I had a very pleasant 3 night stay at this establishment. The staff was friendly, and the room was clean, at a very good price.

We had booked a 4 day stay here, however the property appeared unsafe and dirty, so cancelled stay upon arrival.

We had never stayed at a B and B before so the bar has been set going forward. Mary and Kevin are the kindest and their home feels more like you are at a close family members home or a really good friends. Clean and well decorated with some beautiful views as well. Breakfast was amazing and they grow some of the ingredients right there on the property. The only bad thing about going is having to leave. BTW, the front porch with a cup of coffee in one of the rockers is life changing! Check them out.

We were lucky enough to stay for two nights at The DreamGiver's Inn, and I was so regretful for not making the trip a little longer. This place is truly a dream. The drive from Portland wasn't bad at all (under an hour!) and was really quite beautiful as we made our way. While driving the winding roads filled with fall colors, we spotted the Inn, thanks to its charming shade of red. We checked in around 4pm, and Grace was there to greet us and help us to our room. She was an incredibly welcoming host, and made the experience even more special. We stayed in the "Grace" room, and it was absolutely gorgeous and so relaxing. The room had a huge window seat, and the first couple of hours we were there, we sat there watching the rain and relaxing. Grace had all the makings for hot tea downstairs, which was a perfect match for the moment. We had so many plans that we canceled just so we could sit on that damn window seat and enjoy the view! Mornings at The DreamGivers Inn are the stuff dreams are made of. We usually wandered downstairs around 8:30pm to get some coffee and enjoy one of Grace's baked goods... she made the most amazing banana bread, lemon blueberry scones, and the list goes on. It's a perfect time to wake up slowly and soak in the views of rolling hills, vineyards, and trees. She had breakfast out every morning at 9am, and holy cow, was it amazing. We got to enjoy yogurt parfaits (made with the best local ingredients), egg scrambles, vegetables from the garden, and homemade jams. Can you see why we never wanted to leave? While some would shy away from going to Oregon during the rainy season, the weather ended up being a perfect match for the cozy atmosphere this beautiful sanctuary provided. I cannot recommend this spot enough! Thank you for a couple incredibly relaxing and peaceful days.

The rooms are close to 200 a night and all we got was granola, yogurt and fruit? That's usually the starter, with a main item to come. We got one English muffin to split! It's a historic landmark house in a picturesque mid-Willamette Valley location East of Salem and within easy striking distance of the Cascade Mountains as well as many of Oregon's prime winery destinations. It's not even that far to the coast, for that matter, or to marvelous state parks like Silver Falls, one of Oregon's most popular for locals and outside visitors alike. The downtown is quaint, walkable, and classy, with excellent shopping, coffee, and dining out options (esp. the Silver Grille). And of course the owner, Nancy K., is approachable, animated, and articulate, making you feel smarter and more sophisticated simply by being in her presence. The rooms upstairs (there are 3) have distinctive flair and unique features: Sara Jane's room has a wonderful Victorian "fainting couch," which is comfortable enough to fall asleep on (trust me on this). Eleanor's room has an octagonal turret in the tiled bathroom which lets light pour in and reflect off the pale white walls and porcelain surfaces. If you haven't taken an actual reclining bath in a long while, this is your chance. But for all these amenities - and they are indeed impressive - the most remarkable feature of Adams House is the library and LP record collection, which Nancy has meticulously organized in one of the second floor rooms and made available for guest use. I spent several hours perusing the book shelves on my first visit, reading, browsing, and jotting down titles and authors of interest. It was like being in a bookstore. On my second visit, I ventured into the music collection, starting with a beautiful recording from 1955 of Glenn Gould's "Goldberg Variations" by J.S. Bach. Inspired by the experience, I went back to the shelves and located a recording from the 1980s by a Czech pianist of Beethoven's "Diabelli Variations." By the time I was done listening, breakfast was ready. What a nice way to start the morning, don't you think? Visiting Silverton and staying at Adams House is not so much "stepping back" in time as it is "stepping sideways" in time: moving horizontally away from the routines of your regular days and nights and experiencing, however briefly, an alternative universe: one in which music still plays on records, books still are written on paper, and tea is still served on silver in fine china. It's easy to appreciate - and hard to leave behind when you return to the road. I doubt that you will be disappointed by your initial visit. You'll likely return in the future, just to make sure that it wasn't just a dream, after all.

At what cost?"), and I thought a long time about whether to leave this review. I was quite disappointed with the Lodge at Detroit Lake, because the website is so very misleading. I have traveled around the world and have stayed in all kinds of places, including barns, tents, eco-resorts, and many, many historic properties. I am not a particularly picky traveler. I was looking for a quiet and basically comfy place in a rural setting with a small kitchen and no need for camping gear, close to Breitenbush and local hiking spots. What I got was a very run-down and noisy roadside motel under active construction that didn't resemble the website photos at all. Please note most of the photos seem to be pre-fire (the log cabin rooms in the photo are no longer there). Visible daylight and air crept in through holes in the wall; none of the windows were locked until I thought to check them in the middle of the night; and the bed was wretched (again, not picky, but this thing was in a class by itself). The "community setting" that "promotes front porch sitting and evening gatherings around the campfire" was an empty weed-choked slab of asphalt with a port-o-let across the parking lot. None of the food trucks or restaurants seemed open and the traffic and owners' dog were too noisy to open the windows for fresh air. The check-in process was perfunctory and unwelcoming, and worst of all, someone began using an electric saw incessantly (and unapologetically) directly under my window at 7:30 AM. To charge $166/night ($500 in total) for this experience is appalling--even with west coast pricing and recent inflation, this place isn't worth more than $100/night at the absolute outside. They collect payment up front (and will charge your card even if you don't stay), which should have been a clue. I left after one night and used some Hilton points to stay in Salem for the rest of my trip instead. It was such a disappointment, since I had wanted to get *out* of the city and spend my tourist dollars in the fire-affected area. But, I felt uncomfortable and unsafe. I didn't feel good about leaving my belongings or food in the room, so I thought--why should I sleep here again? I will say the Lodge at Detroit Lake seemed clean and didn't smell of fire damage. While the room, furniture, appliances, and linens were extremely worn and old, everything seemed tidy and clean. The fridge and TV worked, and there was plenty of hot water. If all you need is a place to crash briefly while on the road, you could do worse. But do ask to see the room before agreeing to stay, check the windows before going to sleep, and leave early in the morning, before the construction starts.

There were no staff available both times I arrived to pick up my keys, so I appreciated having everything squared away ahead of time. Smith Creek Village is a remote area on the edge of Silver Falls State Park. It is a romantic, densely wooded enclave that is often enshrouded in fog during the fall and winter. I've visited in the spring and summer, but staying during the winter months is my favorite because it feels like you are at the edge of the universe. The solitude and relaxation are appreciated after a stressful week of work. Smith Creek Village has a variety of housing options, so be sure to check out their website to see if they have any accomodations that will suit your needs. I've chosed to stay in their one-room cabins each time I've visited. There is a sink and toilet in the cabin, but showers and dressing rooms are a just a quick walk away in a communal bathhouse. The Big Leaf Coffeehouse was a fantastic lodge style restaurant located near the main parking area where guests pick up their welcome packages, however as of October 2024 it seems to have closed "indefinitely." This has happened a number of times through the years, so I can't imagine it's a permanent closure. It really is a necessary amenity because many of the accomodations don't have kitchens. Silver Falls State Park is a beautiful destination not far from Portland. Be sure to check out Silverton, and some of the other attractions in the area if you are visiting from out of town. There is a lot to see!
