The place is huge with plenty of seating, and the place was pretty much packed when we visited, and most of them seemed to be regulars. I really wanted to like this place but it was just average for me. Drinks were pretty good but the food was just okay. Staff were friendly and the service pretty quick, considering how packed they were. Ambience is more of a family restaurant vibe. Overall, there isn't wrong with the place, but just didn't work for me. There was one issue we had was when paying our check though. Since it was near Closing Time, the person who was waiting on switched, which was fine. Stopped in after a dress appointment near by and SO glad we did. We were able to be seated right away and was greeted by the kindest server. Love the feel of a bunch of different rooms really adds an old timey touch. The food was delicious- I did have to send my burger back to cook a little longer as it came rare and I requested medium well. Along the main street in Scotch Plains, the place is very large having two sides, one more of a bar and the other more dining in small rooms. The building is very old with old beams, which are beautiful and low ceilings. But doodle low ceilings it did feel a little more cramped on the dining side . It was a little confusing as they have formal tablecloths on the dining side, making it feel like more fine dining get our playing rock music from the bar. Seems a little like they don't know what they wanna be. The food is average nothing to write home about the drunken chicken Parm entrée had a vodka kind of sauce on it yet did not have much flavor. The chicken was tender, but smothered in it rubbery type of mozzarella did not taste fresh. I was surprised that an entrée does not come with or bread as usually this accompanies an entrée for the price. The chili was delicious layered in flavors and had just a small amount of cheese as not to hide the rich taste. I would've preferred two bowls of that rather than ordering the entrée. My husband got the tacos, which again were nothing to write home about not filled very full and just average. The sangria did not have too much flavor. The staff was very pleasant, I just wish the atmosphere was a little better and the prices were a little lower for what you got. Unfortunately, I didn't care too much for the cocktails. The first cocktail was not the right mixture. Not sure if he tried to play it off that he didn't know it wasn't the right fruit puree but he was nice enough to make me a different drink. New England Clam Chowder - we love New England clam chowder so we had to try. When it came out, I'm not gonna lie, it didn't look very appetizing. I LOVE historic bars, & this place def fits the bill - they've been in operation since 1737!!!!! For that alone, five stars, & I wld not care if the food & drinks were awful, it was dirty, & the staff were rude! Thankfully, none of those things are true. They are upscale, & everything here is extra, & above & beyond (including the prices - they are not cheap). I've been to this location now a few times. The vibes here are always good. They have great outdoor spaces and frequently have live music. The service is also always great. They have private dining rooms, and if you make a reservation with a large enough group, they'll automatically put you in one. Like the other locations, they have a lot of deals and specials (e.g. kids eat free days, tini tuesdays, endless ravioli days). However, you really have to know what to order and what to steer clear of. With a menu as massive as Stage House's, it's no surprise that they are spreading themselves too thin. A good rule of thumb here is to stick to basic pub food like their burgers, sandwiches, and tacos. Their appetizers are also pretty good, so if you come with a group and share things like wings, tacos, spinach and artichoke dip, pretzel, etc you won't be disappointed. I've found most of their pastas (including their raviolis) and some pricier entrees to be pretty disappointing and borderline unappetizing. Their desserts also should be skipped; they are dry and definitely not worth the calories. Overall, Stage House is a true 3 star experience (the Yelp averages don't ever lie). In spite of its flaws, we continue to come back to all 3 locations because they're great places to take our kids, and we're now armed with the facts about what to order and what to avoid. read more

Really neat layout to this place. Especially for warmer weather. There is something for anyone. Large indoor bar, large outdoor bar, bar seating both inside and out separate dining room area if that's the preference and the menu has a very nice variety. Bartenders, servers and host all very nice. It was a pleasure and a relaxing atmosphere. I understand that the "stage" house also has entertainment but I was only there for a weekday lunch. Came in on a Saturday night to see the Suburban Stereo Band and get some dinner, This was our first time seeing this band and they were excellent! Really enjoyed them... They had a great selection of songs. For dinner my hubby had the Cobb Salad and a Burger and Fries and I ordered the Hot Honey Pizza. His salad looked really appetizing and he enjoyed his burger and fries as well. This was my first time ordering a hot honey pizza and it was really good. He tried a slice and liked it as well. Big Mistake. Food was awful. My granddaughters hot dog was a shriveled, burnt, skinny as a pencil,dis grace. Mac and Cheese was tasteless so my other two granddaughters would not eat it. Stagehouse blends the nostalgic build of a pre-civil war transportation hub with the warm feel of a local watering hole. I came for dinner on a Saturday night and was happy to only wait about five minutes for a table for two. It is worth noting that the location is quite large - multiple floors, multiple buildings, and an outdoor section during the summer months. One warning if you get seated on the second floor of the original inn - it's not for the faint of heart. It shakes when anyone moves, and if you're over 6 foot you'll hit your head on the beam when you reach the top of the steps. Definitely a wild ride if you're also a few drinks in! I've had a few things here that are solid, but not worth writing much about (burgers, hot sandwiches). However, the French onion soup is on a different level. Crunchy onion straws on top, gooey cheese baked on a big bowl, and a tasty broth. Really a masterclass in taking a basic soup and punching it up a bit. Get the soup. read more

