whatever reason the fan turned on. My wife called and told me that was the problem, I explained that I had turned off the power after the strange smell and it was not the original cause of the failure. The tech said "well it's working now" and proceeded to charge me $110 for the "fix." Fast forward two months, the fan stops working again. I call Centerpoint instead. They quickly diagnose a failing capacitor replace it and all is working as it should. I troubleshoot things for a living, I understand that intermittent things can be difficult to diagnose. But it would have been nice if they would have given a little bit more effort to find the real root cause. read more