We had a great dinner here at The Stage House Tavern for Valentine's Day. We had a reservation for 7 and arrived about 6:45. We were seated right away in one of the small rooms which was really quaint. I ordered from the special menu and my date ordered from the regular menu. I had the Brie appetizer, Filet Oscar, and the Crème Brûlée. Everything of mine was soooo good. My date ordered the Tavern burger and usually doesn't have cheese in his burgers but he really enjoyed it. The only complaint I have is that we waited forever for anything from our order to be taken to getting refills on beverages. We were never asked how our meal was and being that my date's fork was taken away with his appetizer he didn't have one to eat his meal. We kind of shared one because our server want around to ask for a replacement. Hence the 4 stars instead of 5. All in all it was a very good meal though. read more

Went to Stage House for fixed price Thanksgiving Dinner. It was very nicely done. The dinner included an appetizer course, dinner course and desert course. The appetizer course included your choice of soup, shrimp cocktail or salads. My Son and I both had a Fall Salad with goat cheese, walnuts, apples and lettuce. It was out of this world. My Son chose Fillet Mignon as his entree; I had a Turkey dinner with the trimmings. For desert, David had cheesecake and I had apple pie ala mode. I have been to one of the other locations, so I mostly knew what to expect. The setup was odd with so many places to sit. There were 3 separate spots to sit outside alone. We sat on the side patio, which was away from most of the other attendees. The service was appreciated, and the food came out in a timely matter. I shared the PEI mussels ($15.95) and house smoked pulled pork sandwich ($16.95). The mussels came with bacon, corn, tomatoes, white wine, and grilled bread. The mussels were extremely large and there were about 17 of them present. They were alright. Due to the mussels being so large, I do not think they obtained all the flavor. The bread was also too hard where the inside was not soft enough to absorb the broth. The pulled pork sandwich consisted of cheddar and coleslaw. It also came with a side of fries that were good. The sandwich was again, decent. The pork could have been more tender and flavorful, and a different roll could have been used as it did not hold up well because of all the filling. Will I go back? The spinach and artichoke dip with homemade nachos was as good as it gets. Dip goals for those who enjoy a creamy dip with crisp nachos. The wings were perfect for our kiddos and they loved it! However, once they got the plain pie, they ended up eating slice after slice! They say if you do the pasta right, you have a winner. The chefs at stage house have mastered the parm crusted chicken that comes with green pasta and this is another master chef creation here! The chicken was perfectly crusted and juicy and the pasta was flavored to go well with chicken! The table for 2 got their food before our table of 3, ours were not complicated dishes. Two bites into my food confirmed the first thoughts - my crab stuffed sole was not fresh (the potatoes and asparagus were fine). Sent it back, (to his credit) manager appeared quickly and wanted to make it right, but my appetite was shot (I would be sick that night, able to hold off not having that happen there). The others enjoyed their food (Meatloaf and pasta dishes). My dish (of course) and desserts (for them) were comped. It was...not a good rest of evening. The amount of food in this package was astounding and everything was delicious! SO MANY CHOICES that came with this package! Pre-ordered with a phone call a week before and they had a very smooth pick up process where cars lined up single file, you proceeded to the door. Give them your name, they processed payment and they loaded your car for you with the items! SUPER EASY directions for heating - all packaged to go right in the oven. I usually go for ethnic or exotic food so a tavern isn't my usual place, but we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. We both went for the specials-- wife had lobster risotto and I had homemade rigatoni with sweet Italian sausage. Both dishes were of the quality usually found at a fancy Italian restaurant, at about 80% of the price. Beet salad was also tasty and the pumkin pie dessert was easily enough to share and melted in your mouth. I can see why the restaurant and parking lot were full at 5:30. I was taken here today for a birthday lunch by 2 friends. It was mediocre at best. Both my friends had ravioli, a house speciality. They barely ate 1/2, not because they were full but because it arrived barely hot and by the time they were less than 1/2 way done it was ice cold. I had fried chicken chicken which was burnt and not breaded or fried. Scraping off the coating and the chicken was overly salty & barely edible. I too left 1/2 and the potatoes were barely warm. Even with kitchen renovations if this is the best they can do with a VERY limited menu, they should not open until the renovations are done. I will not be back, ever as this was just an awful meal. Oh and dye to the renovations they had no dessert at all, seriously??? That was not stated anywhere and made the meal all that more disappointing. A birthday meal without even ice cram?? And yet at the next table the little girl had a dish of ice cream so I'm guessing they brought it with them.
